Disney Buys Lucasfilm For $4 Billion! STAR WARS EPISODE VII Scheduled For 2015 Release! Updated As Additional Info Comes In!
Beaks here...
In a move that's sure to spawn a good deal of polite and substantial discourse on these here internets, Disney has announced that it has purchased Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and stock. Kathleen Kennedy will be promoted to President of Lucasfilm, and will report to current Disney chair Alan Horn.
And then there's this: the studio is targeting 2015 for the release of a seventh STAR WARS film.
I can't access the conference call at the moment, but Moises Chiullan has the salient details.
[Moisés/"Monty Cristo" here with UPDATES:
Here are a few VERY interesting bullet points from the call as I've posted on my site...
1) Disney now owns all LucasFilm IP: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts (games), Lucas Books/Animation/Licensing/Marketing/Online, and ILM (the company that once owned Pixar), as well as the trademark for "Droid". Disney will now own all intellectual property rights with some distribution and licensing "entaglements" based on existing deals, much like how Universal still has the Marvel theme park license for a while yet and Sony makes Spider-Man movies.
2) Much was made of Disney's global licensed product and distribution reach making better use of LucasFilm licenses, with all emphasis on the $4.05 billion paid being relative to the value of the Star Wars franchise. For example, this would imply that any Star Wars (and Indiana Jones?) licensed comic books will now go under Marvel once the current Star Wars/Dark Horse contract ends, and video games would go through Disney Interactive.
UPDATE 1:: Bob Iger: "We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console. We'll look opportunistically at console, most likely in licensing rather than publishing, but we think that given the nature of these characters and how well known they are, and the storytelling, that they lend themselves quite nicely, as they've already demonstrated to the other platforms" ...so maybe Star Wars comics are safe at Dark Horse? ...I want to say no way in hell, when you own one of the two megalithic comic publishers...
UPDATE 3:: The Star Wars 1313 game is staying on track, per a LucasArts statement.
3) Disney plans to release a new Star Wars movie every 2-3 years starting in 2015. All of them will be in 3D.
4) Star Wars Episodes 7, 8, and 9 will be a trilogy. The treatment is done, is in "early stage development", and the movies are to be released every other year.
5) ILM will remain a studio-agnostic gun for hire. Disney does not want to change anything about how they operate.
6) Fox retains ownership and distribution of all existing Star Wars movies (until that contract expires... UPDATE 4:: Episode 4 is owned "in perpituity" and all other existing movies are owned through 2020). Disney can use any and all characters from the entire Star Wars canon in all of its new movies. All future films will be distributed by Disney, unlike Paramount retaining partial distribution rights when Marvel was acquired. No mention was made of who now owns the Star Wars Holiday Special.
I'm continuing to update that post and will be tweeting as I go through my recording of the call. Here's The Beard and Kathleen Kennedy talking about the future of Star Wars, a video just released today:
END UPDATE]
These are the only details we have right now. From a purely business perspective, this is a no-brainer for Disney. Lucasfilm belongs at Disney, and there is no reason Lucas should be done making STAR WARS movies. It's just far too lucrative a franchise. Do I want to see more STAR WARS movies? Not really, but they're not making these movies for me. There's a whole new generation of STAR WARS fans, and they worship the prequels like folks my age worshipped the original trilogy.
Now, if they get some of the Pixar brain trust involved in developing the stories for the next trilogy... that could renew my interest. What do you think?
I've re-printed the entire press release below. Key is Lucas's statement that "it's now time for me to pass STAR WARS on to a new generation of filmmakers." Expect new STAR WARS films - shot in 3D - every two to three years from 2015 forward.
According to the conference call, there is an "extensive and detailed treatment" for the next trilogy.
Burbank, CA and San Francisco, CA, October 30, 2012 – Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.
Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.
"Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas," said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. "This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value."
"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and "evergreen" Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.
Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney's global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.
The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that already includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.
Driven by a tremendously talented creative team, Lucasfilm's legendary Star Wars franchise has flourished for more than 35 years, and offers a virtually limitless universe of characters and stories to drive continued feature film releases and franchise growth over the long term. Star Wars resonates with consumers around the world and creates extensive opportunities for Disney to deliver the content across its diverse portfolio of businesses including movies, television, consumer products, games and theme parks. Star Wars feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion in global box to date, and continued global demand has made Star Wars one of the world's top product brands, and Lucasfilm a leading product licensor in the United States in 2011. The franchise provides a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal and is well suited for new business models including digital platforms, putting the acquisition in strong alignment with Disney's strategic priorities for continued long-term growth.
The Lucasfilm acquisition follows Disney's very successful acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, which demonstrated the company's unique ability to fully develop and expand the financial potential of high quality creative content with compelling characters and storytelling through the application of innovative technology and multiplatform distribution on a truly global basis to create maximum value. Adding Lucasfilm to Disney's portfolio of world class brands significantly enhances the company's ability to serve consumers with a broad variety of the world's highest-quality content and to create additional long-term value for our shareholders.
The Boards of Directors of Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, and other customary closing conditions. The agreement has been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.
Note: Additional information and comments from Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company, and Jay Rasulo, senior executive vice president and CFO, The Walt Disney Company, regarding Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, are attached.

ROBERT A. IGER, CHAIRMAN AND CEO, THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY REMARKS FOR ANALYSTS REGARDING DISNEY'S ACQUISITION OF LUCASFILM LTD., AS PREPARED
As we just announced, The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm and its world class portfolio of creative content – including the legendary Star Wars franchise – along with all of its operating businesses, including Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.
George Lucas is a visionary, an innovator and an epic storyteller – and he's built a company at the intersection of entertainment and technology to bring some of the world's most unforgettable characters and stories to screens across the galaxy. He's entertained, inspired, and defined filmmaking for almost four decades and we're incredibly honored that he has entrusted the future of that legacy to Disney.
Disney has had a great relationship with George that goes back a long way – with Star Wars theme attractions in our parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo. This acquisition builds on that foundation and combines two of the strongest family entertainment brands in the world. It makes sense, not just because of our brand compatibility and previous success together, but because Disney respects and understands – better than just about anyone else – the importance of iconic characters and what it takes to protect and leverage them effectively to drive growth and create value.
Lucasfilm fits perfectly with Disney's strategic priorities. It is a sustainable source of branded, high quality creative content with tremendous global appeal that will benefit all of Disney's business units and is incredibly well suited for new business models, including digital platforms. Adding the Lucasfilm IP to our existing Disney, Pixar and Marvel IP clearly enhances our ability to serve consumers, strengthening our competitive position -- and we are confident we can earn a return on invested capital well in excess of our cost of capital.
Star Wars in particular is a strong global brand, and one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with hundreds of millions of fans around the globe. Its universe of more than 17,000 characters inhabiting several thousand planets spanning 20,000 years offers infinite inspiration and opportunities – and we're already moving forward with plans to continue the epic Star Wars saga.
The last Star Wars movie release was 2005's Revenge of the Sith – and we believe there's substantial pent up demand. In 2015, we're planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the "Disney-Lucasfilm" brand. That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years. We're very happy that George Lucas will be creative consultant on our new Star Wars films and that Kathleen Kennedy, the current Co-Chair of Lucasfilm, will executive produce. George handpicked Kathy earlier this year to lead Lucasfilm into the future. She'll join Disney as President of Lucasfilm, reporting into Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn and integrating and building the Star Wars franchise across our company.
Our successful acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel prove Disney's unique ability to grow brands and expand high-quality creative content to its fullest franchise potential and maximum value.
We've leveraged Pixar's terrific characters and stories into franchises across our company – from feature films to consumer products online games, major attractions in our theme parks, and more.
The 2006 Pixar acquisition delivered more than great Pixar content -- it also delivered the means to energize and revitalize the creative engine at Walt Disney Animation – which was crucial to our long term success. Animation is the heart and soul of Disney and our successful creative resurgence will be on full display this weekend when Wreck-It-Ralph opens in theaters across the country.
Our acquisition of Marvel three years later combined Marvel's strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters with Disney's creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and an integrated business structure that maximizes the value of creative content across multiple platforms and territories. Our first two Marvel films – Thor and Captain America grossed a total of more than $800 million at the box office. This year, Marvel's The Avengers grossed more than $1.5 billion to become the world's third highest grossing movie of all time – and an important and lucrative franchise for us.
We're looking forward to a robust slate of new Marvel movies – starting with Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World next year, followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014. And, as we announced previously, Joss Whedon is writing and directing Avengers 2 and developing a Marvel-based series for ABC.
Pixar and Marvel both fit our criteria for strategic acquisitions – they add great IP that benefits multiple Disney businesses for years to come, and continue to create value well in excess of their purchase price. The acquisition of Lucasfilm is in keeping with this proven strategy for success and we expect it to create similar opportunity for Disney to drive long-term value for our shareholders.
We're clearly excited about this move forward. We believe we can do great things with these amazing assets….we have a proven track record of maximizing the value of our strategic acquisitions…. and we're poised to do the same with this one.
JAY RASULO, SENIOR EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND CFO, THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY REMARKS FOR ANALYSTS REGARDING DISNEY'S ACQUISITION OF LUCASFILM LTD., AS PREPARED
Lucasfilm, and more specifically the Star Wars franchise, fits perfectly within the Disney portfolio of intellectual properties and the strategic and financial implications of this acquisition are compelling. Our team has spent a tremendous amount of time evaluating this deal and we have concluded we are uniquely positioned to maximize the value of Lucasfilm's IP in a manner that can generate substantial value for our shareholders above and beyond the purchase price.
In this transaction we will acquire rights to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, a highly talented and expert team, Lucasfilm's best-in-class post production businesses, Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound, and a suite of cutting edge entertainment technologies. Our valuation focused almost entirely on the financial potential of the Star Wars franchise, which we expect to provide us with a stream of storytelling opportunities for years to come delivered via all relevant platforms on a global basis.
There are a number of ways our company will derive value from Lucasfilm's intellectual property—some of which can be realized immediately while others will accrue to us over time. George and his team have built Star Wars into one of the most successful and enduring family entertainment franchises in history, as well as one of the best selling licensed character merchandise brands in the U.S. and around the world. However, we believe there is great opportunity to further expand the consumer products business. Today, Star Wars is heavily skewed toward toys and North America. We see great opportunity domestically to extend the breadth and depth of the Star Wars franchise into other categories. We also plan to leverage Disney's global consumer products organization to grow the Star Wars consumer products business internationally.
Let me note that in 2012 Lucasfilm's consumer products business is expected to generate total licensing revenue that is comparable to the roughly $215 million in consumer products revenue Marvel generated in 2009, the year in which we announced our acquisition. With renewed film releases, and the support we can give the Star Wars property on our Disney-branded TV channels, we expect that business to grow substantially and profitably for many years to come.
We also expect to create significant value in the film business. We plan to release the first new Star Wars film in 2015, and then plan to release one film every two to three years. These films will be released and distributed as part of our target slate of 8-10 live-action films per year, and will augment Disney's already strong creative pipeline for many years to come. Lucasfilm has not released a Star Wars film since Revenge of the Sith in 2005. However, adjusted for inflation, as well as growth in both international box office and 3D, we estimate the three most recent Star Wars films would have averaged about $1.5 billion in global box office in today's dollars. This speaks to the franchise's strength, global appeal and the great opportunity we have in the film business.
We also expect to utilize Star Wars in other businesses including Parks & Resorts, in games and in our television business. These initiatives were also considered in our valuation.
Under the terms of the agreement, Disney will buy Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, consisting of approximately fifty percent cash and fifty percent in Disney stock. Based on Friday's closing price of Disney stock, we expect to issue approximately 40 million Disney shares in this transaction. We continue to believe our shares are attractively priced at current levels and therefore, we currently intend to repurchase all of the shares issued within the next two years-- and that's in addition to what we planned to repurchase in the absence of the transaction.
Our valuation of Lucasfilm is roughly comparable to the value we placed on Marvel when we announced that acquisition in 2009. Our Lucasfilm valuation is almost entirely driven by the Star Wars franchise, so any success from other franchises would provide upside to our base case. I realize it may be a challenge for you to quantify our opportunity given the limited amount of publicly available information. But to give you some perspective on the size of the Lucasfilm business-- in 2005, the year in which the most recent Star Wars film was released, Lucasfilm generated $550 million in operating income. We've taken a conservative approach in our valuation assumptions, including continued erosion of the home entertainment market, and we expect this acquisition to create value for our shareholders.
In terms of the impact on our financials, we expect the acquisition to be dilutive to our EPS by low single digit percentage points in fiscal 2013 and 2014 and become accretive to EPS in 2015.
Our capital allocation philosophy has been consistent since Bob took over as CEO. In addition to returning capital to shareholders, we have invested, both organically and through acquisitions, in high quality, branded content that can be seamlessly leveraged across our businesses. Our acquisition of Lucasfilm is entirely consistent with this strategy, and we're incredibly excited by the prospect of building on Lucasfilm's successful legacy to create significant value for our shareholders.

Let's face it. Prequel haters have wanted Lucas to step back for years and let others take the reigns. Well that's happening now. Lucas will consult but that's it. It will be up to Disney to pick the right people to push Star Wars forward. What I don't like is Star Wars Episode 7...the next film needs to be set thousands of years after the 6 movies or thousands of years before them. Either show the origins of the Sith and their war with the Jedi or go into the far future in the Star Wars universe. Either way, no Skywalkers.

don't forget that Marvel under Disney hired Joss Whedon to do Avengers, a TV guy without a hit under his belt because they knew he was the right one for the job. I'm sure they'll do the same for Star Wars. So excited.

Pixar brain trust-You mean the guys who did John Carter
by Samuel Fulmer
Uh...no.
-
You could've spared us the prequels.
-
Plus any talent you can think of possibly being involved in writing it and directing it. In what way could anyone argue that this is a bad idea. Yippee! (thought I'd quote some of that ingenious Lucas dialogue)
-
While he's still alive? This world just keeps getting weirder...
-
After John Carter no just no
-
just PLEASE keep Lucas out of writing/scripting/everything else this time. My faith in Hollywood is non-existent at this juncture, but keeping him out of the picture as much as possible can ONLY work in a positive direction at this point. It's all uphill now, or fuck it.
-
It's in the press release.. Great news, Star Wars needs Lucas on the creative side, where it doesn't need him is in the script department or behind the camera...
-
So this means total ownership of Star Wars is handed over to Disney, including the original films? If so, there's no excuse for them to not release those on Blu-ray. Granted, they'll probably keep us waiting til 2015 to promote the new movie(and maybe when 4K is more prevalent), but as long as we get them eventually. BTW, does this deal also include merchandising rights? I guess it's worth giving those away for $4 billion.

Are they REALLY worshiping the prequels like WE worshiped the original trilogy??
by DoctorWho?
No way. <p> Sure, they probably like the prequels...but they have a billion other equally cool distractions at their disposal. The original trilogy, especially ep1 blew minds and nothing else even came remotely close. No toy, no band, no tv show... nothing. It was a cultural tectonic shift.

Now, will Lucas use some of the $4B to finance those low-budget independent movies he keeps threatening to?

Please just shut up. Stop talking. I don't even disagree with most of your points but just...fucking...stop. Nothing, literally nothing you have to say about the prequels and Ewoks and Lucas being a hack and sell out has not been said ad infinitium, ad nauseum on this site and every other one on the entire internet. Just let those of us with relatively unmolested childhoods enjoy a day, just one fucking day, the idea of new Star Wars before you come in bitching and moaning about Lucas, Disney, Kathleen Kennedy, Marvel, your dad and whoever else you claim will fuck up any new movies while you proclaim you will never watch any of them. Just shut your fucking pieholes.

...Kevin Smith refreshed his resume at the prospect of making Episode VII.
-
and ruin this thread
-
In 2015, we’re planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the “Disney-Lucasfilm” brand. That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years. STAR WARS is gonna be the new JAMES BOND.. and I love that shit! Let us pray... Episodes 1-3 will be seen as the dark times. The low watermark. Episodes 7-9 will restore the glory! Be positive. The best is yet to come!!!!!
-
I mean. Fuck. Wow. I don't even know what to feel about this. Is it April 1st?
-
Wonder if now that Disney owns Lucasarts, if that means they will bring in their own talent for the next Star Wars, or if it'll be more from the George Lucas book of diminishing returns, served up to us via Rick "No, Jar Jar is a great character, Midichorlians is an awesome idea, and I'm sure that everybody wants to see a whiny bitch Darth Vader backstory" McCallum? Hopefully they bring in someone like Lawrence Kasdan, as well as some a-list fresh talent, and just have Lucas advise and spitball ideas, but don't let him anywhere near writing the script or directing for God's sake. Maybe that way the next film might even have a chance of being good... And right now, somewhere just outside the Hollywood Hills, Mark Hamill gets a boner the size of a Super Star Destroyer ...
-
Sorry, it was sent to me as a news release. I don't have a link...
-
Just read the first one last week. Pretty limited as a complete book, but definitely could be a feature length film.
-
Such a casual posting for such BIG news! Although i doubt Lucas won't be involved in the making of any future SW films. One can only wonder at the talent just ready for the chance to tell great SW stories and we know disney will at least attempt to get that talent on board. This is good news for anyone who hated the prequels. But not for those who view any further SW movies as sacrilege. I'm hopeful!
-
Now Lucas can finally start making the small, independent films he obviously cared so passionately about.
-
Canned I hope. Basically, Disney is paying for the characters, not the people behind Lucasfilm. They know the characters are the only valuable commodity.

after Chapter 7-9. Extended Universe, get awesome directors to do a one-off. I think they need someone consistent for 7-9 and 2015 is to soon. You need a 3 film story arc... a great script for the first one.

...and they worship the prequels like folks my age worshipped the original trilogy.
by TopHat
I'm sorry, that's bullshit. Just because your kids enjoyed the prequels when you forced them to sit down and watch the entire "saga" in hopes of confirming your own love of STAR WARS, isn't the same as some movie called "Star Wars" being released in 1977 that you randomly decided to see just because it looked cool - And it blew you away. I'm sick of these internet geeks who write for websites trying to recapture all of the things they liked when they were kids, especially when they try to use their own children to do so. The prequels do NOT have the same love and devotion of the original. What they have is a cgi cartoon on Cartoon Network that parents plop their kids in front of, then romanticize their every reaction like it was all complete serendipity. Stop trying to validate your lives by forcing mediocre crap like the prequels into history.

I'm more bummed about the liklihood of John Williams not being involved in a new Star Wars
by Samuel Fulmer
Then Lucas. Of course I'm sure Lucas will have some say in it, but man it'll be kind of sad not having John Williams there, even if his love theme in AOTC was basically his theme to Hook.

Now Lucas is still going to be a consultant on all Star Wars stuff.
by Paul
Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future. http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/10/30/the-walt-disney-company-acquires-lucasfilm-star-wars-episode-vii-set-for-2015

This feels like a dream... Star Wars Episode VI???? Not directed by Jar Jar Lucas? My heart that's been 2 sizes too small since 1999, grew 3 sizes today.

I guess Spielberg contributed greatly to the good aspects of Episode III with his consulting and pre-visualization. Not sure how much of Indy IV was Spielberg vs. Lucas, but you KNOW Spielberg + Jonathan Nolan could rock the cock of Episodes 7-9.

I've been a life long Lucasfilm fan. I wanted to work at Industrial Light and Magic since I was about four. I knew names like George Lucas and Phil Tippet before I knew who the president of the United States was. Worked up to Digital Domain. A few weeks ago, Digital Domain declared bankruptcy, and I got laid off, along with 300 others. Now I hear Disney is buying Lucasfilm. I don't know what to say. The entire FACE of the post production world as we know has just changed. What will this mean for me? For all of the fans out there? I just don't know. I wish I knew what to do from here.

Even if it was a love / hate relationship, George Lucas was an independant filmmaker. Even if I hate the prequels and the changes to the original trilogy, I find this news pretty upsetting. Now, I'm convinced we will never get the quality of the OT again. Thanks George Lucas, Gary Kurtz, Irvin Kershner, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Phil Tippett, Dennis Murren, Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan for what you have done. It was a wonderful time going to the movies.

20th century fox fanfare is so much apart of Star Wars, that future movies and video releases will not have this music. Disney needs to buy the rights to the 20th century fox fanfare. (We do not need the 20th century fox logo)

What Kathleen Kennedy needs to do is become like Barbara Brocolli and oversee this franchise with a light touch... not a heavy hand. Learn from Bond and also learn from HARRY POTTER, in terms of hiring the best cast and crew and keeping hold of them. After seeing MI: GHOST PROTOCOL last week i'd hire Disney boy Brad Bird to direct the first one. Ditch all the politics entirely and center around making a great action / adventure fantasy genre flick.

I cannot imagine they are going to get a lot of adventure out of the 70 year old Ford and the 60 year old Hamill now...no offense to either but they've hit the age where your action quotient is a bit limited. And failing that, what could they do? Recast? Absolutely not. Have them as "mentors", who guide new Jedis, etc. into adventure? Not really interested in that either, seems weak and half hearted. If this was to be done RIGHT it really should have been done at least 15 years ago. And I'm not very interested in getting into new characters at this point. That said, I wish them well. This is one franchise that could really benefit from a new vision, and I'll cross my fingers for those who are interested. For myself, it just kind of makes me feel wistful.

So we're getting the Star Wars Christmas/Holiday Special on Blu-Ray for Life Day, right?
by Joe Cranford
On February 8, 2006, Harrison Ford made an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien to promote his film, Firewall. During the interview, Conan O'Brien brought up the special, and began asking various questions regarding it, such as inquiring whether he remembered making it. Ford said nothing, but looked away and shook his head nervously, then saying he had no memory of it whatsoever and it, therefore, "doesn't exist." The audience responded with laughter and applause. O'Brien then asked Ford what he would think if he played a clip of the special on the show, Ford jokingly grabbed him, then said that "[he'd] never seen it, maybe it'll be nice." Humorously acting anxious and distracted, Ford suffered through the clip (which featured a scene showing Ford as Han Solo telling Chewbacca and his wife that they are "like family" to him), and then muttered a gruff, sarcastic "Thank you." On the 2010 television program Times Talk, New York Times columnist David Carr asked Carrie Fisher about the special; she said that she made George Lucas give her a copy of the special in exchange for recording DVD commentary for the Star Wars films. She added that she shows it at parties, "mainly at the end of the night when I want people to leave." [edit]

I've heard rumblings that -Avatar Land- was having a lot of problems getting off the ground. I'm waiting for the quiet news release that the plans have folded. Star Wars Land? It'll be announced by the end of next year. Unlike Marvel, Disney already has all the theme-park/ride rights for Lucasfilm. Walt Disney the man was a brilliant visionary artist and perfectionist, beyond comparison. Disney the company is a ruthless and controlling company. But MAN are they just as brilliant. Pixar. Marvel. Lucasfilm...When their own creativity is in the doldrums, they turn around and purchase properties with endless potential. When they bought Marvel, people scoffed. Avengers alone paid for the investment. Smart, smart, smart. And a little frightening. How long until Disney owns all entertainment?

by Stegman84
Treating Star Wars like the Bond franchise is exactly right and what needs to be done. It won't always work, there will likely be weaker films, but so many truly talented people in Hollywood will be falling over themselves to try and get to play with this cinematic universe that we are practically guaranteed to also get some Star Wars films that we can truly be excited about again. Honestly, even the downsides of this news are tempered by the fact that we are guaranteed to have some Star Wars films to be excited about in the future again. Hopefully Indy too.

Indiana Jones is part of the deal, but sounds like it's still locked into Paramount distribution deal. ILM is also included, AND Lucas' trademark of "Android". Next three SW films to be a trilogy, released every other year. More films to follow "every 2-3 years". All will be shot in 3D.

This is stupendous news! A Starwars movie that Lucas doesn't write or direct!!! Disney have helped make Marvel awesome, the star wars tv show is too expensive, where disney could turn it to profit. Lucas is fed up of being slagged off, cant blame him really, be slagged off or 4 billion? really hard choice! But please disney dont fuck with the clone wars animated series as that rocks, as for new movies they should do the Sith apprentice stories a la the force unleashed or use that as a basis for the tv show, or use it as the base for the tv show! Also surprised no one is worried due to the shit people talk about John Carter, which was awesome so I have faith! Plus I loved the prequals even episode 1 faults and all.

I'd say it'll be one of these three guys: Andrew Stanton Brad Bird Gore Verbinski All three have directed very successful films for Disney in the past, and I suspect they will want to stay in-house with choosing a director for this new trilogy.

-
Ok, first it's better than Lucas doing another Star Wars, or better than him involved in any way. Let's just admit that. I see all these negative reactions, because that's what the internet is like. But seriously guys, the alternative was more Lucas, just... c'mon. Secondly, Joss Whedon is working with Disney. You know, the guy that made Firefly. I mean, if there is ANYONE I'd have picked, in all the world, to head up more Star Wars creatively it's Joss god damned Whedon. And now that's suddenly a possibility, so fuck yes! So stop being your usual, cynical, embittered selves and just start chanting "Joss Whedon + Star Wars" Maybe if we wish really, REALLY hard it will happen!
-
But maybe thats what was needed to get that TV series set between Eps 3 and 4 going. Ill be happy with Cameos in a new trilogy but what will they use? Timothy Zahn's books?

It's great that they're taking this approach. I was always kinda intrigued after finding out that Lucas originally intended it not to be this arc around Vader (nor Luke for that matter), but a kind of almost anthology type series, with different people doing it, well - sounds like that might happen. Everyone just needs to hew close to the tone and approach of the first two movies. Honestly that part even isn't that hard. Not a guarantee of success, but shit, it'll get you in the ballpark.

What I want to know is if Lucas has a stipulation that states Disney MUST adhere to Star Wars continuity the same way he did, which means pretty much EVERYTHING is canon (including the 1977 Holiday Special)!
by R Howell
From comic books to graphic novels, video games to board game, animated fare to the Ewok movies: EVERYTHING that is under the LucasArts/Film Star Wars umbrella belongs in the same universe AND IS CANON! If Disney is smart, they will adhere to this, especially since the SW universe has been expanded forward and beyond the New Hope timeline by thousands of years. Even a sequel movie, should it use an aged Mark Hamil (yes please) and take place 30 years after ROTJ should have the Solo/Skywalker children, the Vong invasion and other such events that have been a part of the ongoing continuation in the novels and comics. There is no reason Disney can't work around or with these events, and to start messing with something just to mess with it never works out well (I'm still waiting to see what Paramount is planning on doing with the original Star Trek universe that SHOULD NOT have been wiped out by the events of the "re-boot" and hopefully is not done from a storytelling perspective).

I worked at a large bookstore for five years, and sold countless Star Wars books and toys to countless young children—and I would talk to them about the Saga. And guess what? Kids LOVE the prequels. I would ask my young customers which Star Wars movie was thier favorite, and seventy-five percent of the time they would say "The Phantom Menace." Star Wars sold half a billion dollars worth of toys last year. It was the best-selling male-oriented toy line in the country. I introduced the saga to my nephews when they were little kids, and in thier eyes I saw the same sparkle that was in my eyes when I was thier age, watching the OT. They simply didn't distinguish between the two trilogies. Obviously the PT didn't have the same impact as the OT; nowadays, kids have a lot more options when it comes to entertainment. But these films will stand the test of time. And by the way–this is terrific news. The Saga will live on.

No trilogies. Just individual movies. The first one should be STAR WARS: Prologue. Ancient Jedi/Sith war that set the stage for the saga. Second one - Star Wars: Bounty Hunter aka the Boba Fett movie! Third One - STAR WARS: Epilogue. Set it a thousand years after Return of the Jedi. No Vader, no Skywalkers.

with the principal filming of the Hobbit I, II and III so he only has postproduction duties. If he approaches Disney to do one of the new Ep. his main competition could be Whedon. not really. Disney has allowed Marvel to do their thing and hire out of the box talent, and there's no reason to think the same won't happen with SW. I'm very excited at the possibilities.
-
Seriously, the prequels proved you can't go home again. They took all the joy away. Now I just see the whole Star Wars thing as a gigantic commercial enterprise with no soul. Won't be fooled again.
-
Hmm... On the whole, I am very, VERY pleased with this news, but I can't help but wonder how the EU will be affected by further films. I know Lucas has said it's all canon and blah blah blah, but there's enough differences between the what was considered 'canon' from the Original Trilogy that was changed for/in the prequels, and, indeed, the Clone Wars (Mandalorians, anyone?) So any hope of a Thrawn Trilogy, or a Truce at Bakura, or whatever else happened after all that (I kinda stopped reading once I realised Han was about 55 but being written like he was still 35) may vanish. Heck, the fact that these stories take place 5 years after Jedi, and we're now 30 years after Jedi kinda puts a whole dampener on that. So I'm intrigued what direction they'd go - pick up the action 30+ years with a New Jedi Order (TM), President Leia and Defense Secretary Solo (or whatever) with a throwaway line about "hey, remember that blue admiral and that crazy Jedi clone that one time"... something that about 3% of the audience will get? Mind you, that's not that much difference in time between the OT and the Prequel Trilogy. And face it - we may want to see Thrawn and Mara Jade on-screen, but do we really want to see Talon Karrde? Do we really want to see the death of Chewie (er, spoiler, I guess)? Actually, I know what I want to see - Liam Neeson reprise Qui-Gon in the style of Taken.

I suspect this deal will have an assload of stipulations set by Lu
by dr_buggerlugs
I doubt Lucas will have sold this off without a fair number of creative stipulations beforehand - no remaking of his 6-film story, adherence to the canon and so on. My guess is that he's been planning on this for a long time and ensuring the handover is done on his terms. At some future point the Star Wars IP would have been up for grabs so what he's done is secure his life's work and ensure its in the hands of an organisation who won't totally fuck it up rather than it getting sold to some anonymous hedge-fund or some dodgy Russian billionaire after he's shuffled off the mortal coil. Regardless, Disney are perhaps the ideal organisation to take Lucasfilm - They actually do give a shit about their IP (remember, its a multimedia behemoth built on a fucking cartoon mouse) and they probably will exploit it in a relatively respectful way. I don't doubt Time Warner, Sony, Comcast, Viacom and especially News Corp are going fucking MENTAL right now but right now the Mouse House is probably the securest home for the Lucasfilm properties. But a new Star Wars? With potentially new creative direction? And a whole new trilogy? This could really be something...
-
I still want to see what Lucas intended with the original outline. Have someone else write and direct, but 7-9 should still be that vision. And count me in as wanting Brad Bird to helm. Keep Whedon and Abrams/Lindelof away for now.

Hopefully whatever they decide with it's far better than the dopier buzzsaw childish looking designs of the starfighters and capital ships in the prequels and the mutation they did to the Tantive IV. I hope Disney doesn't aim Star Wars at too young and audience. Let's keep it PG-13 and in line with The Avengers etc. I cannot wait to see some other directors unleashed on this franchise. I am wondering how much influence "consultant" George Lucas will have on the content of the new films.

This is too surreal. My vote: no more prequels. Start us out on a new adventure into the unknown.
by kevred
The whole Thrawn business had some nice elements, but I remember reading it and feeling completely let down by how un-special it all seemed. I'm fine with connections to the original cast & characters. They could all still pull off the elder mentor roles. And they should - this needs to feel special, not like the cosplay/fan-fiction nightmare that was the prequels. Now they can go back and do what they did with Empire. Get good directors, good storytellers, and fuse that Lucas-envisioned world with some real drama. And as little green screen in live-acting scenes as possible, please. Give me places that felt like *places* - Hoth, Dagobah, the sets the used for the interior of ships, etc. In 2015, my son will be the same age I was when I first saw Star Wars in the theater. Don't mess this up, corporate overlords!

...unless you recast Han, Luke, Leia etc, since it takes place just five years after ROTJ. In order for Star Wars to continue, you either have to let go of all of these characters or recast some pretty iconic parts.
-
Mark Hamill playing the Ben Kenobi style mentor role to two Jedi padawans. One who over the course of the movies turns to the dark side, and obviously faces down the other Jedi in a later film. Luke possibly doing a self sacrifice a'la Ben Kenobi in episode IV, but offering advice in later films as a force ghost. Possibly we could get cameo's from Billy Dee Williams, and Carrie Fisher. I can't see Harrison Ford returning though. Chewbacca, and the droids could obviously be part of the ensemble caste and follow the new generation of heroes, and should follow the trope style characters from the original trilogy, which were based on old pulp novels. A princess, a rogue, a wizard, and a young hero.
-
From what I've read, the new trilogy is based on a treatment by Lucas, so you can forget the Thrawn Trilogy. In any case, Fisher, Ford and Hamill are too old and no they shouldn't be recast.

This is at least twenty years too late, more likely thirty. Everyone wanted to see the three trilogies completed -- until they saw the second trilogy. Now, not so much and it doesn't look like they're even going to bother. Sure if there is great writing and great directing and great characters . . . but that's asking an awful lot of hollywood. If you can get one out of three you are lucky Personally, if I were a Star Wars fanboy, I would manage my expectations. The original vision of a family tragedy has been lost. It was Leigh Brackett's vision, nobody else's. She game it this thing we know as drama, which Lucas hated. There was also something she did called "story" but does anyone recall what it was? Star Wars peaked at The Empire Strikes Back and it has been down hill ever since. I wonder what Hayden Christiansen is doing this days? Cursing himself perhaps for missing out on being a sparkly vampire? Be warned: Pushing Lucas off to the side will not help. The old meddler will still be causing plenty of problems. In essence, it looks like the plan is to turn Star Wars into a Star Trek-type franchise with endless re-dos and re-boots and young actors playing young versions of the characters with cameos by the aging version and maybe lens flares . . . Are you ready for a re-imagined Jar Jar? Cooler and hipper? I thought everyone wanted something new? There is so much original material out there. Until, of course, something original does come along and then everyone hates it and it dies a quick death. These movies are just going to be fanboy films and disney will drive them into the ground. To hell with this.
-
the original kids are too old now... a return of Han, Leia & Luke would be more than awesome....
-
One the initial shock wears off, my next thought is to hope Lucas is ok. This is his baby and whether or not we fans have all agreed about his creative choices, the idea of him giving up control of his baby seems unthinkable. It brings back a lot of memories of when Henson sold off to Disney and then suddenly was gone a year later.

Throw in all the deleted/unused scenes in existence, while you're at it. They'll never ditch Lucas's terrible updated versions, but no one's really asking for that. Just add the original versions back into the revenue stream. Now that the property is with someone with a vested interest in making lots of money from it ASAP, that seems like a no-brainer. Everyone wins. Lucas never compromises his 'vision', Disney makes a ton of money, and everyone gets to pick their favorite versions of the films to watch.
-
Jesus people Who the fuck cares if the parts are recast as long as they cast TALENTED PEOPLE The Zahn trilogy is the best of the diarrhea of stars wars books out there - yes - i realize it doesn't make any sense but it's how i view the stars literature - most of it is wet and disgusting and i'd rather flush it down the toilet. The Zahn trilogy is faithful to the original, grows the characters and introduces new awesomeness to build upon. One thing Disney should SERIOUSLY think about - right away - is a star wars live action series - in the hands of intelligent people (so no orci and kurtzman please) to pair with the shield series. Seriously - if disney's plan is to corner the geek universe - (DC Excluded cause they'll never get it) they're kind of on their way

Is George Lucas sick/dying? The reason I ask is because this is his baby and he's not just giving up Star Wars but the super successful companies he has created. These are things he SWORE would never happen. Secondly...as a lifelong fan..this can be good or really bad news. We all want more movies however I guess I am one of the few or many (who knows) that didn't feel like Lucas destroyed my childhood with Ep 1-3. I enjoyed them, they were filled with flaws though but watched them with an open mind and didn't act like an adult. Disney so far hasn't ruined Marvel or Jim Henson but they also have been pretty shitty when it comes to their own legacy. Look at the Disney Channel for example. Mickey seems to being fazed out of everything. Disney could EASILY cast the High School Muscial cast in Ep 7 REMAKE...Lucas never would've done it but now Disney can and could down the road.

ARE WE GOING TO LET THIS LINE OF PURE BULLSHIT PASS? Really.. Are You Fucking Kidding? To the generation that grew up during the prequels, its Harry Potter.. not Star Wars they revere. The Star Wars Prequels were just another set of franchise films. They're viewed in the same light as we viewed Godfather 3. Kind of ok.. but really.. that was dad's franchise... and really, the original films were far better. Harry Potter to them is what the Original Trilogy was to us. Make no mistake about that.

Notice how the editors from SW are missing from ESB yet a new director and Kasdan and Brackett. Then notice again all of them are gone in ROTJ. Shoved muppets and teddybears in our faces. You wanted to kick out the first ewok from the movie when it first appeared just the same as Jar jar over 20 years later. Then CGI , and total green screen, unrefined digital filming shoved in our faces. Marcia Lucas totally excised from SW history and she was one of those who won the oscar. Not to say there are some pockets of what could have been mainly from some fine actors such as McGregor and McDiarmid who steals ROTS and who made it worth something at least.

New Rule: Star Wars without Lucas is like the Beatles without John, Paul, George and Ringo!
by Bill Maher
With the amount of money Disney paid for Lucasfilm they almost HAVE to churn out one Star Wars or Indiana Jones after another. I'm not terribly interested in seeing Star Wars or Indy movies made by someone other than George Lucas. The writers/directors/producers who sign on will undoubtedly be hacks with little or no creativity.

by tailhook
But thats me. And ffs recasting of all 3 main characters is in order or just gtfo. Fisher, Ford, and Hamill are far too old to make realistic depictions of their characters for any story that would be worth a damn.

What, are they going to sell out and make Star Wars toys? Aim cartoons and movies at kids? Make rides at the Disney parks? Please don't tarnish the unwavering artistic integrity of George Lucas over the last 30 years. If not Spielberg, David Yates knows how to handle a big tentpole that appeals to kids and adults (and a John Williams score).
-
Is there a WE in shock? That just about sums up the afternoon.
-
...and I count myself as one of you - here's a newsflash: nobody cares what we want. Kids are the future, nobody knows this better than Disney. The kids decide what movies to go to, what restaurant to eat in, what cereal is purchased and where to vacation. The new Star Wars films will not be more "sophisticated, darker" or have old fracking actors like Harrison Ford as the star. Kids LOVE the Clone Wars series, and they LOVE the prequels. Sorry, but it is true.

I never understood why they didn't continue the Indy series. I always perceived the character as a James Bond...bigger than one actor. Recast Indy and let's see him back in the late 30s and early 40s...hell, how about an Indy adventure with him as Colonel Jones of the OSS? The potential is endless.
-

As excited as I am by the prospect of new Star Wars films, let's look at the physical condition of the original trilogy's stars. Carrie Fisher is a big fat mess and has had so much plastic surgery that she looks more like Jabba the Hut now. Mark Hamill: He's doing ok....a lot older now but he needs to get his ass back into shape too. Harrison Ford: He's the only one who has stayed in shape and would be ready to go if the films started filming tomorrow. Billy Dee Williams: He's ancient now and looks more like a Sith Lord than a rogue gambler.
-
Everything about this is great news. I can't even begin to think of all the possibilities.
-
It ain't gonna happen. Disney's no.1 priority is to get their 4bn back, so these will be kiddie movies. So you can forget about Nolan, Fincher and Blomkamp (not that they would do it anyway). I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just prepare you for the inevitable letdown.

Oh C'mon, you saw that pun coming. Seriously though, I have heavily mixed emotions. George Lucas based his entire career on being an "independent film maker" who so happened to make studio distributed films. He has changed the way films are made technically, due a massive amount of talent surrounding him. In some way I am sorry to see his spirit of independence turned over to Disney, but I understand the logic and Lucas is if nothing, shrewd in his business choices. That said, I am overwhelmed a feeling of...tentativeness. I think the choice of Kennedy as producer is a fine one and makes sense, given her long ties to Lucas. If someone understands him, its her. So why am I not overbrimming with optimism? First, we're talking Disney here. They can't seem to get out from under this perception that they're a suppressive force when it comes to creativity. It seems to be the mouse's way or the highway. However, that does not mean it's all bad news. New directors can mean new directions for the franchise and it's all but universally agreed that this series needs a new direction. The irony being though, some of its best stories are in print, not the screen. The first story that springs to mind is the Thrawn triology, although now that I think about it, the studio would have to re-cast the three principle roles or alter the story altogether. Still it has potential. You could work from a (very) popular mythos and bring in characters like Mara Jade and Talon Kaard. Regardless, Star Wars needs to move forward and this might be one way to do it.

The only real thing the Original Trilogy needs is all the special effects, creatures etc brought up to scratch (despite what a few hardcore Lucas raped my childhoods think--some of the original effects look dated). But the Prequels have some good special effects but some shit dialogue--and Haydn Christiansen.

Kathleen Kennedy is brilliant, so given that he did it, which is shocking, I couldn't much think of a better producer to give it to. Still, wow, shocking news. He's been talking constantly about retiring and making art-films for years now but everyone stopped taking him seriously as the years passed. I'm in shock. I definitely fall on the positive side though. Yes, there'll be some real smelly trash made, but letting other filmmakers play in this amazing sandbox will also produce some real gems. I'm especially excited to see if some filmmakers choose to play in the OT universe with its 'primitive' technology, and ignore/reject the PT universe altogether. Probably wouldn't get green lit given that the sale of the toys and games is all PT-based, but...
-
And just think -- one or more of us talkbackers will probably direct one of those future films...

Go back several thousand years into the Old Republic days. Introduce a whole bunch of new characters. No more Skywalkers. No more feeling that the galaxy is populated by seven people plus some extras. Star Wars is a great conceptual universe, but it needs to move away from the strictures of the Anakin Skywalker arc. These films are going to be 100% Child-orientated. Forget Thrawn or anything dark. It's going to be light and fluffy, with tween age heros. talent when making movies. Which means... this will be directed by Verbinski or Brad Bird or someone they trust. One interesting aspect is, does Lucas's agreement give him any say over the choice of director? (I seriously doubt it.)
-
Yep, that's true: the last truly great film with which Lucas's name was associated was Raiders of the Lost Ark. Seriously, there is nothing genuinely good after that.
-
Im just hoping that the new trilogy steers clear of politics entirely. We dont need to spend time with the rulers of the galaxy whomever they may be. Take it down a notch... a simple quest type movie with the hero racing to retrieve the maguffin from various alien worlds while a rival Sith baddie stays one step ahead of him. Perhaps have an aged Luke set the quest to the younger generation like King Arthur sending his best knight out to retrieve the Holy Grail. That's all you need - just make a really entertaining adventure flick set within the Star Wars universe. Lose the doom and gloom and bring back the derring do!

Realistic optimist? What's that? It never existed such a thing. You mean a fantasist optimistc and if you prefer that, then by all means, be that way. Just remember that when the next Sw turns into 2015's version of The phamtom Menace. I hope it doesn't turn up that way, but i'm not cashing my chips on such fantastical hopes. As for the directiors you hope Disney will hire, i hope you are right. But Disney is also known for being very pushy and ball breaking with directors. Hope you are right, buit i'm not counting on that. Call me cautious, as i earned that from too many disapointments.

Indy was supposed to be a more gritty version of a James Bond type hero. As Spielberg once said, where Bond was champagne, Bond was cheap wine or beer. Funny thing is, nowdays Bond is as gritty as Indy use to be.

Such age has not prevented many composers to keep working. Jerry Goldsmith was 82 when he died and he was still working, despite his illness. Ennio Morricone last film work was in 2009 whenhe was 80. So, guys, you can have good hopes that Williams will return for more SW music. If he's willing or is interested to work on SW without Lucas is another matter. Me, i suspect some new other fella is going to score the newer SW movies that Disney anounced.
-
Martin Campbell did some kick ass Bond. I don't know if he's done sci-fi/fantasy though. I'd imagine he could make an exciting SW film.

Whoa.

Joss Whedon just made the 2nd-highest-grossing film of all time for Disney. He's a self-professed Star Wars fan, and he brings geek cred to the table. If he wants to make this movie, it's his.

And f*ck a prequel reboot. Get to Hamill, Fisher, and Ford before they die, please. Hell, they could even have Mayhew in the Chewie suit.
by AlienFanatic
-
Hello, shareholders. We at Disney realize the prequel trilogy sucked. At our latest board meeting, we passed a resolution declaring that these movies are not canon. In particular, the character of Jar-Jar Binks never existed. All existing copies of the so-called Prequel Trilogy will be hunted down and destroyed. Star Wars Episodes 1-3, to be written and directed by Joss Whedon and Brad Bird, will be filmed following the completion of Episodes 7-9, and are scheduled for release in 2021, 2023, and 2025. That is all. Thank you.

If Superman bombs critically and commercially there's no way Disney would touch him with a 10-mile pole. If Superman is a success, Warner will want to keep him on for a sequel or maybe Justice League? Either way ... I hope that douche is off the table for SW.

@Mal. What about J.J. Abrams, an avowed Star Wars fan who rebooted another Sci-Fi series (Trek) with great results.

Folks here hate him, but I think he's got the chops to handle Sci-Fi on par with Whedon. I also bet JJ's as big a fan of, or a bigger fan of, Star Wars than Whedon is.

A Star Wars movie without John Williams is a cruel, tasteless, miserable joke. A fucking tragedy.
by Ben_Richards_Bomb_Collar
As my mind ran through all the ways that this is just a big fucking mess, it didn't hit me for a while that these future "Star Wars" movies will go one of three routes: 1.) Get rid of John Williams music all together. 2.) Get someone to ape Williams' music (see classic examples such as "Jurassic Park 3: John Williams Only Had One Theme For These Movies Right?" or "Superman Returns With The Classic Superman March & a Bunch of Other Music That Doesn't Stand With It"). 3.) Just cut and paste music from the old movies. All three options are vomit-inducing shitbags. If by some miracle Johnny boy is still alive and willing to compose for these asshats, it would most likely be the only positive to come from this whole turdpile.

In other movie news, Bryan Singer officially returns to the X-Men franchise to direct Days of Futures past.
by Bricklyne
WAKE UP AICN!!!!! Yes he's signed the dotted line and he'll be directing the younger versions of his most successful comicbook movie characters. With any luck we'll have cameos by the likes of Stewart, McKellan, and possibly even a more expanded sneaky peek by Jackman. And with even more luck, Singer will then direct a proper X-Men 3 after that, and wipe off the taste of that thing we last saw after X-Men 2.

They would need to recast to pickup the OT storyline - and they are just too old (Fisher, Hamill) or disinterested (Ford). I am hopeful though - so many universes to delve into with Star Wars. I hope for a brand new storyline and set of characters. The prequels kind of killed my taste for all things "Skywalker".

They've already forever ruined 2 great movie franchises from the original Star Wars movie era (in the form of the Alien franchise and the Star Trek franchise - not to mention the side-hack job they did to the Spielbergian ET-style of movies with that Super 8 crap), and I'm sure that Abrams is just licking his chops to get his hands on yet another 1980's favorite to PULVERIZE.

Did they make an agreement to keep the Fox logo? An Star Wars movie opening with that flyby shot of the Cinderella Castle would be ... just .... wrong.
-
A trench run into the castle would rule your face.
-
They've ruined enough movie franchises. I can't even watch Alien, or Star Trek or Transformers (the 1980's cartoon) without thinking just how badly these goofballs have raped those franchises.
-
I just didn't think it would happen quite so soon. Now, before all the Lucas bashers get their licks in, this is not necessarily good news. It COULD be incredible - if, as I conjectured before, they get respectable talents like Spielberg, Frank Darabont, Joss Whedon, David Fincher, etc. involved in these new movies. But it could also be very bad news indeed, if they insist on churning out SW movies, ad nauseam, every couple of years with no adequate preparation, and with hacks and/or journeymen, like Ratner, Snyder or Jar Jar Abrams at the helm. Like it or not, Lucas kept the series on an even keel: for better or worse, it was all his undiluted vision, without any fingers in the pie. When studios get involved there's always a plethora of idiots wanting to stick their oars in - not just the creative people but even clueless studio execs - and the Lucas bashers may find, ironically, that these later products are FAR worse than anything Lucas ever cooked up. They may be realizing they never had it so good as when Lucas was in charge, by comparison. Disney will find no shortage of takers for these upcoming Star Wars movies, though: there are MANY people who would love to take a crack at this cinematic universe now that Lucas has cut his shackles to it. In short: keep the auteurs in, and keep the hacks out!!!!

Though they should pay Fox a small sum for the right to use the music that played over the Fox logo ... just for the SW movies.

They would be stupid not to. Trying to put a Justice League $200m+ film with no set up against the 2 all time box office giant franchises.... i can't see it. Either (even more stupid) WB rush their JL film into a 2014 release or they move it back to a later date. WB must be holding their heads in their hands as Disney looks set to destroy the box office. Star Wars, Marvel & Pixar = Dream Team
-
Agents all over Hollywood are speed dialing Disney as we speak. Mark Hamill better be the first one hired along with Anthony Daniels (at least voice work). That is all you really need from 4-6 to continue the story arc otherwise it turns into a Star Wars Reunion. Harrison would just look old and constipated and would anyone really pay to see Carrie Fisher these days? Whoever wins out and is cast in this movie is going to feel like he/she got the Golden Ticket (minus a creepy factory owner).

This story has so many different aspects to it. And every one of those aspects can fuck right off. I caught a bit of Episode 3 on tv the other day, a film that i recalled as being slightly less catastrophically bad than the other prequels. The bit where Vader does his 'Noooo!' nonsense came on, and i switched right off again. Fifteen years ago, today's story would have been thrilling. Now it just makes me want to kill myself. More films? Fuck off.
-
But in my heart, a very different song will be playing: - Kinda sad for George. At least, he could finish his own saga years ago in his terms. - Brad Bird is the king, but I would rather see his own projects. - I am getting the same vibe from the new Watchmen series: nice to take a look, but essentially, fanfics done by well paid talents. - Crossovers with Marvel, Pixar and Disney? More fanfics as well. The charm of the strong characters is their own archs. Again, thanks for all the good times, George, in special, for New Hope. You are the dog's bollocks, mate. Cheers.

by joel007
-
Why would anyone in the right mind give this special effects laden, action packed movie to one of these guys? Neither of them have done anything remotely close in scale to a Star Wars movie. Don't even get me started on that crappy Young Indy work Darabont did. That series was a snore fest. If you want to go that route then give it to Terence Malick or how about Bruce Beresford who directed Driving Miss Daisy... I am not saying Snyder or even JJ but there are other directors who have experience with block buster movies. I would even say Neill Blomkamp who showed he has a talent making integrating CGI with live acting with District 9.
-
was for different directors to do each chapter... Spielberg, Milius etc so this could work out ok. So long as they don't hire people like Stanton, Abrams etc. Get truly imaginative filmmakers in, whether they be young or old.
