^ Reminds me of the camera move along the batsymbol during the 1989 BATMAN titles.. a movie which changed comic book movies for the better!
by Autodidact
I have faith that Snyder will do a damn good job with this movie. I don't really like the WATCHMEN movie but that's because FUCK BEFORE WATCHMEN and all that. He did an admirable job on it.

JLA: The Nail Garth Ennis' Punisher run... if you don't mind extreme violence (both the Marvel Knights and the MAX series from the 2000s) Everything else I think of has some kind of niche appeal or is a bit embarassing... THOR Vikings is a guilty pleasure of mine which I'd recommend if you want to read a really nasty and violent Thor story with cursed zombie vikings with fucking art by Glenn Fabry no less! That's interior art!

I'm sorry, I had to. I will stop posting for a while now.

I immediately thought 1989 Batman as well, Auto. Still, not bad looking. A bit too swirly for my tastes, but whatevs.

You post one JLA story as a must read and its the Nail?!? You knowmyou have no idea, right?
by MariusXe
The Nail?!?!? Please. I won't even name better stories with the JLA, because that is such a stupid choice, you don't even deserve the help, man. Sorry.

I LOVE the Nail. One of my all-time favorite JLA stories. Posting that someone's personal opinion is stupid, though...is pretty stupid

At first I thought your F Before Watchmen posts were annoying, then I thought they were childish, and now I think they're pretty amusing. Once you get past the vitriol for Before Watchmen I've pretty much agreed with most everything else you've stated (For the record I haven't read any of the BW series, cuz I'm a trade-waiter). Having said all that, that was my long-winded build up to asking you a question: What did you not like about Watchmen, the movie? I admit that it had been quite a while since I read the mini-series before I saw the movie, but I found it to be an almost beat-by-beat representation of the books. Of course, without the pirate stuff which would have been nearly impossible to pull off. I would almost still have to say that Watchmen is the best comic book movie of all time. Being a Marvel guy I'd probably have to give that title to The Avengers. But, anyway, I'm just curious. What didn't you like about the Watchmen movie?

The mere fact of its existence. It pisses in my psychic garden. It's not the story, it's the telling. WATCHMEN is a pretty exemplary and groundbreaking comic book storytelling.
by Autodidact
As movie storytelling, it's exceptionally visually faithful especially with the blue dongs and I do love the use of slow motion to really establish a clear visual. But the story doesn't exactly sizzle on the screen the way it does on the page. I don't know anyone who's particularly enthusiastic about the movie. More fundamentally, it infringes upon something which until now had only existed as those 12 comic book issues by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Wonderfully singular and sealed under glass. An obscure role playing game that nobody even knows about doesn't count. Until the movie, if you said "I like WATCHMEN" people either knew exactly what you're talking about, or didn't. Now, soccer moms know what you're talking about. And they know they don't like it. Half-assed comic book enthusiasts who haven't read it have now seen the movie and said "I don't see what's so special about that story". Other comic nerds will say "The original series or the movie? Or BEFORE WATCHMEN?" And finally the pissing in my own psychic garden. WATCHMEN had been one of my happy places. A zen garden of fractalized, symmetrical, shamanistic memes and imagery. Now it's all crowded with marketing and the psychic cruft of a couple million pharmaceutically and programatically neutered marketing victims. That is the tripod of my argument which is succinctly summed up as FUCK BEFORE WATCHMEN.
-
And now that I know that your diatribe against Before Watchmen is based on such a personal, primal reaction to something that, to you, is an integral part of your being, I applaud you for sticking to your convictions and boycotting BW. F away, my friend. (BTW, now you can say that you DO know someone who is particularly enthusiastic about the movie: me!)

I also love the Watchmen movie, I understand it pales in comparison, but dammit, I loves it anyway.

...other people actually CAN add some cool stuff to the original graphic novel and it not become a horrible tragedy as some closed minded individuals would like to make you think.
i always thought some of the coolest scenes in the Watchmen movie was stuff that didn't actually happen in the comic. the alternate universe opening title sequence was very well done in my opinion. as was the hollis mason murder scene. mason seeing the knot-tops as his old enemies was a interesting addition to that sequence imo. that sequence added just a little bit of visual information for the medium of film without detracting from the original comic panels too much imo.
but then again i'm one of those people who can't seem to understand why writing a book where Mr. Hyde rapes the invisible man to death is brilliant but Brian Azzarello writing a book that fills in a little bit of Eddie Blakes backstory is some horrible crime against literature. i just refuse to buy into that double standard bullshit.
-

It's not a double standard. If someone 100 years from now writes a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for the 22nd century which uses Dr Manhattan along with Dorothy from Oz and Smith from the Matrix, and I have a problem with it..
by Autodidact
.. wherein Ronald McDonald decapitates Waldo for copping his motif, then it's a double standard. But in 100 years I'd probably find that to be pretty awesome so STFU.

WATCHMEN movie supplants and displaces readership of WATCHMEN graphic novel. BEFORE WATCHMEN is changing the story of WATCHMEN. LOEG doesn't change the story of Bram Stoker's Dracula or War of the Worlds... it's 100 years later and clearly not canonical.
by Autodidact
Nobody bases their decision on whether or not to read original Jules Verne or HG Welles or Mary Shelley or Bram Stoker on the existence of LOEG comics.

Actually, I run a comic shop, so...people are coming in to read the original Watchmen BECAUSE of both the movie and BW. So pbpbpbpbpththththhh!

......thats the kind of moral high ground Alan Moore has laid claim too. moral high ground that no other comic writer should be affored. because it's not like Alan Moore would write a story using characters like James Bond or Harry Potter for his own ends......
oh wait......
sorry about pointing out that your coffee table has only three legs. but honestly if you REALLY have your panties in a twist over Before Watchmen because scoccer moms are polluting your psychic garden or whatever nonsense your rambling about then you might want to re-evaluate a few things in your life.
rationalize it all you want but you and Alan Moore sould like a broken record repeating over and over again....do as i say, not as i do....do as i say, not as i do ......do as i say, not as i do...
don't get me wrong, good for you and Alan but just know that some of us are bored to tears by your hypocricy.
