Schwarzenegger Is CONAN Once More!!
The Kidd here...
You can forget about Jason Momoa as Conan, because the original is back.
Today Universal Pictures set themselves up for THE LEGEND OF CONAN, which would return Arnold Schwarzenegger to the role he originated back in 1982, with an eye on Summer 2014 to get the film into theatres.
Deadline reports that Chris Morgan, who came up with the story, is set to produce and may wind up penning the script as well, if he can manage to fit it into his schedule, which also includes writing the screenplay for FAST SEVEN (he's written the last four).
As for where it would place in the Conan timeline, Morgan said that, for him, it's as if the Momoa reboot and CONAN THE DESTROYER never happened, preferring to link THE LEGEND OF CONAN to the original CONAN THE BARBARIAN.
So what's the story of THE LEGEND OF CONAN? Producer Fredrik Malmberg explains it quite simply as such: "The original ended with Arnold on the throne as a seasoned warrior, and this is the take of the film we will make. It’s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he’ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle.”
You wanted Arnold back in some of his classic roles? You got it... although there's no telling how this might affect that planned TERMINATOR 5 Schwarzenegger was originally packaged in. After all, Arnold's been busy accumulating projects... but so many movies, so little time. Eventually something's got to give... and go.

I always love a story about rising to greatness once again later in life. So tired of this youth-centric society which seems to think once you have any wrinkles or grey hair you should just roll over and die and can't defend yourself in a battle. Like to see any of you fight Arnie. his forearm is still bigger than your thigh. Anywho....THAT is what I call cool news. Keep more of THAT kind of news coming. Less on reboots. Especially shitty pointless ones. And I really love, for the record, when a movie like this comes along, with the original actor, and just completely ignores that some reboot was even made.

Wow. I never thought in a million years this day would come. Now that it has... I'm wondering has it really? There are some prerequisites that must fall into place for this film to succeed. One, it must be R. A hard R. It must be scored in a way worthy of Poledouris' legacy. Impossible yes - CTB might be the greatest score ever. But might someone be able to land in the ballpark? They must. Thirdly, the story must be epic but not in an overly cgi crap-tastic way most action movies made today are. I want a grit to this movie. I don't want a digitally clean movie. CGI is cool but the way in which it is used will determine a lot about this movie, especially in regards to tone. Fourth, the script must be good. We need someone who knows Conan as I hope the screenwriters do. I don't want a generic and lazy action film. Shoot for the stars! And rewrite, rewrite, and rewrite. Five, bring in Milius and Stone. They must be involved in some way, especially Milius. Six, don't hire a hack director. PLEASE!! PLEASE!! PLEASE!!! Seven, Arnold better bring his A game. His performance in Expendables 2 ain't gonna cut it. Hopefully by the time we go to filming he will have shaken out the rust. So those are my initial 7 thoughts / keys to success for this flick. Let me close by saying this is great news. I had a tough day (RIP Manny Steward by the way). News of a new Conan with Arnold brightened it up considerably. This is great.
-
may I say this fills my heart with delight. please don't fuck it up
-
I loved the idea of an older Indiana Jones too. I also loved the idea of a return to the Alien universe. Arnold's participation means little to how this will ultimately turn out.

by ThulsaBoom
...they need to fulfill the expectations of that final shot in Conan the Barbarian. If there's room for more after that, so be it. But none of this Terminator Salvation-style holding back for sequels that will never exist. Get it done in one.
-
I just hope they realize that the reason the first one was so good is because it took it's time. Balls-to-the-wall is not the only way to create a strong movie. The remake tried showing us Conan was always a badass, even as a child. The original took the time to show us WHY he's a badass. He was a normal kid. But then his village was massacred, he was enslaved, made to do hard labor his whole childhood, thrown into the fighting pits, trained, educated, and so on... Arnie didn't say much, but you really understood Conan by the end of the movie. I hope this new entry doesn't turn into an energy drink induced blood craze.

Hopefully Milius has one more left in him But I would also pull for Cameron Ed Zwick Aronofsky And my dark horse pick would be Mel Gibson. The Arnold Conan movies sucked. Period. Turgid, tame and neutered for maximum box-office appeal. Faux-epic, muscle-bound horseshit, hardly a step up from Italian sword-&-sandal gladiator movies. None of their few-and-far-between "best moments" belonged to Schwarzenegger, and none of them dared tackle Howard's deep cynicism towards the human race. To think that geeks piss themselves at the mere idea that a man with as little integrity -or talent - as Arnold would be making one last flaccid stab at playing a character like Conan, who at least had a kind of brutish, dumb-animal integrity, would be depressing, if I had any expectations for them to begin with.

Was the Conan remake great? No However it was no where near as bad as people made out and Ronan Dex was a good Conan. I'd rather see more of that, going into new area's, new stories. Than another attempt to just cash in on an old franchise with an aging star. What's the bet they don't think they need to worry on making the best film they can because Arnie is the draw as Conan. Not the actual films quality.

I've been dreaming about this film for the vast majority of my life! KING CONAN will crush his enemies.
by Ed Travis
A few thoughts: 1) Harry says that a script by John Milius exists and is amazing. Anyone know anything about that? If it exists, I'd love to see it incorporated here. 2) Arnold can still play King Conan. The script can be written to an older, wiser Barbarian king. His age works in this case. If he did nothing else in this "comeback tour", this would be the movie I want to see. Whereas there is absolutely no reason to ever have Arnold play TERMINATOR ever again because the concept of a Terminator model aging doesn't really make much sense at all. And that franchise doesn't exclusively need him. But this role? This is just fantastic news. 3) Mel Gibson for Director. Milius' script as basis for an updated screenplay. Those are some of my initial thoughts. I'm almost certain the final product won't live up to my almost 30 years of dreaming and anticipation. But a man can dream, can't he? And I'm Out. ...I'm going to guess it's a tiny penis. For example, if you pulled down your pants, I'd burst out with uncontrollable laughter (while failing to hide it with my hands over my mouth), and then I'd say, 'Look! It's just like penis, only smaller!'
-
I have to agree that Momoa's CONAN was a pleasant surprise. All I heard leading up to the Blu-Ray rental was "piece of shit, don't waste your money." We got tits, blood, Conan on the high seas, sorcery, and Ron Perlman. Was it RETURN OF THE KING-quality? No. Was it Conan? Hummmm...I gotta say "YES." People (not necessarily everyone here) say they want a real Conan film; lots of them really just want Arnold with a sword saying "Crom" a lot, which isn't necessarily all you need (see DESTROYER, CONAN THE.)

Not arnold. If you were to link up that director and music composer with Jason Momoa, you'd have a damn near perfect Conan movie. The new one with Arnold will be shit because it doesn't have the great director and legendary music composer that CTB had.

Lets get all the aging actors back in their iconic roles one last time. Seriously, I kinda feel bad for the kids of today. You got nothin' of your own, it's all remakes and retreads of entertainment from several decades ago. The best you can get is seeing a retirement age Van Halen live, hoping for one more Led Zeppelin reunion, a new Alien spin off, Blade Runner sequels and remakes, old muscleheads like Stallone and Arnie putting on girdles to squeeze their grotesque man-boobs into one more by-the-numbers action flick. The arts are nearly dead. Enjoy your Korn 25th Anniversary reunion tour and Justin Bieber Matrix trilogy remakes.

Arnold in a two part Terminator conclusion that "Ray Bradburizes" the series...
by even9
is how i would spend Arnold's retirement! The first of the sequels is in the 'future' when John Conner has united the survivors & established a self contained civilisation with a city against the machines. The machines, all different models - later & ealier including the arnold model, have set up their own city also. The combat has reached a stalemate, and no side can establish the upper hand. The Machine A.I. has had a chance to develop and diversify due to the stalemate, & it is now factionalized between the purely killer A.I. and the more ulitility systems type of A.I. This second kind of A.I. has some developed some kind of parity with the killer A.I. & there is some questioning as to the wisdom of wiping out all the humans & their where to from there? What is the nature of their own civilisation & what is it for after the humans? John Connor is meeting with a delegation of this machine A.I. secretly, in a machine city area with the time machines, when they get raided by a patrol of all different kinds of terminator models, new models and older models, including Arnold. In the meelee that follows, both Connor & Arnold get transported back in time to a Dinosaur age. Connor is wounded, and quickly gets tracked down and beaten by the Arnold terminator, who then is about to kill him. This gets interrupted by a possy of herbivore Dinosaurs..... The Terminator coming face to face with the Dinosaurs, totally messes with it's concept of reality, due to the linearity programming inherent to it's A.I. not being able to assimilate Dinosaurs, due to some cosmic fabric of time construct stuff as relates to man. The Terminator finds it is not able to kill Connor & also that is suddenly has no purpose or is out of place in the construct of reality. Connor and the Terminator become friends, get to grips with this new factor in the equation, & hatch a plan to transport Dinosaurs back into the Machine civilization, destroying their linear existential sense of being & surrendering to the Dinosaur rampaging and destruction of their civilisation voluntarily. Thus John Connor beats the machines.....but wait.... As the remnants of the human earth civilisation start with a new destiny, the war over & the Terminators gone, a new Arnold Terminator turns up........Second sequel: It appears that they are not in the future, but actual in the past. & the use of the time machines, has put them all into a cosmic time loop, repeating itself over and over again, man and machine. The machines have worked this out, & sent back one, after many time loop attempts, to this place in time to meet with John Connor. They have calculated, that the way to fix this, is for John Connor and the Arnold Terminator, to time machine, into the future, to both respectively stop their now future selfs from using the time machines in sending back the initial two from the first Terminator film, as well as destroying the time machines. Connor goes back to battle the resistence & himself to do this ( they think he is a terminator) as does the Arnold Terminator go back to battle the machines to stop their side of the equation. Both eventually do this and perish together ( as friends). The series then ends in a relatively present day setting, with a person who looks like John Connor meeting an friendly A.I. utility, with the look of the Terminator Arnold, in a modern civilisation confidently going about it's future. Also, this way, you could watch the series sequels with only 1 & 3(my favs) or 1 & 2 & 3 & with possibly 4.

some are good actors, some not so good. Are you suggesting THEY LIVE shouldn't have used Rowdy Roddy Piper? Are you suggesting Jesse Ventura shouldn't have been in PREDATOR? Should Macho Man not have been BONESAW in Spider-Man?? Arnold's hardly a great thespian himself. As with his role in the first TERMINATOR, it's all a question of the proper casting. I think (of WWE's current roster) Sheamus, Damien Sandow, and maybe Tyler Reks could all be good, although I'd keep Reks in the background.

I would have preferred a proper-funded reboot over Arnold returning to a series that will cast no doubt that he's past action hero prime. We're getting into Roger Moore's A View to a Kill territory in terms of Arnold's age. Or Shatner and company in Star Trek V and VI. Star Trek VI was a great movie, but my god, the cast regulars were practically moving around with canes and walkers.
-
As for wrestlers, the ones you mentioned Daddy Long Head like Roddy Piper, was good, and a lot of that has to do with his personality. But Jesse Ventura was passable. Luckily he was killed early in Predator, and was a joke in the Running Man. But this new generation of wrestling actors like The Rock or Stone Cold, are just atrocious. There's one in the Expendables too (i think) and he is awful, too. If they need actors with muscles to fight with, go with unknowns whose agents won't fight for them to have dialogue or big scenes, and whose egos won't prevent them from being killed off. As for Arnold, true, he's not the best actor, but he has gravitas. He's larger than life and that has always come through on screen.
-
LOL RIP Mako.

Re: I hope this has a clean, Game of Thrones "realism" to it
by Nautilus_nrm1
That's not bad at all. Maybe a true and proper Conan reboot needs to occur via HBO, Cinemax, or another cable venue. As long as it can be gritty, have a sense of realism, yet hint and the dark subterfuge and magic that Robert E. Howard envisioned. Conan as a television series, especially with time jumps along the way, could be very, very awesome.

nor is he a Viking or a believer in Valhalla. He is (like most of Howard's barbarian warrior characters) CELTIC. Conan is an Irish name. Crom is an Irish god. The Cimmerians were believed in Howard's day, rightly or wrongly, to be cognate with the Welsh Cymru. And Howard explicitly makes Conan's people the ancestors of the Celts, not of the Teutons or the Norse. Conan encounters tribes called Aesir and Vanir, ancestors of the Norse, but he isn't one of them. How can they get something this basic wrong?

after the disappointments of sequels such as T4, Predators and prequel like Prometheus....got to temper any excitement with a lot of caution. Also really not sure how a pretty old Arnie will work, will mean having a younger character (yeah Son of Conan or whatever) which could distract. Also Momoa was not the problem in the Conan remake. It was the shitty shitty so shit script. With a decent script, Momoa would have been fine.

Arnold is down and out. When I saw him in "EXPENDABLES 2" he had one thing in common with Stallone and Van Damme: wrinkly skin. Seems like the typical "I don't have yet realized that I'm old" reaction from an aged movie star. I hope he doesn't die from a heart attack on the set.

What made the original work so well was that Conan rarely spoke. The scenic panoramic environments. A great villain. A great soundtrack. Real action. I do not want an over bloated Hollywood CGI turd fest with one liners. Arnold should not speak much in this and his lines should be memorable and potent. Somehow I think we will get the shit fest that Hollywood is known for. I guess my expectations are low until proven otherwise.

I agree with you, i love stories about grandpas and grandmoms kicking asses. And i think there's a market for that, or else how to explain the sucess of the RED movie? Also, a movie about Conan in his old age as a king facing a final adversary is not only good story, but it's also mythical. We see that stuff in legends of old like in Bewulf and how King Arthur met his end, as old kings having a last moment of glory. I say, bring this on. And if Arnold is now an old man, that's the point! Bring it on!

The very first Conan story that Robert E. Howard created was with Conan already as a King of Aquilonia and in middle age, bored out of his skull and aching for adventure.
by albert comin
All the stories that Howard wrote after Conan's first story, "The Phoenix On The Sword", were in fact prequels.
-
You killed my fadda you killed my mudda you killed my PEOPLE
-
You know, in England, the word 'chopper' is slang for a gentlemen's weapon. And I don't mean the one you use for cutting down trees...
-
The original Conan stories are already heavily inspired by celtic myths (Conan's own name, for example, reflects such influences), as Howard himself was a major geek on such celtic myth subjects, due to the great pride he had on his scotish and irish roots.
-
Conan I figure must be a Thrace a legendary race of barbarians. As for the title Legend of Conan sounds like Mask of Zorro. I knew when they dropped Robert Rodrigez and went from "Mark of Zorro" to "Mask of Zorro" it was a movie franchise than had lost its balls. I hope it's not the same with Conan.
-
Don't think it'll work. Milius' Conan was already removed from Howard's vision, which is why Arnold worked in that vision of the character and the world. We're too cynical these days for an old-school, Milius style Conan film, especially if Milius isn't involved.

Looks more like a sequel then a reboot, if the news are correct. The writer/producer himself says it's a direct sequel to the first movie.
-
-"We're too cynical these days for an old-school, Milius style Conan film, especially if Milius isn't involved."- Speak for yourself, my friend. The Milus movie itself is not some lighthearted, all-family rosy adventure movie, it's gritty, dark, full of violence and a good dose of cynicism as well toward the human condition. What made Conan The Barbarian stand out from the other fantasy stuff of the day was indeed how darker it was compared to the rest. If anything, the 1982's "Conan The Barbarian" works ever better this days, when such darker fantasy shows like Game Of Thrones have proved so popular.

I would give Arnie a shot at an ageing Conan; it is more plausible than watching him resurrect the T-800. We need a more prolific writer who has a deft hand in this kind of genre - and not the writer of the "Fast" movies; you might as well invite Marcus Nispel back while your at it. I mean let's face facts here, the Schwarzenegger Conan is not the Conan from Robert E. Howard's books in the slightest. It is, instead, Milius' own distinct take on Conan, as filtered through his own uniquely twisted vision, and so without him on board to steer this ship, I have no reason to think that this will turn out any different or any better than the watered down, Conan-lite effort that we got with Conan the Destroyer. I love the idea of a King Conan movie with Milius at the helm, but this, I'm nowhere near as sold on. Plus which, Arnold seems so desperate to recapture his filmic relevance that it looks like he'll sign on to make anything that even remotely sounds like an 80's era Arnie movie, good idea or no. I don't exactly trust his judgement right now, nor will I until he proves himself...and we won't know that until these films start coming out. But right now it looks very much like a desperate tilt at recapturing past glories, which frankly has me a little wary. And I say that as someone who is a fan of the guy.

...news of a sixty-five year-old man signing on to play in a barbarian movie gets all of your pants a-tentin'... It's OVER, for God's sake. OVER. He and Stallone are desperately trying to hold onto something that they need to just let go. EXPENDABLES worked because, whether it was intended to be or not, it was a parody of the 80's-era action film (haven't seen the sequel yet so I can't say). So here's what's going to happen: IF the film gets made, the first images will begin to pop up here and you'll all say how horrible lit looks...then the trailer will debut and you'll all bitch and moan about one thing or another and add the word FACT! to the end of your posts...the movie will come out and you'll bitch about how it's going to be (inevitably) PG-13 and you just CAN'T Have a decent action movie if it isn't rated R but you'll all go see it anyway and bitch about how much it sucked until it comes out on DVD and you buy it the day it comes out.

This is an interesting idea though not likely to come to fruition in my opinion. The original is one of Arnold's best movies. It played perfectly to his strengths i.e. limited dialogue, gratuitous display of physique, etc. The pattern thus far is clear: these things are doomed to fail. We've built the originals up so much in our minds that they ultimately prove to disappoint. We'll never be satisfied. Don't bother.

Its a great sword and sorcery yarn but not a great Conan film. The biggest problem w/ the Mamoa version was the horrible script, I liked him in the role. Its too bad they killed a potential franchise w/ such a shitty film. I'd like to see Mamoa give it another shot with a creative team that doesn't suck.

Arnie must use whatever clout he has to bring Milius on board
by CliffG368
Milius has made it clear in the past that he wants to do a proper Conan sequel. This much is made clear in the DVD commentary he did with Arnold, and the fact that he took the time to write his own treatment for a sequel years ago. If Arnold truly wants to make the film the best it could be, then he should DEMAND that Milius be involved somehow. Of course, I would like to see Milius back in the director's chair for this one, but if in the end it is something less involved, then that will have to do. Milius should at the very least be consulted about the overarching arc of the story to be told. And while we are at it, why not throw in at least a cameo by Gerry Lopez as Subotai?
-
Ego over art seems to be Hollywood's attitude with this rehash trend lately. I would love to see some real old hands get a grip on this production. This has the potential to be Arnold's swan song and cap his career off with something awe-inspiring. ... Or the opposite. It's gonna be an exciting build up as production notes begin to trickle down to the public though.
-
He might be able to get away with looking beefy and tough under a Terminator T-shirt, but with Conan, he's got to have his shirt off and physique on display.
-
Seriously, he only died in a scene cut from the movie. Perhaps Conan could seek his help in preparing for the final battle/war. After all, he owes Conan for the return of his "wayward daughter". King Osric, even more old and sotted!

Isn't this like getting a lifevest tossed to you after you've already drowned?
by Darth Macchio
If this was 1998 or something, I'd be flipping out but Arnold is like what...a few years away from 70? There's only one angle to play here and that's the same angle they played with Max Von Sydow in 'Conan the Barbarian'. Arnold is now over 10 years older than Von Sydow was in Conan back in '82 (Sydow was 53 at the time and Arnie is currently 65) The old, warrior king on his throne. Hiring mercenary warriors to fight for him because he recognizes his age has deprived him the necessary strength to carry that steel to any effect any longer. But will we get this? Or some half-assed version of a semi-geriatric Arnold lugging around a sword? *Still* able to kick ass as an old barbarian? Really? as a king too? why? I love the idea of an Unforgiven-esque treatment of the character...altho the true Conan wouldn't likely be that overly reflective over the people and monsters he had killed over the years ("Enough talk!" and all that), many of which were far more vile and evil than anyone William Munny may have killed. While Arnold doesn't remotely resemble the literary Conan in physical form, much less characterization, I'd welcome Arnie back as Conan but they have to realize that cgi-mapping Arnie faces on a younger guy so he can still be a bastard-sword slinging barbarian stretches all credibility to thin to believe. This did this with Christopher Lee in the new star wars trilogy and it looked stupid to me (sorry). now, lee fightinig McKellan as Sarumon and Gandalf was excellent but they're wizards, depending on their guile and intelligence, not sword-fighters depending on their strength and agility. And these ain't handguns folks...Clint may be able to pull a little of that old gunslinger in his elder years and still be believable as William Munny in Unforgiven but a heavy ass bastard sword in the hands of an almost 70 year old "Barbarian"? i don't think so. but then, i would love nothing more than to be completely wrong about this. conan the barbarian is a lifelong favorite of mine (dragged me poor pops to the theater more than once back in the day to see it). but please, please, for the love of Crom himself...find the strength to resist the creatively bankrupt temptation to give Conan a son to continue to franchise (ala Indy, Beverly Hills Cop, Die Hard(?), etc) don't try to be clever and make it a twist by making it a daughter either. better he has no children and, thus, no one to inherent his throne (he didn't inherit his kingdom in the book anyway, he took it for himself, as a true Cimmerian would).

Having read Arnie's recent autobiography, I trust his judgment....
by Turd_Is_Floating_Underneath_The_Gravy
He expressed a lot of regrets about the PG-13 Conan the Destroyer (hell, he seemed to be wary about making any of his action movies anything but 'R'). Now that could all be sales talk, but I think he really knows what the fans want to see and will ensure it'll happen. And to hell with all the bashing fuckers here: Arnie's too old, he's too flabby, he's not Howard's Conan, derp derp derp.... First of all, Arnold is age-appropriate for this role, since it is Conan as an older ruler, so that isn't an issue at all. His tenure as Governor gives him a lot of real-life gravitas that will feed into the part. Secondly, he's not flabby. Anyone who has seen recent stills will know that he's starting to get in great shape and putting on a lot of muscle mass. By the time this rolls into production he will be fit and ready. And thirdly, some of these idiots thought Momoa was more accurate to Howard's Conan, which was complete crap. Conan is not a pretty boy Hawaiian surfer. So their judgment of what constitutes an 'accurate' portrayal of Conan is ignorant. Now, my concerns are not with Arnold, but with the director and the script. Why not use Millius' old script, since it is excellent? There's no need to write a new one. Maybe they can touch up a few things in Millius' draft, but that's all. As for director, if not Millius, they need a director with gravitas, like Ridley Scott or Peter Weir or Zhang Yimou. Not an MTV inspired hack. The new Conan needs to be a combination between LOTR, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones, that kind of tone and seriousness. It needs to be a hard R. It does NOT need to be a flashy piece of shit for teens like the failed reboot, inspired by 300 or Immortals or any of that junk. Crom wills it so!!

Neither Mamoa nor Schwarzenegger "look" like the literary Conan
by Darth Macchio
Sorry but I, like many others, have read the books and Conan was never the muscle bound swordsman portrayed in the movies. Howard (no need to go to Robert Jordan here - Howard invented the character and the world of Hyborea) described Conan, in more than one instance, as being powerful and sleek like a "panther", not massive and 'weight-lifter' like as portrayed in the films. So, think more like a modern runner (more muscular than lithe but not bulky) or track athlete as opposed to a bulky weight lifter. Conan was always more "Bruce Lee" than he was "Hulk Hogan"...at least until Hollywood came along and turned him into a giant muscleman. Don't take my word for it - read Robert Howard's original work for Conan.
-
Those of us who appreciate his portrayal (excluding the admittedly awful film he happened to be in) have read Howard and know that Conan is tall, dark, has a low forehead and a deep "gravelly" voice, is fast and mobile instead of lumbering and musclebound, and a rather agnostic view towards Gods and the afterlife. Anyone claiming Mamoa wasn't a good fit for the role is clearly judging him against the comics or the previous films as opposed to the original literary works. With that said, Arnie is an amazing screen presence and it should be interesting to see him reprise the role (should this film actually ever get made).

Look, Schwarzenegger's Conan came out in 1982 and separated from the strict Howard characterization of Conan back then
by Bobo_Vision
So send your gripes to 1982.

Seriously...I was completely unsold on him in Conan and Game of Thrones...completely unsold. Guy was a fashion model right? I mean holy shit, right? Now he's an actor? Why? Weightlifting? But then I saw that season 2 episode with Mamoa and I completely changed my tune. As Khal Drogo, and after a failed assassination attempt on his wife (the crazy beautiful and superb Emilia Clark as Daenerys Targaryan 'Khalishi'), he goes on this verbal rant, stalking around a fire and slowly building his words for revenge. Words in a completely made up foreign language, mind you. And he's all but roaring at the end at how he will take the throne...I was freaking out...guy was so good and so perfect as Drogo that it gave me chills. He wasn't some fashion model with eyeliner...he was Khal Drogo swearing revenge at those who would kill his wife and turn down his people - it was a perfect scene and a perfect casting. it was a brilliant performance and i was thrilled to be proven so utterly wrong in my initial convictions. Mamoa may not have the proper look for Conan but, to me, he more than has the skill to portray any character remotely like Conan, including Conan himself of course...no question at all on that.

I love the '82 film. Hell I even love "Destroyer". All I'm saying is Mamoa came a lot closer to the characters original literary roots, both physically and characteristically, and that his portrayal is usually given a lot more credit by those of us who have actually read Howard.
-
I like Howard's stories, but have not read many of them. I own a few anthologies but haven't had time to finish them. The original Conan is my favorite movie of all time. If they incorporate more elements from the books, that'd be cool, but really, I hope they make a film that meshes with the world Oliver Stone and John Milius created back in 1982. That would make me really happy.
-
is distinctly unique, and if 2011 Conan was the best they can do with the literary version, than maybe the monosyllabic, viking oaf of the eighties films is the best way to go. 'Got love for that Conan too---and frankly, would never have been introduced to the character without him!

I've only read a couple of the books, a handful of the comics, and seen the three movies. CONAN THE BARBARIAN ('82) was awesome. CONAN THE DESTROYER was terrible. Even when I was a kid, I knew it was terrible. But the recent CONAN was enjoyable. Momoa was great in the role. More what I pictured Conan as looking and acting like. Why all the hate? What was so wrong with it?
-
you are spot on about Momoa in GOT. That scene you mentioned gave me chills...I think I stood up and yelled "FUCK YEAH" (may have had a few drinks). It was then I thought Momoa was a legit actor.
-
I agree with everything you say... Barbarian was a classic, Destroyer was total and utter fucking shit, reboot was pretty good I thought. I can't understand why it was torn apart. The only reason why the reboot bombed was because Schwartzenegger wasn't in it. ... Just because he's in a new sequel doesn't guarantee that it will be good. This could go either way. I think Damon Lindhoff should script it. JOKE!!! How about some new fucking ideas?
-
If done correctly, Conan could be a franchise on the scale of James Bond. There are that many good stories about him, written by Howard and Jordan both. It would be refreshing to see Conan THINK himself out of a jam. Tragically, that won't happen.
-
Howards stories are full of Conan performing extraordinary feats of strength. They would require the man to be of extreme strength and size. I had no problem with Mamoas build as a younger Conan fresh from the hills of Cimmeria. But "Bruce Lee type". Hell no. Howard is pretty clear about Conans freakishly large size even when standing amoung other powerful warriors.
-
The one and only true Conan..... This movie will be a fucking epic masterpiece if done right.....It needs to handle with love and care like the LOR trilogys were. FUCK YEAH!!!! A THOUSAND FUCK YEAH's!!!!!!!

darth machio, it's a battle you won't win, people want the muscle-bound Conan
by chien_sale
It's an image ingrained into people's head. He has to be the badass of badasses, big mother fucker that slice people with an axe. Forget ever having ever mentioned that panther thing and go back to bed.

2011 Conan was unwatchable I turned off the blu ray after 30 minutes
by Autodidact
Hey we got Rose McGowan in our movie lets give her makeup that makes her hard to look at. And tell our lead actor he needs to constantly mean-mug because that's what really tough guys do.

I will say this, it's better him playing Conan again than the Terminator.
by Charlie
All the talk of him still being in another terminator movie... oh god no. At this stage he'd have to be the character it's based on or something. Or a terminator made to look old. Or something else which makes no total fucking sense. What I think kills film franchises is the inability to move on.

i havent read any of the original howard, but i like savage sword and shit
by Stephen
Conan never really got correctly adapted IMO. Schwarzenegger films never got the attitude of the character right. Momoa film was good but too originy and the ending was weak. kurt busiek did good, but that was comics where they can afford to do things like be good. planning on read the howard originals soon. Bought a collection and everything.
