The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day is going to give you a piece of its mind.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
Robert Picardo is the man and he’s probably never been more The Man than in Joe Dante’s The Howling. His Eddie Quist is an all-time great baddie in that film. An argument can be made that his other Dante work is up for consideration to compete with his The Man status (his turn in Innerspace as the mysterious Cowboy comes to mind), but I think I still gotta stick with creepy ol’ Eddie Quist.
Thanks once again to the Practical Effects Group for this nice shot of Picardo getting made up for the flick. Click to enlargen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
There’s something fishy about tomorrow’s pic.

Picardo is the man of a thousand make up jobs. He even played a female character in "Legend", the swamp witch, Meg Nucklebones. Yeah, that's him. It was great that in ST Voyager he was finally able to play a role with his own face free of make up. The episode "Someone To Watch Over Me" (i think that's the title) is a great tour de force acting from him, quite one of the few episode that truly justified the series. And in "The Howling" he really plays a very creepy character. His inicial scenes gave that movie an unconfortable feeling it keeps until the end.
-
... the bullet hole really makes it eery.
-
I loved him in Voyager and his cameo in Star Trek First Contact and not too bad in Stargate. My earliest memory of him would be the johnny 'taxi' cab in Schwarzenegger's total recall. Quaid: How did I get in this taxi? Johnnycab: The door opened. You got in. ah fun times :)

Nice pic - I think he's a terribly wooden actor in general, though...
by irishraidersfan
Yet to see him in anything where I found him convincing.

working in the industry. Movies like, "The Thing" and "The Howling" were platforms to exhibit the utility of his brilliance. His work on the underrated "Legend" was an exceptional piece of work; probably one of the greatest examples of the merging of the practical and the physical in the history of cinema. A truly mesmerising piece of work that still confounds my understanding of the process to this day.

Meg Mucklebones in Legend ... Now thats a performance ... Must have been under half a ton of make-up and latex ...

Great balance of the classic upright "wolfman" with the powerful, feral AWIL "hellhound."

Really nice man, I told him I loved The Howling and he laughed and said that was a blast from the past. Said it was his very first movie. Anyway, very nice man, seemed to genuinely enjoy talking about it.

Nothing even comes close. Best werewolf movie ever as well.

Actually American werewolf's design is the most awesome and sinister. My opinion is superior to yours.

The savage way American werewolf tears you to shreds just rules. And it's the best sounding monster ever done.

I met him at Comic-con awhile back. I didn't even know he was there, he was at a booth with Star Trek actors on the main show floor(I just happened to walk by) I wanted to buy an autographed photo and he was packing up and said they were done for the day - I asked if he was back tomorrow and he said no sorry. He looked at me for a sec and then unpacked his photos and signed an autograph and we talked for a few minutes(I joked I was from Canada and I had trouble with American money since it is all the same colour and he laughed since he was working on Stargate Atlantis at the time and it is filmed in Canada). I realize he made $20 off of me but he seemed very nice and approachable and really didn't have to unpack just for me. Perhaps it was my puppydog eyes...perhaps he needed cabfare... Picardo was just the go to guy for prosthetics in his day - he seems to be everywhere in 80s movies, especially if you needed someone who did heavy makeup. He was the Doug Jones of the 80s. I saw him a few years later hosting a Star Trek Symphony with John De Lancie and Picardo was hilarious.
-
I know him best from Voyager, where he was easily one of the best characters. And without question the greatest Trek Doctor since Bones. I've never not seen Picardo put in great work (great phonetic reading of his little cowboy song from Innerspace by the way). Had no idea he played the swamp-witch in Legend and it IS a great performance under tons of makeup! (and Bottin should have gotten the Oscar for Legend, not just nominated - saw that beautiful movie recently and the effects still hold up even today..Bottin is a genius, nuff said) Opinions are valid of course but evidence is important. How many people saw the Star Wars prequels and thought Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor were terrible "wooden" actors? Perhaps you just haven't seen enough of the guy's work?

Thanks for interjecting your incessant, inane, innocuous, imbecilic, impertinent (a) opinions. Also incorrect! gpuar

Totally great character actor. Pretty sinister when he played the evil version of the Voyager Doc. Definitely my fave actor on the show.

Nice Innerspace references, sirs. For a movie that more scary/funny than AWIL, the opening scenes in the peep show..
by openthepodbaydoorshal
the griminess (it was an actual adult book shop), the grainy authentic looking porn loop, the look of pure fear on Ms Stone's face, the backlit figure, etc. makes it one of more unsettling openings for a horror film. And you gotta love Dick Miller's cameo..."like cock-a-roaches".

I will say one of my favorite scenes in American Werewolf is not the transformation scene (a makeup marvel), but the pursuit in the "tube".
by openthepodbaydoorshal
And its for what you don't see, than what you do see.

AWIL is the better flick I think in the long run...but The Howling's monster is amazing

Will it come out here though? One of my favorites. The sound design is expressive and fantastic too.

ultratron - "Howling werewolves are great but cartoons in comparison."
by openthepodbaydoorshal
That's a Harry sentence if there ever was one.
-
It's all in the execution. Howling transformation was shot in "nighttime" with the soon to be victim there screaming and the music swelling. Landis' version-shooting in full, bright light with no music to try and make the transformation more realistic and painful was neat IN THEORY. But it just made the special effects very hard not to look fake. And with no potential victim in the scene, there was no tension either.
-
I appreciate both designs.

adeceasedfan - sure it's Landis and Dante with some of their best material.
by openthepodbaydoorshal
Arguing over the work of Landis versus Bottin, is like arguing over two favorite flavors of ice cream. It's all good.

...the utterly hostile, almost alien, look of the wolf in AWiL still gives me a slight chill. Granted, it's been far too long since I've seen Howling so perhaps I'm not giving their designs enough credit for fear/creepy factors but the face of the wolf in AWiL was pure evil hostility incarnate...even when the lovely Jenny Augutter is trying to calm 'David' as the wolf in that alley, the wolf has a moment of pause and yet still looks like fury personified (well...werewolfified, if you will) I just love that to no end. Plus, as others have said, it's often what isn't shown as to what is...the 'tube' scene in AWiL is probably my personal favorite 'no reveal' scary scene in any movie ive ever seen. we haven't had a glimpse of the wolf at that point yet and you get the barest shadow as it moves into frame but i find that scene to be a tour-de-force of atmosphere, pacing, suspense, mood....name it. and we never see the wolf clearly at all. brilliant!

Great movie for everything EXCEPT the werewolf. Howling far superior.

IMO the wolf creature in AWIL was bushy, almost fluffy looking, while The Howling beasts were a bit more streamlined and agile.

But again, apples and oranges.

AWESOME FILM. And the bullet in Eddie's forehead looks like Murphy's because it's the same master doing the F/X. WHERE ARE YO ROB BOTTIN!?!??!

Yes, yes it is to most, but to a certain contingent here, it's the old my way or the highway mentality. In the BTSPOTD from 2 days ago, I stated that I love AWIL, but prefer The HOWLING. ultratron:Yout two posts @1:56 & 1:57 are completely without merit.
