Will Frank Grillo Be In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER?!?!
The Kidd here...
Just the title of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER alone is enough to give you a pretty good idea of the story Marvel is looking to tell with the sequel (at least to anyone who is familiar with the Winter Solder's place in Captain America canon). But based on some rumors that have been making the rounds lately, we may now have a solid idea of at least one other Marvel character being introduced into the mix for the Cap's follow-up solo.
Over the weekend, comedy talk radio host Matthew Aaron tweeted the following: "Have it on reliable authority that Frank Grillo is THIS CLOSE to getting the role of Crossbones in the Marvel movies."
That prompted Grillo to respond to the speculation that was building amongst fans with this since deleted tweet: "See Ya LA. It was a a good trip. Marvel was a lot of fun. Be cool if it works out. #CaptainAmerica."
Clearly Marvel wasn't happy about these details being unveiled to the public just yet, but it serves as confirmation that Crossbones will be a part of the Marvel Movie Universe as of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.
Who is Crossbones? Brock Rumlow is a supervillain who was seen as a henchman for Red Skull. He also later carried out the assassination of Captain America, although I don't see that story being told just yet. As for his connection to the Winter Soldier though... that's where things get interesting.
During the "Civil War" arc, Crossbones shot Captain America in the shoulder, only to be pursued by Falcon (Anthony Mackie in the coming film) and the Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier then beat him into unconsciousness before he was turned over to the custody of S.H.I.E.L.D., so could it be possible that Crossbones' involvement as a villain in CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 could be the trigger to turn the Winter Soldier back to the heroic side of the equation? We shall soon find out.
Hopefully, Marvel doesn't hold Grillo's chattiness against him, as we've been seeing him doing some seriously fine work lately, especially since his supporting role in WARRIOR. THE GREY, END OF WATCH... he's a part of ZERO DARK THIRTY coming up later this year and then GANGSTER SQUAD... and he's still involved in Joe Carnahan's DEATH WISH. Grillo's been on the rise for awhile, and Marvel would be wise to reel him in for Crossbones. I'd love to see him play a straight villain at this point, and I think he'd be a worthy addition to the Marvel Movie Universe. THE GREY solidified him as a guy that bears watching, regardless of what he's in.

Seriously, Chris Evans in a blue condom ain't working anymore
-
...leave the full, mexican-wrestler mask alone. It's a cool look in the comics, and will look even better in the movie. A sexy Sin (Red Skull's daughter) would be ok, too, if the right actress was found.

Fuck, at least do the Civil War arc first!

Evans in the Cap movie was great, and even better in Avengers. My only complaint was - while the WWII Cap costume was perfect, the modern Cap costume in Avengers was way off. Wrong color blue, and it looked like a cheap Ruby's costume, with the helmet/cowl think looking especially dorky. Evans IS Cap, just tweak the costume for CA:WS.

I haven't read the comics for either in years, but a quick bit of web research makes me believe both the 'under the red hood' storyline of batman and the 'winter soldier' story for Capt are essentially the same yes?

just crap it out, get one quick last mediocre buck out of it (general audiences have no interest in this, all revenue will come from man-children and hipsters who try to label themselves as nerds), and just bail. Then again, the Resident Evil "series" seems to keep truckin' along, shitting out one mediocre made-for-tv stupid schlockfest after the other, so ol' Cap may be kept on life support for a few years, to continue to milk money from his fragile, frail, broken and abused body, but I doubt it.

So I'm excited about Crossbones being in Cap 2. What I would ask is - how do people feel about these unsuperpowered people like Zola and Crossbones being so darn skilled and clever, when Cap is all suped up? I am disappointed by Hugo Weaving's interview about the Red Skull. I think his performance was pitch perfect and was something I looked forward to seeing in future movies, even as a cameo. This feels like McLean Stevenson from M*A*S*H, where you find a good role, then diss it and move away from it. I can't speak to how Marvel treats its actors, but supposing it's industry-standard, I would hope Weaving appreciates that this may not be Agent Smith, but is an opportunity to majorly shine, perhaps in two or three more appearances. I'm confused by people on this talkback thinking Cap is done. There is so much left to be dealt with. Also, the idea of Cap mourning Bucky 60 years later being gay is a really stupid comment. First off, mourning a loss of a friend (clearly a childhood friend) is a real, legitimate grief situation. Also, for Cap, if you do simple math, Bucky has been dead for maybe six to eight months at most.

Do worry..im betting the main villan in this will be Baron Zemo
by TheAwareness
From latino review:THE MEN – VILLAINS? I’m going to assume that with Anthony Mackey possibly bringing The Falcon to ‘Cap 2,’ Black Widow showing up and Bucky returning as The Winter Soldier that the two “very physical” male parts Marvel is looking to cast are our villains. Then again, if we’re looking at a globe hopping SHIELD adventure, who am I to say that one of these isn’t the new Coulson or whathaveyou? What we do know is there are two male roles up for grabs. One is an American character and the other is a foreign character, both roles – we cannot stress enough – are physical. Looks like Marvel likes the idea of pulling from the Game of Thrones wheelhouse (Alan Talor on ‘Thor 2′) because a name shortlisted for one of these parts is Nikolaj Coster Waldau. Nicolaj is up against his Lost counterpart Josh Holloway. Unless this report screws it for them, expect both to be screen tested. i trust these guys since they hav been "on the level"with the marvel news for the last two years
-
Seriously, that whole arc was the comic book reaction to the Bush years. Cap was "killed" (Displaced in time and space I think the explanation went.) for the sole reason that since Bush had turned America into this place where terrorists were supposedly everywhere trying to destroy us because they "hate our freedoms", people wanted Cap to pick a side. That whole stupid "If you're not with us you're against us argument." Marvel picked the best way out. Take Cap out for a while, let some other guy do his job. Hell I still see those loser Tea Party idiots occasionally, and there's always some moron dressed like Cap. Someone who obviously hasn't read a Cap comic in YEARS.

I give Marvel credit. Even as bad as the first Captain America was, they are STILL diving back in for a second shot. Everytime I hear anything on this movie, i am blown away that it isn't "Marvel Pulls The Plug On Cap Sequel." Face it, Captain America is a second-rate character who, while he has a decent history, has aged horribly, and has not been memorable since Gruenwald 25 years ago. Also, they REALLY need to not touch Civil War. They will just fuck it up. And it isn't like you can just do part of it. You need all the characters, especially Spider-Man. So, unless they can get Sony on board, don't touch anything to do with the Civil War storyline.
-
Brubaker's Captain America run was one of the smartest stories and in-depth character work Marvel has done in years. If the movies can even come close to touching that, they'll be classics. The first Captain America was sincere and fun, and I'm looking forward to more non-Avengers Cap stories.

Joe Johnston shot most of CAP's action incompetently.
by Scott Sullivan
All the awkward speed ramps, and also, all the attention on getting skinny Chris Evans right left the end of the movie with a ton of iffy CG shots. If not for these things, I'd probably agree that CAP was the best of the Marvel solos.
-
Or a guy with a face on his chest might just get the whole audience laughing.
-

agreed, Gruenwald's run is the one they need to take notes from
by deelzbub
Definitive Cap, IMO. Everything Brubaker did had already been done (and with better art involved) on Marc Gruenwald's run. Lots of good old Crossbones appearances in those days. And Crossbones MUST wear his mask, or GTFO. Arnim Zola rules! Gotta have that crazy robot body with the little camera on top. One awesome character design that begs for live action.

The only reason I think Civil War on film is even possible
by Larry Sellers
Given the scope and popularity of that arc, it should have been one of those half-assed Marvel Animated Films by now. The fact that they've held off on that leads me to believe they may at least use a handful of ideas from Civil War in a future film. Well also the ending of the Avengers where people are inexplicably wondering if the team is a menace or not...I mean, seriously? They had just nuked an alien invasion and you're wondering if they're on your side?

Studios/directors don't take well to actors leaking info
by the barking dog
Back in the day, I ran a Tim Burton fansite. I was in contact with an author working on a bio, and also with Glenn Shadix, who had done an interview with me and I'd corresponded with a time or two. I think I'd put the two of them together, too. Anyway, the author let it slip that Glenn was up for a part in Big Fish, which was supposed to be between the two of them. I posted it on my site, and not long after, got an email from Glenn asking that I take it down and that it hurt his chances of being in the film - which, he wasn't in, nor was he in another Tim Burton film before his death. I hate to think I might've been responsible for that.
-
Seriously please don't even attempt to adapt that trainwreck of a mini-series. I freaking loathed the Civil War almost as much as I've hated Avengers vs. X-Men. It's just flat out one of the most stupid ideas they ever came up with. Iron Man honestly just turned straight villain, Spider-Man like a moron reveals his secret identity even in spite of th risk it puts to his loved ones which was beyond irresponsible, and Captain America on the verge of victory goes yeah they're right I quit. God I hated that mini-series.
-
You say it's 60 years later, but to Cap it would only be a month or two. That shit's still gonna be raw for Steve.
-
Am I the only one who thinks this film is being crammed with too many characters? It makes sense for an Avengers film, but for a singular hero film, do we really need Cap, Falcon, Winter Soldier, possibly Crossbones, surely a love interest or two AND a main villian?

Luckily the studio did a better job with the character than the comics did. Civil War, great idea and to some degree some of the best writing marvel was doing, but Joe Q once again shits all over it. Now, Tony has amnesia about that, so he can never feel guilty about it. Utter bullshit.

-
I think just the opposite. I think 'skinny Cap' looks awkward. And the scene with Evans and Atwell in the back of the car was horribly misproportioned. Cap looks like a hobbit. He's way too small, even compared to other 'skinny' scenes. The action scenes in Cap are some of my favs in the Marvel film series. Johnston directed the film with grace and dignity--and a lot of heart and fun thrown in for good measure. If anything, the CG at the beginning is pretty jarring. It's really tough to concentrate on some of the dialogue scenes because my eyes keep telling me how fake it looks. But, all that aside, other than maybe 'Avengers', 'Cap' is my fav Marvel film to date. Absolutely love it.

I just think that tony should have stood with cap, villans dont care about the fucking laws, why should it matter if you wear a mask to take out the bad guys. Politicians have no idea what it means to fight doc ock, thanos, doctor doom or any other assortment and get no fanfare or money for it. and yet they have to submit to the govt knowing who they are and where they live (knowing they cannot protect them 24/7!) the reason you wear a mask is to protect yourself from villans who always tend to hold grudges... Matter of fact let them handle any assortment of super villans who threaten new york LA, the world. you think the military can handle them. The super heroes should take a day off on the worst possible day and let's see what happens. When the superheroes cant protect you any more in the marvel U. you think the govt gonna have your back!? fuck them. Matter of fact i wonder why any of the wor;ds supervillans havent been attacking govt officials wouldnt it make sense to? Create anarchy, chaos...
-
I'm loving the cast lined up, crossbones, winter soldier, Sharon Carter... Nice lineup... But who's the big bad I mean it gotta be the red skull... I mean that's the only way the storyline would work right? Winter Soldier was badass in the Brubaker comics... Hell of a sniper assassin with a robotic arm and kick ass fighting skills.

you have to remember, in Avengers Cap has only been defrosted, what, a couple of weeks? for Cap, his best friend had just been killed, not 60 years ago
-
Bucky was a kid. Cap felt protective both as a mentor and a partner. He failed. The guy in the movie was a fellow soldier. Cap must have lost dozens of those.
-
Grillo could replace Hugh Jackman for Wolverine any day though. A short little crazy guy, Grillo would be perfect for this.
