The first one was pretty well done. It kept true to the toneof the games while adding its own story to it. I am afraid this one is.going to.be just about servicing the 3d

Wow, I didn't even know they were making this.

    by Jonathan

I'm in the minority on this one, but I loved the first Silent Hill. And after watching to the trailer for this, I'm happily surprised to see that it's a sequel and not a remake. They got some of the same characters and they're also carrying over other little details like the "Silent Hill" sign used in the first (for example). (Even though Radha Mitchell isn't in the trailer, I had to look at the wiki. Looks like she's coming back as a supporting cast member.) I might see this in theaters.

    Thought the original was underrated.

    by notcher

I will see this in the theater because for some reason I'm in the mood for 3D.

    Silent Hill 3 on PS3?

    by Incomplete Gamer

Are you giving away the Silent Hill HD Collection? You keep referring to Silent Hill 3 being on the PlayStation 3, as if it is a standalone release. But that was a PS2 game, and was only recently released on PS3 as part of the HD Collection (which is screwed up on the PS3, for what it's worth). And if you are giving away the Silent Hill HD Collection, why no love for Silent Hill 2 (which also comes in the package)? This is the second Silent Hill movie, so wouldn't it make more sense to play the second game?

I never played the games, so I liked the first movie

    by CuervoJones

I love surreal horror, and the female stuff was interesting. I also liked Solomon Kane, so take my money, Michael J. Bassett.

The first 30 mins of The Mothman Prophecies...

    by workshed

...very Silent Hill. Actually, there's a fanedit of the first film knocking about that really tightened up the movie by losing Sean Bean's contribution entirely. Track it down if you can because it's far superior to the theatrical.

The new movie is an adaptation of the 3rd game which is a direct sequel to the first game which was what the first movie loosely adapted. Sounds like they'll be playing the HD Collection version. Makes sense given the PS2 version blown up to that resolution won't look as good, though given how botched the HC Collection is, Konami ought to hang it's head in shame for that embarrassment. I think we'll be pleasantly surprised by this movie. The director is a fan of the games, has actually played them and gets the lore. Of course he has to continue off from whatever Gans set up so he can't be completely faithful to the game obviously. Akira Yamaoka is also providing a few new tracks to the film, so there's that!

Hated the stupid supernatural / witch premise of the first

    by theyreflockingthisway

The movie was my first experience of Silent Hill and I hate it when the mystery always ends up just being the result of some cult's rituals or some troubled cursed child. Every film like this is the same! Regardless I actually played the Wii game (Shattered Memories) after and found a much more interesting and moving psychological story. I know the Wii game is a remake and the film probably follows the original game better but I hear the second game is also psychological and another popular title, so I don't know why they didn't go that route. I mean I do enjoy these films for a while. I'm sat there thinking "wow this is weird, I wonder what's going on" and then I'm saying "oh just witches and cults again."

Meh this movie doesn't look great...

The first one was a big surprise... This one looks like every "Teen in terror" type movie we've seen a hundred times already. Will see.

The Wii game is not a remake. It does recreate the original premise of the first game, but then it veers off in a completely different direction. Assuming you've played it through to the end, it is part of the sleight of hand necessary for the twist. The first film actually does stick closely to the first game's story, which is the set-up. While the second game is the most celebrated, it cannot be done without the set-up that the first game brings, which is the origin story. Gans, who directed the first game, always wanted to do SH2, but he knew it wouldn't work without adapting the first game which is necessary to tell us why the town is the way it is. Of course he didn't know if there'd ever be a chance to make a second movie, so he just combined stuff from all 3 of the first games into one film. For example. Practically all the monsters in the first film are from the second game. In the first game, the main protoganist is a male, Harry, who searches for his adopted daughter who goes missing in the town which is all fucked up because of a cult that was trying to raise a god using the cult leader's daughter as a vessel. While there are references in the games to Silent Hill's past with concern to witches, the first game and the cult didn't have anything to do with witches or witch hunters. That was something Gans made up for the first film. However, going by what the director of the new movie has said, is that the Cult we will encounter in this film is more reminiscent of the cult that was actually portrayed in the game, not exact, but closer to what the games portrayed. I guess we'll find out how that turned out when the film releases. Given that Gans changed stuff, doing a direct sequel to the first film and following the path of the game's sequel SH3 which is a direct sequel to the first game's story makes sense. Bassett is trying to bring the films more in line with the game's mythos and so that will be necessary if we want a faithful adaptation of SH2. Though personally I'd rather see SH4: the Room get an adaptation first!
