‘You All Know What To Do!!’
A Promo For Syfy’s DEFIANCE!!

I am – Hercules!!

Syfy’s post-apocalyptic series “Defiance,” set 35 years in the future, is about a “frontier boomtown” built on the rubble of St. Louis -- which, like the rest of Earth, was invaded by extraterrestrials and devastated by a “universal war.”

The series was created by Michael Taylor (“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Virtuality,” “Caprica,” “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome”), Rockne S. O’Bannon (“Seaquest,” “Farscape,” “V”) and Kevin Murphy (“Desperate Housewives,” “Caprica”).

It stars Mia Kirshner (“24,” “The L Word”), Fionnula Flanagan (“Brotherhood,” “Lost”), Julie Benz (“Angel,” “Dexter”) and Grant Bowler (“Ugly Betty,” “True Blood”).

This new promo says it arrives in April:

    willing to co-sign it

    by tendaiamos

The universal war angle could be interesting, widen the scope of the program into something massive...if the ambition is there of course

A buddy of mine is working on the game associated with this.

    by Ryan Dawson

Apparently they're doing something pretty cool: they're making a massive multiplayer online game that ties into the show, such that events on the show influence the game and apparently even players' moves in the game can sometimes affect the show. Definitely a new idea in the multimedia sphere. I hope that the show and the game are both cool, otherwise both are likely to fail. Could be a fascinating new way to take in a show: when you want to explore the world more, you can literally go do so via gaming!

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 3:32 p.m. CST

Finally. Actual sci fi on SyFy.

Farscape, Star Trek, BSG - we miss you!

So they developed a promo based on Eric the Midget's instructions to Johnny Fratto to whack a guy ?

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 3:58 p.m. CST

Jaime Murray, Julie Benz, and Mia Kirshner are in it? I'm in.

    by Imagikafan

  • I LIKE the promo, I do, but I can't help thinking that this somehow won't work. Either the tie-in game will suck, or the series will, or Syfy--pretty much being itself--will deliberately or otherwise torpedo the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm there with bells on...but I'm not expecting it to survive, or at least not gracefully.

Syfy programs don't often inspire hope, but...

    by El Vader

This looks good - if they can have the scope of writing that Galactica and Farscape had - as well as the budget of the former... this could be both a "hoot" and a "holler".

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 6:23 p.m. CST

I just wish syfy had constantly good stuff and had built up to this

    by rakesh patel

It has a good crew, respect is due to the people they've gotten on board. and it looks like a cross between falling skies and Jericho. Its hugely ambitious, its like a massive leap from what syfy has done before especially with the MMO planned with this. I just think it would have been less of a risk if they had a constant output of quality stuff as opposed to the hit and miss stuff it usually churns out. fingers crossed it works for them, Personally dont envy the risk manager for this project! I'm not a gamer ( not that demographic!), stra w poll, how many of you are?

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 6:35 p.m. CST

    not terra nova

    by rakesh patel

    here's hoping.

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 6:53 p.m. CST

    by funkylovemonkey

I thought Syfy had given up on the whole Science Fiction thing. Looks interesting. I like Michael Taylor although his stuff is sometimes hit or miss for me, but definitely will be worth a look. At least for me it will benefit from the drought of science fiction on television lately.

    by Captain

...oh yippeee. I just so thrilled I could...meh.

  • SGU and Caprica were somewhat simpler in concept and scope, yet still pretty expensive and they didn't last long. Not to mention both were offshoots of already established series. Oh and no BSG: Blood & Chrome because they're going with this instead I'd guess? And finally, a nitpick. Universal war? Like galaxies fighting other galaxies across the universe? Cause that is what universal war would be, war spread throughout the universe, not just the Milky Way Galaxy, which is massive enough for this type of story to be honest. This type of show doesn't seem like it can handle that huge of a scope. Which ties back into my first point. If something set primarily on a single ship like SGU can't make it, this show is either going to have to severely compromise on FX and world building, or it is gonna cost SyFy a shit-ton to keep going. Maybe the MMO tie-in offsets that cost though? That is the only thing I can think of here. Either way, we all know how trigger happy SyFy is when it comes to canceling everything but the non-reality based programming, wrestling, and shitty Z-grade movies from The Asylum. I hope this is good though. I am definitely getting a BSG crossed with Farscape vibe from it. Oh, and is it just me or was there a big burly blue Prometheus Engineer in there?

  • I think at this point, the best thing would be to steal from HBO's playbook and adapt a science fiction novel or series of novels like for instance: Hyperion, Revelation Space, Iain Banks' Culture books, Foundation, Gibson's Sprawl trilogy, or maybe something like The Stainless Steel Rat books. Dune would be cool, but I'd rather see something new that hasn't been put in front of a camera yet to get a chance to shine.

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 9:31 p.m. CST

Song of Ice and Fire is low fantasy.

    by Baked

Which is why it works so well on HBO. People aren't hit in the face with fantasy all day long and the network is far more likely to sign onto the project since it doesn't reek of geek stink or whatever. Not that people are afraid of Science Fiction. I just want to see the next Galactica on HBO instead of Sci-Fi but I don't know if that's going to happen.

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 9:31 p.m. CST

    I'm waiting for SyFy

    by Captain

I'm waiting for SyFy to do a monster of the week movie with a ghost chasing pro-wrestler going after the evil prop collector who steals the scripts of 13 year old comic book fans that do all of SyFy's writing.

  • It will be nice to have some real science fiction back on Syfy-less.

  • Oct. 16, 2012, 12:07 p.m. CST

Was that BSG music in the promo? Or just the same composer?

    Blood and Chrome

    by KryptonsLastSon

What the heck happened to Blood and Chrome anyways? The pilot has been done for ages, but it didn't air did it? Its too bad since they took Stargate Universe off the air there hasn't been any reason to watch SciFi (I refuse to condone the name SyFy) unless you like Mega-whatever versus Giant-something movies.
