Now We Know What To Expect From THOR: THE DARK WORLD!!
The Kidd here...
Marvel Studios is giving us an idea as to what direction the Marvel Movie Universe will take in Phase 2 with THOR 2. An official synopsis has been released for the follow-up, and, just from the sounds of it, the scope is going to be much bigger and this set of films isn't going to be afraid to head into some cosmic territory that Phase One almost seemed to purposely avoid.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel's THOR and MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD arrives in theatres on November 8, 2013 and is currently in production.

...so assuming from that last bit from the synopsis, Thor has a "fake-self-sarcrifice" at the end?
by Chris
-
Its obvious why the Avengers can't help Thor, but how are they going to explain that in IM3 and CA:TWS?
-
So far it seems that this movie is going to be a more epic storyline for Thor. I'm looking forward to this.
-
Anyone from the comics? I´m clueless when it comes down to most Marvel stuff apart from Spidey and the FF.
-
Hey I found this for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malekith_the_Accursed
-
DO IT!
-
Maybe all the films happen simultaneously, and therefore answers that question for themselves?
-
They still need to pull in mainstream audiences. Thor as a character has these fantasy elements so I think the moms and girlfriends will tolerate it. But if they get cosmic with Iron Man or Captain America or even Avengers 2, I think they'll start to lose people. It works in comics because the audience is self-selected to like that stuff. Not so true if you want continued broad box office appeal though.

Weird, I thought the original plan was Thor 2 takes place between Thor and Avengers...
by -Halfscan-
Given there was a bit of unresolved stuff in the first that needed to be cleaned up prior to the events of Avengers
-
Did you see Odin's ravens in Avengers? It can be explained in Thor 2 without making it take place before the Avengers.
-
sounds kinda like it.
-
Dipped in chocolate pussy-juice!
-
My God, we haven't seen something that heroic since...since...the first Thor movie!
-
on ample display
-
Will Thor die? Will Jane die? Will Odin die? Will the Warriors 3 die? Will Asgard be destroyed? I hate this form of garbage marketing.
-
Some other cosmic weapon of mass destruction.

They addressed how Thor got to Earth in Avengers minus rainbow bridge in a real-quick throwaway line that'll be expanded in Thor 2.
by Al
It's a wide shot right after Thor yanks Loki off the SHIELD quinjet and Loki's first line is like "Father must have used a lot of dark magic to get you back here!" so that's a setup for Thor 2 with The Shit Going Down.

Where are the Avengers when Thor is battling this foe? On vacation?

Really? Can't they come up with anything else?

They should have Zeus and Hercules. Why not more Sky Fathers?
by Ryan B
-
Should I assume you're being sarcastic? Or do you really not know that Zeus and Hercules are from Greek mythology, while Thor is Norse?

I can see it now. Some teen idol type playing the alien who wears a horse-head helmet but has to take it off because it gets damaged during the initial getting-to-know-you-fight.

Oh give up the whole "Why won't the Avengers help out?" BS
by Ash Talon
Gotta love the "How will they explain the lack of fellow Avengers helping?" Really? It isn't a problem in comic books. I don't think the vast majority of moviegoers will have a problem with solo movies.
As for heroes saving the world again...uh...have you seen a James Bond film? He's preventing world wars almost every film. And there are 23 Bond films. Again, what about comic stories? The Avengers are saving the world almost every few issues.
Thor will be fighting bad guys that want to cause destruction and/or have world(s) domination. So will every superhero or action film till the dawn of time. As for Thor making a sacrifice, either he or Jane will die, which will lead to Thor 3 taking place in...Hel. Lots of potential there, unless you just like to complain about everything.
-
adding "dark" to the title is good its always good to follow other successes I hear that new robocop batsuit is pretty cool too its kind of like subliminal in that it makes the viewer think of other epic blockbuster successful films. But it's a good creative choice too, I mean when I think of "dark" I definitely think of Batman and Thor. Yeah so what Batman never had a Facebook joke and 7-11s they're BOTH rated PG-13 so you can't tell me "The Dark Knight" is more serious or darker than "Thor" has the potential to be.
-
Ok ... so at the end of the avengers, we get a glimpse of Thanos who has a thing for the Marvel universe's incarnation of death. So how do you get Mistress Death into the picture? Perhaps you start killing off characters? So for phase 2 of the Marvel universe, what if the intent is to end each movie with the main character getting killed off? It would let them give everyone a good death scene. The first one would mess with everyone's expectations, but they could also slowly build up the mass-resurrection story in the post-credit teasers as characters start meeting each other in some not-quite-dead pergatory.
-
Let's release the story synopsis 13 months before the film opens!
-
So there's a massive cosmic force threatening the earth and Shield is like fuck it; we'll let Thor deal with it? Makes perfect sense to me...
-
SHIELD kinda just found out Thor was real, do they have spy satellites in all of the 9 realms already? Iron Man is busy ironing out number 3, Cap is on winter leave, it could all be going on at the same time, so they're all busy. And Odin had to conjure a lot of dark magic to even get Thor to Earth in Avengers, now he has to bring midgardians there and back again? Give the old man a break!
-
Since you put it that way.
-
surprised how many people on a geek website consistently get that wrong!
-
...This one is probably the least of my favs. Don't get me wrong..I'll be looking to see it opening day, and ANY Marvel, SW , Indiana Joes, etc. movie is better than any other crap Hollywood puts out these days. Somethign abou Thor I just can;t get overly excited about like the other characters. I think it has to do with the Thor storyline is the most far-fetched. (Don;t get me wrong, they all are, but this one more than the rest) My girlfriend is more of a "manstrem" fan. She'll go with me to see them, and she likes all the Avengers, Iron Man, movies, etc. She loved Captain America. She's not a big fan of Thor...she actually said it was the only one she thought "sucked". I can see where she's coming from. Again, can't wait to see it, but not as excited as the rest of the characters movies.
-
When, Hollywood, when!?

That's cause I come from a land where science and magic are one and the same. (oh and that's not a direct quote either, so don't go google it)

Don't think Thor's "sacrifice" means it's him that's dying.
by grampageezer
According to Norse mythology, during the climatic end-of-the-world cataclysm known as Ragnarok, Thor is poisoned by the great serpent Jormungandr during their epic battle and both he and the sea-monster die.

Thor was (IMO) better than Captain America and Incredible Hulk.
by hank henshaw
Captain America's 2nd half suffered from being mostly a long montage of action scenes. Felt like they were rushing things to get to Cap frozen. The first half of the movie was pretty good, I must say. Incredible Hulk was forgettable. Didn't buy Ed Norton's Banner. Thor, wasn't perfect. Him going from reckless warrior prince to caring, humble mortal was a little too sudden. One thing Thor got right was having a interesting villain, whereas Red Skull in CA wasn't very interesting at all.
-
I thought it was the most consistent of the standalone films, I was never really bored with it. Iron Man and Incredible Hulk closely behind. Captain America, I loved it for the first half then it just fell flat on its face.
-
Because the movie took its time and the villain was personal. Hell the threat wasn't even to Earth it was for the Frost Giants. That is mainly why people don't like Thor. For me it's the stronger of the Marvel films. CA has a great first half. They failed to make Red Skull menacing at all. He has maybe one really great scene. About this bullshit about "How will they explain the Avengers not coming together?"... Um because they are all still ego-filled super heroes. Why would Tony when facing Mandarin cry for Captain America to help... He wouldn't. Thor is dealing with his world and the destruction of that realm. Avengers clearly showed us SHIELD is controlled by the government to only protect Earth. So him battling in his realm alone explains that. What is Thor going to stop and go "Now how can I get Hawkeye up here?" no he wouldn't. Hulk is a monster. That is all you need for that. Sounds like Captain America is going personal for winter soldier. So again why would Cap call in the Hulk to stop his old friend? He wouldn't he's Captain fucking America. So debate over no one ask this again. I just explained it. They will come together when a super threat(Thanos) arrives.
-
You are spot on about the ego thing. Stark wouldn't need an American hero, since he - in his ego fueled mind - just saved the Earth from an alien invasion. Why would he need to depend on the uncontrollable Hulk, when he can build a suit to do just what he needs. As for the super threat of Thanos? What about the Avengers having to go up against a combined threat of Abomination, Mandarin, Loki and Red Skull? I think we'll be getting a rejigged Infinity War story with the licences that Marvel/Disney have available. If this is the case, maybe Fox will loan out Spider-Man for the story and do Venom properly.
-
it would make sense to cut Portman out as soon as possible, too costly, too busy as a movie commodity, her assistant was hotter and more interesting anyway.
-
Two awesome Thor characters that I thought we'd see in a sequel, but as yet no mention of 'em. I hope this doesn't stumble like Iron Man 2 did. Not that seeing MODOK or Mandarin would have made Iron Man 2 better, but I understood the reluctance to show the really fanstastical and outrageous characters back when IM2 came out. Now though I really want to see more of the big names showing up and appearing in multiple movies. Wonder if they'll get Liam Hemsworth to play Baldur at some point too.
-
look into your hearts. You know it to be true.
-
...it needs to happen. Maybe he is part of Phase 3?
-
Guess you forgot Thor and Hercules are both Marvel characters and both have been/are Avengers. They could easily make the Greek pantheon aliens as well

by J
I would think people would want to know that going in.
-

Why doesn't that press release mention if Kat Dennings is topless?
by J
Knowing that is far more important than any plot details. I mean, there are bad guys, the whole universe is threatened, Thor won't have it easy... we get it. But what about Kat?
-
Marvel's movies may not be as grounded in reality as, say, the Batman films, but they're still not going to put in a horse-faced alien offshoot of Thor, no matter how cool Simonson made him.
-
Ares, Hercules, Zeus. Olympus can be one of the nine realms.
