‘I’ll Hold His Legs!!’
Hercules Loves Tonight’s

HBO says of “You’d Be Surprised”:

After venting with Nucky about his liquor travails, Rothstein sends Gyp an unequivocal message in Tabor Heights. In Washington, Gaston Means (Stephen Root) sees opportunity in a Senate investigation of Harry Daugherty (Christopher McDonald) and the Justice Department. Billie (Meg Chambers Steedle) gets a new co-star to revive her faltering show; Van Alden (Michael Shannon) and Sigrid (Christiane Seidel) receive an unexpected visitor; Gillian (Gretchen Mol) worries about keeping her business afloat in Jimmy’s absence; Margaret has awkward moments at the hospital and, later, at Madam Jeunet’s (Anna Katarina). Written by Diane Frolov & Andrew Schneider; directed by Tim Van Patten.

More in the text invisible.

* Once again, HBO does not keep us waiting for the pay-cable nudity!

* We get a swell Arnold Rothstein scene this week.

* Madam Jeunet has not been glimpsed since season one, but a character we’ve not seen since season two resurfaces as well.

* James Cromwell joins the cast this week as U.S. treasury secretary Andrew William Mellon.

* If you guessed Billie’s new co-star is Lucy Danzinger, you’ll have guessed wrong.

* No Harrow again this week, though there’s plenty of Gillian.

* Something quite startling occurs.

* It’s an usually bad week for Margaret.

* “Untie me!!”

9 p.m. Sunday.  HBO.

  • previous seasons all had a lot of slow, plodding episodes bookended by a few fantastic ones...could not watch Seasons 1 & 2 every week as it was best served watching it in groups only complaint is too little Chalky, Richard Harrow, Rothstein

    Needs more Phantom

    by mypalfish

Harrow is probably better in smaller doses, but his scenes with Angela in Season 2 and Nucky a few weeks ago are among the series' best. Just show him working on that sad scrapbook for a few seconds.

DVR Walking Dead. Unless you really love Progressive Insurance commercials, in which case you should DVR Boardwalk Empire.

Forget all the gangster tension and violence, i want to see Margaret Schroeder inform the public on women's health issues! Thats the real action of the show

On a side note, an interesting DTV release

    by Clarence_Boddickers_Optometrist

Called "Perfect Lust" was released last week. Stars C. Thomas Howell as a drifter/grifter involved with a mob boss's (Wilford Brimley) daughter-I forget the actress's name but she played Kimmy Gibler on Full House years ago. She's unrecognizable now. Mix in an amibitious young rival crime boss ruthlessly portrayed by Jake Busey and Lou Diamond Phillips as a detective on the trail and a far more compelling story than anticipated manifests itself over an admittedly short 88 minute run time. Directed by some guy calling himself "Khaotic", Google says he's some Filipino dude who started out as "key grip" on Kids Incorporated in the early 90's. Anywhoo, worth a rental...

God damn my PVR cut off after Billie took the stage

    by ndally

Fucking HBO Canada. You know the actor that plays Gyp is getting major pussy after tonight. Talk about a sausage! what's he feeding that thing? That thing was bigger than Steve Busecmi

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 4:04 a.m. CST

Nothing happened after Billie took stage, relax.

    by Dancingforever

Wow what an episode. There were a lot of big moments. It's interesting that Rothstein's people informed back to Nucky on the progress of the hit. Does that mean AR has someone inside the camp? It’s interesting that AR appears to now be doing business with him. The Chalky scene was brilliant as to be expected. The moment where Margaret took control of the class was outstanding. A lot of people don't get this story line, but if you do it's been amazing so far and that was really the big moment. Her conversation with Nucky and the "practical questions" line was super. Margret is an essential character to this show and a joy to watch each week. The less of the Phantom we have, the more build up there will be. I would imagine when they finally need to get rid of Gyp once and for all, The Phantom will get the call to make it happen.

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 4:38 a.m. CST

    And on rewatch...

    by Dancingforever

I see it's Benny who was the assassin, which would explain AR knowing the fatality total.

  • when the tommygun guys come for albert finney in the bedroom. Nice taxi driver nod to. Another superb episode overall. I really want Margaret to bitchslap that nun. But that might just be my pro-Kelly MacDonald/Anti-Nuns bias coming out.

It is really amazing this season...

by Phimseto jarringly out of place all of Margaret's scenes feel. Also, be sure to see "Seven Pychopaths" for what can only be described as an off-kilter "Boardwalk Empire" tribute.

  • Who cares what time the prenatal care classes start? Too much of the show is too good for bickering between Margaret and the nun to take away valuable time from the worthwhile storylines.

    Planned Parenthood: The TV Show

    by David Duchovny

This is what happens when you let women into the writer's room. Stop tamponing up my gangster show for chrissakes.

  • Thus allowing Margret to say "vagina" to her hearts content. Seriously though I'll say this in defense of Margret: She's not Lucy. Damn that woman was annoying. Also has every episode this season so far featured someone fruitlessly begging for their life? (Roland's partner, Tabor Heights sheriff, Nucky's (conveniently not Eddie) driver, delivery boy.) Maybe not in episode two I'd have to watch it again.

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 11:51 a.m. CST

This show is so good because

    by I am_NOTREAL

It authentically presents the outwardly composed, conservative, formal 1920's and then all of the seething impulses contained (sometimes barely) within. Crazy shit is lurking everywhere, boobs and blood in abundance (and sometimes a dick, too).

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 1:12 p.m. CST

This episode really took it to another level. Best one yet.

The payoff for Margarets stroy line

    by Dancingforever

Is going to shock everyone. I don't know where they are going with it, but I have a feeling she might not make it to season 4. Hopefully I'm wrong. Her narrative is the frame to the picture that is Boardwalk Empire. She perfectly adds color to the times and does so in an incredibly interesting and compelling way. It's just genius. In fact the female characters on this show might be the strongest ever of any HBO series. Margaret, Lucy, Billie, Jillian, Angela, etc.

  • Owen leans over to Nucky and tells him he heard from Rothstein's people that the hit on Gyp, while responsible for quite the body count, didn't succeed in taking out Gyp.

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 3:32 p.m. CST

    Nucky is such a dick

    by Jason

I'm not sure if this is the direction the creators wanted to go, but Nucky is increasingly looking like he's in over his head and compensating by being an insufferable asshole to everybody. I'm really enjoying the show, but more and more, I'm kinda rooting against Nucky.

  • Oct. 15, 2012, 4:46 p.m. CST

    I agree Kingslayer.

    by heylookoverthere

For me it's mostly his odd obsession/possessiveness with Bille Kent. Ok she's cute but he could probably find someone comparable who wasn't banging other dudes. It'd be one thing if it didn't bother him but it clearly does. Looking back it might have been better if driving plots of seasons two and three were switched and this season was about Jimmy/The Commodore's coup attempt.

  • She's far from ugly, and definitely cute, but not a knockout just based on her face/body, but it's that moxy and cadence and personality that makes her super sexy.

    by albert comin

I think it's fair to say that in regard to Billie, Nucky is not showing the best of judgement since the first episode, something Rothstein felt the need to call him out on it. Something tells me Nucky will pay very dearly for it. Or rather, Billie will.

And i'm loving Van Halden's wife more and more.

    by albert comin

First, it was the scene when she got naked (thank you), where it proved that she is indeed a hot babe underneath all that prude clothing. And now she revealed to not only be a very loyal wife, but she is a fighting lioness!! Nobody messes with her man!! Fucking hell! I want more of her. Naked would be fine too. And really, who in here is finding Van Halen to be a sympathetic and tragic figure? I feel nothing put pity for him. And now he truly has fallen.
