Sylvester Stallone vs Robert DeNiro in THE GRUDGE MATCH!!! It's a boxing flick. They fight.
Hey folks, Harry here... According to the DEADLINE Sylvester Stallone is going to fight Robert DeNiro in a film called THE GRUDGE MATCH! They say that GET SMART'S Peter Segal is directing... and well, he directed TOMMY BOY so I'll kind of always love Peter Segal. The Fight Promoter that sets up the fight will be played by Kevin Hart. I understand this is set to be a comedy, but I hope when it comes to the fight, it's brutally hilarious. Wow, Balboa vs LaMotta... that's one we haven't seen!

I was wrong.

Why not use the star power of Rocky Balboa to promote a fight with Robert Deniro. If this were a real fight with two guys in their 60's, it would be laughed off the stage. Its a good thing that Stallone does all kinds of steroids to stay ripped, but Deniro is gonna need some of his supply to make this fight look decent. They should really have these two guys fight for real and just film it. That may be a little better than the staged fight we are going to get.

Oh come on. Stallone's forearm alone could destroy Deniro.
by wcolbert
Even at his age, there's no way I could ever see Deniro winning a fight. Hell...I could take Deniro. Not that I'd want to. I like him. But just saying. I suppose that's why it's a comedy.

I liked it when it was called Diggstown
by Walton Goggins Giant Breasts
At least that's the kind of vibe I get from what I've heard on this project anyhow. And if this is half as good as that underseen little boxing gem from the 90's then I'm there. Regardless, must say I approve of the Stallone career comeback that has happened over the last few years. Sly seems to have found himself a nice little niche in modern cinema and its cool to be able to look forward to new Stallone films again.
-
he's not funny and even his voice is annoying as hell...please stop hiring him
-
Such a shame. The concept is good.
-
Come on - how's that gonna work?

@cobalt2015 - so Stallone will murder De Niro and it will be funny?
by John Brennick
Actually, that does sound funny.

If it was DeNiro when he played LaMotta v Stallone as early 80s Rocky, my money would be on DeNiro.
by papabendi
As someone who actually boxed, for me DeNiro showed some real technique and ability in those fight scenes. He threw proper punches and combos, moved his head correctly, and looked like a pro fighter at times. Stallone as Rocky has rarely if ever looked like a convincing boxer. He throws arm punches, and combos of three and four consecutive hooks. That kind of fighter would be murdered in an actual ring. The fight scenes in the Rocky films always left me scratching my head. Now? Stallone takes so many PEDs and DeNiro has aged so badly, it wouldn't look good on screen. But it is a comedy, so maybe they will play that angle up.
-
...I love Bobby but Sly's forearms are as thick as my bloody leg. CARNAGE!!!
-
Papa is right, Sly can't fight for beans. DeNiro looks like the real fighter

Boxers don't have an old timers day... That being said, doing this as a comedy is probably the only way this can and might work, as others here have noted. Wow, between The Expendables, the upcoming prison film with The Governator Arnie, now boxing with DeNiro, looks like Sly is zooming through his bucket list of people he wants to work with at a pretty good clip. Hey, Stallone, call up Eastwood fast while there's still time while you're at it!
-
..to conceal his serious withered paunch under some muscle padding or something?
-
DeNiro... you were going to make a movie with Pesci and Scorcese... now this???
-
Sagging old men alert.

Wasn't this originally titled 'Expendable Jockstraps'?
by James Robinson
... seems to ring a bell >_< just sayin'
-
It's been a while since he transformed himself.
-
Have to say, while Stallone is clearly in fantastic shape for his age (or ANY age!), that doesn't make him a fighter. Six Rocky films and not once did the guy even resemble a boxer - no display of boxing skills at all. De Niro, on the other hand, had three real fights in the run up to Raging Bull, two of which he won. He was trained by Jake LaMotta, who said he had real potential and would have made an excellent pro if he'd taken a different career path. Which can be seen from the way he performs in the fight scenes; he looks like a REAL boxer. I say that if De Niro gets into something resembling shape (he's capable of it - the man is no stranger to obsessive preparation!) he wins in a boxing ring. Infinitely more talented as a boxer. On the other hand, if it's a weight lifting contest or a sit-up competition I reckon he's outmatched.
-
Having said all that, why is De Niro wasting his time with this shit? Wasn't he supposed to be lining up a return to form with Scorsese and Pesci in "The Irishman"? We need another great De Niro performance, not a ropey retread of Diggstown.

If its supposed to be a comedy why is Kevin Hart in it?
by kindofabigdeal
Ba dum tss
-
just gimme my check already
-
For "Rocky III", and he said that by the time they were finished Sly would have made a decent 3-round fighter. Said that Sly and his brother used to really scrap in the ring, and they had to keep them apart, though...
-
I'd hate for younger generations to remember DeNiro for the Focker movies and whatever this is.

starring cgi deniro! pacino as his trainer! gene hackman as sleezy promoter!
by vulturess
sly who?
-
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah.
-
They need to have Sly square off against Arnie. Before they get too old to spar. Enough of the team ups already. Have them going properly up against each in a movie and you'll be printing money!
-
De Niro might win on points, but a Stallone rip to the ribs, and it's game over.

Anyone who says what Stallone was doing in the Rocky films was boxing needs to get a clue to what boxing really is.

Just looked at IMDB. Not counting supporting roles: 2001 The Score - decent flick, but not great 2000 Meet the Parents - when it was still a novelty to have De Niro doing comedy 2000 Men of Honor - Decent flick 1998 Ronin - One of my fav action flicks of all time! so yeah, its been 10+ years since we've been getting decent De Niro flicks. I think the last "great" performance we've seen was Heat in 95. You can definitely see a shift in the types of roles he starts taking in the late 90's early 00's.

14 years ago. Yeah.

Once upon a time, having the DeNiro name was instant publicity. So sad. And his last great movie was Heat.

Need more information, assuming this actually comes to pass...
by Bill C.
...and if it does I'm holding the fuck out for a scene where Dwayne Johnson (in a cameo as the obligatory "young buck") gets utterly suckerpunched and taken out by one or both of these guys for some nebulous reason. Age and treachery, bitches!

I finally got around to seeing Expendables 2 this week at the discount theater. Easily the worst movie I've seen this year.
by Bobo_Vision
It was stink awful with horrible dialogue, and a cameo by Chuck Norris as a creepy stalker/pedophile sounding like a gay Ned Flanders. The one positive thing about the movie was Van Damme. He was great as the villain. Very intense and charming. But he wasn't enough to save this steaming pile.

Will Sasso's Robert DeNiro impersonation would have been a better choice regarding possible issues with DeNiro being out of shape like a potato.

Yeah, Ronin was probably the last good role for De Niro
by Nasty In The Pasty
Analyze This was a year later and actually pretty funny, but it started his sad decline into mugging self-parody. Ronin was the last time Bobby really seemed physically fit and on his game. I know getting old sucks, but De Niro should have moved into good supporting roles a decade ago, instead of trying to pretend he was still 35 in crappy movies like Righteous Kill (where he was bondage-fucking the 30-years-younger Carla Gugino and obviously replaced by a decades-younger stuntman whenever he had to do something more strenuous than walk briskly). He needs a new Scorsese movie like crazy...sad the only thing they've done together since Casino was provide voices for the awful Shark Tale.

Because thats the only way i see it working.

DeNiro pulled of the Cape Fear transformation when he was in his 40s which is a hella hard. I don't know if he can do it 20 years later w/o HGH or something...
by thecomedian
Maybe Sly will juice him up and then Travis Bickel can be the villain in Expendables 3.

This looks dumb. Stallone's career is better then Deniro's at this point. I'd rather see Hunter.

He really surprised me in that. Bobby D FTW!
