Ambush Bug counts down the best horror films on AICN HORROR since last Halloween – Number 21!!!
Greetings, all. Ambush Bug here. Always hoping to pass on new and exciting films for all of you ravenous readers in search of worthwhile horror, I decided to compile a list counting down to my favorite horror covered in AICN HORROR: ZOMBIES & SHARKS since October 1 of last year. Some of these films might be new to you since there isn’t a lot of horror in theaters these days that aren’t toothless remakes or watered down sequels. Theaters aren’t where the horror is at these days, I’m afraid. Some of these films have only seen the light of day on Video on Demand or simply go straight to DVD/BluRay. I’ve also compiled a few films I’ve seen advance screenings of at festivals and I’ll try to update you when you can see these films when I can.
As far as how I compiled this list? Well, I simply looked over my AICN HORROR columns over the last year and worked and reworked a list until I had 31. No real method to my madness. We’ll be counting down every day until Halloween toward my favorite horror film of the year. I’ll also provide a second film suggestion for those who can’t get enough horror that has something to do with the film I chose that day.
So let’s get to it! Chime in after the article and let me know how you liked the film I chose, how right or wrong I am, and come up with your own list…let’s go!
NUMBER 21!
MOTHER’S DAY (1980)
Directed by Charles KaufmanWritten by Charles Kaufman & Warren Leight
Starring Beatrice Pons, Nancy Hendrickson, Deborah Luce, Tiana Pierce, Fredrick Coffin, Michael McCleery
MOTHER’S DAY (2011)
Directed by Darren Lynn BousmanWritten by Scot Milam
Starring Rebecca DeMornay, Jamie King, Frank Grillo, Shawn Ashmore, Patrick John Flueger, Warren Kole, Deborah Ann Woll, & Matt O’Leary
But apart from the similarities of the three main antagonists of the film, Kaufman and Bousman’s films couldn’t be more different in tone and setting. Instead of having the campers come to Mother’s house, Bousman rips this story from the headlines having the criminal Koffin family (a nod to actor Fredrick Coffin, Ike from the original, no doubt), evicted from their home because of the economy.
The Countdown so far…
#22: THE INNKEEPERS#23: THE SNOWTOWN MURDERS
#24: THE PACT
#25: THE WRONG HOUSE
#26: SATURDAY MORNING MASSACRE
#27: SPIRIT STALKERS
#28: THE MOTH DIARIES
#29: THE SLEEPER
#30: THE AGGRESSION SCALE
#31: SICK BOY
See ya tomorrow, folks, with number 20 of the best of the best covered in AICN HORROR since last year!

Guy's heart is in the right place with all his post-Saw stuff, but it hasn't been my cup of tea. This, tho, was a bit of a revelation - he can do straight-up suspense quite well. I used to work at the agency where he's repped - was always a pleasure to deal with, seems to be genuinely charmed about what he's getting to do.

The Last House on the Left was a cult classic that nobody but your most diehard horror maven even remembered in '80 and a movie that largely would have been forgotten to the dustbin of history had the creator not gone on to become the undisputed master of popular cinema horror. Death Wish was what started the whole Revenge craze. I Spit On Your Grave , a DW knockoff, when originally released in 1978 as Day of the Woman, bombed. It was repackaged as ISOYG in 1980. Mother's Day, if anything, was a straight knockoff of Death Wish. Either way, the day Halloween was released, it curbstomped the Revenge Film and the Slasher Flick became the preemminent horror film for most of the 80's.

I mentioned all three films (LAST HOUSE, DEATH WISH, & I SPIT) in the review as inspirations for the original MOTHER'S DAY. Just griping to be griping?

Both versions have slipped through the cracks, but no time like the present to catch up.

Err, I've been digging this column but that's got me questioning its credibility a little bit now. Some of these flicks at the end of this list are pretty awful, and I kid of assumed that came with being at the bottom of a list of 25, but certainly Father's Day is better than more than a few of these films already named, and not by even a small margin.

Definitely should have made the list... One of the coolest lo-budget flicks to come by in years, and aicn as a collective has literally shit the bed in covering the thing... I'm w/ the above poster, this column has lost me.

Started hot and just keeps getting hotter with age [sigh]

He/She/It simply exists to gripe and complain insufferably while bemoaning the lack of quality in everything, everywhere. I'm beginning to think that they're really Devin Faraci on one of his multiple AICN accounts.
