Shailene Woodley May Bring A Certain Redhead Back For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2!!

The Kidd here...
While you wonder whether or not Emma Stone's version of Gwen Stacy will come to meet the same fate as in the comics, it appears casting is underway to bring Peter Parker's other notable love interest into the mix for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Shailene Woodley has received an offer to join the Spidey sequel as Mary Jane Watson, according to Variety.
Woodley put herself on the radar with her superb supporting performance in THE DESCENDANTS. And while she's currently shooting an adaptation of THE SPECTACULAR NOW, the only other project that looks to be occupying space in her calendar is the indie WHITE BIRD. That leaves her wide open to take the role last held by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi trilogy of Spidey films.
We're still in the dark as to what direction the next chapter in "the untold story" will take... although I'd suggest that in Marc Webb's return, he figures out what the hell they're doing with this Peter's parents story arc. We're moving towards the eventual reveal of Norman Osborn, hence the Green Goblin. It's just a matter of whether or not that's going to be sooner or later.
With what I've heard of Emma Stone's contract situation...
***SPOILER ALERT***
She was only signed for two total films, whereas Andrew Garfield was locked up for three, so take that for what it's worth when figuring out how long Gwen Stacy might last...
***END SPOILER***
...it might be prudent to start introducing and establishing MJ right away.

MJ's got big tits. And No, Amazing finally did spidey justice. Shuddap man.
-
Yep, because Peter Parker was always a modern-day skater-douched, who solely went on the hunt for Uncle Ben's murderer (instead of criminals in general), and deliberately dishonored dying people's wishes. But, hey, he had web-shooters and told more jokes than Maguire, so he must've been done justice, huh? Fuck outta here with that shit.

Its seemed like it was really trying and had a few good moments, but wasn't that great.

As mentioned above though, she would require augmentation of the breastal area.

As for Garfield's take on Peter Parker - I enjoyed it infinitely more than whiny Toby Parker
by zillabeast
I'm no follower of the comics. I just the enjoy movies. As a film, I found 'Amazing' to be pretty fucking good. Only seen it the one time still, but it stands right up there with Rami's 1st film. Spider-Man 2 is a wee bit overrated. It's still good, but gets way too mushy for me with the terrible Peter-MJ business. Snooze. Garfield and Emma did it better.
-
The only praise she gets is for playing an obnoxious teen in the descendants. That's all she can play. She was supposed to be the protagonist on her abc family show, but wound up being entirely unlikable no matter what they did to try and fix it. If you want a soap opera actress as MJ, then fuckin go for it

I mean, geez, if they can make a fucking spider-man swing through the sky, I'm fairly certain she's gonna look goddamn hot.

Jayma Mays is too old and as someone playing a teacher or whatever on a highschool show it would be odd for her to go on to play a highschooler. No, Lily Cole might work. Heavy on the MIGHT, but I don't know if her acting chops are there. Look for someone around that age. (Emma Stone is 23) Maybe a year younger.

He did. Liz Allan. She could easily play Liz. I would not have a problem with that.
-
It seems like she's getting a lot of praise for her acting, but I just haven't seen much of her work. My wife liked watching "Secret Life of the American Teenager", so I saw her performances on it, and they weren't so good. It could have just been awful writing, and just because it's a bad show overall. Or it could be that she has honed her skills while working with good directors. I haven't even even watched much of that show, as it kept getting worse, even for my wife to watch. But good for her, if she's finally doing well as an actress.
-
Oct. 11, 2012, 3:39 a.m. CST
Mr chiefroberts is right, that photo above doesn't do her justice.
by albert comin
There's glamour photos of her that definatly make her look like a model type hottie. Maybe they will be able to pull off MJ with her. Besides, isn't MJ supposed to be an anoying, obnoxious shallow type girl at the start? If memory serves, when MJ first enters Parker's life, she's a shallow party girl, and her road to emotional maturity starts with Gwen's death, the first time in her life when someone she knew died and changes her outlook in life. If the next movie call pull off the moment when MJ conforts Parker after Gwen's death, then that's when they have justified the choice of actress. But something tells me that Gwen might die only by the 3rd movie. If she dies! It's not the first time the movies have gone against canon, isn't it?
-
Lily Cole can act. Watch her in "The Moth Diaries". The heavyweight acting is not on her shoulders, but she holds her own on camera quite well against the other trained professional actresses.
-
Now excuse me whilst I figure out how to get inside that box.

Amazing Spiderman captures the feel of the Romita Spiderman years
by Chishu Ryu
In the 60's, when Stan Lee brought in John Romita to replace Steve Ditko, the purpose was to completely change the direction of Spiderman. Under Steve Ditko (who before Spiderman had done mostly horror fantasy stories for Marvel), Spiderman had the feel of a quirky teen horror adventure (maybe not unlike what Sam Raimi was doing with his own Spiderman trilogy). Under John Romita, Stan would take Spiderman in the direction of a teen romance comic book (similarly, Romita had done mostly romance comics for Marvel up to that time). Marc Webb captured that teen romance feel with Amazing Spiderman. The dynamic relationship of Peter and Gwen in the movie nailed what Stan Lee was trying to achieve in those Romita stories, modernized it, and maybe surpassed it. That first kiss on the rooftop felt like a teenager's first real kiss. This was the true feel of what was going on in those classic Stan Lee/John Romita comics. And Marc Webb cinematized it to near perfection. I look forward to his continued vision as he continues the story with Mary Jane Watson and brings those old stories to life for me.

by thatswhatshesaid
-
And I'm not sure I want to see it. Raimi nailed it with his Spiderman. The nerd fighting back, the wrestling match, Uncle Ben and the guilt after his death. THAT kiss. It's a shame that it went off the rails at the end, but just HOW do you translate the Green Goblin on screen without pissing off half of the fans?
-
Karen Gillen.
-
I mean it depends to me you can't off her before you introduce Green Goblin. But if you're not introducing the Goblin until the 3rd than it kind of makes it hard to see them killing her in the 2nd. I mean if Sony really had balls they would have her killed in the 3rd movie, with Peter full of rage come short of killing the Goblin.
-

Karen Gilliam as MJ? That's rather brillant!! What an excelent idea.
by albert comin
She pratically is a MJ type in Doctor Who. The question would be if she can act out of her natural scotish accent. Even in Who she plays a scotish. But other then that... good choice. All you would need then was to give her green eye color contacts. And allow me to offer an alternative choice, and keeping this british: Rachel Hurd Wood. She gorgeaus, she's still the right age to lay a teen, she's a model type beauty, she's very charismatic onscreen and she can act! And red hair looks great on her, as seen in "Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer".
-
Hello again. I'd say that both Raimi and Webb nailed it. And a funny thing is that one movie has what lacks in the other. The perfect Spider-Man movie would be one that could mix both elements from the Raimi and Webb movies. Some recent "re-imaginings" (i hate that expression but i couldn't think of a better one right now) of comic book heroes movies which had previous screen incarnations were inprovements of olders, like Dredd and Batman Begins. however, with the newest Spider-Man movie, instead of it feeling like a displacement, it feels more like a complement. Not very common.
-

Mary Elisabeth Winstead is more a Gwen Stacy type to me.
by albert comin
Winstead is very pretty, but she is a wholesome girl next door type (the girl next door to end all girls next door), which is not what MJ is suppose to be, i guess.
-
And it feels that it will go that way. The way i see it, the only real problem we have to worry about is not so much where the story is heading, but how it will do it, because, unless you have forgotten already, the guys hired to write the sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man are non other then Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
-
I was wondering about a sequel.

1. Spider-Man removies his mask in every scene 2. The crane scene
by Autodidact
Between those two things I can never watch this movie again. I will say that they really nailed the look of Spider-Man in the comics during the action. He assumes most of the classic web-swinging poses as drawn in the comics, whereas the Raimi movies seemed to have their own rubbery movement style for him. So things at least look good in any action scene until halfway through when Spider-Man removes his mask... then it looks all wrong.

Good looking girl and nice performance in "Descendants" as far as the role demanded, but I don't see her as MJ
-
You worry so much about whether an actor or actress has the right "look", you forget about the whole acting thing. Which, as it turns out, is kind of important. And next thing you know, you got The Fantastic Four. This Shailene Woodley may not look like a model, but guess what, she was the best thing in The Descendants. I think she can handle a fucking Spiderman movie.

And I still am not that interested in seeing the new movie.

WILL be the death of comics on film. Can a director have an interpretation? I thought the last movie made Raimi looked like a hack. Webb hired some real performers that realized characters that made me care whether they lived or died. Marc Webb was such a bold choice to make this film, and you need to at least cut some slack, because I imagine a reboot happening this quickly couldn't have been easy. But man, did you naysayers see the same movie that I did? It was a great movie, and I feel sorry for the fanboys in this case. You get so caught up in these comics that if the film doesn't look like it was literally peeled off the page, then you despise it. I'm surprised you don't get pissed because the movie was presented in 24 frames a second, and not a literal comic book that flipped before you on screen. Please get over this, and maybe, just maybe you can then recognize the great film that was made. Also, someone mentioned Woodley being too short to be a model. I always thought she appeared to be tallish. Checked, and the girl is 5'8". Tall for a girl. Ok, I'm done. I leave you fanboys to your complaints that Hugh Jackman isn't the 5'4" Wolverine you remembered in the comics!

Maybe the construction worker didn't really care about helping Spidy. Maybe they just thought it would look cool to see him swinging. And it did.
-
I'm willing to give it a try, but i know I'll be thinking of how close the Raimi version was to the origin story in the comic. The CGI hasn't aged too well though, and as a previous talkbacker said, he looks too rubbery.
-
Just sayin'

Time for another reboot already - will SOMEONE get this right?
by Behemoth
I was ecstatic when I heard the news that Spidey was being rebooted from the Raimi crapfests that got progressively worse with each film. Never liked MacGuire, Dunst, etc., and all the "mask must immediately come off" moments. And then I finally saw TAS, and many of the same problems were there. Inexplicable tampering with the Spiderman back story, mask coming off EVERY FUCKING OTHER SECOND, stupid changes like the yellow eyes. YELLOW EYES. WHY? I despise everyone associated with these films. The first sucked rhino taint, and I'm sure this one will as well. Spidey is probably the best superhero in the Marvel stable, and these imbecile, cretinous pieces of wormridden filth just can't get it right. The stories are THERE already. The character is THERE already. The costume is THERE already. Fuck you. And all hail Dredd.

Those who defend it are teens. "I loved how edgy he was" or whatever their defense is. Look at the movie as a whole. It's terrible and never has any fun with anything. Character development was so terrible. Lizard looked worse than any CGI from the 90's. Terrible. They can make up for it though... It looks like they are setting up a home run. Norman Osborn obviously will become a giant Green Goblin monster. He should kill Gwen. If they make this work it will be a win for them and erase most of their pointless and stupid mistake from the first film.
-
Think about they are all about the genetic monster angle. So if it's Lizard then Green Goblin then... Venom? Carnage? Rhino? I'm interested to see where they will go with this. Maybe introduce a new Venom for a spin off movie?
-
She's a red head. Cute. Can act. I don't see why she isn't almost instantly in the running.
-
Pointless and instantly forgettable film with a very unlikeable, a-hole version of Spiderman. The only cool thing I remember was the new laser-guided webshooters. Otherwise a complete waste of time. They shouldn't even bother with a sequel--oh and this girl looks nothing like MJ, btw.
-
Really I can't think of a better way to sum up this Amazingly Dissapointing Spider-Man flick. And I was hoping it was gonna be great but as the promotions started and the trailers came about, all hope was in fact... Doomed.
-
The last one was every bit as bad as I thought it would be. At least the first two Rami films had heart. ASM was a heartless, cold turd.
-
I don't like where they're going with this genetic mutation business. It's obvious that they're going for the Ultimate Spiderman story/characters, but the villain designs in that series are so very uninspired. If anyone has played the Amazing Spiderman game, you'd see there's very little variation from the villain designs. Scorpion and Rhino were decent, but there's just something off about the hybrid versions. I'm sure GG will be the Ultimate version, which is just a glowing, steaming version of the 616 Hulk villain Abomination, which sucks so very badly.

Garfield's Parker is closer to the comic book Parker than Maguire's. SFX were solid. Loved the more natural movement of Spiderman too. Don't get the nerd hate for the "crane scene". What the hell was wrong with it? It was a fun, straight out of the comics, action scene with the city-folk embracing and helping out their newfound hero. Woodley as MJ? Hmm...maybe. I was cool with the idea of NO MJ at all in this series.

... was that it was in and of itself a decent movie, but in the grand scheme of things it was entirely generic, predictable superhero movie that offered nothing new, innovative, or exciting (except for the 3D effects, which were ehhh). It was a Spider-Man movie, even a good one, but overall it was a tired exercise. I expected much more from Webb.

It's got to be out on DVD soon? I refused to watch in the cinemas because every spot I saw made me hate The Amazing Spider-man. The fact Peter acts like a jerk when webbing that guy. The fact he put himself into the back of a car when the criminal had a gun, meaning he had no room to manouver. The silver trainers, and the rest of that terrible new costume. Peter didn't seem to be a geek. The list goes on. So is it worth one watch (for someone who genuinely loves the comics, the 90s cartoon, and the Raimi films)

I liked how it took us step by step on Peter Parker's journey from nerd of super-hero. And every step made perfect sense. The lizard was scary, snout or no snout and the cast in total was excellent. I don't let one stupid sequence spoil a whole movie for me like some people here.

If you throw TDKR in the same sentence as Amazing, you have problems
by Kremzeek
In my opinion, of course. TDKR was an amazingly great film. Loved it. And Hardy's Bane was EVERY BIT as good as Ledger's Joker. "Amazing"... eh. Take it or leave it. Not awful, but not great either. And, of course, it wasn't even needed or asked for in the first place. I don't see how the 2 films are even comparable.
-
I quite enjoyed it, but the final reel was lame. I would say that Webb doesn't really have a good feel for directing action, on this evidence. The rest of the movie, the chemistry between Garfield and Stone etc, was fine.

Um, no ... she wasn't. She seemed to have been praised for her good acting (mostly by male critics, who let their horniness get in the way of their good judgement) because she had one moment where she cried and then dived under water with her face screwed up in an unhappy face. THAT'S IT. The rest was horny males projecting "good acting" on the exploitative bikini scenes, esp that one where she was sunning her back with her bikini top unstrapped. I don't know how old she was in that film, but she seemed 15 or 16, and shouldn't have been exploited that way. Descendants was a piece of shit movie ... a divorced man's fantasy about his ex wife dropping dead before she could take his kids and half his estate.

That's the point of the character - it's the contrast between her and Pete that is the interest. Totally out of character for either to be with the other, but somehow they fall in together. Their contrast allows us to explore Pete's wild/superficial side and MJ's vulnerable inner side. It's very simple. Why can't filmmakers get it?

...for Spider-Man to become Spider-man. Raimi's films did a lot of things right with Peter's characterization, but could have used the death of Gwen Stacy. It's almost as important as the death of uncle Ben. Without the death of Gwen Stacy, any movie version of Spider-Man is a hollow shadow of the classic comic book character. This girl is ug-er-ly. Terrible nose and unattractive smile. Karen Gillan is sexy as hell but cannot act for all the shortbread in Scotland I'm afraid. Surely there must be a few gorgeous redheads on a par with Deborah Ann Woll out there?

http://tinyurl.com/92obfyn Totally vaVaVOOM but with a girl-next-door sweetness to her face.

The irony is that Karen Gilliam is of college student age. She is one of the youngest actresses to play a doctor companion.

in fact, Karen Gilliam is younger then both Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone

In that last picture you posted, she looks quite a lot like Mary Elizabeth Winstead. And nobody calls her ugly, right? Too bad she's not model tall, oh well.

well on a side note, I did know that Matt Smith is the youngest Doctor ever. but damn, I thought Gillan was like 26-27
by TheSeeker7
and even if she is in reality younger than the others, I still say oddly enough she plays too old on screen.

Karen Gillan is 24. Emma Stone is 23 (ops, i blundered there). Andrew Garfield is 29. My second choice of MJ, Rachel Hurd-Wood is 22.

And i think Emma Stone looks older then Gillam, actually.

Yes indeed. The age of the actress is immaterial. It's how they look/carry themselves that counts. Ashley Greene - pretty but looks a bit too hard-faced and haggard to play a fun, fresh-faced teen. MEW - no. Odd face. Eyes too close together. Looks slightly Asian. Again, too old. Next.

@scirocco Not all models need to be haute couture runway model tall.
by Bedknobs and Boomsticks
Shorter girls, especially since her character is teenager to early 20's, are very often models for catalogs and teen girl magazines articles and ads. I always pictured her more of a catalog type, as opposed to potentially more famous international runway model type.

I honestly think Gillan would play too old on screen. I don't think I can buy her as that right between high school and college age.

That's a very good arguent, and could explain why MJ in the comics never became an international super-model (as far as i know). So, in that regard, Rachel Hurd-Wood would be perfect, since she is not very tall (reasonably tall but not that is very noticable, thus fill in the requirements for olderirl playing a ten) she is very very pretty and a very beievable model type but also has a bit of girl next door quality that would be easy to pull off. I have seen photos of Hurd-Wood who she looks like a model and othrs where she looks like a girl next door. She has quite a very versitabe look, and that would be a plus for an actress playing MJ. And she's a damn good actress too. You know who i think would also be dead perfecto pay MJ? We would need for her to age a bit, but not because she needs more acting training because she is already exceptional: Elle Fanning. She's already very pretty and will grow to be a heart-breaker, she's quite tall for her age, model tall and thus already look older then her age, she would then be an adult but still in the right age to pass as a teen, and she is one hell of an actress, very good at playing nuances of character and change of emotions and characer mood in the same scene. And she sells smart quite well. She could play very well a character that is seemly an emptyheaded party girl but has hidden depths to her that came to the fore when tragedy strikes te life of Peter Parker andshe would be believabel fast friend through shared pain and sadness and later a sympathetic love interest.
-
but I've never seen her act. Can she do accents? Elle Fanning pretty? Hmm. I wouldn't say so. She can look good in photos, but I've seen some men look attractive (in the feminine sense) with the right make-up and lighting. Of course those tricks are available to film-makers too.

Remember those words a few years down the line when you see Elle in photos and movies. Remember those when you fall inlove with her.

Rachel Hurd-Wood is quite a very good actress. And i think she did an americana ccent in "An american Hauting" and nobody complained, and she was still a teen then.

The movie was bashed for many other reasons but not her acting.

The movie can do whatever it wants, PARKER IS STILL A CONFIDENT WISE-A$$ LONER GEEK SCIENTIST AND MJ IS STILL AN ATTENTION OBSESSED WH*RE, in my amazing spider man world at least.

I though the bdefining characteristic of Peter Parker was his insecurities, not his wise-assness.
