More Spy Shots Of Kinnaman As ROBOCOP!!
These pics have, evidently, been in circulation for a few days...but I haven't seen them getting much play. So, let's change that!
These are similar to those leaked set photos which brought us our first look at Joel Kinnaman as the title character from the forthcoming ROBOCOP remake - but larger and clearer, with better angles.
This new batch was found at WhatWouldTylerDurtdenDo? and called to our attention by Aint It Cool reader Dario. A few images are presented herein - but jump to WWTDD? for an expanded and embiggenable gallery.

I still hate it. Is his pistol still stored in his thigh?
by bigbaldpapa
-
this is not robocop! Like a new actor playing indiana jones with a baseball cap and a sword.
-
Apparently there's quite a few variations of the suit within the film. I prefer this one a lot
-
now lose the arm, okay?!
-
Original actually looked like a robot.
-
1) The laziness of this costume, ripping off Nolan's Batman series and GI Joe, 2) The laziness of this site, making "news" by posting shit other sites have tracked down, 3) Use of the n-word by all races.

Will he talk in a silly Batman voice? Or will he be autotuned?
by Spandau Belly
And wouldn't the police put some sort of logo on him?
-
Greed, Money & the proliferation of a production system largely based on a risk-averse denominator.
-
Still not too sure about the human right hand. The original made a point of him being almost all robot. (lifted from imdb) Tyler: [while creating RoboCop] We were able to save the left arm. Bob Morton: What? I thought we agreed on total body prosthesis, now lose the arm okay!
-
you beat me to it :)
-
A remake nobody wanted, with a suit that looks about as banal as can be imagined.
-

You can tell he's wearing black under armour pants when he bends his joints. Ugh.
by CodeName
-
I already know the point of it. It's going to be used in some ultra-cheeseball metaphor sequence as he struggles between the fight between his human and machine side. I'm thinking he will be following his programming and forced to gun down someone close to him in the past when he was still fully human (I'm guessing a partner in the police force who got too close to a conspiracy with Omnicorp). She would plead with him not to kill her before yelling something like "You're Alex Murphy!!" He pauses. Looks down at his human hand and his machine hand. His human hand tightens to a fist symbolizing the human side won out. He turns and starts blowing the shit out of Omnicorp.
-
And watching RoboCable stomping around in the 'Prime Directives' movies earlier this week doesn't help, either. It looks better than the matte black suit, certainly, but it still doesn't look memorable yet...that said, static shots only do yay much. We need a full-suit motion shot. We need a trailer...
-
Make the suit black. Black suggests "edgy". And let's have it in segmented rubber pieces, like Batman. That tests well across all marketing segments.
-

Laziness. Absolute laziness. -Namaste-
-
Or, you know...he just didn't have the full costume on.
-
Is the fact there can't be a scientific purpose of them using what I assume is his hand. Plus this joke has been made but it really just looks like a jerk off hand.
-
Every title has some form of the word "rise" in it nowadays and this design looks like The Dark Knight Rises meets Rise of Cobra. Anyway, this should set box office records, just like other 80s/90s remakes like Total Recall and Dredd.

1998?
-
They'd be able to really go in a new direction and design the suit so that parts of it really look like it could only be robotic. What I mean is that this CLEARLY looks like a man in a suit. At no point do you believe that, say, a leg is too thin to house a human leg. This looks more like a super-charged exo-suit instead of a robotic replacement for human parts that simply no longer exist. Hell, even the original film featured incredible makeup by Rob Bottin that made it look like Weller's face was grafted onto a metal skeleton. They really could have done some interesting things with the suit if they'd just been creative, but this just seems like lazy design. Sure, there will be CG enhancements, such as things that have to pop out of the frame, but I'm just getting a vibe that the filmmakers lacked the ambition to do anything interesting at all with the design. It really is IRON MAN's cousin's barber's lawn mower's snap-tite "U CAN BE IRON MAN TOO!" kit-builder suit.

Robocock. This film is going to suck so much robocock.
by Bradly Durant
-
I suspect the actor removes the robohand between takes so he can pick shit up. Those gloves look like mittens. Same reason he's not wearing the mask in these shots - so he's more functional/comfortable when they're not actually filming.
-
Fuck off ... go watch the Elite Squads and perhaps then you'll give Padhila the benefit of the doubt. This isn't the original Robocop. What did you expect? I love the shit out of the original movie but realize they are updating the movie ... at least wait until the fucking trailer.

Wanking hand...
-
Cool outfit, no doubt about that, but it looks more man in suit than robot. But that's just me.
-
And to those of you who kept saying "well mayyybe they'll cgi the suit"... it's pretty clear at this point (especially given the OCP logo on his chest...and how stupid is that by the way) that they'll be using this. I'm assuming this is the same day the other pics were snapped as he is still missing his glove. Either way...looks like 100%, not from concentrate, pure unadulterated jungle-rotted monkey ASS. It really does. Maybe they'll show us some things later on that'll make us all change our minds about this picture. At present, it sure doesn't look like it, though.

Awww, poor baby. Its not your daddy's robocop, boo hoo. Look man, if I have elevate the tone of my argument in favor of this looking fucking awesome, to offset the blind hatred for it (when we all know shit looks stupid in set picutres) then so be it. I have watched the original 1,000 fucking times, its one of my favorites. I've been waiting for another decent Robocop movie forever. In my opinion this will be it. Awesome cast, and Robocop looks like, holy shit, A MORE MODERN ROBOCOP! I mean, does this set pic from the 87 one really look all that much cooler? He still has a human hand so he can sit on it, make it go to sleep and then give himself "the stranger"...
by REMcycle
...Yes, it's just a guy in a suit and it looks like absolute shit. Shit shit shit.
-
Is so he can shake hands and maintain a warm, human touch when dealing with civilians.
-
is that in the original Robocop the skin of Weller's head was extended to over the edge of the helmet. It made it look like the helmet was in fact his skull. Here, it's just a guy with a metal helmet on.
-

Suit looks like suit not like robot "coffin"/shell...
by TheRaidKickedYourAss
...which is how it should be. Murphy is dead and so is his suit. His suit is hard and ridgid looking. Not ergonomic and comfortable to move in. Fluidity of movement should not look as though it can occur. This suit looks like a suit. Not like a robotic shell. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think this movie will be good enough to warrant owning it for the sake of repeat viewings. Just like The Amazing Spiderman for me unfortunately. :(
-
Yes, dude, Peter Weller's Robocop looks way cooler. More like a...oh, I don't know, a Robot rather than a man in a suit. Look at how his face looks like skin pulled over metal...that shit still easily holds up today.
-

I think if you gave the original design a 21st century makeover you could have something great...
by KEVIN_COSTNERS_RECYCLED_PISS
But not THIS. Come on, it looks like superhero body armor. It looks like those accelerator suits from G.I Joe or that ninja from Metal Gear Solid. Nothing about that design says robot.
-
I'll never forget watching this guy on the first season of "The Killing." He's brilliant. He jumped off the screen. Like masteryoda, I'll wait and see. As much as I love the first film, this HAS to be seen for its own merits. (As any remakes do.)

They better CG the hell out of that suit in post. That's there only hope.
by Doctor_Nefario
-
and the fact that it was sold by peter weller's performance acting like a robot is even cooler. It really made you believe he was a cyborg. A truly inspired design, how do you even come up with something so iconic out of the blue?? The original suit is as iconic as the original predator design, the t-800 skeleton, the aliens. Why would you try to fuck with that? I understand making a few tweaks here and there but this is a total disaster looking at the pics. Maaaybe on film it will take on a different look/feel..But i just cant imagine how..This needs a trailer ASAFP!! They're fucking with our heros!

1. as others have said, maybe they'll cgi the shit out of this bitch. and then it'll look good. 2. they couldn't just totally redo the original suit, that would just make this look like a sequel, not a reboot. 3. Maybe it serves a purpose in the story. Maybe this isn't even his final design. Ok carry on, bitches.

by quicksilver80
-
Is being kept for fingerprint/identity purposes or something. Like it unlocks his gun for use or gives only him access to certain police databases. Or some shit, I dunno...
-
the original looks WAY BETTER! I'll pay attention to what people have to say before I pay a dime to see the new one but that pic you posted looks awesome. HE LOOKS LIKE HALF MAN/HALF ROBOT. BTW... Weller looks like a MAN... not a pretty boy in a GI Joe costume.
-
Urgh. The original worked so well because it was so bulky and *gasp* robotic. It was like a walking tank. 10 quid says this one will be running and jumping and leaping all over the place.
-
Seeing is believing, i guess.
-
Will at least make that cool electrical humming noise and have the spacy sound fx when he opens doors and moves his joints and such. And they reverb the voice correctly.

This suit looks ok, but I HATE, HATE, HATE - the bare hand, that is just a terrible, terrible idea. Not crazy about the visor either.

Sorry Kinnaman, you were close, but after this it won't be so easy for you anymore.
by DidntPullOutInTimeCop
Jesus, that suit is really 0% innovative. They should've just used the original. The original needed a skinny guy inside to make the proportions so "impossible". This one took a skinny guy and made him muscly with the suit. Dumb.
-
How come the "Robocop" design has been so radically altered, yet the "OCP" logo, featured prominently on the suit where his silver-dollar nippies should be, is the EXACT SAME FUCKING LOGO FROM 1987?!?
-
Remakes are futile.
-
Oct. 10, 2012, 10:44 a.m. CST
They aren't going to do heavy makeup for scenes where he has the helmet on
by glenn_the_frog
For everyone complaining that Weller's had the skin pulled over the head and whatnot (Which did look cool) I'm sure these shots are from between takes with the helmet on. If there's an extended sequence with the helmet off, he won't have the cushy padding around his head. As for the hand? Weller took his gloves off between takes too. It's not the complete final design. But given that these have leaked, they SHOULD do some spin control and release a real studio snapshot soon.
-
Like a screamy face that is saying "OH NO! THIS SUUUUUUCKS!" The suit looks like a bug. It's not attractive or interesting in the least. And his hand? What the fuck is going on with his hand?
-
... and this looks like battle armor more than a cyborg. I hope the movie is awesome but if they're going to veer so far away from the classic suit, I hope they do so with the story as well.
-
The right hand being a human hand, therefore still (hopefully) connected to his human brain is likely the side he fire his gun from. So it could potentially become a plot device of where he is ordered by the corporation to kill someone (that he has feelings/compassion/wrong thing to do etc..) so that he as a human can disregard those orders and do the human thing and save the world and of course his soul. Just a thought. Mark
-
ooh, for more fun you could give a backstory to the doctor that saved his right hand, because that was his way of making Murphy "failsafe" so the machine or the people who controlled the machine could never take over the man that is Murphy. So the doctor or scientist, if you wanted you could give a really cool backstory. (The guy who helped iron man in the cave in the first movie comes to mind) One to many monster drinks :-) Mark
-
Sound plausible, except Padhila already went on record as saying more of the actor's face would be exposed. Sadly, I think there's a black salad bowl thing that comes down over his face and ... that's it. That or this. As for the hand, same deal. Two different armors, same hand exposed. One could argue that they'd want to keep the human hand, since that would be his trigger finger and his ability to manipulate small objects, as well as retain a sense of touch. Whatever.</p><p> The original went to great lengths to make it look like somebody had clumsily grafted human body parts onto a robot -- maybe they're trying to use logic here or something and suggest that the exoskeleton needed to do a better job of protecting the human parts or something. It doesn't work, but it does read like studio notes, just like every movie out now has the same fucking JJ Abrahms lens flares (THE AVENGERS, BATTLESHIP, etc.). Now, everything in an armored suit has to look like Batman or Iron Man.
-
...the original suit actually looked...how do I put it? Realistic? As if it really was a cybernetic body. This one looks like a guy in a wetsuit. We have yet to see it in context though so who knows?
-
We are talking here about one of the greatest scifi movies ever made. A perfect masterpiece. Human drama, social commentary, hard science, r-rated action. It had everything in a balanced mixture of cinematic ingenuity, which holds even today after all these years. It is an immortal movie. But they are remaking it. why oh god, why? Why the fans are interested in this blasphemy? why do they give the best reason to the studios to keep vomiting this trash remakes? Would the fans be equally anxious for a remake of Citizen Kane? ofc no. then why the fuck do they keep supporting this remake business which has killed Hollywood for good?

The claims that the face and hand are visible because they're in-between takes are, I'm sorry to say, incorrect. :) Wait for the movie. Judge it then. It's a modern take on RoboCop. A lot has changed since the 80s, including how things from the future are designed. If a real company were to build RoboCop, it would look a lot closer to this design than the one from the 80s.

at least that's what the symbol looks like on the helmet. This movie is doomed to fail, why remake a film that was lightning in a bottle (80's Verhoven, enough said) and the idea stolen from JUDGE DREDD comics? And then to go to the black suit well yet again like every other action/adventure/comic adaption out there.... oof. It hurts.

Yes, the first Robocop was awesome, but how can anyone make any kind of judgmets about how the reboot will be, simply based on this design?
-
That suit is utter shite. Production should be halted immediately and Rob Bottin parachuted in to fix the mess.
-
Just like Total Recall and Red Dawn
-
Is Kinnaman. He was the best thing about AMC's The Killing. Super flawed show, but he kept me watching.
-
Because it's an awful, cliche design? For fucks sake, he looks like Channing Tatum in GIJOE:RISE OF COBRA. He doesn't look robotic, he looks like a guy in a suit. I understand they're streamlining him, but he still looks like a guy in a suit. Not to mention the one human hand. Every shot with this guy has him with that one hand. EVERY. SHOT. It's in the movie, folks. It's part of the movie. If they were going to replace it with CG, he'd have a green or blue glove over that hand. But he doesn't have one because the actual hand is going to remain. That's how terrible a movie this is. Not only that, they actually incorporate his design into the story, 'OmniCorp' makes him look like this so he look cool. So the movie is attempting to be satirical about the way RoboCop is designed, mocking that companies make decisions with a room full of suits, when in reality RoboCop is being designed by a room full of suits. It's as though the people making the film are completely oblivious to what satire is. As for everyone saying this film will fail, it won't. I bet you this will be a box office success and lead to sequels. People suck. They'll have a marketing campaign with lots of explosions that will draw in the illiterate masses and all the people who don't know of the original. Watch.
-
The whole appeal for me with Robocop was that he was like a walking Tank, slow but inexorable. And clearly a flawed creation, with static in his vision and a bit rough around the edges.. You could definately tell he was a prototype. This design looks far too 'clean' and lean for the Robocop universe. It wouldn't surprise me if he starts bouncing around and flying like a ninja either. If he does, I think that will be final proof that they have missed the concept of what Robocop was. Final Judgement is reserved for when I see it in motion and also the 'Death' scene. Which I'm betting will be tame and lax compared to the original...
-
Wasn't the whole point about Robocop the whole "is he a man or is he a machine?" question. This just looks like a guy in a suit. Its more Six Million Dollar Man than Robocop. All fluffy and family friendly. Eek !!
-
Keep bitching and moaning... life will pass you right by
-
not some dude wearing a batman costume. i know its been said plenty, but i just want to add to the fire. seriously, the original robocop design is a million times cooler. i never had a hard time believing that it was a robot with a few human parts connected to it. this? as has been previously stated looks like they're just gonna dump some dead guy into an iron man suit. ugh.
-
Oct. 10, 2012, 1:25 p.m. CST
the suit doesn't look quite as horrible as I thought from the previous photo
by WINONA_RYDERS_PUSSY_JUICE
-
The fuck is up with that guy? He turned down Wolverine too. I know this isn't going to be an EXACT remake, but it can still be a good movie. The design of the suit (however out of context these pics are) is just kinda off putting. And that script review doesn't help. Was that ever confirmed to be an old draft? Because if there really is a scene where they shoot down the old suit as a potential design...I mean it just shows how little respect they have. They're not echoing anyone's feelings here.
-
I'll keep my original version.
-
Shut the fuck up, man. The fact that you're insulting PEOPLE for insulting a MOVIE is obnoxious. You're a moron if you can sit back and watch this movie come together and NOT mock it. For this RoboCop remake they've hired a bunch of fairly decent and well known actors, like Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman, because they're both in multibillion dollar franchises right now, they'll certainly bring some recognition to their roles, right? Oh, they're even making RoboCop look more modern and up to date! Apparently modern means making him look like everyone else? And what color is he? BLACK! Why, they even have a CGI, over the top, Transformers-esque ED-209. This movie has all the markings of a shit film with every decision for it being made by a boardroom trying to maximize the films marketing potential. You can totally see some suit in a boardroom saying, "A black, sleek looking RoboCop is WAY cooler than dull, clunky gun metal gray, right? Right? People think black is COOL! Black is cool still, right? And we need a Transformer, this is the future after all. I don't care where... but we need one. Maybe make that robot thing the cop fights into one big transformer. Yeah. I like it." They've gone with every absurd cliche they could in remaking this movie. It's like that RobotChicken episode where they mock the CGI enhanced rerelease of JAWS. Everything they could possibly do to offend people with good taste they're doing in this God awful RoboCop remake. They're doing the cliche, streamlined, 'modern' design, they're doing the over the top CG spectacle, they've got big name stars so that hopefully no one will notice the awful lines they're delivering. Now this is when you say something about how you'll wait til the movie is out to reserve judgement, and how we're a bunch of angry old people, but the bottom line is ROBOCOP and any other remakes being pumped out by the studios these days, are being made for people like you. You'll reserve your judgement for when you pay $13 to see it in 3D, and by the time you've handed over your money, the studio has already won. You'll go in, see a piece of shit remake, and the studio gets their money. No repeat business from you, of course, but that's what they're banking on, just enough money from the first round of viewers to get the franchise going again so they can continue to milk it until people beg them to stop.
-
I think we're beginning to see why Aronofsky dropped out of this film. The studio wanted to make some hip, 'realistic,' modern retelling of RoboCop that was scrutinized and molded by a boardroom into an action flick that will generate the most profit and buzz among tweens. Aronofsky probably wanted to do something creative and innovative, the studio quashed his thoughts and ideas, so he moved on to something he could exercise control over and not be forced to listen to the mad ravings and crazed demands of clueless studio executives.
-
Gen-X and Gen-Y now run and greenlight movies in Hollywood and they've always been less educated and have poorer taste and all they know how to do is adapt shows they watched as kids (or movies) since their generations have nothing to say ... still waiting for Gilligan's Island movie, Thundercats movie, and remake of remake of remake of every movie from the 80s and early 90s ... gah, it's a well of emptiness
-
On behalf of Sweden (where both I and Kinnman come from) I would like to express my deepest apologies for this turd in the making.
-
Why not just make a NEW franchise with Robo-Dark Knight here? Why even link it to Robocop if you want to do a Cool modern one pale white fleshy hand Crysis wanna-be? Oh, that's right, because if you use the Robocop name, you can take advantage of people's fond memories of the original and get MORE asses in seats to make MORE money in a throw-away franchise, and forever tarnish the original in your quest for mo' money mo' money MO' MONEY!!! Who knows, maybe people would love this suit if it was, you know, a different ORIGINAL character instead of raping the past so a giant studio conglomerate can milk more money out an era of Hollywood that actually had a higher hit-rate of quality versus the pure DRECK drivel garbage that we're forced to put up with today.

Can we all agree that we can at least be happy the suit isn't CGI?
by MJDeViant
I don't think this look bothers me as much as others AND I think Joel is a good actor, so I'll remain slightly optimistic. BUT, I am so glad we don't just have a green suit or some shit that they would add in post. ALTHOUGH, it might have been neat to have some of Joel removed because a robotic body doesn't necessarily have to take up all the space a human one does. SO he could be skinnier or have parts that have vents going through his body or something (for cooling?). I like the original Robocop but I don't think it was fantastic like everybody else. I also hate seeing remakes/reboots for the most part. For some reason though, i just don't feel so bothered by this one or the suit (because I'd imagine cops would use black. Most of their gear is black, guns are black, vests and helmets are black, etc.)

That movie was boring as fuck. I'm actually kind of hoping for a sad, R-rated, depressing Iron Man of sorts.

Thats not a behind the scenes "hes not in full costume" kinda thing, cos theres been a few different leaks over the weeks, and in every picture the guy has a human hand. The same hand ungloved. Not both of them, just the one. And from a practical point of view, it makes like zero sense. Why would they give Robocop a human hand? I mean, hes supposed to be built to withstand everything. Surely if hes under a shitload of machine gun fire or punching through stuff (which he did a lot of as I recall), surely that one human hand is more of a handicap? Unless he needs it for like...fingerprint access to OCP or something. But surely having his own fingerprints would be more of a link to his former life? Which means A) It'd be easier for him to stumble across his own past (which OCP wouldn't want to happen) or B) for criminals to find out who he was and target his family. Unless that's what they're working into the plot...but they wouldn't. Right? I mean, at least give him a glove or something, just for symmetry...

If they wanted to make Holder look as creepy as Weller then they should have made him a reverse Robocop, human body with a computer screen face (maybe where a shotgun blast blew through? *shrug*)
-
A few stills of a set piece between takes is not enough with which to evaluate a movie, especially when a pane of glass is in the way. Seems completely unkind and unfair to pass judgment on any effort, whether artistic or commercial, before it is finished. Do you like it when your boss comes in and trashes your work in progress? It's a dick move. I'm not an apologist. I'm not interested in seeing Robocop remade. But I call bullshit on all the haters. You don't know from a few images how a film will turn out.

Re:book and cover - why are we judging the whole movie based on some shots of an actor in costume?
by openthepodbaydoorshal
1) The costume design is wholly unoriginal. As stated above, it resembles other designs, Crysis, Iron Man, etc. Rob Bottin's original design looked like nothing that came before it. This looks like a lazy design. 2) The design itself, indicating an extoskeleton, means the production fails to realize that Robocop is a machine. A robot with the brain of a cop with everything else wiped out. May be wrong...but doubt it. 3) The concept of remaking Robocop at all. The original was lightning in a bottle. Script, cast, director,....everything is pretty much perfect.

Maybe, like Verhoeven's 3 masterpiece satires, this is a smokescreen...
by Aiden Blackwell
Verhoeven got Hollywood to pay him millions to satire American culture and politics right under their noses... RoboCop was a satire of corporate agendas, Total Recall was a (to this day...) hugely misunderstood satire of the audience's need to escape reality and immerse themselves in the false reality of Hollywood action films... And Starship Troopers was a satire of US foreign policy and fascism... Maybe, just maybe, this a 'stealth' satire on Hollywood remakes...? Id Padilla pulled that off under the studio's nose, we'd all bow to effigies of him... Or, maybe, its gonna suck...

This just looks so damn crappy. There is absolutely no way to improve on the original so why waste time and money? I sure wont go see this shitoid movie.
-
There's been a lot of skepticism and outright "looks terrible" on this thread, but to me, in all honesty, I think the suit looks pretty badass. Peter Weller did a great job in the original film, no doubt, but I'm feeling some fizzy sense that this film might outshine the original. The stuff people here are saying about the suit is valid, I suppose, if you're not really interested in story and have ADD. But consider the director, the cast of actors, and the fact this film will likely be rated R. Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Michael freakin' Keaton, and Jackie Earle Haley, among others, will be surrounding Joel Kinnamon in this new "Robocop." I say forget the suit and consider the crazy possibilities with that cast. Because Kinnamon himself ain't chopped liver, I'll tell you that. He was great in "The Killing," and I honestly think that with this up-and-coming director, cast, and effects budget, much of which will be practical, this film could seriously surprise people. I'm pretty fired up for it.

Above you wrote, "The original suit looked like it was designed as actual military hardware." This is a valid point if you don't know much about modern polymers. Do you? I'm not sure, I'm just asking. Because the truth is that Weller's suit in the original would've been frighteningly heavy and unwieldy, even with actual military hardware. Most pushes into the field of robotics, at MIT and CalTech, among other, far less public places, have been about making the robotic chassis as light as possible so the body can move and fight with less weight and resistance. Weller's heavy metal suit was an 1980's dream. I think the suit Padilha is presenting will update that dream, big time, to something far more ass-kicking.
-

The design is of a suit to fit a man. Not a mechanical body. Also that out fit used in GI Joe?

Seriously for all the, "It's Crysis." The power suit in that looked better. Yes Iron Man seems more robotic. However it reminds me of what ever those power suits they wore in the first GI Joe movie. You know running through paris ect.

Funny, darth_kong. Except... not really. You obviously don't have a clue as to what you're talking about. And also, almost no one here knows the left-field references you're referring to. Cincinnati Bow-Tie? I and most others here have no idea what that is. You're obviously interested in entertaining yourself, which is great. I'm all for it. Hollywood, Hollywood, Hollywood... What are we going to do with you? Not pleased. Not pleased at all... Still rooting for the director, his work is good. The cast too. But this industry is full of so many jerks (yes, that means I also work in it speaking from experience, blah blah, I'm not boasting about it), any original idea can easily be ruined, especially if it's in the mid to high budget range and more hands are in the kitchen. What if this film only had a smaller budget instead of the jugillions thrown at it? Then we'd have a hard R film, take risks, and do something really new. "DREDD 3D" had a $50 million budget but didn't do well mostly due to an uninspired marketing campaign, maybe also a bit on the final product itself depending on your viewpoint (I loved it). Generally people become (in theory) MUCH more creative with more limitations, like lack of money. The writing, vision, focus all become tighter and more concentrated. Seems the more money you have, the lazier you get.

Virtually every remake made is filmed in the T.O and virtually all of them suck donkey balls. Search your hearts, you know this to be true. Everyone in Canada from outside the greater Toronto area knows this. Fantastic Four (both crapfests), The Resident Evil series (technically not a remake but still....), Incredible Hulk.... and the list goes on. If you really want to save money by filming in Canada, then stick to either Montreal or Vancouver. They still do movies right in those cities.

I'm sick of hearing: "It's a MODERN take on the suit". Yeah, it's modern. And probably what a realistic and practical robocop would look like. It's also boring as hell. Boring. As. Hell. Modern design is so homogenized and dull. And it's that way with everything now. Cars are a good example of this. Here is a picture of a 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood: http://autoappraisalsbyalan.com/1958%20Cadillac%20Sixty%20Special.jpg It's beautiful. It's unique. It's a classic. Here is a picture of the newest Cadillac Sedan: http://www.bebo.com/new-cars/car-images/2011-cadillac-cts-sedan-sedan-1.jpg It's typical. It's boring. It's dull. It looks like the previous ten years of Cadillac Sedans, and worse, it looks like the next 50 years of Cadillac Sedans. The original Robocop design is instantly recognizable and iconic. Rob Bottin did something fascinating and memorable. And Peter Weller brought the suit to life in an incredible way. NOTHING looks like the classic Robocop. EVERYTHING looks like the remake Robocop.
-

@one9deuce Agree. Worst of all, it's a pastiche of very recent stuff.
by Dingbatty
-
The suit looks like a mash-up of Iron Man and a preliminary design for something out of G.I Joe: Looks putrid, to say the least. Although the bottom half sems to resemble the classic armour. Another pointless remake of an original that set presedence for science fiction, and excessive viloence in the 80's; which of course led to Verhoeven's own "Total Recall". Hopefully this whole craze of revisiting films of yesteryear and glossing them over with a new brush will eventually be transient, because it sure as hell didn't do the recent "Recall" remake any favors - just gave it a bloody nose.
-
Maybe they'll have a scene where the blatantly obvious would happen, and on Robocop's first encounter with someone with a gun and half decent accuracy would find himself minus the right hand and with a big hole in his face, thus causing OCP to tweak the design with something less stupid.

....personally i think its because robocop was a once in a lifetime kinda thing- Lighting in a bottle. A combination of timing and talent and subject matter that could only happen once and cant really be succsessfully replicated . Notice how every robocop sequel that lacked the satirical bite , dark humour and heart of the orignal, fucking sucked? Yeah me too. Take away the unique mix of big buissiness satire, jet black humour and inventive ultraviolence from a robocop movie and it aint robocop no more- just a shitty action movie featuring a guy in an uncomfortable looking costume , which is what this movie will be and why it really shouldnt have been remade . Also, fucking hell that new robocop armour looks stupid. He looks like the kind of no name bad guy you'd kill in the first half hour of a typical first person shooter . Fuck this shit.

Awful suit might be ok if this keeps the satirical elements...
by Badger999
The original movie had a fairly strong sense of satire. *If* they're going to go for that tone in the remake, and they're going to satirize what's become the standard-issue action movie, then this might work. Maybe. That's the only way I can see this working out well... the suit is awful on its own - if we're supposed to take it seriously. But in the right context, maybe it can work.

Also, I'm betting that the exposed right hand is so that he can fire a gun. There's no way he could use his left hand to fire anything less than a Gatling gun.
