What could have been... 2005 Scrapped Jurassic Park 4 Concept Art?

Published at: Oct. 10, 2012, 12:37 a.m. CST by Muldoon

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with what's hitting the interwebs as concept art to the William Monahan and John Sayles script for JP4. I'm not going to lie... seeing these kills me a tad for different reasons. Clearly as your pal "Muldoon" here at AICN, JURASSIC PARK holds an insanely big place in my heart. Seeing JURASSIC PARK, then immediately reading Crichton's THE LOST WORLD (followed by CONGO and SPHERE and EATERS OF THE DEAD, etc...)  is what got me out of special ed and into "gifted and talented" programs and eventually got me working in the movie business as well. (Make as many jokes as you need to, but it's 100% true). I love JP so much, that as a 14 year old - I snuck into the Hollywood premiere of JURASSIC PARK 3 while on vacation and got to meet a ton of my heroes. That day still has yet to be beat, but with these pics... I can't help but be torn.

On one hand, "Holy hell yes!! Another JURASSIC PARK!!!" and on the other "What the hell is this?" Monahan and Sayles both apparently had the script somewhat awesome according to our old pal Moriarty when he got his lucky eyes on it.

I'm so insanely hopeful that Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver can pen something magical that the studio simply can't pass on. I was in the audience at the BOURNE LEGACY screening in Austin when Harry asked Frank Marshall directly what the deal was with JP4 and when I heard "In the next two years," bam - sweet music to my dinosaur loving ears. I can't express enough how exciting it is to think we really might just get another JURASSIC PARK, but in the mean time here's a few supposed concept art pics from ILM for the scrapped JP4 so many years ago.

(If it turns out these are from some video game or different movie - my apologies - I'm just that hungry for JP info. and there seems to be some meat to these. Thanks, demoncarnotaur!)

Check out a bunch of the pics HERE.

Again, take these with a grain of salt - remember all the pics from the supposed CLOVERFIELD monster... But I think they're cool, just not all that JURASSIC PARK-y to me. What do you fine folks think?

Love love love Jurassic Park. This would've been a tragedy.

Interesting artwork. It would be cool if it wasn't for Jurassic Park IV. I'm glad that iteration of the project died.

Those don't look anything like the script I read in 2004

    by D.Vader

In that script, there was NO T-Rex whatsoever (which was a *massive* disappointment) and the Velociraptor was the only species to have human DNA added to its development. And that development resulted in raptors with increased intelligence and communication skills and *five* fingers on each hand instead of 3. But the descriptions didn't say anything about decreased snouts and human looking faces (which I don't like). Well, I take that back. I like the second "raptor" pic (third down) better than the first. But human Triceratops and T-Rex? Dunno where that came from. Honestly, the script I read felt like fan-fiction and not like a real movie. I'd rather see more stories about dinosaurs in the "wild" or terrorizing modern day people than see them turned into horrible science projects gone wrong. And that's not to say that a good movie couldn't be made from such a premise, but its not exactly the Jurassic Park story I'd like to see.

    These are real

    by demoncarnotaur

Reddit got the pics from my post on Neogaf. I obviously am not the original source of all the pictures, but I did find the sculpt and ILM render pic. Anyways, I know they are real as Carlos Huante confirmed that his art was indeed for JP4 (In fact, the images shared in his galley online are listed as 'JP4') The ILM render is based off of his work and fits the time scale perfectly.. I found it via google image search under related images. From what I gather, the render or the sculpt was done by Andrew Cawrse, and was posted by him in 2009 for his Anatomy guide.. Only he never mentioned what it was from so it sat undiscovered for a while. Odds are there are other pics floating around out there that people don't even know about. (But if you know about em, share em!) I wish I had more details, but I'm hoping now that this went viral that places like AICN can dig em up.. maybe interview the artists? I'm glad this movie wasn't made under the JP name, but the art is great and the premise would make a crazy new franchise.

Fundamental Misunderstanding of JP yet again

    by HELLSFOXES

Same with JP3 and to lesser extent 2. They think we want to see these dino's evolve in cool new ways. But it's completely pointless. They miss what everyone loved about the first. It was fucking scary. We don't need new model toys. If you see a raptor you should be dead. Or clawing for life. Not have a little kid jump around like a cunt scaring them off with birdcalls while you give the raptors cool new haircuts. Evolution of visual design only works if you stay true to the tone. Dark, shockingly real, initial awe, fucking scary.

I'm glad this didn't happen. Here's hoping for a Jurassic Park movie that fits nicely with the first one. I kind of like the idea that they used for the Jurassic Park video game where the story follows some chick hired by BioSyn to recover the shaving cream container holding the embryos from Nedry and gets stuck on the island at the same time as the original disaster.

    Crash And Burn

    by Delta5Qmp

They had Mark 'Crash' McCreery once. Now they have this. Whenever Hollywood gets its hands on something amazing, they throw it away. That guy inspired me as much as Barlowe or Giger, he was a rockstar among creature designers, his spotlight in Cinefex was among the most inspiring things I ever read. I even tried stopping by Stan Winston Studio because of it. Times change and I was turned away on the street without getting to show a single thing. Seeing these, I don't even feel bad about that day anymore. If this is where they're going, I just don't feel left out. It's like finding out the hot chick you had a crush on in high school is now a 400 pound crack addict who's losing her 5th baby to child services.

    design

    by Vince

These have been on the Carlos huante site for years, makes them authentic jp4 designs, but thank the lord that it wasn't made- they are great designs, for a computer game, but a movie using these would be so B, it would cheapen the jp world. Evolved or genetically altered dinos is a great idea but not human hybrids. I want to see new species of dinos, ones that simply had'nt been discovered yet, there must be lots of those. Opens the gates from some fantastic new dinosaur species designs. Ceratopsians with new horn configuration, carnivores with spectacular head crests, feathers done properly, as insulation covering, not just a few head spines. Many options to explore.

  • There's no question that Jurassic Park, and Michael Crichton, along with my family (the family is full of geologists and paleontology buffs) shaped the course of my life. It is the reason I became a geology major (paleontology is a focus of mine, but it's not really a realistic career choice given the availability of jobs...either way, they are intimately related)...it is the reason I ended up working for a summer a while back under Dr. Jack Horner (any Jurassic buffs should know that name - he's the man Dr. Grant was based on and the paleo consultant for the films, as well as one of the top minds in the field for the last 30 years) ... and it is the reason I have been as singularly focused in terms of life goals. I'd been obsessed with dinosaurs, of course, even before the film was released - announcing my intent to become a paleontologist when I was 3...but it did have a massive, massive influence (not to mention on the way I saw films from then on). That said...I've probably seen the film nigh on 200 times (I used to watch it a few times a month for the first several years after the film was released). I've read the book god knows how many times. I'm one of the biggest JP fans out there. And I would rather tear my own eyes out than watch THAT...if it was actual concept art. Which I rather doubt. I mean...who'd ever think THAT was a good ide.....oh wait. flashback time. JPIII happened. Oops. Almost forgot. I guess they WOULD do that. >.> Let's jut pray....with all our little dino loving hearts....that nothing so vile is even thought of in the same breath as JPIV. Now, I do not expect JPIV to be a masterpiece. Odds are against it. It certainly isn't going to beat the first film as an experience (nothing will - that movie changed MOVIES in general)...but it has a fairly decent chance of at least being better than III (the bar wasn't raised very high on that one). My biggest fear is that they will piss all over the legacy Crichton left us. Crichton never intended Jurassic Park to be a series. Even The Lost World was only written because he felt pressured/obligated to (and, I think, in part as a favor to dear old Spielberg). Given that, it simply is not structured as a story that can go on for that long. At the core, it is a story about the arrogance of man, tampering with nature, and playing with technology he doesnt fully understand or respect. I think film makers forget that, and see it only as a cash cow...an excuse to get 4 or 5 people chased by dinos for 90 minutes. That's why III failed so miserably. It was a monster movie - JP was a science thriller. What really irks me...is the thought that, inevitably, some flaming imbecile will say "hey, let's remake Jurassic Park! We'll make it new and cool and gritty!"....and I hope a large, heavy fossil falls off of a display in a museum and kills whoever thinks it up. First man killed by a dinosaur. The irony.

Thanks for finding these pics. Jurassic Park is my favourite film, and I'm always interested to see anything connected to it. I share your opinion: cool concepts, but perhaps not fit for this particular dinosaur film series. And, off-topic; very cool that you've worked with Rodriguez! He's been a big hero of mine since I got Once Upon a Time in Mexico on DVD in 2003. His work method is a huge inspiration.

And as for the concept art, while I admire the talent, the idea of turning Jurassic park into some kind of mutant horror movie is off-putting. To me, these ideas belong in a FarCry film and not in the JP franchise.

Are these supposed to be the hybrid dino-commandos

    by lv_426

First one looks like a vampire type creature out of something like Blade or Underworld. Second one kinda evokes the old B-movie stop motion dinosaur design style. Third one looks like an alien of some sort. Last one seems like something out of a fantasy or fairy tale. Seems more like something that would fit into Lord of the Rings or some creature Conan the Barbarian would run into.

  • As I always say, if you weren't there for the first run of the holiest of holy trilogies, your opinion on geek matters don't mean shit. Jurassic Park was the beginning of the end for classic summer blockbusters - the genre's death-knell. The last watchable Speilberg work. Everything since has been contemptible, vapid hackwork.

Jurassic Park is similar to Jaws in that it's a one time deal. The thrill is in the great set up, the build up and the awe inspiring reveal. And once it's done, that's it. There's no more story...you can't re-build up and re-reveal. When sequels add arbitrary situations on to the concept it just becomes laughable...Jaws with Teens, Jaws 3-D in a park, Jaws in fucking Barbados or wherever the fuck it was...Jaws on ice? pointless. Why not Jurassic Dino Detectives? Mutt Williams and the Jurassic Park of Doom? Mutant Dino's versus commando's in a haunted house? sure...but it doesn't need the 'JP' on front of it. Fuck the Hacks.

That said, considering how nearly all the pictures are of more humanoid-appearing dinos, the explanation of what the hell led to them all probably would be suitable for a horror movie as well and not a standard JP film.

    New IP, not JP

    by BartReviews

The concept here is cool and the market is ripe for it (see Godzilla and Pacific Rim), but I agree with an earlier poster that people want terrifying dinosaurs in a JP movie, not crazy evolutions and permutations. This concept would work better as its own intellectual property, maybe with a "Weyland-Tyrell"-style connection/crossover with the JP universe.

Cool, but not in the JP universe, please

Blew the chance for the REAL sequel.

    by RobRed1

The BOOK ends with the dinos making it to the mainland of South America and disappearing into the jungle. Where there are plenty of wild beans to meet their lisome needs. Genie out of the bottle. No chance at all of controlling them. The sequel SHOULD have been following on that. People in South America now on the prey list. Big dinos running free. Like the problems Africans are having with elephant herds, only 1,000 times worse. Instead, Chricton based the sequel Lost World on the MOVIE ending and had to put the whole story on another island. Chrichton's work went downhill after he went Hollywood.

This isn't exactly a sequel to JP, but it shares the same DNA.

    MULDOON!

    by ReefShark

You sir, do indeed "rock." You have a loyal following here at AICN. Don't respond to the trolls...it only fuels them. I've followed the Saturday Shorts since week 1 and have to say it is something I look forward to each Saturday. Keep up the good work...

  • And all you are left with is a marketing committee's foul demon-spawn.

Likewise. I would kill to read the script. It just seems so bizarre yet entertaining. I'm glad JP didn't turn into that, but it still sounds really interesting as a standalone idea.. While it may sound like a 12 years olds made up story, the art sold me on it a bit more. Just.. not for JP. ---- I still am hoping someone will interview the artists and get some more information, and possibly pictures.

We want to see "real" dinos in new situations...

    by olivehead

...not something more appropriate to Dr. Moreau or, Heaven help us, Alien: Resurrection. The whole concept of combining human and dino elements is just to creepy for Jurassic Park, IMHO.

  • Oct. 10, 2012, 3:27 p.m. CST

I would have loved to see a JURASSIC PARK sequel that...

    by Chris Moody

...meandered into the "others" who were trying to smuggle out dinosaur DNA during the original JURASSIC PARK film. Remember: "Dennis" (Wayne "Newman!" Knight) was selling some of that dino-DNA to a mysterious corporate rival from "BioSyn." In the book, "BioSyn" didn't just want to clone dinosaurs. Rather, they were interested in cross-species cloning for mysterious lab applications. In the second book ("THE LOST WORLD"), BioSyn sends a team to steal dinosaur eggs from the second island. However, the team is quickly killed. This mysterious cloning goal would make for a very interesting sequel.

    BIG DISASTER

    by 420 Boylston St

This would have been the nail in Joe Johnston's career and the end of the franchise. These concepts are nothing in the vain of JP. I truly believe Steven Spielberg was the wrong director to ever handled JP, because every sequel then on has been subpar and just out of context to Critchton's brilliant concept. Where the fuck they UNIVERSAL was going to go with this cluster fuck of story or better yet the next one???

    someone here once said...

    by Richard

They should make a tv show that is basically a "prequel" to the first film. The corporate and scientific aspect dealing with ingen vs biosyn, etc. I honestly think this is the best direction they could take the JP franchise at this point without being redundant.

  • Not from the Jurassic period, but something different than just doing more of the same dinos.

    by Batmangelo

They kinda did that with the jp video game that was released fairly recently

Seeing them become smarter and more humanlike trying to get off the island someone recieving an urgent emergency message for a rescue and it being the raptors who sent it dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnn lol

If you are still here and don't mind me asking.. How did you get a chance to read the JP4 script, and when did that happen? Was what you read an earlier or later draft than what was reviewed on this site so many years ago?
