Your meteor brought something all right, but if it’s a Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day, it’s the biggest son of a bitch you’ve ever seen!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
For some reason I’ve had a real hankering to rewatch Chuck Russell’s remake of The Blob recently. I think I may scratch that itch tonight, but in the meantime how about a little behind the scenes of that film?
I’m a big fan of Russell’s ‘80s horror collaborations with young Frank Darabont. They had a great one-two punch with Nightmare 3 and The Blob. The latter in particular is a surprisingly inventive, effects-porn revisit to the ‘50s sci-fi classic. I consistently bring up The Blob when conversation turns towards Carpenter’s The Thing (and it’s no coincidence that The Thing was yesterday’s BTS pic, by the way) as another hard-left turn into horror when updating vintage sci-fi. This movie is brutal and you can see evidence of that in today’s pic.
Here you have make up supervisor Tony Gardner touching up stuntman Bobby Porter as one of the Blob’s victims (in this case, a kid… remember back in the day when kids could be offed by monsters in horror movies?).
Thanks to Dimitar Dimitrov and the Practical Effects Group. Click to (slightly) enlargen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
Tomorrow’s pic sees a birthday on a classic Universal moster movie set.

If nothing else, the demise of the resident smarmy teen horndog in this movie never gets old.
by Bill C.
Lord knows it's one of the few things that really stuck in my head about it, it and the theater scene (okay, and "I think you pissed it off").

I remember the kid's death really bothering me back in the day...
by DrBathroomMD
Awesome movie. the 80s were a great time for horror remakes that REALLY worked (The Thing, The Blob, and The Fly).
-
I found the original tremendously scary when I was a kid, and the remake even more so, though I read the novelization before seeing it, and the book was pretty damn frightening for an 8-year-old. The remake holds up, but I'd love to see what Darabont would do with it as director (not just writer), and with a little more money behind it. Read somewhere recently that Joss Whedon credits Shawnee Smith in the remake as being one of his chief inspirations in creating Buffy Summers and his myriad other heroines. Also, a great riff on "The Blob" is Dean Koontz's "Phantoms." Yeah, the movie fucking sucked, but it was one of the scariest books I ever read. Right up there with "Pet Sematary" and "The Silence of the Lambs," in my opinion.

Son of Frankenstein? Just wondering.....
-
This movie is terrifying in its brutality and the blob creature is fucking scary. The movie was great for killing the characters off you wouldn't expect, like the Johnny Quarterback good guy and the kid. Kids don't die in horror movies nowadays and they really didn't die much then either. It's always good to see movie that doesn't pull its punches.
-
This is a very underrated 1980s horror movie.
-
Have you people not seen the Feast movies?? Talk about disturbing to watch.
-
And the special effects hold up BEAUTIFULLY. I can't imagine it being done better with CGI.
-
Saw it before most of the horror movies I enjoy (Evil Dead's, Thing, Shining) and I remember the kitchen sink scene fucking with young fragile little mind. I was never the same after wards... I also remember Horace (I think) from Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman getting killed at the theaters.

I love this remake, used to re-read the FANGORIA stuff about it all the time. I watched the original for the first time last week. Great theme song!.. but the dated aspects are so dated and bad that it's just not a great watch
by Autodidact
I was able to appreciate and enjoy the original. However given the choice going forward I'd pretty much always choose to watch the remake.
-
But like many, the special effects are what really stuck with me. The final confrontation in the town square was especially awe-inspiring. Oh, and the less said about Kevin Dillon's haircut, the better.

The two best things about The Blob remake were on Shawnee Smith's upper body.

Damn, she is still smokin' hot.

Is it me, or does the BSPOTD look different than the end result?
by Monroville
The kid in the movie almost looks like molten wax, where the make-up on the kid above looks like burns. I've heard there are 2 different edits of THE BLOB remake, with this scene in particular being slightly different (which could explain the different make-up)... unless the waxy goo was applied over top the make-up we see above.

While I wouldn't put The Blob remake on par with Carpenter's The Thing or Cronenberg's The Fly
by lv_426
The Blob from the 80's was a fun horror flick. It is also kinda funny seeing young Johnny Drama fighting a giant gelatinous mass of pink alien jello. I'm kinda surprised we haven't seen another Blob in recent times. It seems like the kind of B-horror flick that would work as a crazy gory 3D movie. It'd be perfect for Halloween season, and better than yet another Saw or Paranormal Activity found footage horror film.
-
Discuss.
-
I think the Blob wins this round on account of Cosby thinking it is some pink Jello and trying to eat it.
-
Long live the new blob-flesh.
-
DiCaprio in the lead, De Niro as the blob.

That would be cool if the blob turned out tobe the black goo from prometheus, then Ridley could make another side-qual

Shawnee Smith indeed... love her. Anyways, yeah, the kid dying really got to me.
by Fawst
Of course, I was a kid, too. And I was totally sneaking a viewing of a movie I wouldn't have been given a green light to watch. I think the thing that got me the most was the thought that the other kid would have to explain what happened to his friend and how rough that would be. I was an overly emotional kid. For all I know, I'm probably lightly autistic. Anyways, great pic! I had no idea Darabont was involved with this. And yes, this absolutely deserves to be mentioned in the same discussion of great remakes as The Thing an The Fly. What a great triple-bill those would be. The The's.
-
Been a big fan of hers since the beginning...and love how she's the singer of a rock band (Fidolaho)...she was the best thing in The Stand mini-series (next to Tom Cullen...Shawnee is pretty! pretty is spelled M-O-O-N). And The Blob remake is just fantastic. Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), the ever-beautiful Shawnee Smith, Downtown Willie Brown (Joe Seneca)...great effects, brutal endings for otherwise nice people giving us our lost old school rated R horror where anybody could be killed (oh how we miss thee, our beloved rated R horror with no pretense of anybody getting out alive for any reason outside of luck).
-
Bouncy Blob!
-
And since I've finally upgraded to big-screen, I should make this my upcoming Halloween flick as well.
