Massawyrm is all SINISTER in the BASEMENT on this week's AIN'T IT COOL with Harry Knowles
Hey folks, Harry here... I have to say I'm proud as hell of Massawyrm, SINISTER isn't the Boo Factory it seems to be for a lot of folks, but the film I saw was actually better than that. This film has strong writing (weird I know) and fantastic performances from the cast and a high degree of creep. In many ways I find it to be less HORROR and more of a mystery that has supernatural truths. And I like that. BUT - this show was before I saw SINISTER, but Massawyrm enjoyed toying with me in the Basement... here ya go...

Why did McWeeny fire Massa? I never did understand what happened there.

I'm very happy for Carlyle, he's a guy who spends all his time on what he loves.

Horror mystery? Would you compare it to Ringu/The Ring Harry?

Oopd, watched after I posted that comment. Clearly there is The Ring DNA
by FreeBeer

because all Horror begins and ends with Ringu...

Also, could we get a review of the book? Perhaps in the comics review section?

wormcheck...can tell if you're being sarcastic, but one of the more famous horror/mystery combination films is Ringu...
by FreeBeer
...The fact that I mentioned Ringu before watching the video, and it popped up in the video, kind of proves it.
-
I miss that guy
-
Did not know that. What's the story there?
-
Massawyrm was one of my favorite writers on this site. In my opinion, he embodied what this website was all about, and his reviews were damn well written. I knew he was working on some cool projects & didn't submit reviews regularly, but what the hell did the guy do to get fired?
-
Obviously Amazon doesn't require timely DVD/Blu Ray columns.

Harry, why so dismissive and negative with your bud?
by popculturesymphony
Harry, I imagine you mean to affectionately rib your good pal, but it just feels like,at every turn here, you are putting a negative spin on your friends remarkable achievements. He wrote a movie that was actually made, stars an excellent cast, and is garnering really positive buzz. He wrote a book that is being published, and a second yarn that publishers asked for based on the quality of the first. Yet, you Eeyore your way through the interview, balking that somehow ratings define the quality of scares, that being paid for excellent work somehow suggest selling out, and indifferent about reading it. Why sully his achievement when you should be celebrating it? Is this jealousy? Congratulations, Massawyrm! Best to you and your future projects!
-
Oct. 4, 2012, 3:05 p.m. CST
popculturesymphony, yeah, what was up with that? Especially when he basically said I have no interest in reading your book..
by FreeBeer
...And when he smirks and says "I dunno it just seems..." after he says he has written a sequel, implying he's a sell out or something. Jealousy?

Didn't dig this episode. It was free promotion for your buddy's film
by Logan_1973
Weak content.
-
The best reviewer on the site by far. Even if it's only a monthly review.
-
don't really like horror films but might have to heck this out. the book sounds kinda cool though
-
1) Massawyrm got FIRED by Moriarty? WTH. STORY! Masswyrm get too close to Mrs. Moriarty? Toshiro IS Drew's kid.. right? Lol.. This requires much elaboration! 2) Reviewers, and article writers, do in fact get paid. This is a job for them. Thats the first time in the history of this site that the actual corporate structure of the site was revealed.
-
Trying to take credit for his horror film education, not reading your buddies book, questioning the quality of his fiction writing even though you haven't even read his work. Lame.
-
...People ACTUALLY GET PAID to submit the scibblings termed *reviews* for this site?!? Holy shit!!! But then, Fat Harry has become rich from the ungrammatical brain farts he deposits here a couple times per week as well. Only in America, huh?
-
His reviews were always so spot on.
-
Forgive me for asking, please explain...
-
Of course you would love this movie...if you give studio execs blowjobs for movie memorabilia. Of course you'd go crazy for a movie YOUR FRIEND MADE! From the guy who gushed all over "The Dark Knight" despite narrative flaws and different takes on character arcs... Then gave "The Dark Knight Rises" a negative review for narrative flaws and different takes on character arcs. How can you be made Harry, when Two-Face gets burned by fire rather than burned by acid and The Joker never falls into a vat of chemicals...Yet its blasphemy that Bane wasn't from the Carribbean nor is Spanish???
-
I laughed very hard at your post...spot on
-
How full of shit Drew Moriarty McWeeny really was, not the second coming of christ this site likes to say he was
-

Please tell us why Massa was fired - please !
by qwsdqwedq sdbcjhdwiuvdh
surely u can tell us
-
Harry never calls him by name.
-
http://images.aintitcool.com/node/13541 This was the story where it happened. As I recall, Massa got caught talking shit about Drew at the Austin Film festival by some of Drew's friends that were there. This all happened right after the whole JJ Abrams Superman review debacle. So Drew was pissed at Harry, and when this happened, Drew took it out on Massa, who was Harry's buddy. Harry let it stand because Drew was on the verge of quitting. Harry got Massa a job at his brother-in-law's video store, the dearly departed Pedazo Chunk in Austin. That is the story, at lease as it circulated back in 2002.
-
I really enjoyed his reviews, and always thought his opinions mostly reflected my owm about various films. Also miss his reviews of tabletop games. It was one of the few things I looked forward to seeing on here on a regular basis.
-

Yeah I always find myself defending Harry since we all enjoy his site but he's a definite asshole here
by heyoucantlaughatthat
Wow that's awfully ambitious for you
-
Massawyrm was always one of my favorite contributors, good to see him make a visit to the basement. He also gave me advice on Reddit once about uploading a book thing I wrote when I was a kid. Made my day. Also, I saw Harry at Hopdoddy off Anderson a few weeks back. We were both waiting in line together but I didn't want bother the guy when he's just waiting to eat a burger. Half wish I would have approached you Harry. I've been reading your site since I was 12. You and your site have been a pretty big deal in my life. Anyway, that's what I would have liked to say man. You should talk to Massawyrm about doing a reddit AMA sometime
-
Only half of that is true. I'd never heard the part about Harry getting me a job at Pedazo Chunk. That made me laugh out loud. Definitely never happened.

Just saw the movie, Mr. Carlyle - quite good. I look forward to checking out your book.

I didn't even know if the rest of that shit was true. I remember you having picks at Pedazo, maybe that's where that idea came from.

massawyrm 1 , Congrats on this film. I havend't heard a bad thing about it.
by Nichole
Proud of you.
-
You have accomplished a lot. I hope you are happy :) You should be.
-
Not OF you. Either way.
-
All that drama with the bitching and the 2 faces or whatever the Christ happened years ago. How did it get resolved? For clearly there have been dozens upon dozens of reviews posted by himself since then. Also, heading to see this thing in London this evenin. Better scare the pish out of me. I been waitin for this for a long time.

It's 4 days old and it's been that way for weeks dude. Maintenance!

Massa, I worked with the DP for Sinister on another project recently
by D.Vader
He had nothing but good things to say about you and the movie. I said "Hey was this the movie written by that guy in Texas? The one who wrote for a movie website?" He was like "Cargill? Yeah do you know him? Are you from Texas?" "No, I just read that website he wrote for all the time." "Ah. He came to the set every now and then. Good guy."
-
always enjoyed your writing on this site and then loved listening to you on Spill.com when you were a regular. Couldn't be more happy for you and it is great hearing how much good buzz is going around this movie. You must be very excited to be a part of this. The book sounds cool too. Obviously, I don't know your friendship with Harry, but he definitely comes off as a total douche in this interview, like he can't be happy for you. If that's the case, don't worry, a lot of us are happy for you
-
By you, I mean whoever he is interviewing at any given time. The guy's better looking puppet is better than you, too. Harry left something in your toilet. He wants you to review it and get back to him once you're more enlightened regarding what he thinks of you, person-he-is-interviewing. PEON.

And super proud of you Massa. I'll give the movie a watch at least.
by BlueSkittle
Always thought your viewpoint and writing style came from a somewhat pretentious place, and writing a movie about a writer who watches movies is a bit...familiar, but I'll give it a watch before passing judgement.
-

I don't understand, Massa supposedly was fired years ago...
by quicksilver80
But I kept reading his reviews right here until recently...there must be a glitch on the Matrix or something
-
Did From Dusk Till Dawn eventually bring in other supernatural creatures I'm not aware of?
-
But posted top 10 lists for 2009 and beyond? Let alone write a review for The Book of Eli?
-
changes his screename from "Headgeek" to "little cheese shit"
-
Hey good luck with the film, i alwas found our writing on this site to be top notch and found your sensibilities to be exactly what this site needed, you are missed here but it looks like you went on to better things, looking forward to seeing the movie and picking up the book...live the dream buddy
-
Always loved your reviews!!! And I was especially proud of your negative review on spill that trashed THE MIST for being the steaming pile that it truly is...one of my favorite S.K. stories that I thought just sucked on the big screen. Can't wait to see SINISTER next week!

what if i tell you hayden panettiere wants to visit your basement harry?
by julia
yeah i know. she wouldn't be seen again.
-
What if you show us your face?
-
and it was like I saw the movie already. Maybe I'm jaded, but having a shadowy person suddenly appear behind the person you are looking at, after the camera's been swinging around a bit, just doesn't scare me.
-
Jeez Harry, you can't even play nice with your friend? You come off as a huge and egotistical douche in this episode.
-
Oct. 5, 2012, 10:43 p.m. CST
Harry, do you shave your brows? Or do you just not have any?
by wcolbert
Not that I'm one to talk - my eyebrows are ridiculously dark for having light brown hair- they're nigh on black for some reason. Not that it matters. I just noticed for the first time that you dont really have visible eyebrows! :P
-
They are translucent blonde - and always have been. It's the same color the moustache grows in. DRIVES ME INSANE.
-
Wish he was still writing for the site. Last thing I remember him him writing here was a review for the movie Magic Trip, which I had to seek out.
-

Is a Massawyrm a dragon from Tuscany, or a dragon plantation owner?
by Bedknobs and Boomsticks
-
Phew, almost answered questions about serious allegations of jealousy and twat-like behavior. Crisis averted.
-
I don't know whether or not Massa was setting out to create a standard horror flick. But Sinister is just that. I like the idea behind it, but how the story unfolds is similar to any other horror tale. I just thought that once he got the chance to step around the critics desk and put the money where his mouth is, that he would come out with something much more innovative.

Good luck this weekend, Massa. Hope your movie makes everyone forget there's even a PA movie coming out next week.
by SergeantStedenko

First off, congrats to Massawyrm on getting a script made into a movie. A very good movie actually, and this is coming from a guy who really isnt the biggest horror movie nut in the world. Sinister might be the best horror movie I have seen since The Descent. Great build up, creepy vibe throughout, and "The Lawnmower Murder" still disturbs me to think about. If I had one nitpick, it would be the slight letdown of an ending. I new it was going to happen, but the suspense and the scare factor could have been slightly better, which is probably the fault of the director in this case. But a great horror flick for the most part. The packed theater I saw it with enjoyed the hell out of it! Congrats Massa, this was a fantastic story you told, and the cast and crew of this movie pulled it off nicely. This might be the #1 movie at the box-office this weekend.
-
The wife might as well have not even been in this movie. What female moves to a new town with absolutely no interest in where she is moving, and in the duration of 2-3 days settling in doesn’t encounter one busybody in the neighborhood who asks which house she’s moved into? AND There’s no mention about getting rid of the half cut tree limb in the backyard. Why is it still there? WHY?! It's right out the kitchen window and sliding glass door just sitting there and nobody says nothing, ever. Even the realtor didn’t think “Maybe I should at least get rid of this murder branch before I try and sell this shitshow murder house”. There are SOOO many bad logic moments in this movie. The killer kids aren't scary either. The ending was terrible, 3 minutes too long. The final "scare" of the movie just shows that they knew they had lost whatever momentum they 'thought' they had, and needed to bring back the scary face from the commercials. I respect someone trying to inject some originality into the horror genre with a new character (bughul) but he is sooooooo fucking weak. Killing kids, killing familes is truly horrifying, so good call on that stuff. Making kids “kill” for you? Kids might be fine for horror movies where they use their minds to kill but they are ineffective and ridiculous as axe weilding maniacs. The ending diffuses the mildest fear the audience might have for bughul who is reduced a hiccup cure in final "scare".
-
Hey Massa, how does it feel now that your precious 4E Dungeons and Dragons is dead and buried? Must stick in your craw. The game system was even shittier than the articles you wrote about it, somehow.
