Nicolas Cage Goes Full Caveman In The Trailer For THE CROODS!!
The Kidd here...
There is plenty of beauty to behold in the new trailer for the latest film from DreamWorks Animation, THE CROODS. However, I've got to say that the second I heard Nicolas Cage's voice here, I mentally checked out a bit. There's just something about Cage that doesn't scream overprotective caveman father to me, and, when it comes to animation, if the voice work is distracting me with whose recognizable voice is filling the role, it's tough for me to recover. That's always been my beef with DreamWorks Animation... they tend to go for the bigger star than the right voice.
We'll see if that winds up being the case with THE CROODS come this March.

I dunno, I've respected Dreamworks a lot more lately, so we'll see how this turns out.
-
is this the DreamWorks from the mirror image?

Really, that pulls you out of the movie? How about the cavemen watching fireworks?
-
just doesn't work. "She listened to her FAWther..."
-
Cage is almost a like a caveman now.
-
I agree that the Nic Cage voice is a bit jarring, but only because it is so distinctive. Otherwise this could be a fun animated flick. I like the concept anyways. I say the best movie about the origins and early era of mankind is still Quest For Fire.
-
am I too old? I must be. I love animation, but i hate sentimental bullshit.
-
That bugged me also

For a minute I thought Cage was doing a Captain Caveman movie.
by kindofabigdeal
You know he would.

Not to mention Nick Cage.

When you hear the voices that guys like Billy West can do, it makes the "Stars" they pick for these films sound like half-stoned morons.
by AlienFanatic
I'm so tired of animation studios going for big names instead of really excellent voice acting. Sometimes it works, as in when PIXAR uses guys like Ed Asner and women like Ellen DeGeneres, but I miss the days when guys like Mel Blanc were the norm.
-
Actually, Cage's voice makes it unintentionally hilarious! Like most of his roles. Also, I'd take Dreamworks over Pixar any day. Pixar is going too Disney-schmaltzy!

This trailer just reminds me how 'Dreamworksy' the faces were in Brave.

I coulda enjoyed it as claymation.

Cage's voice is too distinct to fit into that caveman.

Reminds me of an 80's adventure movie like Honey I Shrunk The Kids or Goonies for some reason...

...And if this started as Aardman this could be good

I have seen it.
-
Looks awful and tiresome. Gee, kids, be sure to pursue adventure because your parents are well-meaning but just plain wrong. Especially if you are a spunky red-headed girl named Eve(nudge-nudge, wink-wink)! Tangled, Brave, Up, same fucking story time after time. YAWN. And on what planet did primitive man interact with an environment remotely like that? Happy to admit my ignorance but I don't recollect the fossil record showing much of an idyll. More like, try not to get eaten today so you can make wufta fufta tonight and whelp out a bunch of offspring before something kills you. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Unless, of course, they show Jesus on a dinosaur. Then I'm fucking all in.
-
Cavemen, dinosaurs, sabertooths, mammoths - that's great source material. I wish hollywood would pull their heads from their butts and do it right.
-
I'll spend my dollar since Pixar isn't giving us anything!
-
Cant' do it, guys, this doesn't look like something I'd ever watch. Shame, because there needs to be other games in town.
-
That's an extremely unfair comment. I'm no huge fan of most of Dreamworks films but they did manage to pull it off with Shrek (first one ONLY), Kung Fu Panda (first one ONLY), How to Train Your Dragon. I love Pixar, but Cars and then Cars 2, really?
-
Who cares if Nick Cages doesn't fit your idea of what a caveman should sound like? Maybe he isn't the stereotypical "overprotective caveman father" in this film...have you seen it? Also i'm guessing that this film is aimed towards children, and most children don't know who Nick Cage is. Stop thinking about yourself and attaching negativity to something that you have no idea what it is yet.
-
What a bunch of characters.
-
This is one of the best trailers I've seen for an animated movie in awhile.
-
They always look really poorly done and the stories and characters have the nuance of bad tv shows on ABC and CBS.

I've seen a rough version of the final movie...spoilers
by Redhead_Redemption
The film starts out OK, but once they find the "magic land" (as it's called by the croods) the film becomes pretty weak and the fish out of water plot becomes tired after about 15 minutes. The real kicker for me that ruins the movie is when the family ends up going forward in time and we see them at the bronx zoo getting into all kinds of mischief before the film basically ends with New York adopting the family as the newest zoo exhibit Unless they fix the third act, dreamworks has a dud on their hands..but who knows how box office will turn out

Men are cowards and stupid, but girls are brave and strong and wonderful.
by Raptor Jesus
Why do they keep doing this? 'Bolt' - ending is happy Mom & daughter and dog & cat and the EVIL HUSBAND was kicked out of the house. 'Monsters Vs Aliens', groom is cowardly weakling and heroine kicks him out so she can be with her 'monster' (a thin metaphor, for sure) friends. 'Brave' - boys and clumsy and stupid and useless and the princess has zero need of them. 'I will compete for my own hand!'. Jesus Titty-fucking Christ. Do we not have enough arrogant, narcissistic women in the world? Do we have to train the next generation up to hate men and believe in the 'women are nothing but wonderful' bullshit? Camille Paglia, the famous feminist writer once said, 'if it had been up to women to invent civilization we would still be living in mud huts'. I guess she just grew up before hollywood began its PC indoctrination. Men are stupid, evil, useless. Girls are brave and strong and smart. Got it. OK? I FUCKING GOT IT?

Kind of like Slaughterhouse 5

one part Plato's Allegory of the cave, one part Genesis, one part New Age horseshit. And it all takes place on Pandora.

Seriously, I mean, what the fuck was up with the that Cars bullshit. Owen Wilson? Get the fuck out of here. And a sequel? Are they fucking insane? Now Pixar...those guys can do a sequel. Kung Fu Panda 2 was pitch perfect. I can't believe Dreamworks was stupid enough to try to sell their shitty car sequel in the same weekend as that. ... No, wait...
-
It's nice to see someone else with the brains to see that the pendulum has swung WAY too far and that almost invariably it seems that men in commercials, TV shows, and movies are portrayed as bumbling idiots (unless they're minority men of course) that strong, independent women have to put up with. Indoctrination at its most pernicious. By the way, I have a couple Camille Paglia books and she is a force of nature, man. Tells it like it is.
-
Lilo and Stitch. How to Train Your Dragon. Both were fantastic, as was everything else on his resume that Sanders worked on as a story man, but not director, such as Mulan where he did the screenplay. (He also had a story credit in Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Lion King, but he's a little further down the food chain on those, so its hard to tell how much came from him.) Doesn't matter what commercials the movie throws out, I'm still seeing it opening weekend. And it looks super colorful and full of energy, even if the base plot is super generic princess wants a life of freedom and something more away from her hometown.
-
INSTANTLY after seeing his voice on that character, it didn't work. He's done CGI characters before to much success, The Ant Bully for example. Worked great. Here? It just doesn't work, like AT ALL. I don't know if the characters mannerisms aren't correct or what, it just doesn't work. Also...cavemen on Pandora? I don't get it. I thought for sure they were going to walk out into the modern world a la The Village. Although that would have been cliche as hell, I get the feeling it would have been more entertaining.
-
was the worst voice acting ever.
-
A lot of potential issues. The voices don't fit. Except for Ryan Reynolds, who it took a few minutes on. The obvious comparisons to "Brave." And the story line didn't really seem to be all that good. It's part Brave, part Ice Age, and part Land of the Lost. I have a lot of respect for Chris Sanders, but this one just isn't looking good so far.
-
Nic Cage's attempts to remain relevant in today's film landscape aside, March 2013 release and an issuance of a trailer in October 2012... someone at the studio must be on their knees praying this doesn't bomb them back into the Stone Age.
-
You can say that again! Totally agree.

I'm not saying it looks amazing, but to bash the trailer based on historical accuracy isn't exactly fair. I know another (extremely popular) cartoon series set in prehistoric times that took extreme liberties with historical accuracy.

As long as we're doing an Airing of Grievances. If a post has an obnoxious, gimmicky, and somewhat misleading title, it's tough for me to recover and appreciate the opinion of the writer of said post. That's always been my beef with The Kidd.

Is it too late to get Ron Perlman to come in and re-record the dialogue for the dad?
by OldMC
Come on DW. How do you sleep on Perlman for this gig.
-
How the fuck are you going to eat if you never leave the cave. One corner must reek from a big pile of Nic Cage piss and crap. If you want to see a real caveman movie see well Caveman starring Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid, Barbara Bach, and Shelley Long. I'm dating myself, but I saw it on the big screen. If you want drama, not comedy in a caveman movie check out Quest for Fire. You'll get your Ron Perlman fix there too. Both of these have been recently added to Netflix's instant picks.

It would have been way cooler if they gave the caveman Nic's face. A CGI version of the crazy guy is more awesome than this generic shit we're getting. Unless they did the animation before they casted Nic.
-
Chris Sanders resume suggest that this movie will be better then you think.
-
Annnnnd Double Meh. "Never try anything new!" Wow... I'm a Republican.... Caveman! What a thinly veiled attack on Conservativism. Stupid caveman dad is stupid..... and conservative! Young, red haired daughter is brilliant and progressive! Bad stupid male! listen to your child! YAWN
-
While I thought How to Train Your Dragon didn't suck, it wasn't brilliant. It was passable. Chris Sanders isn't Hayao Miyazaki.
