Gary Oldman and Ray Liotta join HANNIBAL!

Published at:  May 05, 2000 1:42:13 AM CDT

Hey fava fans, Harry here with the latest from the creep that keeps up with all the peeps on HANNIBAL. Personally, I really adore the casting of Gary Oldman as Verger, and as the weaselly bastard FBI guy Paul Krendler... I think Liotta is dead on perfect. He makes an excellent worm. Here's the scoop...

They had a press conference in Italy some time last night and filled in some juicy info. They confirmed that Gary Oldman is going to be Verger (Oldman is an EXCELLENT choice!!!) and Ray Liotta is going to play the unfortunate FBI agent Paul Krendler. There is a good article at Empire Online: CLICK HERE TO READ IT!!!
They are going to be in Florence for five weeks and the release date is going to be Valentine's Day 2001!!!
Rock on, Headgeek! creep

    liotta! liotta! liotta!

    by tommy five-tone

finally, one of my favourite actors gets a good part in what should be a fairly cool movie! liotta's the muthafuckin' MAN!!! about time he was rescued from dodgy indie projects and cable material that just didn't suit (liked him as sinatra but let's face it - he didn't look a thing like him). oh, and gary oldman's pretty damn cool too. julianne moore can't do too much wrong (imagine if they'd chosen hilary 'the horse' swank! jesus no!), and she should curb hopkins' hammy tendencies. i'm getting more stoked about this one the more i hear about it! it's got giancarlo giannini in it, for chrissakes! it's gonna RULE!!!

    Excellent

    by stilt-man

Wow, I never read the book..but with Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Liotta, Julianne Moore on board I am looking at a movie with some serious potential. I only hope all these great actors do not give performances that cancel each other out, therefore dulling the impact the film could have on the viewer. It will be interesting to track the buzz on this film.

    Hannibal Teaser

    by indysolo

I just saw Gladiator (I previewed it at the theater I work at) and we had a teaser for Hannibal on it. It shows nothing (obviously since it doesn't start shooting until next week). It's all text ("Don't approach the glass", "Never forget what he is"), that sort of thing, and it has one shot of Hopkins in it, and that is taken from Silence of the Lambs.

As for Ray Liotta, I think he is one of the biggest "no-talents" in all of Hollywood, and I am very much loking forward to ***SPOILER*** seeing his brain being eaten (though I've read that the films ending will be different from the book).***END SPOILER***

Oh, and Gladiator was very good.

Paul Krendler is a big asshole!

    by methos

Man, this is shaping up to be a great film. Gary Oldman and Hopkins together, again. Although I like Ray Liotta (great in Demme's "Something Wild," "Goodfellas," and "Copland") I always thought that Chevy Chase was born to play Paul Krendler. Picture it. The arrogance of Krendler personified by today's Chevy Chase. It would be risky casting, but I thought it could've worked. Let's hope the spirit of Dario Argento permeates the shoot in Italy.

    Hopkin's acting

    by rolande

Was superb, dickhead. There are some things that are absolutes in this world, and Hopkin's performance as Lecter was incredible. Just keep watching Manhunter, sitting there in your soiled, smelly shorts.

    Verger

    by iamgladiator

Is it me, or is Stephen Hawking not the perfect choice for Mason Verger. Damn, let Baker do his shit on Hawking, and bam, the crowd is nauceous, and we're all happy.

Two Great Actors, Same Great Taste!

    by mrbeaks

Oldman may be one of the few actors around who can pull Verger off. It's too bad he won't be able to share much screen time with Hopkins. As for Liotta, I've long held that the man is one of the most underutilized thesps out there. I can't wait to see him dip into slimeball mode again.

More thoughts on Hopkins as Lector

    by lazarus long

Alright, let's try this one more time. Anthony Hopkins' performance in Silence of the Lambs was SCENERY CHEWING. Plain and simple. Overacting, hamming, whatever you want to call it. It was a choice he and the director obviously agreed upon. The audience loved it, (most of) the critics did, academy award, whatever. But the fact is, this was ENTERTAINMENT, not horror. If you were any more scared of Lector in SOTL than you were of Freddy in Nightmare on Elm Sreet 3: Dream Warriors, you probably still suck your thumb. Both Robert Englund and Hopkins turned previously horrifying characters into wise-cracking over the top audience pleasers. As I've also mentioned before, in the post-Scream era it's hard for people to be scared without winking because of the visual overdose we've all had from the last 20 years of moviemaking. Blair Witch succeeded in scaring people because it was low-budget and didn't beat you into submission. Compliment ANthony Hopkins all you want for creating an icon, but any fool with a knowledge of acting, the character of Lecter, and common sense can tell you Brian Cox's performance was more chilling because of its restraint. Don't even judge the films against each other. Just the performances. And try being objective for once.

    Am I really in Talkback???

    by jdegraf

Since when has anyone posted a positive respone on anything in talkback??? Well I for one loved the book. I love to shop with Hannibal and take in all the smells and items of everyday shopping for soaps and herbs. Good to see that people like the cast. I don't think Starling has as big a role in the this movie so hopefully nobody will miss Foster. I didn't miss her in the book. Foster sounds like she is making some flop anyway. Good to see you all like the cast!! At least most of you. For now that is. And that news conference would have been cool to get a taste of hannibal again. Way to go Hopkins, scare the shit out of till the movie comes out! Play the part in every interview you can.

    Ray Liotta???

    by studio lackey

Don't get me wrong, Ray Liotta has been one of my all-time favorite actors ever since he stole "Something Wild" from Melanie Griffith and Jeff Daniels...but I just don't think "Krendler" when I think of Liotta. Krendler's supposed to be a craven asshole...an impotent, insecure limp-dick who undermines Jodie's -- uh, I mean Clarice's -- career in order to assuage his own bruised ego. Without his job title, the man has no power whatsoever. He's a nothing. Liotta, though...I mean, the guy exudes too much genuine menace and ubermensch presence to be believable as a bureaucratic doofus. I think a better choice might have been someone like Garry Shandling...someone who can exude a real smarmy, creepy vibe. Sure, Liotta can be creepy, but in a scary, dangerous way. C'mon...can you imagine Ray Liotta sitting there blandly under Hannibal's control? The minute Lecter reached over to saw into his head, Liotta would burst into action, shoving Hannibal's head into the dinner plates before shoving the saw up his ass. Wait a minute, maybe I've stumbled across the new, revised ending!!

    Hopkins

    by horrorbiz777

Anyone ever notice that Hopkins performance was a bit based on Rutger Hauers turn as John Ryder in "The Hitcher" and Jack Nicholson in "The Shining" ? I do agree that Brian Cox made a better Lecter. However I can't say I didn't enjoy the performance Hopkins gave. Did he scare me ?
Oh hell no !!! But he was a hoot to watch. It's always fun to see actors go nuts with the roles. I just hope that they fix the screenplay and make it better than that stupid book. It reeked. Because they do have a good cast, a great director and just a decent all around thing going. Better movies than screenplays have been done before, just look at Jaws. That was a horrible novel but the film was great.

    Gary Oldman rules!!

    by movie freak

'Listen to the children of the night... what sweet music they make.'
Can you just imagine former Dracula Gary Oldman mumbling this as the deformed, chewed on Verger. I think Oldman as this guy is one of the best casting decisions in MOVIE HISTORY. And liotta as Krendler makes it just that little, tiny bit better!

    Ridley Scott

    by rambo-calrissian

You all thought that the sperm tossing scene in Lambs was gross, wait until this new one comes out. We have Ridley Scott behind the wheel, it will rock! Remember the "Chest Burst" scene from Alien? That scene made people puke. I love it.

    Stinky Casting

    by monkeyboylives

I agree heartily with the sentiment that Oldman is a weak choice for the role of Verger. While I'm sure he'll do a yeomanlike job (how could he not? It's the same role he's been playing for the past ten years), the casting is embarrassingly uninspired.

    Actors in Hannibal

    by son of ishmael

Great news about Ray Liotta and Gary Oldman the only thing that concerns me even slightly about this film is whether Hopkins can have the physical presence to pull off the Hannibal part. I understand that he had concerns about this and I think they were well grounded. Fine actor he damn well is being the only good part of MI:2 for me but Hannibal has serious physical strengh and speed. Perhaps another actor and after Manhunter (the prequel to Silence of the Lambs) I think it is realistic for other actors to play Hanibal v. well. Perhaps casting an unknown would have added to Hannibal's mystery and would have mean we would not know what to expect.
