Additional Information about other Cameron films added!!! James Cameron to produce ALIEN VS PREDATOR.... no.... Really

Published at:  May 04, 2000 11:08:18 PM CDT

Hey folks, I can't believe how cool this is, but... we might very well have found the cure for the shit ALIEN flicks we've seen recently, and... finally it looks like the LONG AWAITED fan-fave project, ALIEN VS PREDATOR is moving again. Once again my pals at 4FilmMakers.Com dropped me a heads up to tell me that none other than James Cameron himself would be producing this film. Now, beyond that details are very hazy. I did some poking around after their call, and I only know that this will not be made based on the Peter Briggs script that we've all seen. Also, it is unknown who the director of this project is... Knowing Cameron and who he likes currently, I'd say that Steve Norrington would have to be in the running to helm it, but I hear that movement is going to be very quick on this project. Apparently there is a script, but as of yet... I haven't a clue to the identity of the writers. My contact said that it was a writer and/or writers of a recent Sleeper hit. So... Start sniffing the trail folks, my prime spy that regularly moniters the cell phone activity while following Cameron hasn't checked in yet, but... if worst comes to worst.... I'll have to send my Astral Spirit on up to the third floor of the LS building and... peruse. Muhahahahahaaaaa

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR JAMES CAMERON'S PLANS AND GOINGS ONS!!!

Ah, finally my spy that monitors the LIGHTSTORM cell phones has checked in. You see, she's very excited about some of the things that Jim and company have been working on and here's the latest...

Harry, darling, what ever are you talking about? ALIEN VS PREDATOR. How strange! Ever since the last communique that I made with you the policy at Lightstorm has been to cease talking about top secret projects on the cell phones. Still though, I do hear some news. For example, I know that James is quite fond of John Bruno and has been working to help him get a director's gig and might be producing this film for him to direct. That is only my thoughts, there are lots of calls to Bruno. Also I know that Jimmy Boy is renegotiating his deal with FOX and his producing of AvP might be his way of showing that he supports the company line.

Now my true feeling is that this is a cover for BATTLE ANGEL, a project that Jim is negotiating with the original Japanese Creator of the Manga on which the Anime was based. I have also heard Jim-Boy comment about Guillermo Del Toro and this film. They are very close to wrapping up the negotiations on this project as we speak.

Jim is still hard at work on the Mars IMAX film and it's mini-series. He's also editting away on the DARK ANGEL tv pilot. I listened in on a pair of phone calls with Al Giddings about a joint project involving ocean exploration and escarpments. Personally darling, it is still pretty quiet over here at LIGHTSTORM, at least as the cell phones can tell, but who knows perhaps it is about to get hopping.

The Cell Phone Diva

Well... the mystery continues. The 4FilmMakers guy seemed pretty convinced that ALIEN VS PREDATOR was happening, and my other Lightstorm Source said that it was on the plate. Perhaps Jim has gone to using pencil and paper to send messages... damn his technological advances!!! Our spies will conquer! hehhehhe

    I don't like this idea

    by wrack_00

I'm leery. I loved the first two Alien films but couldn't really give a crap about the Predator "franchise." I never liked this idea all the years it was floating around, as it seemed to trivialize the Alien property. If Cameron is involved, though, something good might come of this, but didn't he also produce the mediocre Strange Days? Just shows that he can't hit all the taergets.

Stephen Norrington - YES! Real vision..

    by wesley snipes

One of the few young action directors who demonstrates real vision beyond the all the flash bang technique. You can tell there are certain themes and moods he's interested in invoking - It's not just "I want pretty lights" a la Michael Bay or A.Fuqua or another MTV whoever. Seems he has a thing for the dark future urban cyberpunk motif.. no wonder Cameron likes him. If Norrington gets on this project, I'll be first in line!

I am so dismayed that one of my favourite films of all time, Aliens, was bastardized by that French fucker Jeunet. Alien 3 is also such a let down in theory. I like it as a stand alone. But it doesn't deserve to be classed as an alien film tough. There is much that can be done with this film.. so so much. And with Cameron producing.. wow. This will be treat after what will be the letdowns of T3 and T4. Please make it work out good.. Please

although with norrington at the helm and cameron backing him up, this may well kick some ass. but change that fucking title! sure, 'alien vs predator' is what it's all about, but i'd feel like a clown asking for a ticket to it. hopefully this will generate enough interest in the whole 'predator' thing to get robert rodriguez's 'predators' off the ground.

    Grandiose Idea

    by iamgladiator

Deep within the jungles of the Congo, an expedition is following a group of gorillas. The alien ship lands, and has infected Predators on board. Following this ship are the Predators, who find the alien ship, and arrive in time to find their own, chests busted open, self destruction pending. Then boom. The alien ship blows up, destroying many square miles of rainforest. The expedition finds the gorilla group infected, and bam, splaat, a new breed of alien, which slaughter the expedition, which called home about the explosion. Arrive a military team, led by who else, Arnie. Surviving Predators are hunting Aliens, who are hunting just arrived military team. Consider it a prequel to the futuristic Alien films. In the end, Arnie kills every one of them ugly motherfuckers. Or not. Whatever happens, I'm there.

Hmmm, I'm more interested in the Battle Angel project that Harry's source alluded to. I've only ever seen the anime movie, which I found terrific unlike the previous poster; never read the manga. But this could potentially be a truly cool movie if Cameron can secure the rights. Too bad he wouldn't be directing it, because he could really conjure up some beatifully harsh images of that post-apocalyptic Earth. Too bad Natalie Portman's all grown up; Portman circa The Professional would have been a great choice to play the android girl.

    AvP *could* be cool...

    by jackburton

But only with a good script and a good director that can not only deliver action, but also atmosphere, which is as much, if not more important for a project like this. Now if Cameron was smart he'd make this his unofficial follow up to Aliens, which means that should he choose to do so he could resurrect Hicks, Bishop and maybe even a grown up Newt, plus it'd be no bad thing to get Schwarzenegger or even Danny Glover in there, but niether of them are 'must haves' in my book. Now I am actually one of the few who was, and always has been a big fan of Alien 3 (can't say the same for Alien Resurrection though, fuck I *hate* that newborn), but even so I'd be willing to have it replaced as such AvP if it was done right. There are some great possibilities in this project if it's handled right (and if Cameron is involved thats a damn good start, oh and to the poster above, Strange days was a fucking great film, at least in my mind, and mediocre in no way, but thats just my opinion) but if it's not handled just right then it could make even Alien Resurrection look great by comparison. Here's hoping for the best.

    by realfan-3

Come on guys, don't you remember a while back when Sigourney Weaver whined to Fox that AvP would be too much like a "comic book movie" and whined to Fox to kill the project??? And they DID! She has publicly stated that there will never be another Alien movie without her, so that's why we were "treated" to "Alien Resurrection" (I can't say it sucks, since I didn't see it because I was pissed off about AvP not getting made). Now let's all hope that Cameron really is passionate about this project and can keep her from fucking this one up.

    by neojunky

I'm surprised how short this one is though... lol. Okay I doubt that sigorney could nuke anything with the power of cameron around, and fox are probably looking at the collective computer game, book and comic sales that avsp already has going for it and thinking... gee this might be manufacturable. There's a wealth of material for any writer to mine. Sure the fans will probably want it set in a futuristic earth and they probably won't, but if fox see's a lot of people going... wow that's a cool idea, it might help them decide to make the film after all. Norrington could pull this off, and anyone who's seen his alien/terminator esque death machine (low budget, bad script, very well made) would agree with me on that I think. Give steve a good script. Have cameron there steering it in the right direction, put in some human characters we're going to care about and you have a hit. Oh and I don't think it's fair to blame Jeunet over alien ressurection. He did his job well enough, the direction was excellent. If you want to blame anyone, blame sigourney. I hear that Joss Whedons original script, which featured a reanimated NEWT was a lot better. Even he admits his ressurection one isn't as good. Jeunet not having a brilliant grasp on english isn't about to start rewriting the film is he? Anyway that's what I think...

    by fatal discharge

Uhm, but correct me if I'm wrong - James Cameron never did Spiderman because the rights were under litigation for all those years he wanted to make it. Once all the lawsuits were finally cleared up and the giant success of TITANIC, he wanted to make more 'serious' films, no?

    by samuraix47

As far as Spiderman and Cameron, he was involved with trying to secure the rights along with everybody else who had a claim on it, but in the end the courts gave it to Sony. Jim and John Thomas wrote both Predator scripts and had some ideas for more Predator stories. But thier recent work (wild wild west and mission to mars) blew chunks. We can only hope they get a workable beleivable script that can bring both franchises together. I predict that Bill Paxton will star in it, that way he can kick both alien and predator ass to make up for his demises in Aliens and Predator 2.

Radha Mitchell seems like the logical pick to replace Ms. Weaver in this series (esp. if they are going with the 'Pitch Black' writers).

How I would like to see it:
Radha Mitchell and her geologic exploration crew team stumble across a small group of Preadators on safari.
The aliens (used as hunting fodder) are out of control and wipe out most of the Predator hunting party.
Radha, geologists, and the last remaining Predator realize that it is very muggy on this planet and wouldn't she feel better if she stripped down to her barest of essentials?? I don't know...I think it has potential......

AvP is more likely to stink 'n' sink than succeed...

    by antifanboy

Me, I like all the Alien films so far. I can see something in each of the films that makes it better, to me, than any other film made in their respective years.

But I can understand people's grievances with A3 and Resurrection. We'd already seen the story of A3 in Alien, and Resurrection was a mish mash of the first two films. They lacked originality, scope, spectacle.

So why is everyone getting excited about AvP? We've seen four Alien movies and two Predator movies. We know what they do. Anyone who has played AvP knows what an alien killing a Predator looks like. The film is unlikely to be at all original in anyway.

And bearing in mind the slew of bad AvP comic books out over the years, can we really expect someone to actually make a good film? Cameron hasn't made a good film for eight years now.

AvP is like a one-joke movie. After you've seen the first alien kill a Predator, and the first Predator kill an alien, the movie won't have anything to offer. And I guarantee they'll show both of those things in the trailer.

I also guarantee it'll be a hit. It'll get worse reviews than Resurrection, but the fanboys will still go along because it'll be a must-see occasion.

The true Alien fans will hate it, however, because it will do what the comics do, and make the aliens just gun fodder.

(By true Alien fan, I mean someone who likes the films for what they are, not someone who likes Aliens and hates the rest, and would only want Alien 5 if they resurrected Hicks, Newt and Bishop on Acheron)

Why's everyone got such a grudge against A3 & AR?

    by the luggage

I remain mystified by the absolute hatred that everyone in the universe except me seems to hold against the last two Alien sequels. Okay, so neither of them are as good as Alien or Aliens, but come on. Alien was one of the most influential SF films ever made and Aliens remains one of the still select group of sequels that can hold thier own against thier predessecor. Isn't it sort of unfair to use these two as a measuring stick.

But it seems that anything bearing the Alien title has to be a masterpiece or it won't do. come on people, ease up a little. Alien 3 and resurrection were both flawed movies but they each had some interesting ideas and good visuals. More than any thing though, they have helped made the alien franchise unique.

The series is unique because it combines two qualities. One: every installment is distinct. While they all share that claustaphobic feel the fact that they have all been directed by relative newcomers with talent has been the series greatest strength. Say what you will about Scott, Cameron, Fincher, or Jeunet, they all have strong and distinct styles which give each installment its own kind of energy.
Two: the alien saga is a saga in the true sense of the word. Ripley's story advances in every episode. Instead of becoming a series in which Ripley simply kills aliens over and over we see her move from average crew member to mother figure with a vengeance to haunted, defeated figure to reborn half-alien. The film's show us pretty much every movement of Ripley's life (or memories, whatever) from the moment her ship picks up the alien distress signal, in which she's not sleeping or dead. This mean's each film is a new chapter in her life instead of just reiterations of the same story. Wheras the James Bonds, lethal weapon's and Die hard's give us carbon copy episode's which bear little real relation to any other installments the Alien films give us fresh, if misunderstood, viewpoints which allow the story to grow.

Oh yeah and AvP, It'll be either a classic or incredibly shitty, I can't see any middle ground. If the suggestion about Morgan and Wong is true than I'm betting on the former. THe second season of Millenium was one of the best of any series, ever.

Sorry to have made such a long post but I had to get a few things off my chest.

    The Weaver

    by nineinchnail

Weaver will either want to kill the whole thing or direct it herself. She has expressed interest about directing a prequel going back to the Alien's home planet in past interviews. This sounds like a much more exciting prospect but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. You can't blame her for wanting to be in on the whole thing though. She's been with the series since the beginning, & after having been credited as actress AND exec. producer on the relative disappointment that was Resurrection she probably wants to redeem herself. She's going about it the wrong way by throwing her weight around left right & centre, though.

    Alien vs. Preditor

    by rich the man

I cannot believe that they would try and steal the awesome story of alien's and turn it in to crap. Alien's has it's own majic with it's own queen, Sigourney Weaver. Even if this gets made I can promise you that the Alien series will continue. Sigourney is the only one who can bring life into Alien's. Alien Resurrection ruled. I loved it. I watch that movie repeatedly. It expanded her horizon's as Ripley. I think it took her to another level. So James Cameron, please don't mess with perfection without Sigourney. She might even consider doing another Alien's flick if people would stop harrassing her about it. I love you Sigourney Weaver. You, are my favorite actress of all time. Love Rich.

    Alien vs. Predator....cool!

    by the ponderer

Oh, yeah! This sounds great. Your right, the last few Alien movies have definitely gone down the tubes. What I want is there to be no major characters who are human. Just let the Predators and the Aliens go at it. I just want to see the ultimate brawl of all time and not have to have any wussy humans (k'mon, it's Predators and Aliens for crying out loud!) that I am supposed to be concerned about.

    Gimmicky.

    by lshb

Yeah, I've seen the game, read the comics, and I saw the Alien skull in Predator 2. It's fun, but neither the Aliens nor the Predators will receive the screen time they deserve. You'll split time between them, and character development will go to hell. Keep the universes separate.

do it from the comic book

    by bradelmore

This movie would kick ass if done correctly. People seem to have forgotten about the fact that the original story was through the eyes of a predator warrior and a women. The comic was a balls to the wall action book that portrayed the predators as more of an honorable samuri, a futuristic hunter with a strict code of honor, that had been hunting aliens since before the first movie as a way to test their prowess. This movie should be a ruthless cage match adadpted dirrectly from the first series of books. It isnt ALIENS, and it isnt PREDATOR, it is called ALIENS VS. PREDATOR, and is a stand alone movie in the series, it does not need any previous stars from the other movies.

    Face Huggers & Yautja

    by bootdisk

My guess is that the Marines will definately be in this, so instead of just getting bored after watching the first Xenomorph kill a Yautja and a Yautja kill a Xenomorph, we'll have a few more fights before we get bored . . . Marine vs. Yautja, Marine vs. Alien, and maybe a three way fight. That seems like'd take up 2 hours of film time, eh?

Seriously, though, I think I can guess what the plot is . . . Face Hugger attaches onto a Yautja. Face Hugger happens to be a Queen Face Hugger. Thus you have a Queen Xenomorph that spawned from a Yautja, ( a very bad ass monster )and then the other Yautja and the Marines fight together to stop it . . .

Similar to one of the AvP comix, I just think it'd be the best AvP comic for a movie.

    Don't worry

    by creed freak

This is such great news for a fan like myself. After hearing and reading about the Peter Briggs script I know Cameron will go his own way and make it a masterpiece without crap from Ripley. He will come up with his own true world of Aliens versus Predator that were a million times better than the comic rip off script by Briggs. The truth is Aliens was better than Alien and carried the series in too much more depth and great ideas made by Cameron himself. Weaver will have to respect him and his own ideas, because if the script is good and fox gives it the ok they will say Screw Weaver, we want this done. Weaver didn't make the Alien series, the Alien series made Weaver. Of course if the movie is produced, expect it in two or three years but knowing Cameron, this will definately be something to look forward to. God Bless James Cameron.

    Make this.....

    by wolvie6

I agree with richtheman,it should be like the first mini series. They need to keep Ripley far away from this one as well. The last two Aliens movies were total crap and everyone knows it. This would kickstart both franchises if done right.

Lions, Tigers, Bears.. Oh My !!

    by slammer

Forget human actors.... give us a squad of Predators (and we ain't talkin' these wet behind the ears kiddy ones like in Pred 1 & 2, no, crack hunting Preds)... give us all their available weaponry, give us a Starship Troopers style mass of Aliens clambering towards our honourable Pred heroes. Then the battle starts, the Preds hold a tight formation, shoulder cannons letting loose, electro magnetic guns stunning the Aliens in their masses. Out comes a Predator disc, he throws it true, it cuts through the Xenomorphs like they're not even there, loops at about a 1/4 mile and heads back to its owner, taking out even more Aliens on the way. But... there's too many of them. Wave after wave of Aliens clamber over their dead, towards the 9-10ft giant Predators. Its time for the spears............

Oh PLEASE MAKE IT SO !!!

Forget Arnie, forget all the big names, they'll just detract from the work of art this film deserves to be.

    Pred-Aliens anyone !!???

And what happened to those rumours that the Preds created the ALiens for the ultimate hunt??

Humans should be in it, but only in a Hudson style running in blind panic with no hope in hell characters.

This film is the Predators time. To finally make those twats out there understand one of the greatest concepts of movie aliens ever created.

    I HAVE SPOKEN... SLAM!

    not Camerons movie

    by bradelmore

The story never needed cameron, the idea never needed cameron, so the movie does not need cameron. I think they should find someone fresh who is a fan of the films or comic, or or even sci fi movies, who can deliver a fresh style and script. Like I said, this a stand alone movie that will never need the support of the other films, or their directors.

The awesome and bone chilling game Alien vs Predator for the 64 bit Jaguar game system remains one of the very best games on any system.
How gratifying to see a competant man Like James Cameron take this project under his wing.
Mr. Cameron, If you want a volunteer (For free) to become the first victim, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! let it be me.

    by dukester

Here's the deal folks. The aliens gravy train reached its peak at aliens 2.It ran out of steam after
aliens 3 which was an absolute cracker.Predator on the other hand has alot of avenues left unexplored. The 1st and 2nd predator movies were brilliant.
Fuck aliens for the moment. Lets have anoter predator movie.
If they are going to make AvP
stick to the comic book and lets h
have sigourney weaver play a cameo role where she gets blown away in the first 5 minutes .
