John Ary Sees MIAMI CONNECTION At Fantastic Fest 2012!!

Published at: Sept. 24, 2012, 8:07 a.m. CST

John Ary here with my favorite film so far from Fantastic Fest 2012.

Miami Connection was produced by Tae Kwon Do Grandmaster Y.K. Kim in the mid-80's and almost every studio and distributor on the planet passed on it.  No matter how you slice it this brawler is terrible, but it's produced in such a sweet and passionately amateur fashion, that you can't help but root for the members of the synth-pop band Dragon Sound as they battle an evil clan of ninjas based out of Miami.

Terry Malloy and I will surely be watching this again several times once it hits Blu-ray...

I had the chance to sit down to talk with Master Kim and the drummer from Dragon Sound Joe Diamand about their experiences making Miami Connection.  Look for that interview on Tuesday.

Sounds like it's slated for December 11th.

  • Okay, maybe not the singer, but everybody else? And who the hell is the Mahmoud Ahmedinejad-looking SOB? I've got to know!

Just about everyone gets to participate in at least one fight scene, but YK Kim and the bass player for Dragon Sound get the best scenes.

And surely you realize I must now blame you and Terry for making me go to Amazon and pre-order this damn movie. Oh, Christ, now I've got that song stuck in my head. DAMN YOU, BAD MOVIE MAVENS!

Two of my favorite Ain't It Coolers™ in one video?!

Can life get any better? John you must do more videos with Terry. He ups the cute quotient by 10. He's like a fuzzy geek Ewok (Geewok?) And no that's not the gayest thing I've said today. I'm sorry Terry AKA Ed. I would like to say you up the BADASS quotient, but that would be a lie. Anyway the video was cool guys and doubled my excitement for Miami Connection. Must counter DWTS with PREDATOR. STAT!

    Finally saw it!

Some friends and I caught this thing at a midnight showing at Landmark Cinemas in New York City and man, it's every bit as crapoliscious as the trailer/buzz/reviews would have you believe. One of the the truly amazing things about MC is how the various plot elements just sort of happen randomly and have almost nothing to do with one another. This is a SPOILER but really, who cares? Dragon Sound (btw, they 'perform' another amazing song called 'Against the Ninja' that's almost as ear-assaultingly awful as 'Friends Forever') get involved in this whole mess because they are hired to replace the house-band at some crappy club and the former band wants them out of the way! REALLY!! And it just gets better.
