Carla Gugino replaces Kelly Preston in Robert Rodriguez's SPY KIDS

Published at:  May 03, 2000 5:18:07 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with the inside skinny on who Rodriguez cast in the last minute replacement of Kelly Preston, who is recovering from just recently giving birth. The role is as the spy kids' Mom and spywife of Antonio Banderas. Her name is Carla Guigino, most likely best known to most of you as being the lady in the midst of all the intrigue in Brian DePalma's SNAKE EYES, a film who's original cut I'd love to see. Robert had to fly up to New York and do a massive audition process, then take the lucky lady back down to Austin for filming... apparently on Monday. Whew... talk about going from unemployed to employed.... Man... That's got to be weird as all hell. Well, I've got to take on off, I've more spy work of my own to commence...

Jeers to Veers! Snake Eyes Rocks!

    by brettl

Veers' brief dismissal of the wonderful "Snake Eyes" seems to have missed the entire point of the film. "Snake Eyes" is very much about loyalty, friendship, betrayal and not crossing the line between corruption and evil. It is a smart, fast and vivid morality play that was unfortunately dampened by a last-minute ending. Sorry if Veers was expecting "Armageddon" or some nonsense like that, but DePalma is too smart and insightful for that. It's such a shame DePalma is so often misunderstood, because his films are anything but "emotionless."

    Carla Gugino...

    by agentcooper

...Also played Micheal J. Fox's girlfriend on the first season of Spin City, played the young bride who hooked up with the tabloid reporters and the angel in the Travolta stinkbomb Michael, and can currently be seen on every commercial break on every network as she shills for Clarol, "cause she's worth it." Carla's hot and deserves much success. Unfortunately, from what I've heard about this film thus far, it doesn't sound like this is the one that's going to put her in the major leagues.

Snake Eyes was NOT a piece of shit.

    by hero for hire

Snake Eyes had a great first half and then got worse and worse as the movie neared a clunking end. I would pay four bucks to see it again, if I could just walk out after Cage's character views the videotape.

    Hi, I'm VEERS. I'm ED NORTON's bitch!!

    by veer s

Since I'm the authority on Brian DePalma, everyone else should shut up. Although, I do admit that DePalma should have replaced CAGE with EDWARD NORTON, who is the BEST actor of his generation. (KEEPING THE FAITH is the new CITIZEN CANE). Also, they should have replaced LUIS GUZMAN with JOHNNY DEPP, my other favourite actor. (Notice how I spelled favorite). Like a true Brit, eh? Anyway, I'm off for some tea and plenty of boiled food, while I watch me best football club on the tele.

STAR WARS Ep.II Casting NEWS !!

    by syd mead

I heard on a local Bay Area (S.F. California) radio
station that some major last minute auditioning is going on for
    Anikin at the ranch. Appairently,
Ms. Portman/Queen Amidala was there to test
with the last few pickings of the prospective new cast member. This
has nothing to do with what Harry's talking about but I thought some TalkBackers might want to know. --Syd.

is what snake eyes was. Lame-ass, feel nothing, Nic Cage has a broom up his ass to make his eyes bug that much out stoooopid. Oh yea, when Carla Gugino was on Spin City, she was the girlfriend for the first few months, then go canned. When they re-ran her episodes later that summer, she had been edited out, like Big Brother had come and taken her away...creepy shit man, creepy...

    Carla Gugino deserves much love!

    by buckinator x

I think she needs to get a better agent. She could be a major star, but they booted her off Spin City so Michael J. Fox's character could screw around, she had her biggest part in DePalma's worst movie(not her fault, she was breathtaking), she got a role in Chicago Hope just as it was closing its doors. The girl ain't lucky. She is beautiful and talented, just not lucky. Hopefully this will turn it around.

Snake Eyes was just a half-assed Hitchcock movie

    by ogami itto

C'mon, you know it's true. It's the worst Hitchcock movie that Hitchcock didn't direct. Everyone knows that DePalma wears his influnces on his sleeve (anyone remember the stairway seen from Battleship Potemkin he ripped off for the Untouchables?) Sure, I love Scarface, but for the most part DePalma is a hack.

    WHO GIVES A CRAP?

    by trigger95

Am I the only one out there who could care less about this project? Rodriguez seems like a decent enough guy, but this movie sounds absolutely dreadful (
and if Kelly Preston, Amy Brenneman, and Lauren Holly all passed, it must be). Come on, Harry, I know Robert's your buddy, but at least try to show some integrity. Then again, maybe I'm wrong-- maybe this movie won't turn out to be "Undercover Blues Part II".

    When DePalma makes a movie. . .

    by thereisnospoon

It's all about the script. They can be fantastic (Scarface, Untouchables, Carrie, and I liked Carlito's way!)or dismal (Raising Caine, a grip of others) or sometimes a fantastic movie with a few dismal parts (Mission Impossible - loved it by why did Phelps shoot his wife?)or a dismal movie with a few fantastic parts(The first 20 minutes of Snake Eyes).

    Portman

    by dead kennedy

Why would they go with Kelly whats-her-face over Carla whats-her-face or any other shamelessly self-promoting hollywood hussy when they could have... oh hell, i don't know, i just like typing in sords that are hyphen-ated. try it, you'll like it. As for that little tidbit about Natalie Portman at Skywalker Ranch, it is true, I was there to see it as I was... uhm... "paparazzing" the delightful Ms. Portman around the west coast. Have you ever noticed that on those internet sites that have "porno of the stars" on it, the lighting is all wrong? Why would they choose to light their face from one direction and their body from the other? But I digress. The perfect woman for this role, however, is my mother. I mean, my mother is just so kick-ass that no one could deny her commanding screen presence. Our old Super-8 hyphen-ate films of her doing the jitterbug are on par with the finest work that that auteur DePalma has ever done. What, by the way, does auteur mean, anyway? Is it like French-Fries, only smaller? You know what I mean. It's my job to keep punk rock elite.

    Who cares...

    by sonofjorel

Alright kids, What the hell, does anyone care about this freakin' movie? So it's directed by Rober Rodrigez, WHO CARES?!?! The last good thing he did was From Dusk Till Dawn. And that was FIVE YEARS AGO!!! As far as DePalma, after Snake Eyes and Mission To Mars I've lost all faith in the man. He's VERY over-rated. Like he's the only one who can to long-ass tracking shots! God, I've seen other filmmakers do that and do it MUCH better.

    Brian DePalma is sleeping

    by methos

I still think DePalma's got a few great films left in him. You just know he had nothing to do with that lame '90s rock song at the end of "Snake Eyes." Anyone that doesn't get DePalma must read "The Devil's Candy" about the making of "The Bonfire of the Vanities." It's a funny, affectionate, and very moving story about one of the last decades first bombs. I always thought he'd return to more personal filmmaking after the success of "Mission: Impossible." But after "Mission to Mars," who can tell? Maybe his love of cinema is dead? Spielberg said the only way he'd know that his best friend Brian is dead is if he signs on to a "Home Alone" sequel. BTW: Criterion is supposed to release "Sisters" on DVD in the Fall!

Carla in her bra in "Snake Eyes!" Need I say more?

    by cereal killer

Just seeing Carla washing her shirt is almost worth the price of admission. She has a very sweet chest. I've been hot for her since "Son-in-Law" and was glad to see her join the cast of "Chicago Hope." "Hope" had the best female cast of any show on TV. It seems like every year they added somebody that I loved; Carla, Christine Lahti (God I love her), Katherine Herrold, Lauren Holly, that chick from "In The Company of Men." It'll be a shame to see that show go off the air. As for "Spy Kids," it sounds like a piece of shit. "Undercover Blues" revisited. Rodriguez is an overrated hack who hasn't really made even one good film. "Faculty" blew. "From Dusk til Dawn" started out okay then ate greasy globs of shit once they arrived at the bar/vampire house. The sooner Hollywood recognizes Rodriguez for the no-talent that he is the better. He can go back to hanging out with Harry and spare us his crappy "films."
