"Are You Jackie Robinson?" - The Trailer For 42 Has A Clear Answer!!
The Kidd here...
Warner Bros. released one hell of a powerful trailer for 42, Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson film about the Hall of Famer breaking down baseball's color barrier, tonight, and, while it'll arrive in time for the start of baseball season next year, I wish we were getting this a lot sooner.
Between Chadwick Boseman invoking the baseball legend and Harrison Ford ditching his grumpy old man routine in order to play Brooklyn Dodgers' GM Branch Rickey, this may go beyond just being a really good baseball flick, heading into solid film territory period.
Have a look...

If you ever hear any recordings of the real Jackie Robinson... he sounded like Eddie Murphy's impression of white people.

Why does every fucking movie with black people in it have to have hip hop music in the trailer?? Jesus Christ that's annoying. Apart from that, the trailer looks good, I guess.

So, how is it we have a trailer for this already, yet still nothing for "Hitchcock" which will be out in 2 measly months??

And it's good!

That tune was about as fitting as the one they used for Red Tails.

Shoehorning anachronistic hip hop into this is seriously offensive
by The_Genteel_Gentile
It actually kinda smacks of racism. How stupid do the suits think young audiences are? I think they can handle orchestrated music or a little period authentic junk joint ragtime blues just fine. I damn near want to boycott the whole shebang on grounds of egregious condescension. Of course Brian Helgeland did make that anachronistic turd "A Knight's Tale" - so maybe he signed off on that garbage. Now let me put this joint on mute and lay some of David Newman's "Hoffa" score on top so I can see (feel) what we're really dealing with here... ah yeah, now that's the stuff!

Good to see Harrison Ford doing some character work.

No need to go all Charles Murray on a brief sample in a trailer.
-
I'm not a huge fan of shoehorning new music into a period film to begin with, but this was egregious and, as some have mentioned, kind of racist. I don't care if the song is about Jackie Robinson or not. If there's ever been a movie that could use some inspirational Rudy-style orchestration in the trailer, it's a movie about Jackie Robinson and yet they decided to go with rap music. There's already been at least two movies about Jackie Robinson that I can think of, so I wasn't really all that interested in this movie to begin with, but that seals the deal for me. Maybe I'll check it out one Sunday afternoon on HBO, but that's about it.

It literally feels like the only reason it's there is because they are trying to get black people excited to see the movie. Like wtf, use a dramatic score or something.

Then synch this David Newman suite from "Hoffa" to 1:44 and pause (or maybe 1:42, because youre going to need a second or two to go back and hit play on your paused "42" trailer). My Gosh, people still whine about rap/hip hop music in trailers??? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU LOSERS!?!?!?
by Bricklyne
It's a trailer. Its primary purpose is to market the movie - specifically and hopefully to the demographic that buys most rickets. What generation do you think that Demographic falls into? And what music do you think they by and large listen to? Add to that the fact that he movie is about a Black baseball America legend (how many tickets do you think this movie is going to sell in black neighborhoods?) and the fact that the song IS ABOUT JACKIE ROBINSON, dumbasses, and it makes you an uber-loser if you find yourself whining about the choice of music. I mean, what makes you think that that song is going to be in the actual movie? And if a trailer music song selection is enough to dissuade you from watching a movie, then frankly speaking, you had no business watching that movie anyway, and they're better off without your money. Jeeeesuz, what is wrong with you idiots?

That rap-hop music makes my earholes sad! Black people music is strange and annoying! Dude, obviously it's not what us white nerds would put in the trailer. Fanboys suck at marketing. 'Nuff said. Do you seriously doubt the movie will be filled with operatic string crescendos, and completely void of Jay-Z? Shut the fuck up and realize that marketing involves being a shrewd, biased asshole, and that's what it takes to sell something. That being said, they should probably be selling a baseball movie to white people. Not a lot of hue variation in the stands these days.
-
Who else came for the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?
-
Really great suggestion. Very nice work.
-
Most biopics are a snooze, this one looks to have some teeth. Not sure on the accuracy. I'm going by the visuals at this point. Harrison Ford, thank you for doing something different, like not wagging your finger ! Just about every trailer has a temp track or uses music only used in the end credits. I can't count how many times the 1982 Conan score has been used in trailers for other movies. Since filming for 42 (pardon the pun) rapped only a few month ago, you're an idiot to guess this is the music used through out the movie. FYI, Jackie Robinson was treated like shit after his playing pro baseball was over, no one would let him be even an assistant coach, he ended up coaching for the Montreal Royals where he started his baseball career.

What?! Hollywood is making a sports film about a black man living with segregation! How original!
by Tacoloft
But seriously folks... if anyone deserves a story told on film it would be Jackie Robinson. Now the question I have is...where are the segregation / rising up films about the Native Indian, Asian, Hispanic, Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders, Native Australian, ect...? What about all the races in the Star Trek cannon? Is there a segregation / rising up film about a white man? Is it Braveheart?
-
Harrison Ford does look a lot like him!
-
I'm usually the doddering old-fashioned crank about such things but that's an awesome teaser. Can't wait to see Harrison playing a non-athletic character; he's got the wonky, jawed ebullience that Rickey had too, which is great to see. As far as rap vs. swelling inspirational music, I'm sure that'll make an appearance in the long trailer to come...but I sure hope not. How many times have we seen stuffy orchestral scores that end up sounding like everything else? "Hoffa" was the perfect example of this inflated sense of personality not being appropriate for the subject matter, and this film needs a different approach musically. Not saying rap music but something off-angle, the way "12 Monkeys" was scored with argentinian tango. Someone above said it right: Fanboys know nuthin' 'bout no marketing, they can't think outside the box until someone shows them the other side of the cardboard, then once they've seen it, alls they can say the next time is "Why aren't you showing me the other side of the box (again)??"

-
....are overreacting (now there's a surprise on this board!). The music is clearly a style choice which fits the tone and pace of the trailer better than you would admit. Personally I'd rather have this than 'the sappy white music' over Speilberg's Lincoln trailer.

It's a sign of the times that we are now categorizing music into races...
by Tacoloft
Rap music has been owned by a white man (Eminem). Who cares? And I don't even know what white music is... is it country music??? Or just music that sounds bad? Apparently the white man f*cked that up in history too? Everything is now judged through the lenses of race and it is sickening. "Obama- first black president!" Uh, no- he was the first Bi-racial President. But who cares?! Apparently everyone... Jay-Z doing a song for the trailer...I don't really care. As long as the message in the historical story is true to form then it's all right with me.

It is, now, international YOUTH music. "World Music." The trailer music is designed to appeal to a younger demographic who identify with the pain and raw emotions of struggling to define your own identity. Hip-Hop hasn't been "black" for a very long time. As for whether Jackie Robinson would have appreciated the music...psychologically, he would probably have missed the musicality of ragtime or jazz or whatever he liked, but appreciated the anger. Hugely.

Don't know if anyone noticed but we are in a new era. For better or worst Jay-Z's music has been running amok for the last year or so in every commercial from Battlefield 3, G.I. JOE, GANGSTER SQUAD, CHRYSLER CAR COMMERCIALS, THE INTRO MUSIC FOR THE MIAMI HEATm Budweiser and for Hooters...I think. Sometimes his tunes work for an ad while others they crash terribly, namely Gangster Squad and this Jackie Robertson joint (sorry Spike) Point being, they are trying to grab an audience who would not normally go to the movies and see a biopic. So they put hippity hop in the soundtrack to attract, not just black folks but a target market between the age of 15 and 25... It's called Marketing, If the Jigga Man is hittin you ol' geisers like a cold shower... turn the volume down on your computer a play your Gramophone

This trailer fucking rocked! The song they used really did work against the material, and I'm as excited as fuck to see Harrison Ford show his acting ability finally. The guy playing Jackie Robinson looks very impressive too. And it looks like they aren't going to glide over the fact that Jackie got his start in Montreal first before going to Brooklyn. That's an important fact that's not been spoken of a lot, but his playing for the Montreal team is when the color barrier was first broken.

I mean he deserves it. He made an Archeologist chasing a religious, supernatural artifact believabe; delivered the finest performance of his career playing the neurotic Allie Fox in "The Mosquito Coast"; feeling overwhelming empathy for John Book's dilemma in "Witness", and believe in the possibility that you could get away with a name like Han Solo. Now it seems he is channeling the Day-Lewis tact of immersing himself into the character with "42"...Oh well - better late than never.

Sure, African Americans aren't particularly prevalent in MLB, but look at all the black Dominicans, Central Americans, etc. Do you think someone like, I dunno, Vlad Guerrero ever would have been able to play in the Majors without the help of Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige and everyone else who broke those barriers?

Modern music like rap or hip hop to the soundtrack! That ruins the whole feel of the movie! And takes away the illusion of the time the movie takes place!
-
Look, I love hip hop. But the shit just doesn't fit here. The song references Brooklyn and directly Jackie Robinson, but not in a way that I think fully represents what this film is supposed to represent. More over, it just reeks of some fucking suit saying, "Hey this is about a black dude, let's put rap in it...that'll make black people like it, right?" As their colorless yes-men agree with wide eyes. The story may be good, but yeah, pandering is always weak as fuck. Like that Gangster Squad trailer with, oddly enough, another Jay-Z song as the music. Next step Hollywood is just going to have Madea do voice overs in trailers to draw in that "target demographic."

by The_Genteel_Gentile
01. Cue the "42" trailer up to the black screen after the green rating banner and pause (0:05) 02. Then synch this David Newman suite from "Hoffa" to 1:44 and pause (or maybe 1:42, because youre going to need a second or two to go back and hit play on your paused "42" trailer). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUgglGF4gvs 03. Put the "42" trailer on mute and play both so that the music from "Hoffa" goes along with the "42" trailer (it should crescendo and dissipate right as the "42" title comes up at the end). It's nearly in step with every beat and much more resembles the resonance, relevance and reverence this man's inspiring story deserves. Music is a powerful evocateur, afterall, and can make or break a thing. Give it a try and if you don't think it vastly improves the feeling of this trailer then there's probably something significantly wrong with you and you have my sincere pity.
-
You know marketing? Prove it. You can have Hoffa, it's fine music. To the rest of y'all -- yeah, I said "y'all" -- this is Faith Hill talkin' at ya: When was the last time you guys went to a party with 20-something people? Rap does not = black people. Song mentions Jackie Robinson. It's not some random slice of urban. It also doesn't overwhelm the piece. These movies need to appeal to youth -- you know, people who are the same age as Jackie was then. Why the narrow take on period pieces? Were you angry that "The Help" didn't use sepia filters on the lense or in the DI? The film will have a classical score, I'm sure, but let the advertising work its thing. At least it's not garishly regurgitating the same heroic cues from "The Natural" or whatever else they always use, they're not reusing Transformers sound effects like in "Battleship", they're not doing the equivalent of the comedic 'record scratch' cliches. Whoever told all you grandpas to ignore this film and go sit in the corner and listen to your old John Williams records -- whom I adore -- was right. You're hemmed in by orthodoxy in the same way that "Lincoln"s trailer was not only precious, but utterly predictable in its look and tone; there was nothing surprising about it. "42" may surprise us.

@rumourd - I'm not sure what you mean "prove it".
by The_Genteel_Gentile
One need not work in advertising to have a keen understanding of the advantages a proper aesthetic approach can have in attracting the widest demographic. In fact, it's evidently beneficial if one does not. Amateur enthusiasts, afterall, are the lifeblood of works of true passion in their purest form. All audiences want to feel respected and not be pandered to whilst still having their emotions stirred with the promise of authenticity. Anachronistic music is simply condescending and inauthentic to the integrety of the premise being portrayed. I feel fairly confident that I did "prove it" by taking action and selecting a far more appropriate and satisfying underscore with precise instructions as to how and where it should be cued. In summary, I must clearly possess both a better sense of commercial appeal and a more refined taste in music than your championed Philistines that stitched this shameful abomination together. The proof is wher it has always been - in the pudding.

Liked the imagery and acting, hated the inappropriate music. And I'm a huge hip hop fan. I've listened to it for years and helped produce beats locally. But I want to hear something orchestral or at least era-appropriate so I can feel the power of what I'm watching. Especially with Jackie Robinson. I read a book about his life a few years back and was blown away by what he went through yet was able to accomplish. One of the most powerful and significant real-life stories ever.
