THE GREAT GATSBY Gets A New Release Date For May!!
The Kidd here...
After being pulled from the holiday release calendar in order to allow for some more time to complete post-production, Warner Bros. has reset THE GREAT GATSBY for a summer spot in 2013, planting the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel on May 10. Internationally, THE GREAT GATSBY will then be rolled out the following week.
IRON MAN 3 is set to open the summer on May 3, and typically studios have run clear of the first blockbuster for at least two weeks, but with the only competition on the schedule being the romantic comedy ABOUT TIME and another Tyler Perry movie, clearly this is a spot where Warners thinks they can take advantage before the rest of the summer's big fare arrives.

I don't think Gatsby's audience will be the same as Iron Man 3's
by Detective_Fingerling
so I suppose its as good a release date as any. That said, Tyler Perry will wipe the floor with Daisy Buchanan's blood.

Even though they're not going after the same audiences, this could backfire hugely...

...unless IM3 somehow bombs out of the gate, anything coming out the week after it is going to get creamed. Or, to quote Governor Tarkin: "It's an awful risk you're taking...this had better work."

Just watch "J. Edgar" and "The Aviator," same damn guy just one with a ridiculous accent and horrible old person make-up. DiCaprio puts out a good performance about one in 5 movies. "Django" better be the next one! I couldn't care less about this movie.

Seems like a bad time to come out with this film. Times are tough afterall and most won't feel like watching some assholes fight over a woman.

Who by the way looks miscast to me.

Daniel Craig would've been a solid Gatsby 10 years ago.
by Spandau Belly
Get Andrew Dominik to go back in time and tell this story with Craig in the lead role.

Does that mean it is going to be in 3D? I can't wait for the sequels: The Great Gatsby II: Bootlegger Boogaloo Gatsby: Bootlegger Boogaloo II - Flapper's Revenge Great G4tsby: The Party's Over Great Gat5by: Depression Doldrums 2G6: The Final Chapter GGVII: The Gatsby Chronicles - Rise of the Great Gatsby

Sorry is just me or is Di Caprio completely forgettable in every role? He's fucking awful

Yes, he fucking sucks. The gig is up, unfortunately Hollywood Directors still think he's a genius.

Early screenings demanded more Channing Tatum

Will they fix the glaring misspelling of "Ziegfeld" on the sign in all the Times Square shots?

Coming out a week later won't hurt it, as long as films don't come out the same weekend these days they're usually safe
by moonlightdrive
from competition. There is such a huge drop off from opening weekend these days. Rarely anything has 'legs' and the movies that do are usually surprise hits. Otherwise it is something they is so good that it benefits from repeat business. If people want to see a movie then they will usually see it during the first week of it's release. If they're then regular moviegoers, come the next week they will be wanting to see something they haven't already seen.

so i don't see why not. As far as i'm aware, the Tom Cruise Sci-Fi actioner "Oblivion" is opening next summers pack. As for "Iron Man 3": it will pretty much rule the month anyway.

Just kidding

...i'll be at home laying on my king sized bed with fine linens, surfing the net, reading about the latest US war with some middle eastern country, then i'll watch some porn amd jerk off a bit. Then, after toweling off, i'll watch The Great Gatsby on netflix. Afterwards, i'll come to AICN, where nerds who are angry about the fact that no female will allow them to put their penis into their vagina will be arguing about the latest Batman reboot and the newest Avatar sequel.

At least Di Caprio still brings in the box office.

Or bring some ganja food. Or melt some hash in a coffee. Or, Fuck, just go all out and drop some acid. I guarantee it will be the funniest or most horrifying version of the film possible.

Saw a screening of this movie a couple weeks ago in pasadena. The effects weren't completed, there was a temp score and the first act felt like a roaring twenties update of Moulin Rouge, very Baz Luhrman. The breadth of Long Island and New York City is nearly all CGI. Toby Maguires vanilla performance threatens to bring the whole thing crashing down. DiCaprio however, is a marvelous and sympathetic Gatsby. He owns every scene save the ones he shares with Joel Edgerton. You could argue Warrior was Edgerton's coming out party, but I would point to his portrayal as the blustery womanizing Tom Buchanan as his break out role. Powerful stuff. The second and third acts unfold elegantly with an intense tet-a-tet between Dicaprio and Edgerton that elevates the entire film. Carey Mulligan's Daisy is pitch perfect. I look forward to seeing the completed film, I just wish Maguire had been able to tap into the same energy he had in Brothers.
-
Seems like a big risk. I have to guess that lots of people who were exposed to GATSBY in high school or wherever aren't exactly clamoring to see a film version.

You'd think they learned from their mistakes.

The book sucks, the movie sucked, this new movie will suck - and nobody is going to pay to watch.

Beginning around GANGS OF NEW YORK, he really started looking pretty plump. And his head seems to be getting wider. I guess it's an aging thing, but sooner or later he's gonna have to start taking "dad" roles like Matt Damon, who is also currently complicating the lives of innocent wardrobe units. When I saw WE BOUGHT A ZOO, I thought for a moment that I accidentally walked into I DRINK ALONE: THE GEORGE THOROGOOD STORY.
-
Hire the director of Moulin Rouge! and a guy who gives the same bloody performance in almost every bloody film he does. That's how.

Les Miserables. It's going to get all of the Oscars; at least that is what the studio probably thinks. Who the hell needs The Great Gatsby to be in 3-D?

Why teachers make students read Gatsby in high school is beyond me.
by MISTER RUMBLES
It's a great book when you're older and have been through some more life, but when you're in high school it's boring as fuck.
-
Most books in your studies are boring as fuck. It's a combination of age and requirement. You may not be old enough yet to fully appreciate them, or you resent being forced to read something that absolutely holds no interest for you. At least that's the way it was for me in HS. Once you're older and are reading them on your own time, and on your own terms, and at your own pace, your opinions tend to change. Mine did, although not for everything.
