Here's An Exclusive Sneak Peek Into Joe Dante's New Movie THE HOLE!
Nordling here.
Big Joe Dante fan here. I think he makes genre films that punch back, be it GREMLINS, THE HOWLING, his snippet in TWILIGHT ZONE THE MOVIE, and even a charming movie like MATINEE has a little bit of an edge to it, even if it's also sweet and heartfelt.
Dante's been a bit quiet in recent years, but he's coming back to filmmaking, and he's shooting in 3D to boot - none of this post-conversion stuff - in his new movie THE HOLE. THE HOLE opens September 28th in theaters and will be available on VOD on October 2nd. Here's a little peek - it's not much, but perhaps it'll whet the appetite a bit:
And here's a brief synopsis:
From director Joe Dante (Gremlins) comes a 3D thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried deep within the human mind. After moving into a new neighborhood, brothers Dane and Lucas, along with their neighbor Julie, discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home. They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and nightmares coming to life, they are forced to come face to face with their darkest fears to put an end to the mystery of THE HOLE.
Glad to see that Joe Dante is back. We've missed him.

Got this on DVD but haven't watched it yet.
-
He has a lifetime pass from me in that, good or bad, I'll at least check it out. Good to see he's doing 3D right.
-
I do love Joe Dante's classic stuff, of course, and hope this film succeeds, but if that wasn't a basic synopsis of The Gate (basement instead of backyard) then I'll eat my hat, sir. Obviously the footage was not Gatey... whatever, anything's better than Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

Finally watched this. It's low budget, the acting is ok but it's real nice to see Dante trying to get back in the game.

It's not as high concept as the Gremlins movies or Small Soldiers, but it is another one along those lines. There's even a 2 foot high pest menacing one of the main characters. I enjoyed it and it's a good horror movie for young kids and families. But it's mostly Joe Dante's involvement that I even gave it a try at all. It is was another director I might not have liked it as much.
-
"If it was another director I might not have liked it as much."
-
Whatever, I have not seen it, and look forward to it.
-
That was the movie with a 16 year old Kiera Knightly flashing her tits, right?
-
and learn fucking aicn needs to learn what the word exclusive means
-
There was a movie where she flashed her tits but this is a different movie with the same name. I think.
-
IMDB and Wikipedia list the release date for this as 2009. However, on Amazon it's available for pre-order, citing the release date as 2012. Not sure what's up with that. Are they doing a re-release, and pretending the first one never happened? Strange.

Nordling, a bit more info would be nice. Why is the US getting this two years later than everyone else!?

because this was released in the rest of the world in 2009.... The only place it wasn't released was the united states........ It hasn't been sitting on the shelf... it's been legally available on DVD for quite a while.... I never understood why it hasn't seen US distribution until now...
-
...I don't think it means what you think it means...
-
well said
-
Strange... this movie has been available on dvd since 2011 in the Netherlands. Why was it released so late in the USA?

Safe to assume old people are bad at everything, especially directing?
by Domi'sInnerChild
It's been painful watching 80's directors limp through 2000's and then try for a weak comeback in the 2010's. I'm looking at you Ridley. Next up, De Palma.
-
Favorite movie of all-time, just something about it puts me in a good mood. "Smells like they're cooking a god-damn cat over there." Great lines throughout, just classic.
-
I'm not usually a criticiser, but yes: it would make for better journalism to flag up the fact that this film has been available worldwide for 2 years+. Surely that's part of the story for AICN readers, and i know other aicn writers have mentioned this before. Nitpicking aside (i still LOVE aicn), THE HOLE is a lot of fun. My pal David Hall, who writes for EatSleepLoveFilm in the UK, described it as "THE BEYOND"-lite FOR KIDS. It's a great little movie....
-
The US seems to get films a bit after everyone else these days.
-
but if I found a bottomless hole in my basement that unleashes unspeakable evil, I think I'd just move out.
-
at least.
-
But don't worry, you're not missing much. Far away removed from the classic Dante we know. Plus, it's bizarre watching one of his flicks today minus the sounds of, Jerry Goldsmith. "Gremlins", "The 'Burbs" and "Matinee" are testament to the mans talents.
-
not Joe Dante's best work, infact I would wait until it comes out on the TV which will be quite soon seeing as it has already been on dvd around the world for three years now. The movie is low budget and very dark and hard to see stuff in places, not Gremlins by a long shot...

Yup, saw it a year or two ago. Lots of old school fun. Well made and good use of 3D.

See what I did there?

When AICN first posted the trailer, I went to youtube and to my pleasant surprise I found this. /watch?v=h1gSRFwY8OI&feature=related Nordling, you should tell Joe Dante and the distributor of the film. It's kind of sad.

I was referring to the movie itself as my girlfriend likes to call it ''the best movie joe dante has made in years'' and publicly castigates me when i refer to it with its original title.

I watched THE BURBS on Netflix this weekend.. never watched that movie growing up and this year I've watched it twice
by Autodidact
I didn't even like it much the first time I watched it earlier this year but the chick I had over picked it off Netflix. It's cute, fun, and I love the small scale of it.
-
It's sort of more like a longer episode of Eerie Indiana but it's great to see him back and BRUCE DERN!
-
...but only made it through the first five minutes. Not that it seems bad at all, but because on the DVD I have it seems they've dubbed over words like "shit" with less offensive (or more kid-oriented) language. That kind of thing burns my ass so much I can't watch a movie where it occurs. It will be interesting to see if the U.S. release is any different.
-
..The Howling. I never thought Gremlins or Explorers were very good films.
-
Some directors are given project after project and produce utter crap every time they step to the plate. Yet a great director with some big hits to his name and a few really terrific movies (Gremlins 2, Innerspace, and Explorers) makes a few missteps (the Burbs) and he's resigned to the dust bin. I don't get it.
-
Something smells funny about this "Hole" movie...
-
Gremlins,The Howling,Piranha Innerspace is #4

you really can't call this a new film dude. bit embarrassing.
by ben sheppard
And Innerspace is the best I'm sayin. Then Gremlins.
-
I love that movie and just watched it a few days ago again with my brothers.

There have been numerous projects, all different mediums, that have kind of explored this plot base of a house with a hidden entrance into a vast...well...something that unleashes some sort of evil ever since Mark Danielewski published his first novel, House of Leaves, about seven or eight years ago. I know Borders gave this book a solid push when it came out and it developed a small cult following and I can't help but think that since the book, as written, is about the most unfilmable book that I have ever read, that its themes are being watered down and borrowed by others. When I say unfilmable, I mean unfilmable. It makes Blood Meridian look like a cookie cutter storyboard, lol. However, although the book isn't for everyone, (it's sometimes written upside down, in coils, on post-it notes, there seem to be chapters taken out of other unrelated books just thrown in, it's like the book was written on acid at times and then with a very clear head at others) it's an incredible story and very cinematic. This movie, along with dozens of other projects over the last few years seem to really lean heavily on Danielewski's ideas and I was just wondering if anyone else out there who has read the book has noticed this as well.
-
It was released in Spain in January... 2010!
-
This film is to 'new' what Mitt Romney is to 'electable'.
-
don't put that shit on the Internet baby, but SHE DON'T LISTEN, NOW DO SHE!?!
-
I've seen this movie more than two years ago. Great Joe Dante flick by the way.

Explorers was good up until the point when they go to space.
by adeceasedfan
Terrible.
-
Doc Manhattan, you're getting that confused with The Ho. This is the Jenna Jameson doc.
-
Once it's exposed, what comes out might be described as evil. Also accompanied by foul smelling vapors...

"come face to face with their darkest fears" - Most cliched line ever?
by onezeroone
Can't remember a horror movie synopsis that didn't have this line.
