Smilin Jack Ruby takes a look at Jon Favreau's MADE
Hey folks, Harry here with our buddy... yours and mine... that's right, It's Smilin' Jack Ruby and this time he's found the script to Jon Favreau's penned MADE... which he is gonna be directing. He's got all the details for ya below, including some spoilers... but Favreau is the man, he wears the second coolest Hawaiian shirts... next to Father Geek that is... hehe... This script sounds so... (no way I'm saying it) This script sounds so fricking good. Jack's a lucky guy...
Gotta tell you, I hunt down a lot of scripts, but this one just took the
cake. Jon Favreau wrote this and will be directing it with Vince Vaughn and
himself playing the leads. Famke Janssen, Peter Falk, and Sean "Puffy"
Combs will also be in it and it's going to be hysterical.
"Made" is the story of two guys (Bobby - the Favreau character and Ricky -
the Vaughn character) out in L.A., both of them amateur boxers and both of
them full-time construction workers who bumble into something of a caper.
The guy who runs the construction site, Max (which I assume is the Peter
Falk role) is also a mobster who hires out strippers, including Bobby's
girlfriend, Jess, with whom he has a daughter. Bobby is Jess's driver and
really, really gets agitated when he watches bachelors think they can have
their way with his girl.
Anyway, Ricky is something of a moron and his character is one of the
reasons this movie is just going to be hysterical. When Max needs to send a
couple of guys to provide back-up on a small-time job in NYC, he sends Bobby
and Ricky. Of course, he has reservations about Ricky who can't even sweep
up right at the construction site and also probably stole a cleaning van,
but Bobby vouches for him. They set off.
I don't really want to give anything away past the first act. Needless to
say, Ricky has always wanted to be more involved in Max's "business," moreso
than just on the construction side of things. Once he gets his chance to
play gangster, everything goes nuts. Bobby's pretty relaxed about doing a
job for Max and doesn't think he's suddenly a play-ah. Well, Ricky goes the
opposite way and suddenly thinks that everything he ever heard in any movie,
tv-show, or rap song is the way he should act.
Okay, before all the fanboys in talkback land say that the last thing they
want to see is Vince Vaughn going around mugging like Don Corleone, you've
got it all wrong. You remember that moment in "Swingers" where the guys'
stupid punk friend pulls the gun on the skins? He thinks he's all big and
bad, but his friends think he's just an idiot and doesn't know the score.
"Made" is that kind of hilarious moment but on a much wider scale. I liked
"Swingers" and all the attitudes of the movie made me laugh. I think "Made"
is just as good if not funnier, especially because after "Swingers," Liman
did "Go" which I really wasn't fond of and it made me think the best part of
"Swingers" was the script. As Favreau is directing this as well as writing
it, I guess we'll get the chance to see, huh?
Yes, I agree that I sound like I'm Favreau's PR agent rattling on and on
about this script like the second coming. I'm just telling you that this
will be funny as hell - end of story. The adventure Bobby and Ricky go on
in NYC is insanely funny and just keeps upping the ante. Believe me, you
feel Bobby's pain as the trip wears on and all he wants is a nap. It's a
great and solid script with only one major problem that anyone who has read
the script will understand -
*SPOILERS*
Jess is too sympathetic in this draft and needs to be more of a bitch at the
beginning or the ending will deflate the pic a bit. After all that Bobby
goes through, I was hoping he'd get what he really wanted.
But, that's just my opinion and opinions are like assholes - everybody's got
one.

...And "Swingers" was absolutely one of the best films of the '90s. This one should be great: good script, the Favreau and Vaughn chemistry together again, and JF in the director's chair. Ther only drawback is the casting of Sean "I Stole all of Sting's Songs" Combs. I rank him and Courtney Love right at the top of my Least Favorite People in Show Business List. I hope his tremendous void of talent doesn't suck the rest of the film into it.

I, too, had a feeling that SWINGERS success was due mostly to Favreau's script, but when I saw GO, which I really liked, I knew that it was equal measures Jon and Doug. That said, I can't wait to get a copy of this script, which shouldn't be too hard 'cause it's shooting in my backyard (no, literally..... right behind the rusted out swingset.) Nice review, Jack!

what's with the no posts today ya slackers.

So cool, man. I've been waiting for more from him. Although I don't know why, Smilin' Jack, you thought the scene with Sue and the "House of Pain" was funny. Didn't seem funny until after the confrontation. Sounds like a great story, but I too, am skeptical of the use of Poof Daddy, other than a big selling point.

Swingers was the archetypal 90's film about male friendship. I laughed, I cried and Trent and Sue had me convinced that I was money by the end of the film. I agree that it was both Liman and Favreau that guided the success of Swingers, as I also enjoyed the radically different "Go". It's just kind of too bad that his Soprano's episode didn't come out closer to the time of production or release for the movie. His movies will always be esoteric and Woody Allen-ish, so I hope the mindless cranks don't sweep him under the rug if it isn't a $100 million lobotimized bonanza.
I'm outta here, this place is dead anyway! -
Is it just me, or does Vaughn just *look* the part of an idiot? then again, maybe i'm just biased because the man agreed to take aprt in that Psycho remake... what a load of shit that was. anyway, i'll repeat what others are saying, Favreau is so fucking cool that it makes my eyeballs sweat just thinking about it. it's my job to keep punk rock elite

...He was asking Chris about the gangster life because "his next project would take place in that world." Hey, it's true. By the way, "GO" is a great film. Witty script and good direction. Liman deserves much credit for both Go and Swingers. Movies don't direct themselves, kids.
-
Having met Doug Liman at a conference for student filmmakers, I can say with confidence that he was not the man that made "Swingers" money. He wouldn't know money if it walked up and drew a gun on him...
-
I've said this before and I'll say it again, I feel "Go" was for the kiddies who found "Pulp Fiction" confusing with its chronology shifts. Yep, there were people who had a hard time with that. "Go" is such a "Pulp Fiction"-LITE rip-off that after I saw it once I knew that I would never see it again. People may forever disagree with me, but I thought "Go" was just a complete joke.
-
I found the most useful part of Swingers was its accuracy in the portrayal of slacker party Hollywooders. When I came to LA, I was half-expecting Swingers, and it's pretty much what I got. You gotta keep your rap, bro, and you gotta be so money out here.

Excellant news! Swingers was a wonderful piece of work, which I would certainly include in a best of the nineties selection. The dialogue was perfect and it was acted out pretty naturally aswell. I liked the film so much that on the strength of it I bought the dvd of 'GO' before ever having already watched it, I was a bit disapointed, not that it isn't an o.k film just it doesn't deserve to be included in my collection with the others (Swingers included) So Im gonna try and take it back this weekend.
Now with 'Made' I have a new film to add to my coming attractions list which is looking fairly healthy for the next year or so. -
Our little babys all growns up. From the fat Gutter in PCU to Swingers to now hes doing alright.
-
If you had half a brain you would know that Jon Favreau had absolutely nothing to do with Go you slack-jawed meat smuggler. Think back before you talk back. They were both directed by Doug Liman which is the connection between the two movies, and, hence, the discussion between the two movies.
-
swingers is my personal favourite film of the nineties, probably of all time, and when i saw Go i wasnt dissapointed at all. nobody said it was gonna be anything like swingers, the only connection is the friggin' director! (by the way, i think liman is gonna be a force to be reckoned with in the future) Go has a pretty young cast, who all give good performances, so stop your friggin' moaning! i dont know why you lot are even comparing swingers and go.
-
you already suspected that. Asshole. "You have your reasons."
My asshair has more reason than you, you fuckhead.
