The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day’s name… is Horace!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

Now this shot won’t exactly set the world on fire and could very well have been taken just before production or just after production on The Monster Squad, one of my personal favorite ‘80s movies, but it’s still cool and it’s a lazy Sunday, so fuck it. Why not enjoy a nice close up shot of the Gillman suit, I say.

Of all the monsters made by Stan Winston Studios for the film, their version of the creature is my favorite. I know that director and co-writer Fred Dekker intended to use classic Universal Monster designs for the movie, but then Universal wouldn’t cooperate so they had to do fresh takes on all the monsters. The Wolfman turned out spectacularly, Frankie looks great, but it’s Gillman that really takes the cake. That goddamn thing looks real!

Thanks again to Pat Barnett for sending this one along… and is it just me or is that Dracula’s cape edging its way into frame there? Click to slightly enlargen.

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at

Tomorrow’s pic features a one-eyed icon.

ALL of the creatures look fantastic in this flick!

    by Dan

I'd love to see someone take those designs and make a really solid Universal monster gang and just scare the shit out of the kids and make us adults happy again. A testament to how cool those designs are is that the Lagoon creature was the least interesting of them all...Winston make him cool and kind of scary, the eyes sell it!

    by ghoulstock

God I love this movie. I know most people of my "generation" love The Goonies as their "kids on a crazy adventure" film, but The Monster Squad will always be my favorite. Personally, I hate The Goonies. The Monster Squad, however, kicks so much ass. The make-up work is fantastic. Shane Black's script has the perfect blend of horror and comedy, and he does a good job capturing how kids really talk---very foul and very un-PC. Dracula call's a little girl a bitch. Rudy is the coolest kid to ever wear penny loafers and fire a bow and arrow. And yes, I still tear up like an infant at the end when the little girl throws Frankenstein her doll.

I'm a child of the 80's without a doubt. I fondly remember Indy, Khan, Tron, Goonies, Poltergeist, ET, Black Hole, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Short Circuit, Weird Science, Explorers, Gremlins, The Last Starfighter, BTTF, John Huges, and god help me even Krull. Somehow, and still to this day, Monster Squad keeps flying under my radar. Guess I need to rectify this, but being 41 now, will it have any resonance for me?

    Steve Wang

    by Munro Kelly

It was Steve Wang's personal style he brought in painting the Creature and the Predator, both from 1987, when he worked for Winston. He later became a director and made Drive(97) and Guyver 1 & 2.

Re: "The name ... is 'Horace'."

    by ArmageddonProductions

Yeah, watch that scene again. In the very next shot, after Fat Kid says his line and racks the shotgun, you hear a FUCKING GUN SHOT, implying that he may or may not have shot the bully. In any event, wrap your mind around the concept of that scene even existing in a movie today.

    ghoulstock, I'm with you man

    by Bullet_time_Facehugger

I always loved this movie and HATED The Goonies. My folks took me to see the Goonies, and I distinctly remember not liking it. Saw Monster Squad on HBO not long after and fell in love with it.

  • I remember being grossed out by Corey Feldman kissing Martha Plimpton- YUCK!

    I don't know...

    by Sandy

That's neat, but I'm partial to the original Gillman suit. The Stan Winston one may have realistic skin "texture", but the face is what killed the realism for me. I don't like movie monsters that have mouths like that one with the teeth sticking out or mouths in general that stick out like that. They LOOK like a mask of some sort. It reminds me of the trolls in Elder Scrolls 5. The faces like that always look like a suit and kill the suspension of disbelief for me. To me, the one in Creature From The Black Lagoon looked pretty darn real considering when that film was made. I especially like how it looks when he's walking toward the camera and "breathing". That looks COOL. It's a shame Universal had to be a bunch of turds about it...that would have been awesome had they given them the go ahead to use the original designs. I suppose they didn't because of the nature of the film and they didn't want to go back down the route the studio did in the 40s with all the parody films they made with the monsters. I can't say I blame them. I'd like to see a SERIOUS film made with those original designs done by a modern make-up effects master.

I know Hot Topic ruined Goonies for most of you, however...

    by kindofabigdeal

Goonies > Monster Squad I love both flicks and screen Monster Squad every Halloween. But to be honest with myself I always loved Goonies more than Monster Squad. Something about it, maybe because that was the A-list movie and Monster Squad was B-list. Either way Monster Squad is perfect to screen with The Lost Boys.

    I can't believe Horace died :(

    by darthflagg

Wolfman's got nards! They definitely don't make kids movies like this anymore. Closest would be something like Monster House.

The creature design was kind of amazing. I always felt like it had just walked off the set of a hardcore horror film.
