GODZILLA Set To Make Landfall In 2014!!
The Kidd here...
We now know when Godzilla is set for another trip to the United States with Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. today announcing a May 16, 2014 release date for Gareth Edwards' vision for the iconic monster.
That'lll be 16 years since the last time Godzilla headed Stateside for a wide release by the time the new film rolls around - plenty of time for us to have forgotten Roland Emmerich's debacle. Hopefully this one ends on a much better note with better prospects for the future.
Oh, and it's expected to be released in 3-D, so now the watch begins as to whether or not Warner Bros. will give Edwards the green light to shoot in 3-D, or if we're looking at a post-conversion situation here.

I'm curious as to why Hollywood persists with remakes that usually only serve to denigrate the vision, energy and joy of the original?
by foles
I know Hollywood relies on the whole 'new generation' of movie goers to discover their 'reboot' 're-imagining' etc but thats a lot of money that could be realizing an original movie. Just seems like madness to me.

Ok, I'm sure some people do. But if 3D is what matters to you, and not the material of the movie itself, you probably shouldn't be reviewing films and focus on reviewing HD screens and 3D quality. I go to films to see the movie - to see the MOVIE, not the 3D the movie is presented in. 3D at its best should exist to immerse you in the film more - but it should not be the center of attention. You should forget you are even seeing 3D - just enjoy the movie. If the 3D is good enough, you arent even thinking about it - you're just there. Either way...I really dont give a tiny fuck. 3D is overrated. Needs to stop being trumpeted about so much. It's JUST a slighty different way of viewing the same movie. If the movie sucks, it sucks, regardless of how great the 3D is. If the 3D sucks, the movie can still be amazing. You see what I mean here? We can live just fine in 2D. In fact, I prefer it - glasses and crap are distracting, and so often the whole damn thing is too muted to even see properly.

I just really hope this guy respects the original concept as much as he appears to, and doesn't try to "make it his own thing and try something cool with it". "something cool" always equals "painful rape of what worked fine."

Hopes and Prayers for Taylor Kitsch's Swift Recovery, I agree with your disappointment with "Monsters,"
by ChaunceyGardiner
while personally what kept me from fully enjoying it weren't its visual limitations (which I thought were effectively balanced by a tremendous amount of tension built by the nuanced atmosphere and the engageing social situation created in Mexico by the creatures' appearance) but instead a lack of involvement with the main characters who felt more shallow than I would have expected. Their love story being one of dependence was not fully explored and instead replaced by a simple romantic formula. The moment that really worked though was the river boat encounter with the downed jet fighter. I think Hitchcock or Young Spielberg would have been proud of that one - minimal effects but with maximum dread. While the emotional story may not have been fully exploited, the overwhelming sense of barely-contained danger was fully present and more involveing than any of our characters (except for the Coyote, who I thought was understated, realistic, and ultimately made you feel as though society was barely hanging on as even the criminal elements there had to be careful and watch their steps). Very interesting in the exceptional opportunity for big-screen terror that Mr. Edwards has been given.

The problem with "Remakes" and "Re-Imaging" is the distortion of the original vision or changing the look of the characters, the Devlin/Emmerich Godzilla suffered greatly from this, "Van Helsing" suffered from this, I Want Fucking "Frankenstein to look like Boris Karloff Fucking Frankenstein! Same goes with the Wolfman, Dracula, etc,,, Please Hollywood, let the King of Monsters have his due and respect, let Godzilla LOOK like Fucking Godzilla! Thanks little buddies!
-
the fact that that's 16 years after the amazing Taco Bell tie-in Hank Azaria awesome fest makes me feel old. I'm not really a Godzilla fanboy, and I was just a nino at the time, but I thought/still think it's a fun movie. Didn't make me rethink life or anything, but after all - it's a movie about a giant monster running around a big city. I'm very much looking forward to checking out the MONSTERS guy's version though!
-
Bad yes, but it still has its moments, specifically ever scene with Jean Reno
-
The Roland Emmerich version was a complete conceptual disaster from the get-go. They had no idea what kind of movie they were making, even when they finished it. Is it a comedy? Romance? Tragedy? Horror? They had no fucking idea what they were trying to do. Idiots.

Emmerich's version - and judging by Edwards' debut, he seems competent enough to tackle the material. "Monsters" was okay, but you get the feeling with those pictures that you've been there before.
-
I can't believe no one has used that subject line yet. Me thinks after the 2,846 Tokyo power station being crushed under the giant atomic lizard's feet that Toho Studios could find a new trick in the bag? It would be cool if they could send Godzilla back in time to the age of the Samurai. Do it in black in white with pissed off gut ripping samurai like in a Akira Kurosawa film!

by castaway
I thought that was when Bay's version was coming out. Also, the final Hobbit movie is slated for about the same time as the X-Men First Class sequel in July 2014. Will any of these movies change dates or just butt heads in an all or nothing cinematic throwdown to see who will be crowned as the next franchise king? Will the public even care? I personally give an edge to the new Godzilla just to see what this new director has done with it. I wonder if moviegoers will even care especially with animated movies coming soon I thought people would think to be too old to be interesting (Mr. Peabody and Sherman from Dreamworks and Popeye from some other studio. Although, I did hear they got the guy that made Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack to do Popeye.)

Are you seriously trying to sell me a godzilla movie by explaining as a fucking iguana mutated by radiation!??!?!?! FUCK YOU EMM! Then you try to sell me a movie with a godzilla that DOESNT breathe fire!!!! FUCK YOU EMM! - and yes he never breathe fire, that scene in the alley was him blowing the explosion of the two cars slamming into each other at Broderick. Not once was there a scene of GODZILLA shooting a line of flame from his mouth destroying shit FUCK YOU EMM!!! Then you do a lame as ripoff of Jurrasic Parks raptors with Godzillas brood. AND A FINAL FUCK YOU TO YOU EMMERICH! Even Japan doesnt recognize your movie as a Godzilla movie.
-
...in the '98 flick was still a damn fine one as far as giant movie monsters go, even if it wasn't Godzilla. A pity that design was wasted by Devlin and Emmerich by stripping him of all his power and planting him in the midst of that bloated turkey; when the monster wasn't on screen, the movie was unbearable (but for Jean Reno). I'm on the fence about Gareth Edwards; "Monsters" was pretty underwhelming, so he'll have to raise the bar substantially in order to pull this off. Fingers crossed he's up to the task.

Throw in lots of Godzilla kills, Blood Charred flesh Bad Language and hopefully a boob shot. Make it R we do not need another PG-13 kids romp that sucks. ....sure,...it was a failure as a true "Godzilla" movie but the sfx were very good, especially for its time. Had some good laughs and a great 3rd act. Well....except for the raptor rip-off, that is. Definitely would love to see a real Godzilla movie with all the aspects we know and love about the character. 2014 can't come soon enuf.
-
if they can't go "man-in-suit" that is. At least then hopefully we won't have that staight to video-game console monster vibe.
-
You gots to have tittays.
-
EXCLUSIVE!
-
While it certainly wasn't perfect, his film was a serviceable giant monster movie in its own right, with a fairly decent giant monster. IMHO, it's when you add the NAME that it suffers (and thus why I can't really blame Ryuhei Kitamura for that 13s beatdown of it in 'Godzilla: Final Wars'). So refresh my memory: was the name specifically Emmerich's doing, or did some Suit at Columbia-TriStar insist on the name as a cash grab?
-
the end result is the same, lame pop up book/viewfinder effects. not to mention the "effect" of it wears off and isn't really noticeable anymore after about 15-20mins. Avatar is the only movie i purposely chose the 3D version of, the rest that i saw that way were outta my hands, its all the theaters had. but it all looked the same. i'm just surprised they still push it so hard, there are so many recent movies that failed financially big time and they were in 3D. that means they would have made even less money in 2D only. its time to move on from that gimmick. people in the 50s/60s were forgiven as it was new....but those in the 80s realized how retarded it was and let it die....it should stay dead. and seriously, why charge more? do the few B&W movies they make charge less because there's no color?...nope, so this is just as pointless. i mean its gotten to the point even the lame ass cheap theaters can do 3D and they dont charge more than the 2D counterparts. the bigger chains should follow through if they're that obsessed with showing them.
-
NOW! This has to get the blessingof the fans... I actually think that the 98 creature is a great design, it just ISN'T Godzilla... It not only didn't look like godzilla, it did not act like him or posses the same powers. I always wondered what a more lizard like or dino like version would be. BUT once I saw it, I hated it. It lacked anything supernatural, it became ordinary. They have to make sure that godzilla keeps his essesnce and power. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE SOME CONCEPT ART!

i'm getting tired of every talentless dipstick pointing out (repeatedly / vulgarly / non-grammatically) just how bad his movie was. no other giant monsters! it wasn't godzilla vs ______. it was godzilla. watch the original. either version (japanese or american re-edit). it was godzilla vs humanity. and humanity got their @$$3$ kicked. no other giant monster. just like the title said. no sumo wrestler in a fat suit! yup. just like emmerich told us to expect. a more realistic-looking version of a giant lizard. no flaming breath! no. i'll grant you that. but he did (more realistically) cause several car-fires by breathing on groups of vehicles. ya know, when i go to the movies it's to be entertained. not to look for something to criticise. i may have movie images in my head when i think about how i'd make a movie, but i KNOW i'm not as talented as these individuals. hell, even michael bay makes better movies than i could. even better than you could. so if you think YOU could do better, then fire up your camera. make me look foolish. make a better movie than _____. frankly, until then, you're fulla $h!t.

The critical thing - the absolute, most critical thing - is that Godzilla must be invulnerable to conventional weapons.
by FluffyUnbound
Forget everything else Emmerich did wrong. None of that other shit really mattered. THE CRITICAL thing he got wrong is that bullets and missiles hurt Godzilla, so Godzilla had to run away and hide. That wrecks Godzilla. After 50 years of environmentalism and animal rights activism, any animal that can be killed by bullets is automatically a victim. As soon as Godzilla could be hurt, the Emmerich movie turned into a Sunday morning hunting show. And Godzilla turned into a spotted owl. And I'm a right wing libertarian a-hole, and EVEN I can't enjoy a movie where people are trying to kill Godzilla the scared spotted owl. Godzilla has to be an unstoppable force of nature who is here to destroy us fucking all. He's either that, or he's nothing. He has to laugh at all our attempts to hurt him or stop him and stomp our fucking guts out. The CLOVERFIELD folks got that part absolutely right.
