An Office Vantage Point Look At TRAFFIC, the Soderbergh film shooting now!

Published at:  May 02, 2000 2:13:28 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here.... While you may assume that the following report came from a mere office worker... little do her officemates suspect that lil Darcy, that innocent rear window film watcher secretly drives a hot as hell car in the Monte Carlo rally every year and races with sometime love, Dean Jones in his amazing love bug. Ironic isn't it that out her window should be... TRAFFIC, hmmmm.... coincedence... I think not. It was meant that someone who had spent their entire life weaving in and out of Traffic be the first person on AICN to reveal the secrets of the TRAFFIC... Take it away, Diane Darcy....

Esteemed Head Geek,

This is probably old news to people who work in the film business, but
Steven Soderbergh has been shooting his new film, Traffic, in downtown San
Diego for the past several days. He has shut down a major street and
commandeered a parking lot in order to shoot a few scenes involving the actor
Luis Guzman. Speaking as a layperson who has never before seen a movie being
shot, things seem to be moving along quite efficiently. POSSIBLE SPOILER
ALERT.

Earlier today, the film crew shot several takes of a scene during which
Guzman fled from a sniper who was firing shots from a nearby roof. Late this
afternoon, they blew up a car. This appeared to be quite a complicated
scene, involving other cars and a pedestrian passing by during the explosion;
those of us watching from nearby offices were worried that Soderbergh
wouldn't manage to finish the scene before the sun went down, but, he made
it.

END OF (POSSIBLE) SPOILER.

I've always envisioned movie directors as crazed despots; the thing that
my office mates and I found amazing was how calm Soderbergh (or the guy we
took to be Soderbergh) seemed to be. (Of course, we were judging on body
language seen from a distance.) The guy in question just seemed incredibly
calm and laid-back about the whole thing, even as the sun crept lower and
lower in the sky.

A final note: no sign of Michael Douglas or (much to the disappointment
of my male coworkers) Catherine Zeta-Jones. That was just fine by me,
because I think that the sight of the two of them making out would be even
more disgusting in person than it is when seen on TV.

I think that this production will be moving on to Mexico soon, but if I
see or hear anything new, I'll pass it along.

Regards,

Diane Darcy

Kafka, schizopolous, the underneath, gray's anatomy, king of the hill, E.B., and the upcoming remake of the ultra-cool oceans 11. I'd be willing to bet that schizopolous is the best film he will ever make, followed closely by kafka.
