Well Played - The New WRECK-IT RALPH Trailer Is Here!!
The Kidd here...
If you've ever picked up a video game controller in your life, you should have a special appreciation for the world that lives inside WRECK-IT RALPH. All eras of video gaming are represented, and while it is cool to see the evolution of that industry in the graphic capabilities of those games, there's a special spot in my heart for seeing characters from Q-Bert and Pac-Man and Street Fighter and Super Mario Bros. all congregating in one location.
Disney has debuted a new trailer for WRECK-IT RALPH today (via Yahoo!), and with plenty of new jokes (and a deeper look at the bad guy support group), it looks like we've got a pretty sound animated film heading our way in November. I could do without some of the cheap potty humor, aimed at getting laughs from younger audiences, because I feel like this material is above that... but I guess this is how The Mouse reconciles having something for everyone.

I'm really curious if there are any companies that refused to let their characters appear in this movie, and if ...
by Royston Lodge
... they're kicking themselves now.
-
"I am bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There is no one I'd rather be than me."<p> I hate to be that guy, but this is kinda a shitty message to send the kids. "It's okay to be a scumbag kids, as long as you're YOU. You can be lazy, mean, destructive, but it's what makes you special."<p> I know it's handled in a humorous way in the movie, but the fucking HERO is a bad guy whose job is to BREAK STUFF. Moral ambiguity FTW!
-
I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way.
-
How on earth did disney get permission for all these characters? I mean really, talk about copyright nightmare, combined with companies, especially nintendo, being ferociously protective of their IP. On top of that, DIsney, the most nazi company about their characters and IP this side of LucasArts going around and asking to pay to use other companies characters instead of encouraging their people to make "noticeably similar but legally different" characters to save money? Wow. Seriously, I'm kind of shocked. Anyone have any way of explaining this?
-
Love Pixar!
-
Apparently Nintendo wanted an ass load of money to get him to appear, so they had to make do with Bowser.
-
...considering how many films (books, TV episodes, etc.) revolve around the basic idea of people trying to be something they're not and occasionally being successful just being themselves (and/or sometimes growing as a person as a result of the attempt to be something they're not), I'm inclined to give the message as recited a pass. It fits perfectly, IMO. In that respect, actually, this movie looks rather delightfully...retro. And damn I hope there's a Sinistar joke.
-
They probably just did it the same way they did "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". And just like that film (which didn't feature any of the Popeye characters) you've got a few holdouts (no Mario, no Pac-Man, Mortal Kombat characters replaced with similar substitutes, etc.).
-
...no offense, but kids are sophisticated enough not to take life lessons from a chant being done by the bad guys they beat in the video games they play. Seriously, have some of your own, spend some time watering them, little bit of kid food, weed out a particularly weedy companion every once in awhile...you'll be surprised at how amazingly perceptive and sophisticated they are. Given the opinion you just expressed I'd say they exceed your current expectations by a magnitude of about one hundred.

muaddibuh: What are your thoughts on the "Fish are friends, not food chant"?
by kindofabigdeal
Does that encourage kids to not eat their fishsticks? BTW, do you like fishsticks? If you do, your a gay fish.
-
Me go see it . . .
-
I think, if you pay attention to the trailer, that the message is that even though Ralph's purpose is to be the "bad guy" he is necessary to the people in his game. When Ralph's not around to wreck the place the game is then in true jeopardy because it isn't complete and is in danger of being unplugged. The message is that even though you might feel like the entire world is against you and you'd like to take off sometimes you might just be more important to those around you than even you or they know.

What a turn off

Re: Roger Rabbit...Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse sharing the same scene is pretty amazing when you think about it.

Looney Tunes was named, after all, as a response to Disney's Silly Symphonies cartoons.

South Park continuously prove that it's some of the best form of funny.. Look no further than PeePee's Waterpark and Bono is a number 2
-
Although the sound effects instantly take me back, I'm not sure it's going to manage to be Roger Rabbit ... it seems to be missing a layer of deapth to pull that off.

by Knuckleface
Anyone else get the impression that the movie could fall apart in Act II?

Uwe Boll said videogame intellectual properties are undervalued by the industry
by Knuckleface
The video game industry sells their intellectual properties for dirt cheap prices. They don't seem to have a head for it. BTW - if Earthworm Jim isn't in it, the movie is dead to me.
-
Um... "the material" is an animated film about video game characters jumping in and out of video games. It's not exactly War and Peace.
-
Sept. 12, 2012, 2 p.m. CST
I think Roger Rabbit succeeded BECAUSE of the human interaction. It gave the characters someone to interact with beside other animated characters, and it
by openthepodbaydoorshal
helped define their social strata. This looks like fun, but it won't have the same resonance. And Disney? A Blu Ray Roger Rabbit anytime soon, huh?

Q-bert. His career never really took off after the video game thing ended.
by Raptor Jesus
It's a damn shame it's 2012 and I can't play Q-bert on my Win7 PC.
-
Or maybe I'm just excited for John C. Reilly
-
I think this movie is going to be absolutely fantastic. I was just making a comment that there are very few movies anymore, particularly children's movies, in which the good guys are GOOD, and the bad guys are BAD. You nearly always have sympathy for the bad guy, and he always has motivations that are understandable, and usually fairly reasonable, until the Good Guy becomes a jerk for trying to stop the Bad Guy. You can still make a good movie of Good vs. Evil, folks.
-
Normally this bothers me, but it really doesn't bother me since its Sarah (I wrote a book about bedwetting) Silverman who did the potty reference.
-
not letting my kids near em. what a creativity killer
-
I am looking forward to this movie quite a bit and I agree that the message you perceive is not a good one for kids, but my impression (from the trailer) is that the actual message is about trying to be good, even if you've been told your whole life that you need to be bad. I see the chant as a bit of brainwashing that Ralph is going to ultimately resist, since doing good is more important than adhering to what your family tells you to do.
-

So, is it all arcade characters, or are we gonna get some Atari 2600 references?
by Royston Lodge
Kinda looks like Bowser's the only console-only character.
-
I know Mario can't be involved, but I am still hoping that Ralph ends up in Mario Kart... or Mortal Kombat
-
Sept. 12, 2012, 2:46 p.m. CST
I'd also like to see some of the more fucked-up characters.
by Royston Lodge
Like CATS from Zero Wing, for example. Or Cyborg Hitler from Wolfenstein. Or the Lemmings. Or Duke Nuke'Em (voiced by Bruce Campbell, of course) Or the giant Cervix Monster from Earthbound.
-
Was that green monster from anything special? The one I'm most surprised to see in that bunch is Kano just because he comes from a game that is not considered appropriate for kids.
-

It encourages kids to realize THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE what their circumstances might...
by King Conan
make them THINK they have to be, i.e. bad, liar, drug addict etc. Ralph's entire journey is going to show kids you can always make YOUR OWN choices and ultimately be a good person or hero. As they say, it's not how you START but how you FINISH.
-
I mean I guess he's the lord of it all in the end, but Wreck-it Ralph could quite possibly show up Pixar's offering. Brilliant.

I don't mind potty humor - some of the greatest comedians did blue material
by atlatl
Plus it's a kids movie after all - poop jokes are hilariously universal to kids. My 3 year old nephew did a complete non-sequitar by randomly responding with "poop" everytime I quizzed him - and we found ourselves laughing hysterically. Sometimes it's ok to laugh at stupid shit. As long as the movie overall isn't dumbed down and condescending, I don't mind a little bit of idiot humor in there. Nothings worse than hearing a 40 year old man child getting all pissy about how there is childish humor in a kids movie as if he expected the movie's writers to have written the movie specifically to suit his tastes. Grow up!
-
When Nintendos first came out, lots of the games were in cabinets at 7-11s and whatnot. You could usually play Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, maybe a few more.

Ahh yes...even with the cornballs coming out of Disney's ass with most everything they touch, this has great, highly nostalgic appeal to me. Just seeing that shot of the coily snake from Q-bert and that little fireball guy with the sign that read "Will NPC in FPS for food" was just hilarious on many levels. Highly looking forward to this.... ... West of house. You are standing in an open field, west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here. >

Beacuse I saw Root Beer Tapper in it gets a must see from me.
by TallScott
God I loved that game! Also spotted dig dug and frogger. If they have a cameo from Crazy Climber and/or Mr Do then ill love this movie forever no matter how bad it is. ( Guess where i spent my youth lol )
-
at the end of the trailer. And "a story for anyone who ever needed a restart on life", yeah that made my 40 year old ass a little teary. F Pixar in the ass, go Wreck-It Ralph!!!
-
Ticket sold. Of course I have no choice in the matter because my kids would kill me otherwise. Not complaining, looks like a winner.
-
It's true. I've raised a 7 yr old zombie who would spend every waking minute playing video games if he was allowed. He's obsessed. It's my fault.

While it looks like a fun great film, i suspect the video game cameos and references will only play a small percentage of the running time.
by Sean
And truthfully for me and i imagine for a lot of others, it really is the big drawcard of this film...Hey look! There's Sonic! Alex Kidd, etc, etc. I could watch a whole film based on the support group...but i aint gonna get that. ...Sounds shallow and prejudgmental i know. Regardless, i'll go check it out.
-
for some reason disney decided that because i don't live in the us i've got to wait a few more months to see the movie. the uk release date is in February. it's like they want people to pirate the movie. because with a 3 month delay it's going to get pirated to hell. disney are frakking idiots.

Bah, needs PROPER videogame characters like Hungry Horace, Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy
by i_got_worms
I spit on those 16-bit sprites... 8-bit all the way, I say
-
That is all
-
That line... gotta admit, made me chuckle. Anyone else think that a Ready Player One movie would be a possibility after this one, or would it seem too rip-offish?
-
Hit a guy with glasses is classic, but I'm yearning for a cameo from Alex Kidd. It all looks good, and a "smack yourself in the head why didn't I think of it before?" premise.
-
Opening the small mailbox reveals a leaflet. > [as an aside...allow me to guess that a potential villain of this movie could be none other than the grandfather of all video game characters...... PONG yep, a giant white cube that has been beaten between player paddles for so long that he's gone insane...think V-ger but funny...even if not, and even if a little predictable...it would be fun]
-
Only Arcade game characters where used. (so you're not going to get stuff from Doom, EWJ, Leeroy Jenkins etc) Who knows and it takes off and does well maybe you'll see stuff like that in upcoming sequels when Fix it Felix JR is ported to home consoles or in the downloadable world? Although I think if there is a sequel it will stay in the Arcade world and there will be a search for Fix it Felix Father, Fix It Felix Sr.
