The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day was not built to keep anything out. It was built to keep something… in.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
We’re going kind of obscure today. As a horror freak growing up I was aware of this film because of the VHS cover, but as I became a bigger film nerd I also became aware of its pedigree. In the early ‘80s Michael Mann directed a Nazi horror film starring Ian McKellen, Scott Glenn, Jurgen Prochnow and Gabriel Byrne called The Keep.
I caught up with it rather late, only in the last 5 or 6 years, but you can hardly blame me since it didn’t hit DVD thanks to some kind of copyright silliness regarding Tangerine Dream’s score, which seems to be owned by a few different people and thus this early fantasy/horror tale by Michael Mann is hard to come by.
Personally, I don’t think the movie quite lives up to the thought of what a movie with all those elements could be, but its definitely worth a visit if you stumble upon a VHS or if, god forbid, we eventually get it on DVD or Blu-Ray.
Today’s image is a make up shot of Molasar (think of him as kind of Golem) from the guys in the PEG. Click to enlargen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
Tomorrow’s pic is coming down with a cold. Is there a doctor in the house?

The Keep is of interest mainly as a curiosity for me.
by A_Banned_Apart
The cast and the director made it worth a look.
-
From what I remember, it was butchered by the studio.
-
Loved the first act - such dreamy atmosphere. Got pretty sloppy by the end, but still, I'm glad to have caught it. I never knew there was a rights issue, but maybe it will pop up on Netflix again.

and it is weird as hell. http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/The_Keep/70153886?trkid=2361637

Fucking The Keep. Tired of the "rumors" of the Director's Cut dvd.
by Quake II
I've been hearing about a Michael Mann director's cut The Keep coming out on dvd for the past decade. The fact is, IF this movie is ever relased on dvd or Blu, it will be the bare bones theatrical cut straight from the laserdisc. Michael Mann and Paramount want nothing to do with this movie and we will NEVER see The Keep the way it was intended. I heard that the missing footage was thrown away in the 1980's. And YES, I have a dvd laserdisc burn of this film and it looks/sounds pretty great.
-
If I remember correctly, there's a scene where a soldier sticks his head through a small passage, and some energy thingie decapitates him. Scared me shitless. If that's the same movie. I think it is.
-
...and they're two very different things. I think this was definitely a very low-budget movie but I remember it being very surreal and the Tangerine Dream soundtrack really added to that element. ??Pseudo?? Out.
-
I remember there was a "Making of" show when it was released. One of the movies they covered was The Keep. I thought it looked interesting because of the man-in-suit.... But when I saw the movie (finally) a few months back he was barely in it. What gives? Screw it, this movie blew.

the book wasn't much cop either. It has an enduring cult following, but the the plot was just absurd. I actually can't believe the director of "Thief" went onto make this. Still, every great artist can produce a turkey at some stage in their career.
-
The Keep to Michael Mann is what Legend is to Ridley Scott. A film that had the director released the film he WANTED to release, would've been light-years better than what studio did to the film. Mann's original version of The Keep ran THREE AND A HALF HOURS. It was whittled down to 90 minutes. Do the math. That is less than HALF his intended film. If you look at his subsequent films, he seldom has the gaps in logic and continuity and story coherence that plague The Keep. What IS there, though, is a tremendous sense of atmosphere, dread, and visual treat (the Nazi's entrance into the Carpathian Alp village still is among the best sequences he has ever filmed, IMO). Granted, he took HUGE liberties with the book, turning Molasar from a vampire into a horrifying monster, but so much of the subtext of the novel which was missing was NOT Scott's fault, but Paramount's. Also, re: the music and the hold up for a DVD release, that's because the members of Tangerine Dream are NOTORIOUS for in-fighting among band members past and present (the line up has changed about 100 times) which means getting the then-members to agree on the rights to the music is impossible. Plus, Mann and Paramount are likely still at odds over the debacle and F Paul Wilson will NEVER stop being pissed at both at them for what he sees as a hatchet job on his book. Sad, because a director's cut with even just 30 more minutes of footage would greatly improve the choppy nature of the film's flow as well as fill in MANY gaps in the story, such as the whole nature of Scott Glenn's character, Glaeken.

Golems are linked to Jewish folklore. Most likely the story above is referring to the silent era film Der Golem, which is summed up fairly well on Wikipedia: Der Golem is a 1915 silent horror film written and directed by Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen. The film is an original work inspired by ancient Jewish legend. It is the first of three Golem films by Wegener, the others being The Golem and the Dancing Girl (1917) and The Golem: How He Came into the World (1920). In modern times, an antique dealer (Henrik Galeen) finds a golem (Paul Wegener), a clay statue brought to life by a Rabbi four centuries earlier. The dealer resurrects the golem to use him as a servant, but the golem falls in love with the dealer's wife. As she does not return his love, the golem turns to a series of murders. So, there ya go.... that is what a golem is....

I will add my voice to those who really liked the book and were really dissapointed by this movie.
by Ingeld
I remember going with a group of friends. I was the only one who read the book and was reallying talking it up--in fact talked them into going. Afterwards, I had to explain to them that the book was really better. This came before the Highlander series, and I always thought that the series ripped this off.

by Bullet_time_Facehugger
...from a bootleg DVDr of the laserdisc release. Its not a great movie by any means, but the performances are interesting, especially the guy who plays Molasar, Michael Carter, who also played Bib Fortuna in Return Of The Jedi. I found the voice he uses for Molasar, if in fact that is his real voice and he's not dubbed over, to be quite horrifying.

That old Nickelodeon show and Leonard Nimoy vehicle had an episode about it (as mentioned earlier in this talkback). I remember Nimoy making it sound like it would be really creepy when he introduced the bit. And the rubber monster with glowing eyes (and mouth?) was creepy. I was intrigued, but wouldn't see it for about 20 years until I watched it on Netflix about a year ago. Ugh, what a drag. I could have missed it for another 20 years. And the talent involved, too... oh well. Incidentally, reflecting on it, that was not a movie for kids, and I recall on more than one occasion "Lights, Camera, Action!" highlighted the effects for several rated R flicks. I don't know if the idea was the show was for "older kids" or they just assumed a bunch of parents are going to take their 8-year-olds to "The Keep" or if they just figured that special effect junkies (like myself) would have watched how they do the effects for any old movie, whether it was kid-friendly or not. (Other episodes I recall: "Star Trek III", "Rock and Rule", and Superman walks through fire)

F. Paul Wilson is one of my favorite adventure/horror novelists. Read his Adversary/Repairman Jack Series (The Keep being the first of which), you won't be sorry. Repairman Jack makes the Equalizer look like a pansy!

The Keep is one of those favorites that stay crammed into the back of my head and never really go away. The Bermuda Depths is even moreso!!!! Would love to see a BTS of that one too..... Just sayin'

...weird movies that's actually quite terrible, narratively speaking, but has so much eerie atmosphere and cool visuals that it's compelling to watch. I'd rather have ten ambitious, interesting failures like The Keep than one more of those slick, by-the-book, focus-group-tailored pieces of shit Hollywood calls horror these days.
-
Ah, are you also one of those impressionable souls whose mind was forever stamped by ' that big turtle movie ' ? Look around the net -- there's LOADS of us.
-
I'm not sure there are interesting, creative failures anymore. People look back at times past, see some cheesiness, and write everything off. But things these days fail even worse, by not trying in the first place.
-
*The Keep is one of those... by docpazuzu ...weird movies that's actually quite terrible, narratively speaking, but has so much eerie atmosphere and cool visuals that it's compelling to watch. I'd rather have ten ambitious, interesting failures like The Keep than one more of those slick, by-the-book, focus-group-tailored pieces of shit Hollywood calls horror these days.* Doc, sounds like you're describing PROMETHEUS?
-
It's quite an unique movie. And it has a cast to die for.
-
Ha! I see what you did there. However. The failings of The Keep are in large part due to the studio's intervention in the editing and the creative curbing of Michael Mann. Ridley Scott has no such excuse.
-
That is not at all like "Prometheus". "Prometheus" is a clear example of what's wrong with today's Holywood type movies. "Prometheus" is not an interesting failure, it's just a failure, a particulary uninteresting one at that. That crap will be forgotten by the end of the year.
-
I blame the failure of "Promethus" on Ridley Scott. on nhis side, he did well, the presentation side, specially the visuals. for me is more then evident that despite all was said, Scott was nothing but a jobber for "Promethus" ,and his name was used for marketing purposes. He has less to do with the movie then we are lead to believe. The whole blame for the movie's failings rest on Damon Lindelof's head, the silly boy who thinks he's so smart because he shoves basic illiterate notions of faith in every fucking thing he creates and thinks so clever for doing so, and the unimaginably terrible plotting and character he wrote that seems like something out of the worst slasher movies from the 80s. Ridley Scott can still go scott free form "Prometheus", but Lindelof not so much. Lindelof owes me money, time and pacience, and i owe him a punch in the face. I want to break his fucking glasses for what he did to my beloved Alien series.
-
Nobody loves Ridley Scott's good movies more than I do, but that's not enough to let him off the hook for Prometheus. The guy's got too much clout, too much talent, and too much world-building savvy to allow himself to be bullied by Fox and/or Lindelof. He sold out, as simple as that, and snoozed his way though the movie. Prometheus was a crushing disappointment.
-
I agree with you that Ridley Scott sold out for "Prometheus". He was a hire dhand, he did what was told to do, allowed his name used for promotion value, and grabbed the paycheck and went his merry way. But if you read between the lines and pay attention to the dynamic that existe during production and -pre-release of the movie, you can tell that the movie was realy Lindelof's show. It's easy to tell that Fox was gromming Lindelof to be the movie's hero. As the movie closed to release, the focus went from -Ridley Scott's return to the alien saga to the writer of "Lost". Lindelof was Fox's man. It's quite clear to me that there was a pass the torch thing going on about Prometheus, from Ridley scott to young blood Lindelof. And it all backfired spectaculary because the things the movie was criticised was Lindelof's department while the things the movie was praised was Ridley's. The studio seemed to wised upon the fact, because the talk of a possible sequel, if it ever gets made, still has Ridley Scott onboard but Lindelof is out. Behind the nice talk, it's obvious Fox lays the blame on Lindelof (and rightly so), and the sequel will happen without him. Too bad he had been there since the begining.

can't be much worse than PUBLIC ENEMIES or MIAMI VICE or
by Stifler's Mom
Michael Mann = overrated
-
Anybody who thinks "Public Enemies" is a bad movie has issues. How can that movie be mistaken for a bad movie? How's that posssible? The final scene with Marion Cotillard and Stephen Lang alone would make it a good movie on it's own strenghs.
-
Molosar is Rasalom backwards which is his revealed name in the F.Paul Wilson books. He seems to take the form that causes the most fear, which he feeds on. In the Tomb it was a vampire type being since that is what the people of the area in the book were most fearful of.
-
Fair enough. But i don't think boring alone makes a bad movie. Boring is just boring. Now, boring and stupid, that's a bad movie alright.
-
...was that Mann used T.Dream music that he wasn't supposed to. A dvd/bd release will have to pay out to record companies. Hence no profit.
-
Well it's September and you're still talking about it. Better be forgetting it soon. Just saying. I blame Prometheus for giving me a joyous evening at the movies. I hate when that happens. As for The Keep, watched it at a friend's house on Netflix. Fell asleep. Sounds like I didn't miss anything.

When is Michael Mann ever going to return to sci-fi/fantasy!?
by Raymar
-
I saw it when it first came out and thought it was crap. I also saw Legend opening night and was blown away and knew it would find it's place eventually as it did. And everyone seems to forget that Legend is a live version of a FAIRY TALE. But The Keep was handed to the wrong director. Mann is not the man for this. This is a horror movie done Miami Vice style. They even had a problem with the suit on viewing a cut which is why they brought VCE to save this turkey of a suit. The fact is that this could have been a magnificently scarry gotic film handed to the right director. Scott would have made something truly epic with this.

There's something very wrong with the 69 position. While the lady sits on the man's face, she sucks his lulla, so thats nice, but while he eats her choot his nose is right up in her anus. So then he's smelling all her poo and her farts. Tooooooo stinky. It might work better if hes on top.

Much like DUNE, what is there to figure out about THE KEEP?
by Monroville
I can understand if you don't like the 80's light show and all, but personally I love the movie. First saw this on HBO in the late 1980's, and then again in the mid 1990's when it was released widescreen on laserdisc (I don't buy the whole "music rights" bit, as I've heard that Mann personally saw to having the dvds Paramount had pressed and ready to go back in November of 2003 warehoused. Yep, Michael Mann is that kind of an asshole. I mean he DID release 3 definitive director cuts of LAST OF THE MOHICANS. Or was that 4?). Anyways, it goes like this: Nazis go to south eastern Europe and stumble upon ancient fortress, which turns out to be more like an ancient prison. Nazi soldiers unleash the evil energy being trapped underneath which (like the Cenobites in HELLRAISER or GHOST RIDER) feeds off of fear and one's soul. Scott Glenn (who I never really knew his character's name until reading the book and looking at the credits, though I do believe someone calls him by his name later in the movie) is activated, as he is the prison's guardian, and travels to watch over and re-imprison Molasar if need be. What is interesting about the movie is how Mann incorporates different myths into one - the vampire legend of possession and draining of one's life force, as well as the ability to manipulate the minds of men and women (both Glaeken and Molasar do this, to the daughter and the father respectively). Earlier one mentioned that the daugher (I forgot the actress' name) was nude in a sex scene. One could still consider it rape, as Glaeken exerted his influence over her much like how Chris Lee did upon his victims. Now I can see how some would hate the aspect of transforming Glaeken and Molasar into (in essence) "aliens" trapped on Earth, with humans coming up with their own interpretations of what they are in the form of the myths of golems and vampires. As for myself, having come off of OUTER LIMITS, TWILIGHT ZONE, STAR TREK and the rest, I thought it was a novel approach. Maybe the execution could have been done better, but like Doc Pazuzu and others have stated, I would take 100 THE KEEPS over any of the drivel like THE RING remake on up to today.

I saw the film first when I was a teenager, taped it of the TV when it was shown on Alex Cox's Moviedrome (one of the best film shows ever). The film of The Keep instantly struck a cord with me and made a big impression. The style and atmosphere, the smoke/mist effects are incredible. Years later I read the book, and I loved it. It's very different from the film and Rasalom (Molasar) is shown very differently. But, I just can't hate on the film because it made such a strong impression upon me. It still does.
-
But i remember it as being super-fucking atmospheric. There was a lot of other mumbo-jumbo and i think in the end it was a bit of a train wreck but those early scenes right up to where they discover the giant room inside were AWESOME.

It needs the full BR treatment pronto.

"The idea to turn the movie into a religious allegory was Lindelof's idea and Scott went with it without any second thought." Exactly. Because Ridley Scott was nothing more then just an hired hand in the movie. An hired hand with pedigree. It's quite obvious to me that Scott no longer feels like fighting the studios like he used to when he was younger and when he made "Alien" and "Blade Runner". He's an old man now, he has a more cool demeneur to him, and he has a more conciliatory attitude nowdays. Like many filmmakers, he pulls the "i do one for you,and you do one for me later" thing. He's far more political nowdays. Damon Lindelof was the studio's golden boy on "Prometheus", and that's every easy to figure out. Fortunatly, the golden boy proved to be a bust. As if that come as a suprise for anybody who don't measure movies or TV shows just on box office alone.
-
I'm sorry, you are right. "Prometheus" will not be forgotten by the end of the year. No, "Prometheus" is already forgotten. Only obsessive fools like me can still remember that movie existed. The rest of the world has moved on. Thank you for the oportunity for correction.

I guess i'm a fool for letting things like mood, well realised world building, good actor performances, cool dialogues and thematic ambition sway me over such things as perceived plot holes and shaky storytelling. I guess i must have a fantastic ability to fill in the gaps, because i do not feel at all the movie has narrative gaps to speak of that impossibilitated me to follow the narrative. I guess i'm pretty good in deducing the inbetweens of each scene, maybe i just invented all that shit. I'm such a frakking fool for liking this movie! When will i ever learn?
-
Ya I definitely haven't seen the movie then. lol

Hey asimov/scirocco, "impossibilitated" isn't a word

When will you ever learn?

The Keep is a magnificent failure, full of crazy shots, great atmosphere, freaky sfx and one of the greatest film scores ever. Just listen to the cue when Glaeken takes the ship from Piraeus to Constanza, absolutely beautiful.
Interestingly, William Friedkin said if he had known of the existance of Tangerine Dream when he was shooting The Exorcist then he would have hired them to score the film. He got them onboard for Sorcerer, which is another amazing score.
This film reeks of art, whereas crap like Prometheus and JJ's Star Wreck reek of corporations screwing fans and making millions.

Kwisa, thanks for the comliment but its totally undeserved - I think you actually meant to commend the good Dr Pazuzu... I'm one of those tasteless plebs that somehow enjoyed PROMETHEUS... sorry!
-
*I guess i'm a fool for letting things like mood, well realised world building, good actor performances, cool dialogues and thematic ambition sway me over such things as perceived plot holes and shaky storytelling* Scirocco Um... I have to ask again - are you describing THE KEEP or PROMETHEUS?
-
Add me to the list of people who have read F. Paul Wilson's book and prefer that version, but for me the book helped me appreciate what was there in the movie. Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher is laughable, but the trailer for that movie has me thinking he'd do really well as Repairman Jack.

not sure why DVD had a release issue. It came out on betamax and was widely distributed on that format all over the country.

The end

No, the word does not exist, but it was the right one.
-
How can there be any doubt? "Promehteus" is the one that's shitty and retard, with only visuals as the onoly thing worth praising. So, really, i don't understand your confusion. You actually think there is thematic ambition in "Prometheus"? Have you ever seen a really intelligent movie before? And i don't even mean the art-house ones, there's quite a few of those in the mainstream as well. "Prometheus" is like an idiot's idea of what intelligent storytelling might be like, and failing epically.

All hangovers come to pass, eventually.

I dare say, he's the Bethoven of modern days. He's that good.
-
Much of it is from Logos Live (1982). Still holds up really well thirty years on. TD were at their peak around then. By the late 80s it was all Cubase-constructed elevator music.
-
Not likely. There's only one Vangelis. TD usually had three members. They do different styles of music. I like both. I think Vangelis's creative heights are above those of TD, though.

Tangerine Dream did made sweet music, specially for movies.
by albert comin
But their score for the abominable american version of "Legend" is best forgotten. "Legend" works with Jerry Goldsmith's score and nothing else.
-
But you forget that Vangelis is constantly allied with Demis Roussos (since their time in Aphrodite's Child) and Jon Anderson of Yes (the various Jon & Vangelis albuns). So Vangelis would not be alone. And you really what to piss off Demis Roussos? He would hulk out on the Tangerine Dream boys! Beware the Roussos! And Jon has that mightly high tones of his he would bust the ears of the Tangerine guys to jelly. All Vangelis would need to was sweeting after the damage. It would be almost too easy.

The beginning

... and this picture's gonna have me digging out my old player and connect it to my TV and my wife's gonna get pissed and I'm gonna go "why the fuck doesn't it work?!" and I'll get all frustrated and stuff and when I finally get it working I'm gonna get as mildly disappointed as I got in the theatre back in the 80's. It has a great first act thoughh and I would love to see a director's cut. Btw, in Sweden it had the great title The Castle of Satan (Satans Borg)when it came out on VHS.
-
No other recent movie (since 2010) has been ruled by the rule of idioticy as "Prometheus". To say Prometheus" disapointed would be the understatement of the decade.

@Mr das_butt, "borg" means castle in swedish? That's so cool.

Yeah! :D It just struck me!

He played an old doctor or something. That was in the 80s for the love a ham. Hes still crankin. He. I said. "crank"
-
He must had been in his late 30s or early 40s when he made "The Kep". Like many english theater actors, often times they played older people then they really were. It also helpe the rejuvenation scenes, where all they needed was to take out the olod man make up and just show McKellen's real age. A similiar thing happened with Ian McDiarmid in "Return Of The Jedi", who was only 36 when he played The Emperor. Back then he was specialized, so to speak, in playing very convincing older men. It came in handy when many years later he played Palpatine with his own real age matching his character.

pubes...and real tits...and not dykes...and could still cook...Address the court with gusto!

Bullshit! i',m from the 80s, and the women hae never been more beautiful then today. today even geek girls with glasses can be beautiful. Back in the 80s, wearing glasses alone would be total doom, because back then nobody remembered that glasses could also be stylish, and there was no technology then to avoid the dreaded bottle bottom lenses. The fashion was terrible for men too, but the gilrs too the cake. And the make up was dreadful, full of over-the-top bad colours that only made teens like like they were 40 of age. The older gals looked even worst. Amnd the least said about the fucking hair-dos the better. In terms of women looks, this is a golden age. It truly looks that fucking nostalgia for the 80s is getting way out of hand.
-
Such a odd movie that felt so incomplete, now I see why. Thanks for the info on the film.
-
thou I kind of agree with what docpazuzu said Id love to see this fully remastered on bluray, ideally with a directors cut to fill out some of the plot issues go on my mann, make it happen! i have a shitty ex-rental vhs copy with fuct sound

I've not only read F. Paul Wilson's "The Keep", I've read the entire "Adversary" series by Wilson more than once. There are (technically) 6 books: The Keep *The Tomb *The Touch Reborn Rebirth Nightworld With the * books not being directly a part of the main Adversary series but stories in the same world with some of the same characters that eventually show up in the latter books. Molasar/Rasalom was not a vampire nor was he a golem but he often used those cultural concepts to terrify humanity. It's actually far more basic and primordial than that...Molasar/Rasalon represents 'chaos' and Scott Glenn's character Glen/Glaeken represents 'order' and the story is a tiny fraction of that ancient and eternal struggle between the fundamental forces in the universe. Both were once regular humans who were invested with slivers of the powers of chaos and order - both made immortal and both preternaturally strong, resilient, and powerful. The only thing 'vampire' like about Molasar was that he fed on fear and torment, dispair and sadness and anger. It's why he was awoken when the nazi's arrived and why he felt ready sources of power outside of the walls of the keep (the spread of nazism, etc). I'm also apparently rare in that I've always been a big fan of the movie. The "rape scene" wasn't about watching a girl getting raped, it was about watching some nazi assholes about to rape a woman (Eva Cuza, Magda Cuza in the book, played by Alberta Watson in the film) when an ancient evil happens upon them and given that the woman's "people" and the being that was once the human "Rasalom" are from the same people, the monster dispatched the nazi would-be rapists in a delightfully horrific manner. The soundtrack is brilliant too - this is when Tangerine Dream was on fire with soundtracks in the 80s. And yes, Mann has completely disowned the film. It was this same pretense that Molasar attempted to woo and lure McKellan's character, Dr. Cuza, into thinking that he could wipe out the nazi scourge on earth if he could be released from the Keep, etc.
