Michael Jai White Set to Star In New Action Franchise? Count Terry Malloy In!
What’s up, Contenders? Terry Malloy here reporting live from the Waterfront.
I’ve been totally sold on Michael Jai White as a leading man for several years now. I guess he re-captured my attention in BLACK DYNAMITE, which is fantastic, and White knocks that role out of the park. I went back and checked out UNDISPUTED II after that, and then his star vehicle BLOOD AND BONE. That trifecta was all I really needed to buy stock in Michael Jai White, and I think it’d be a mistake if Marvel somehow misses out on casting the guy in BLACK PANTHER, whether as the main character, or at least in the role of T’Challa’s father, the elder Panther if you will.
At any rate, White broke some news on his own Twitter feed today via Indiewire.com. White has signed on to play John “Falcon” Chapman, in what is intended to be the first film in a brand new action franchise starring White!
You can read the official description, titled FAVELA, from Moonstone Films below. My sense from the initial description is that these stories may take a lot of inspiration from the JACK REACHER series. White will play a wandering, highly trained ex-soldier who finds himself in Brazil for the very first adventure!
Perhaps even more exciting than the prospect of an action franchise for White is the fact that he’ll be re-teaming with UNDISPUTED II and III helmer Isaac Florentine, who put every dollar of those films onto the screen, and then some. Seriously, if you haven’t seen those sequels, they are incredible examples of what can be done in DTV action today. Hell, those two films are better than 90% of the action films that the studios are cranking out with budgets four times the size of the UNDISPUTED films’!
From Moonstone’s Website:
FAVELA - The first installment of our new FALCON action franchise. The franchise will revolve around former marine John "Falcon" Chapman, a dark anti-hero driven by guilt, who will destroy himself unless given something else to destroy - a useful weapon-of-last-resort for the foreign ministry. The first movie, FAVELA, sees Chapman traveling to Brazil to hunt down his sister's killers, in the process discovering an underground world of drugs, prostitution, and police corruption ruled by the Japanese mafia. Directed by Isaac Florentine and starring Scott Adkins as Chapman, the franchise will produce 1-2 movies a year following Chapman as he is sent to exotic locations to do the foreign ministry's dirty work.
What do you think, Contenders? Will White and Florentine be able to re-capture the excitement of UNDISPUTED II? Is there any chance that these films will find theatrical distribution? Does theatrical distribution even matter for a film like this?
And I’m Out.

It clearly says SCOTT ADKINS as Chapman, NOT Michael Jai White. Fucking morons. Adkins is pretty good though, but COME ON. Fuck, I'm done with this.

Even the Moonstone site's info-box says "starring: Michael Jai White'
Sept. 4, 2012, 7:56 p.m. CST
The copy on the webpage says Adkins is Chapman, but lists White under the generic 'Cast' list. So who knows, it does sound way too DTV for my taste. Now if it was Scott Adsit kicking ass all over Rio, I'd pay good money to see that.

Why is Todd Akins starring in an action franchise? I hear that when a movie is really bad, the box office has a natural way of shutting down to prevent negative reviews.
Sept. 4, 2012, 8:02 p.m. CST
...he's Luke Cage, NOT T'challa or T'chaka.
Sept. 4, 2012, 8:03 p.m. CST
...I'd hate to see him try an African accent. I'd rather see a no-name do Black Panther. Or Djimon Hounsou if they go old. Wouldn't mind Chiwtel Ejiofor. Plus, Black Dynamite was a great testing ground for how good a '70's set Luke Cage film starring White could be. Cross it over with Daredevil, and we're set for box office gold. Eh?
Sept. 4, 2012, 8:05 p.m. CST
Jai White has been so close to blowing up so many times. Spawn not quite doing it. Getting cut out of Kill Bill....
Maybe this will do it!
Sept. 4, 2012, 8:08 p.m. CST
yeah, that's true, prominent Cinematographers have said, if it's a legitimate bad movie then the box office shuts down preventing it from getting any sequels at all...which means that Transformers must have been a good movie...?
Sept. 4, 2012, 8:12 p.m. CST
Perfectly nailed the role. I wish the rest of the movie was up to his level, but alas, yet another guilty pleasure kinda like Lundgren as He-man.

Being that I got this scoop straight from Mike Jai White's Twitter feed and the article on IndieWire clearly state White will play the lead. Regardless of whether it is White or Scott Adkins, I'm in. Either of those dudes paired with Florentine has crazy potential for me. I think White is a better actor, but Adkins can probably do a little more flashy stuff, martial arts-wise.
Sept. 4, 2012, 8:46 p.m. CST
uh it says scott adkins is the main character right in the fucking press release, says nothing about white starring at all

Blood and Bone had Johnny Cage in a suit. Ya know? Like how it sucked so much shit that's all I can remember. Black Dynamite is possibly the most flawless comedy of the past 10 years.

White this site seems to be on the "Micheal Jai White" jockstrap, there are two supremely talented black martial arts actors who are overlooked and both deserve there own movies. Chuck Jeffreys and Ron Hall both can fight rings around White and any other western film martial artist. Maybe someone will put them both in the "Black Expendables". yeah man!
Sept. 4, 2012, 9:45 p.m. CST
because of Spawn you really need to see Black Dynamite.

Love the idea of him as Luke Cage. They should try and cast a South African for Black Panther. Also, I loved the Undisputed sequels. So this is awesome news. I just wonder why I'm reading it here before seeing it on Vern's site..
Sept. 4, 2012, 10:17 p.m. CST
If anything, his fighting style and deep voice are more suited to Blade than Luke Cage or Black Panther.
Sept. 4, 2012, 10:26 p.m. CST
Even though SPAWN pretty much sucked, he was perfectly cast. And BLOOD & BONE is a DTV classic!
Sept. 4, 2012, 10:30 p.m. CST
Nowhere does it say that White is playing the Chapman character. Not his Twitter feed, not the Indiewire story, not the studio's site.
All it says, anywhere, is that White is "headlining" this film. Anywhere that the character is mentioned, it says that Scott Adkins is playing him. Sounds like White is one of the main actors in the film, but not the titular character. No evidence to the contrary. Add me to the list who think White would be a cool Luke Cage. He'd tear it up in a film with Iron Fist. Marvel, make it so!

If he can just get out of that DTV enviroment... And for fucks sake, why wasn't he in the Expendables films...even as a bad guy (unless he goes out like a girl again like in Dark Knight).

Bearing in mind that I have yet to see Undisputed 2, 3 and Blood And Bone (dying to), I have seen a lot of their work and both deserve to be much more prolific in film. Both fantastic martial artists and both have a presence on screen. Adkins needs to prove himself a bit more acting wise and his fights are now just starting to get a bit repetitious, unless he shakes things up...but he's young and has enough appeal for different demographics. White is a good actor, frequently attached to disappointing (Spawn) or shit projects (Never Back Down 2...worst movie ever. Do not let him direct again) but despite it all, he has an aura that demands attention. He'd make a good Luke Cage because you believe he can hold his own amongst Cap and Thor. However, I can only imagine Cage being an ensemble player in Marvel Films...not a leading role, something White needs to break out. Black Panther could be a strong choice. The action genre is looking for a new guard to lead, away from the pretty boys and metrosexuals that Hollywood has focused on for awhile now but also some strong men with a bit more brains to move away from the worst boneheaded excesses of the 80's and 90's. I saw The Expendables 2 last night and FUCK that was disappointing.

Yup, I think so as well and a much better casting choice than say..Tyrese Gibson. I met MJW a few Years back at some Comic Convention and spoke to him of his great potential when it comes to action based films. Unfortunately, his agent wouldn't let him speak much. I dunno WTF that was all about, but he seems to be a nice guy nonetheless. I wish him all the best on his next project.

uses the "Apocalypse Now: Complete Dossier" box design on it. They literally just photoshopped out the AN stuff and added their own text. I'm been screaming for Marvel to cast him as the Black Panther! This dude is a beast, but if we can't get him as the Panther than yeah Luke Cage would work to. Black Dynamite was freaking awesome! And I defy anyone that sees Blood & Bone think that this guy isn't a freaking MONSTER! I hope he gets a shot. Stallone should've been on the phone for this guy to be in The Expendables.
Sept. 5, 2012, 10:11 a.m. CST

t i do like the guy. Too old for Luke Cage too surely. A shame, but at least he got to get killed by the Joker eh? Maybe he'll get get to be another hero, or to fight Terry Crews for the right to play Luke Cage only on PPV! Buy your tickets now.
Sept. 5, 2012, 11:34 a.m. CST
Crews has great comedic timing and could really sell the street level character. Seems like a really cool guy too. A lot better than that idiot Terrance Howard. I think MJW's ship has sailed. Too bad. Just find an unknown to play Black Panther.
Sept. 5, 2012, 2:08 p.m. CST
he'd be a great Black Panther as well although my personal pick for that role is Henry Simmons. If you doubt his ability to pull off an African accent, check him out in that Spartacus cable movie with Gorin Visjnic--freaking flawless. MJW has pretty good comedic timing on top of having seven black belts. Seeing him side by side with Iron fist would be nothing short of incredible. (Fist should be an unknown, btw)
Sept. 5, 2012, 2:55 p.m. CST
This has to be the best TB I've seen in years. I'm at work reading this, and choking to keep from laughing out loud. Amazing. I had to re-read the copy three times, because I kept saying to myself "doesn't that say Adkins will be playing the Falcon role?" Finally I said, "the talkbackers will know". And damned if you didn't. Thanks for the laughs, guys.
Sept. 5, 2012, 6:04 p.m. CST
Ugh...yeah, direct to video again. MJW is becoming the king of those and he deserves much more.
Sept. 5, 2012, 8:42 p.m. CST
John Boyega? Sure. I mean let him age and grow up first. Then pump em up with roids. He's just a child with a child's body in attack the block. Maybe you just saw his face and forgot. While
we're at it let's cast the kid from road to perdition as batman.
Sept. 6, 2012, 9:50 a.m. CST
At first, I thought maybe but now I'll have to say no. Why waste someone of his martial arts talents on a bruiser? A smart bad-ass bruiser but still a street fighter. I'm now leaning more on the side of MJW as Black Panther. Or Blade, I guess--but I'm also one of the people who liked Sticky Fingaz as Blade so I might not be the best judge. :)
