This Week in The Basement, Harry talks Tony Scott, HARVEY & ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... This week's episode was a tough one. You have to realize that we shoot these 9 days ago. 9 Days ago I was still in an awful funk over Tony Scott's passing. I went on a run of watching his films. I had a couple of phone calls with him over my time here at AICN, but they were just brief conversations about events we were planning here in Austin. Most notably the DOMINO screening with shotguns at a gun range afterwards. Tony had to cancel, but Richard Kelly who wrote the script for DOMINO came in for the event. I never got a chance to meet the man. He made films that just were so damn watchable. I loved the look and his sense of flair. I also loved that he was Ridley Scott's brother and that he didn't make Ridley Scott films. He made Tony Scott movies and I liked his films differently from Ridley's. Well, just writing this intro has got me all upset again. To counterbalance the sadness, I decided to discuss two movies that can't help but put you in a better state of mind and a pair of intangible guests decided to drop by. Enjoy...

I stuck around through the end credits and was treated to that AWESOME piece about "Superman VS Muhammad Ali"!
by The Reluctant Austinite
I love that book, and I bought the reprint last year. As a kid, that comic made a huge impact on me here in Louisville, KY. The Champ was from Louisville too, and when I was kid I'd often see him out and about town. Not living anywhere near Hollywood, seeing Ali in my hometown was about as close to seeing a real Superhero walking down Main Street as it got. Nice look at "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" too, still the best horror comedy ever made.

Nice choice to do an obit piece here. I feel much the same way about Tony Scott. Although funnily enough your clip of him was the first time I remember actually seeing what he looked like! However the Tony Scott name has always guaranteed I will see a film. People will invariably refer to TOP GUN, LAST BOY SCOUT, TRUE ROMANCE, CRIMSON TIDE but even the more recent stuff where Denzel seemed to become his muse - MAN ON FIRE, PELHAM 123, DEJA VU and UNSTOPPABLE are all actually really decent films. MAN ON FIRE in particular is a tour de force from a directorial pov, Scott really turned his trademark style up to 11 for that one. The camera tricks and moves he pulls off, wow. He will be missed - and from a selfish perspective I hope that his premature passing doesnt make Ridley stop (because I really want him to go full steam ahead and make PARADISE!).

Meet Frankenstein is one of my five favorite films ever. Awesome animation cell, Harry

Great segment Harry. Feel your pain over the loss of Tony Scott. Amazing how much he influenced all the action films made the past twenty years. Here's something to cheer you up though, http://www.vimeo.com/18506654. An homage to the purely great A&C Meet Frankenstein.

HARRY_ weird- I was wondering if you got your haircut, and then you tell Harvey you had your hair done- weird I would notice that....but hey.. I LOVE your LOVE!!!! for cinema!!!!!!!!!!

You came across as genuine, Harry. This is a different side of you...that I don't remember since the late 1990s (when I was a kid).
-
...that I noticed that you have lost some serious weight! Keep it up, bro!
-
Super excited that you chose to spotlight Harvey and its DVD release. Its a wonderful, often overlooked, classic.

It's just... y'know... I mean... just, just, just so...
by popculturesymphony
I love the aesthetic of this series, the guests, the heart and intent behind it. However, I really wish that Harry could edit out the 50 or so extra connective phrases he lets out every episode while he's trying to think of what to say next. It's what keeps this from being a professional act that could be shown on television. Y'know, y'know? It's just, y'know, I mean, so...
-
Have to admit you got me below the cockles with that closing shot.

I mean look at him here. http://www.romm.org/conv05/conv063005_13a.jpg Good job dude keep it up.

But Harry, you're completely ignoring House of Dracula and House of Frankenstein.....
by john
Both of which pre-date Meet Frankenstein. In fact, both might have more monsters than Meet Frankenstein, as they have mad scientists and their huchbacked assistants (though Jane Adams in HoD is far from evil and absolutely cute), giving us a solid 5 monsters, as opposed to MF's four (including the Invisible Man cameo). Don't get me wrong, Meet Frankenstein is a MUCH better movie for more reasons than just Lugosi's appearance (though it is a factor) - you can't forget that the first "Avengers" type film for Universal wasn't Meet Frankenstein....

RIP Tony Scott and Harry's assessment, the impact of T.S.'s career
by Brian Tepper
Oh yes The Hunger and long lensed shots. Harry, you're absolutely correct when you stated that Tony Scott set a precedent in modern filmmaking. He will be sorely missed. Innovator and auteur, RIP.

Maybe I'm forgetting a girl at the baggage counter he hit on or something, but I only remember two.
-
Harry you should really think about some kind of speech class. When the phrase "you know" is in every other sentence it makes your videos look unprofessional. Shave that fucking chinstrap or grow a mustache, that shit is cheesy
-
I've actually enjoyed some of these but they really are only as good as the guests.

Oh wait--that's Dr. Who bowling. What the fuck? I don't always check these out, but now I'm certain that it's a waste of time. Buffoons...

Where's the AICNwHK vid?

Well Harry, I watch the Basement for the first time, always been a big fan, from the corporate world..(although I hate when the site goes politics) .. This tribute was done great and I must admit it was fantastic... applauds!!! I will watch again!! www.haaselineent.com

Not bad, although Bob Clampett directed Coal Black and the Sebben Dwarfs, not Lance. Clampett worked for Schlesinger (Warner Bros.).

I know your knowledge is in live action...perhaps not animation?

I'm seeing a mini webisode from Farscape up there instead of you.

That one bit with Costello and Margaret Hamilton as a voodoo gypsy always scared the hell out of me
by tangcameo
I know its in a different A&C movie but it gave me nightmares, always trying to make my wax doll and stick pins in it before the gypsy could do the same to me.

I grew up on those films as well, when they were put out on VHS in the early 90s. My dad was a big fan, and we'd occasionally we'd head on out to Suncoast Video to pick up Universal Monster movies to the point where I had finally seen just about all of them. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was definitely one of the first movies to combine major characters together in one movie. I'm surprised, however, that you didn't mention House of Frankenstein & House of Dracula though. Not the greatest Universal Horror films, mind you, but I love 'em anyway.

Well As Much As I love Doctor Who......Where's the latest Episode?
by Real Deal
I was really looking forward to this as I just rewatched Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein a few days ago and it's still a wonderful film.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_mj9OTwzJ0 Nice tribute to Tony Scott. I'm a big fan of both the Scotts and feel extra bad when we lose someone like this who has contributed so much to modern cinema. This also made me want to get Harvey and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein on Bluray. They're both great films. Thanks Harry.

The blonde wanted to get info from him and the brunette wanted to liberate him from his brain, such as it was. "Pussyhound"? Lou didn't do any flirting, and he was as "flummoxed" as Abbott as to all of this sudden feminine attention. I agree that A&C Meet Frankenstein is a comedy classic, but you kind of misrepresented the sitch there, dude.
