John Ary On LAWLESS!!
John Ary here with a look at Lawless. I know Shia LaBeouf gets a lot of hate here on AICN and to some extent, I understand why. Those awful Transformers movies and that little film he did with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg... well... they're not my favorites either to put it mildly. LaBeouf gets the chance to redeem himself a bit by working with a top-notch ensemble of performers and he makes the most out of the opportunity. The performances make Lawless a movie worth seeing...

Are we talking about the same awesome John Malchovich movie where Shia plays a Jewish man with a blue eyed redhead mom and fights gigantic robots?

Leave Shia LaBeouf alone! Leave him alone, I'm not so serious!
by TheFlyingWasp
But in all seriousness, you can't blame one person for the flaws of the movie that he is starring in. For a time, Shia LaBeouf was being called the next Tom Hanks and while he has yet to impress the AICN crowd, I feel he has great potential and is taking a step in the right direction with what looks to be a great film in Lawless.

I'm fine with him in the role of a diminutive boy-like person who looks like his family. Maybe cast Ben Kingsley as his dad.

Loved Nick Cave's The Proposition. High hopes for this as well.
by 2for2true
Cave is one talented SOB. His music is top notch, especially Murder Ballads. Saw him in Atlanta with the Bad Seeds about 8 years ago, and he put on an awesome show. As a writer, he's done album-length recordings that are haunting and beautiful. I'm very interested to see if this is as good as the Proposition, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's even better.

Let's take a poll. What's worse? Lazy video review or written review too lazy to proof read?

Seriously, I don't want to be a bully, but I FUCKING HATE THIS GUY! He is like the sign of impending armageddon for aicn. Since he arrived here, this site went to shit even faster than the years before. Seriously... The aicn from 10 to 5 years ago would kick the shit out of the site nowadays! Harry doesn't even review 10 movies per year, all the really good writers have either gone or only write reviews periodically and they start those fucking video reviews. Yuck.
-
Which is a shame, because I love old-timey gangster flicks. But Shia CANNOT ACT. He has NO CHARISMA, WHATSOEVER. I wish people would stop trying to make Shia "happen", because NO ONE IS BUYING. Aside from the Transformers flicks and Indy 4 (all of which would have made money no matter who was starring in them), has Shia EVER guaranteed box office dollars based on his presence alone?

This movie will be fucking awesome as shit if it's as good as the proposition and the road. Let's talk about the road for a second. What

a movie. I'm just gaping mouthed drooling in misery the whole time and then a shining beacon of hope at the end. Chalk it up to one of the great movie endings of all time. Up there with planet of the apes and lord of the flies. Guy pierce shows up and you realize that life will go on.

He seems like the kind of guy who could snap and slowly mangle someone to death in his basement.
by Barnald
Any how, the movie looks pretty good. I'm in.
-
Thanks for asking. I haven't snapped yet, but I have started oiling up the mangler machine in my basement, just in case.
-
His TDKR review suggested he didn't watch half of the movie. Just another person playing up an act for readership and talkback rather than clear discussion.
-
And again, ignore the haters. I think you're doing a nice job. I relate to a lot of the things you say in some of these reviews with regard to "the good stuff" and "what's important" in film. I like your overall demeanor, you are certainly likable. Keep up the good work, bro.
-
Thanks. Greatly appreciated.
-
Hello. I'd like to say your reviews are interesting, you have a good voice to go with this videos, and you have a sympathetic screen presence. So, overall, you done a good job. It's beside the point if i agree with your opinions or not, it's the presentation i'm praising here. I can't deny that i prefer reviews in writing form, but as video reviews goes, yours are quite alright. Good job, Mr Ary.
-
Thanks for the kind words.
-
What I like about your reviews is that you cut to the heart of what's important to you for a film to be good. You point out any flaws and interject if those flaws bring a film down or if they are passable to the other parts of the film where the craft excels. I like your demeanor, too. You are not spiteful, hateful, or arrogant! Plus, you are timely. Screw the haters, and keep on keeping on. I think people fear change and that's where most of the venom is coming from. Excelsior!
-
He's a talented hard working actor. The diminished quality of the blockbusters he's been in is owed to the directors and the studios. Indiana Jones, and Bayformers are lame because...they were lame. Shia did his job.
-
Agreed!
-
Thanks my friend!
-
Work or not...adverts or not...gimme a transcript!!! Speak into a digital transcriber dude...even if it didn't perfectly capture your spoken word, could it possibly be worse than Harry's grammar?

I think Shia doesn't have the charisma yet to be a true leading man
by albert comin
The atemps of Holywood to turn him into a leading man always felt hollow. Sure, he has talent, he seems to have a knack for comedy, but he's just not that engaging a screen presence to be the anchor for a whole movie. He's not leading man material, not yet.
-
As you know I'm in love with you and your video review s. This review makes sense. As in I understand that it's a new motion picture in theaters and expect to see reviews (video or otherwise) on Ain't it Cool. However, I am still perplexed about the BATTLEGROUND review as it is neither cool, nor news. We can take this over to that talkback, if you want more privacy. Wear something sexy.
-
Why would Shia star in a biopic about the actress who was Xena: Warrior Princess?
-
So if you don't, maybe just don't watch his videos? You're doing a great job John! Don't worry about the haters.

Westerns are the most underrated genre of cinema. Some of the greatest films of all time are westerns. I was pleased to hear that Lawless falls within the western perimeters. Looking forward to seeing this one. Thanks!
