Ridley Scott Interview Concerning GLADIATOR!!!

Published at:  Apr 28, 2000 4:47:30 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I get alot of publicity materials for a lot of movies, and thus far... I've never really used any of it.... Mainly because I haven't had good canned video interview stuff that was for a movie that I thought was worth a it.

You see, a ton of the video footage of folks being interviewed about films and things that you see on television shows... Alot of that comes from EPK... an Electronic Press Kit. And you see... basically on a good EPK, you get about an hour or so of short little soundbytes and clips from the film that you have the EPK from.

The questions are usually very simple... they are the basic questions that you see answered in newspapers and magazines, and in a lot of ways it's what I call, "Spoonfed Journalism". Now like I said, I don't usually go with this stuff, but... Last night I saw GLADIATOR again, the final cut... now while I sure as hell wish that more of Derek Jacobi and the Senate stuff was left in.... I understand the tightening of the film as it enhances the dramatic narrative as it pertains to the story that Russell Crowe and the key characters are living. I prefered the cut I saw in San Francisco, though Moriarty (who saw the film last night in Los Angeles) feels this cut moves better. So... whatever. It's a squabbling little bit of difference and ultimately the movie just plain kicks ass.

So, because this movie so plain kicks ass... I had El Cosmico digitize up all the Ridley Scott interview pieces on the EPK to offer up for ya, and coming in the next couple of days, I'll have some others for ya! So far, this is pretty much unseen by you, footage of Ridley Scott talking about GLADIATOR, Russell Crowe, about the epic film, etc. Being a geek, it (as well as the other stuff) must be seen... so we'll get it up as quickly as our servers allow... it's not like we have QUICKTIME or APPLE on board to host this stuff for us, as much as we'd love that. So we have a finite amount of space at the moment.

Click on the Gladiator Harry animation to download it! It's just over 13 megs... also when you see Ridley's mouth move and no sound... That's where the publicity tape didn't have sound... not us editing it. Here ya go...

I haven't quite made up my mind just yet, but "Gladiator" is the only movie I am really looking forward to this summer. Ridley Scott seems to have his shit together, and this will prove no less. Perhaps I am just being naive (or being drunk) but I don't think last summer's stellar lineup of "The Phantom Menace", "Eyes Wide Shut", "South Park", "The Sixth Sense" and "Austin Power: TSWSM" will be rivaled. I must confess, I am looking forward to "Chicken Run" and some other movie that I seem to forget right now. Anyway, that is all I can seem to think of right now. Excuse me, I must use the restroom.

    coolness

    by hotspur

It's really nice to have Ridley back. Of course I haven't seen the film but from all the praise Harry and Moriarty gives it, it must rule. This is a born classic. I look at the trailer 5-6 times a day. The coolest actor alive today, the female leading character who's from my home town (sort of. Anyway she lived here) and Mr. Oliver Reed. You know Russell. Stay cool like this guy did. Stay cool forever. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go check out my Alien and Blade Runner laserdiscs and just forget about films like White Squall and GI Jane. So Ridley. Welcome back to coolness! Hope you stay cool.

    Oh well...still a great movie.

    Having seen Gladiator in S.F.
    I was hoping Dreamworks would
just put some nice credits together
and leave it the fuck alone.
    I like Derek Jocobi's senate
scenes, it gave it some dimensions
    other than JUST Maximus's story.
I want to see the infighting of the Roman Empire, the reasons NOBODY likes the new Caesar !!
Well like you said Harry, we saw
the future Director's Cut/ DVD version. I wonder
if it's Ridley Scott caving in or the studios, that micro-manage and water down his movies? --Syd.

    fantastic

    by dawson's crack

I'm not going to download 13 megs of information, but I have to say, I saw a screening of Gladiator last night, and it is simply amazing. You have to be dead inside to not like this movie. The photography is so beautiful and the score and the special effects are flawless. You are absolutely transported to another place and it starts the second the opening credits roll. I welcome the return of the leading man who is ALL man. I don't care how much of a jerk Russell Crowe is in real life, he is an amazing presence on screen, and has a quality that the majority of all other actors these days lack. Pure rugged and real masculinity.

Dogma DVD - The SE is coming..

    by wesley snipes

.. Initially, there was only going to be one Dogma DVD and it was to be a special edition released around this time. However, we are dealing with the money-grubbing pukes at Di$ney here, so in their infinite greed, they've decided to release the bare-bones edition now and the special edition later. Just like their cartoons. Fuck it, I'm just going to pirate their shit from now on. I'll save the cash for DVDs from studios which give the best product available the first time around and release new SEs only of really early discs (eg, New Line, Columbia).

    SET to be A-list?

    by half vader

Dude, Crowe has been way above most Hollywood hacks since he did Romper Stomper and The Sum of Us. Have these movies actually been released in the states? I realise most movie fans have a 2-movie memory tops, but has anyone even SEEN these fantastic movies? - Now THAT's range for ya. Crowe is the new Richard Burton (in more ways than one).

    Gladiator footage on TLC

    by samuraix47

The Learning Channel had 2 shows on last weekend that showed extensive clips and interviews from the movie Gladiator and about past hollywood gladiator flicks like Sparticus. One of the shows was hosted by a Monty Python alum (i son't know his name). He talked about the life of the gladiator and had a guy who choreographs gladiator fights for historical venues talk about the various training and fighting styles of gladiators. The coliseum set is fantastic... and the CGI completed version is awesome. They had built the first tier of the stadium, CGI the nosebleed sections and added the canopy. There had also been a PBS or TLC show about the ancient canopies used on roman coliseums that was on several months ago. two different historians got the chance to rig their versions of the ancient canopy over a small bullfighting stadium. One rig was much like ancient sailing ship technology with mast and spars and pulleys and ropes, easily retractable when shade wasn't needed. The other canopy rig was like a parachute design that was lifted from the floor of the stadium and hung with ropes that spanned across from one side to another. The 2 different designs were limited by time. Wind also was a factor in stability. Try to catch these shows if you can. Its adds to the background and history of what they are putting on the screen in the theater.
