Anybody got a handle on why the Our First Official Look At Moretz As CARRIE!! article is Closed For Comments?
by L.H.Puttgrass
Two people made comments in the TB and then... nothing. What's up with that?
-
Can't wait for the show.
-
Reminds me a lot of Woody Strode. I'd love to see an updated version of "Sgt. Rutledge" with him.
-
and how George Lucas continues to mentally dissolve with each new SW horror that he brings out. I'm talking about the new detours thing, not clone wars which is at least passable entertainment. You may not have time this week but one of these weeks you have to set aside an hour to take a whack at Lucas's pinata like head...nothing will come outta that pinata it would seem. Then have callers say, "he raped my childhood again and again and again." It would be priceless. At this rate, Paramount and Star Trek have more artistic integrity!
-
Lucas reasons why he can't mount that show make no damn sense, especially with the backlog of ideas from the SW novels and the advances in CGI technology these days. And if he wasn't consumed by ego, he would give this project to JMS or Ron Moore who would have no problems getting this up and running as a quality SF show! Talk about that on KERN too. So much material! They really do need to do a Citizen Kane update with Lucas as the focal point. (after he's dead.) It just writes itself!

Anybody here ever watch Giada de Laurentiis on Food Network and somehow learn nothing about cooking? Yeah, me too.

I have found another way to watch a cooking show and not learn anything about cooking. Maybe it is because I don't speak French. NSFW! http://vimeo.com/38528658 http://patlechef.com/ Oooh! Le Cat!

HERC- you better discuss The superiority of the Newsroom - I don't care what politics one espouses, but this show is the ony show that really matters on TV right now - it entertains AND informs, and it wants the world to be a better world
by Michael Lunney
- it entertains and informs, and it wants the world to be a better world. Love it or hate it- WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!! Reducing the show to how women are portrayed is pure bullshit and meaningless drivel meant to turn people off from watching superior drama and intellectually stimulating ideas and notions about the negative impact of power and corruption. OK, so some may loath it for it's politics- fine- that's the country we now live in. But, I do believe that a show that strives to be something more than a distraction from the real world, instead, a reflection of the real world, and a mirror that the same people who loath this show don't like to gaze into, should be watched by all people who care about the current state our country is in. The show is not a distraction from the real world, like Honey Boo Boo and Hillbilly Handfishin', it is ABOUT the real world. Of course, I expect detractors to begin the belittlin' in 10, 9, 9, 8, 7,..... HERC- you better discuss The superiority of the Newsroom - I don't care what politics one espouses, but this show is the ony show that really matters on TV right now - it entertains AND informs, and it wants the world to be a better world
-
... when talkbackers post about what we "better" discuss or "have" to talk about and the opinions we "should" have. Other than the interview with Lance Reddick, I'm thinking about just talking about my cat and Herc's poodle for the entire show. heheheheheheheh jk

I do watch the show. Have from the beginning. We'll get into it tonight. I'm extending an invite to you to call in during our NEWSROOM segment to say whatever you'd like about the show. I wecolme your input. There are lots of people that love the show. There are lots that don't. Herc loves it. There are parts of the show I dig, but for the most part I have problems with it. Tune in and you'll get the details.

welivestill...ornot - sorry- can't do that- if you want a civil discussion now fine- if you can't, no problem -
by Michael Lunney
So what is your favorite current TV show?
-
Fair enough. I can't get into it now. But I propose an alternative: The show will be archived on the website... askmrkern.com. Listen to it when you can, make some notes, and shoot me an email through the site. Civil discussion is the only kind. :) Current favorite shows are in this order: LOUIE, SOUTH PARK, ARCHER. WOW... maybe if THE NEWSROOM were in cartoon form I'd like it better. LOL

I remember back in '95 when Apollo 13 came out, a critic was astonished when he realized it was a period movie.
by L.H.Puttgrass
At the time it was a true story from 25 years ago. He couldn't believe it had been that long since men had gone to the Moon on Apollo missions. I couldn't believe it either. Now it has been some 40 years later and the only place manned space flight has gone since then is Earth orbit. Kinda makes you wonder, what's up with that? They were talking about advancements in spaceflight that should get men to Mars by the 80's or 90's during the Apollo missions. Then the plug was pulled on Apollo. The last three planned missions were canceled. It appeared the government wasn't really interested in advancing science, just beating the Russians. Now we're on Mars with robot rovers. High tech remote control cars. The shuttles are in museums. NASA doesn't have any manned spacecraft anymore. And the first man to set foot on dirt that wasn't the Earth's is dead at 82. I just started my first week of vacation for this year and a damn hurricane is, at the very least, going to screw up the weather around here and my plans. So I was already... moody. This makes me... moodier? Is that a word? How about I just say, I'm pissed!?! Rest in peace, Mr. Armstrong. I hope others will one day follow where you so courageously placed the first footprint. So long ago...

welivestill...ornot - Well I did wonder if you were Herc or someone that had something to do with the radio show... the way you worded your posts
by Michael Lunney
I have Star Trek The Motion Pictures music on HBO playing in my ear as I type this. I had a nice, lengthy chat with one of producers at KERN who works at your station, don't recall his name, but her answewered the phone within the last hour. I lived in San Diego many lifetimes ago, in the late 50s,, early 60s. Saw tons of horror SF and fantasy movies at the Vogue Theater in Chula Vista, beginning at age 5-6. I have listened to portions of archived shows, but I have yet to hear any AICN callers getting on the air .. What's up with that? You have a cool show, sir...

Aug. 25, 2012, 5:57 p.m. CST
l.h.puttgrass - were you lucky enough to see the original, blurry first moon landing in the wee hours of the morning, as I did? It was the best of times, I was only 13 years old then...
by Michael Lunney
I believe it was a Saturday night.... and it was glorious.... If ET life can be found in my lifetime... then that would be something I could truly appreciate. Unfortunately , as I was saying to my best friend last night, and you concur with these words: It appeared the government wasn't really interested in advancing science, just beating the Russians. If it wasn't for Sputnik, we would have never landed men on the moon. Sad to reflect.... If it were any other way, we would have moon bases and people exploring Mars now.... I remember in 1972, people complaining that coverage of the moon landings were interrupting their soap operas... What a world, what a world...

GET THESE DEMON-MONKEYS OUT OF MY HAIR!!! I must find the Holy Bottle of God's Shampoo! It was lost so long ago with the Holy Grail! I MUST FIND IT! Or maybe after Drew stops playing and the backup QB starts, I'll just fire up the computer... I guess I'm okay now. Problem solved.

l.h.puttgrass - not sure what you mean by just call in and derail it...???!!!
by Michael Lunney
-
Thanks for the props. The policy of the show has always been... call in at any time with any thing you want to talk about, whether we are talking about it or not. We welcome anyone that wants to take the show off the rails... derail the show. I WILL bend this rule, however, when we have guests on. Like Lance Reddick. He may not understand the nonsense that we on the show embrace.
-
I had just made six when they launched Apollo 11. Okay, I'm kidding about the old bit. I'm well into the Body Falling Apart phase of existence on the planet. Ouch Time.

I wanted to pick up Brees badly in my FF draft the other night. It was not to be. My REAL draft will be in Canoga Park tomorrow morning... where I will be awarded our trophy for winning the league last year. Hell-to-the-yes... Good luck with your Saints this year.

Do you think Sorkin made a narrative mistake setting the show in this reality and not in a fictional reality ala West Wing? Hindsight is 20/20 and they look too perfect covering news events knowing their impact well after they happened? Also, they will never get real news people involved in the stories on the show like a real news show would
-
Cool, I'll be looking for it. btw, how was the trip to Winnipeg?

Slipped my mind.

Loved the Reddick interview. My favorite part was when you asked him about his musical influences all eager to talk about jazz greats, and then sounded absolutely deflated when he revealed he was actually a pop and classical guy.

Couple of interesting tidbits for those who don't want to listen to the whole thing:
by Hercules
* Reddick said he's not in the first few episodes back. * The season is set in the future with not a lot of flashback to the present. * Reddick doesn't know how Fringe ends. (They're shooting 5.4 this week.) * This final season of "Fringe" will be its most continuity heavy. * Reddick would probably not accept the role of first officer if JJ Abrams mounted a new "Star Trek" TV series. * Reddick knew in season one that Cedric Daniels would come to run the entire Baltimore PD. * Reddick will play a businessman in Spike Lee's remake of "Old Boy." * Reddick loves Sting (as do Mr. KERN and I).
-
The great thing about that episode was it was NOT about them getting it right over the other networks or some politicians. It felt real, not preachy and a honest peek into how a newsroom handled that historic event.

I bought the seasons as the DVDs came out. It was fun trying to solve the Mystery of the Island for all those years. Where was it leading? I recorded every show on my DVR so I wouldn't miss a clue. I went to the different websites searching for clues and theories. People were saying, They're making it up as they go! They don't know how it ends! I didn't believe that. Surely they had a plan when they started the show, right? A plot outline to follow? Then they cut the last season into two short seasons. 5 became 5 & 6. Was it a money grab by ABC? Were they stalling for time to figure out how to end it? I don't know or care. Jacob shows up. All the stuff from the previous seasons are tossed out the Red Herring window. And we get left with a battle between Good & Evil and which Lost survivor will be the Keeper of the Island's Power until the next guy is chosen. Oh! And they're all dead! Dead since the beginning! What is this? The Sixth Sense? I don't remember if I got season 5, but I DO NOT have the season 6 DVD set. Not me. They can keep the last one. It was an intriguing and well started TV show. It just ran out of gas. It fell short. Only the ones sitting behind the wheel can know why. Us passengers in the backseats can only speculate. So my advice, give it up. It's done. If you're still mad at them. Those people that produced the show. Don't see any of their future stuff. Don't go, if you're so inclined. Me? I'm just done with it.

Herc/Mr. Kern- seems to me that Newsroom is about wanting the necessary, properly critical questions to be asked of ALL politicians, instead of the megaphone talking points spew they allow with almost no rebuttal.
by Michael Lunney
....instead of the megaphone talking points spew they allow with almost no rebuttal. For example, When Bush proclaimed about Bin Laden: I want justice...There's an old poster out West, as I recall, that said, 'Wanted: Dead or Alive" - G.W. Bush, 9/17/01 and then said only 6 months later : I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority.- G.W. Bush, 3/13/02 Where was the followup to that? Don't get me wrong, please, please, someone come up with something Obama said that never got the proper followup.. ALL politicians should be grilled when they make outrageous pronouncements, not mollycoddled- that is what Newroom is about -- to me...

.h.puttgrass - I repect your opinions and you seem like a nice guy, but it was never implied or stated that they were all dead from the beginnning on Lost

mcgootoo - Really? ABC finances a Mystery based TV show set to be filmed mostly in Hawaii, without a plot outline as to what the mystery will be?
by L.H.Puttgrass
How they plan to get there? What clues to leave and when to leave them? The dramatic stuff between the characters? Sure, you do that as it progresses. But if you're planning a story arc concerning adventure and mystery, then by its very nature, you need a plan. Somewhere in season 5, I guess near the end (I'm pulling all this from memory. So it may be a little off.), it felt like they changed plans. Kind of like when Bobby walked out of that shower and a whole season of Dallas disappeared. Gone. Poof. It felt similar to that. Everything that was presented before no longer mattered. All the clues, all the Dharma stuff, all of it. It was all cannon fodder for the New Plan. The Jacob Needs Someone to Take Over the Job of Protecting the Power of the Island Plan. It felt like they cheated me out of my investment in the show. In the story. It pisses you off when you find out that the Haters may have been right all along. Hey, It's their story and they can tell it like they want to. But I think they also have a responsibility to their audience, their fans, to tell a story that respects their time and effort and attention to that story. You don't just grab the whole damn thing and shake it like an Etch-A-Sketch and say, Oopsie! Do over! Sorry! That tends to piss people off. Anyway, that's how I felt about it. Everyone will react to things in their own way. This is mine.

mcgootoo - I give you that point. Those last couple of seasons were a bit of a blur for me.
by L.H.Puttgrass
As I said, I pulled all this from my poor, poor memory. It used to be so good. I remember they were all dead and waiting for Jack at the end. So they didn't all die in the crash and the whole series was Jacob trying to choose someone to take over his job? Okay. I give up. I have a hurricane to tend to... 'CUZ I'M SUPPOSED TO BE ON VACATION!!! FUCK YOU, ISAAC! I'm going to need some Excedrin.

And yes it will suck (for me) on the east coast. 1am to 3am yikes!

It is new on Netflix instant and FUCKING fantastic! It is the story of the fall and rise of almostwas doom rocker Bobby Liebling and his band PENTAGRAM. A very unglamourous look at the downside of Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll. It's like the bastard child of ANVIL: The Story of Anvil and GREY GARDENS. I know these types of movies don't get a lot of coverage here, but it means a lot to me. PENTAGRAM has been one of my favorite bands since high school and so glad they're getting some recognition these days. After watching it last night I came to realize that I (or I should say my band) had a hand in the genesis of this project in a weird fate kind of way. It just added to the connection I already felt towards the band and this movie. If you catch it and like it please spread the word. Amazon has the DVD (which I'm going to buy asap) and like I said before I saw it on Netflix.

^I should've said: Watch this documentary!!! LAST DAYS HERE.

I rarely stump for anything unless its on topic, but this tb is fairly loose in that area. Anyway for the 2 or 3 of you that check back here maybe one of you will check it out. I might re-post elsewhere if I see an appropriate forum. Not gonna bust into the Spielberg list thread with this.

...it still bugs me when people say that the whole death/purgatory thing was a lie. It wasn't. They weren't dead from the beginning, the island wasn't purgatory. The whole afterlife scenario was unrelated to the events that took place on the island and occurred long after the plane crash and everyone's eventual death. I agree...call them out for the ways they obviously didn't have a plan and said they did. But don't accuse them about lying over the purgatory thing, because they didn't.

Put me in the Minority as i didn't find Newsroom compelling.
by Stalkeye
As a matter of fact, the first two eps came off a bit too pretentous for my tastes. The pacing of the story is awkward and worst, the dialog wasn't all that. Did i forget to mention that Munn's presence is another reason not to like this series? Hmm, Now that I have HBOGO on my XBox and smartphone, I'll see what the other Series like Treme, Rome, and eastbound and Down are all about. Sometimes it's a Hit and Miss with HBO. For every Wire there is The Corner. For every Broadwalk Empire, there is Luck. Get what I'm saying?

It never did anything the forecasts predicted. Right after passing Cuba, it never changed into a Cat 1 hurricane like they predicted. Then, just before landfall, Boom! It's a Cat 1! But then it decides to start meandering around off to the west and back into the Gulf. It drifted about at 5 to 6 mph in a random NW heading back on land and then the eye stalled right on top of me. This area already had plenty of rain. The ground was very wet before Isaac. There seemed to be an over abundance of reports of trees falling over due to weakened roots. Isaac kept that slow speed past Baton Rouge but is now heading out of the state at a faster speed. Good riddance. That storm dropped record amounts of rain and flooded places that never flooded before. I did okay though, I lost my power for a couple of days and have couple of busted rose bushes along with some fairly leafless trees. Many others have lost their homes to flooding or wind damage.
