New This Week
When I heard the title I immediately flashed back to Tony Scott’s 1990 Kevin Costner/Madeleine Stowe movie. Turns out Stowe is a major character in this “Revenge” too, even if she is playing the Anthony Quinn role.
A distaff “Count of Monte Cristo” set in The Hamptons, ABC’s “Revenge” is the brainchild of Mike Kelley, who wrote for “Providence,” “One Tree Hill” and “The OC” before he created “Swingtown.” The new series is about a hot young woman who uses an unexpected inheritance and a new identity in her quest for payback against the wealthy people she blames for the long-ago ruin of her late, beloved father.
It stars the fabulous Emily Van Camp of “Everwood” and “Brothers & Sisters” fame.
The scenery is pretty but the dialogue gets pretty awful and the characters aren’t terribly nuanced. I didn’t hate “Revenge” the way I hated, say, ABC’s new “Charlie’s Angels,” but I was never tempted with the second episode.
The critics were all over the place:
... it's just not that good. You're fully ready for to indulge your less noble instincts, but the whole thing is just sort of tasteless and bland. ... seems like it got lost on the way to the CW, or ABC Family, or some network that requires glossy, predictable soaps that don't ask much of the viewer except a high tolerance for colorless dialogue, uncomplicated plots and transparent motivations. …
... overwritten, contrived ...
... just enough campy suspense to be enjoyable. ...
... As is often the case with melodrama, I find "Revenge" essentially unconvincing and also quite likable. At times, it has something of the sound and silliness of kids playing at being sophisticated adults. ...
... campy and kinda fun....
.... the pace is often undermined by a one-two punch of bad dialogue delivered poorly. …
... has enough meaty characters and plot possibilities to keep it going for years. ...
... not-quite-camp, never-convincing ...
… delightfully frivolous …
... The show looks great, and it often sounds good, particularly when Emily is delivering a line we know is nasty but her victim doesn't. ...
... Intriguing and genuinely fun – though you worry about its long-term appeal ...
... doesn't quite pop, even with an opening murder to set the wheels in motion. Although the show incorporates the symbol for infinity, in terms of timelines, earning a full season order provides a more pressing concern. … there are traces of "Desperate Housewives" in "Revenge's" DNA, ABC's latest serial feels oh-so-last decade, which, particularly in the Hamptons, is about as thematically stylish as wearing white after Labor Day.

there's nothing here that i need to break the bank over. (thank god cause what with Joe Kubert and Harry Harrison and Ray Bradbury's death and my need to always honor a creative person by buying their stuff) my bank account is grounding. Not to mention when i see discounted stuff in bins in stores like sprawl mart and books a million. Hope i can pay my rent next month.....(yea i might need to go on skiffys collection intervention!)

COMMUNITY springs to mind. I'd shell out for Blu-rays of that series but refuse to pay for standard def DVDs since I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that there'll be Blu-rays of it in the future.

That crap has been on for 7 seasons now?

5 seasons in 2 years. WTH? 140 episodes. WTH? It also said that House of Payne ran for 8 seasons over nearly 6 years with a total of 255 episodes. WTH? That's more than any other show with a black cast in TV history. They aired 62 episodes in the last season. That's crazy.

You've missed the fact that one of the Holy Grails of home video releases is finally seeing the light of day. On 9/18 Shout! Factory is releasing all of the Steve Martin television specials in a box set!

Spent my dough picking up the Digibook "Jaws" Blu-ray, along with the ones for "All Quiet on the Western Front", "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Man Who Would be King" (last one not part of the Universal 100th Anniversary series, but it also had a little book inside, and is as equally a brilliant film as the others so I felt like it belonged in my collection next to them).

A show 24 minutes long of her just standing there in a white, ribbed tank top would be better than 'Two Broke Girls'.

Followed by Homicide. That's the great thing about your favourite shows on DVD. Collect enough of them and cable tv becomes irrelevant to you. If you miss the next good show that comes along, just wait until it comes out on DVD too.

I just replaced my cool desktop landscape background (lillies in water with a great sunrise in back) with Jennifer staying at me with a cum hither stare. Works for me. I'll even watch crappy Anniston movie just because she's in it. what can i say. Jen's adorable. The only other pic i'd replace it with would be a naked Angelina Jolie. See what i did there? HERC, you made my day!

Blake's 7 and Darkroom to come off of Region 2 European-coded DVDs and go to Region 1 for the USA population. Anyone know if any production companies have this on their schedule. HERC?

i dont usually fall for stupid TV ploy bullshit, but that cover For "Hart of Dixie" is amazing. She is so hot, and so sexy on that cover, its almost unbelievable. Something about her face, and the rest..this is the only poster in which i would blow up and place on my living room wall as a shrine to stare at every morning and night, i cant even make any jokes about boners or masturbation, it would be too disrespectful to that beautiful angel who grace's us with her very existence. heres to you Rachel Bilson, my number one dream squeeze...
Aug. 23, 2012, 6:05 a.m. CST
do what i did with the anniston pic, put it on yer desktop as the background. it's ok, thank me later.

SO, so, so, so, so pissed at Showtime. No internet or cable, so I'll rent my favorite cable series off DVD, such as Dexter.
At the beginning of each disc Showtime runs their promo with scenes from each series. It can't be advanced or fast forwarded. For the two or three seconds that they highlight Dexter, they show the season ending cliffhanger. At first I thought it was just an edited montage, but it fit together too well. And voila. The end of the season is telegraphed at the beginning of each disc that you can't skip past. Thanks Showtime.

HBO did a preview on the 5th season DVD of Oz for the last season. If anyone out there has yet to see the series, DO NOT WATCH THAT FINAL SEASON PREVIEW!!! It not only gives away the fates of some characters, but actually shows a compressed version of how the series ends. Not kidding. When I watched it I figured it was just some stuff, a tease for what was to come. Nope, not a tease or red herrings, it was the highlights of the season boiled down to a couple of minutes. Murder One first season DVD - on the episode list of each disc there are quick clips from the episodes on that disc. Problem is, some of the clips are from the 4th episode on that disc, discussing revelations or events from the previous 3. Can be very spoilery. Whenever I lend the series out to people I make sure to warn them "don't watch the clips on the menu screen. Just go into the menu and click on the episode you want to watch". I only watch the special features after I've seen the season. Another gripe is making of/bloopers, etc special features scattered across 5 or 6 discs of a show's season. Either put them all on the last disc, or on a separate one. I hate having to go back and hunt them down. Worse is renting the series - In that case I'll pretty much skip any features because more often than not they will contain spoilers for the episodes on later discs.
