BTS Concept Art, Costumes, And Vehicles From MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Give Us A Much Fuller Sense Of The Film's 'Look'!!
More from Aint It Cool reader David, whose prowess at locating Behind the Scenes vehicle shots from MAD MAX :FURY road has, to date, remained unmatched.
He's back today with some fascinating costume shots from the film, glimpses of concept art, and several more vehicles. NOTE: the panels apparently illustrating Max appears very "classic" Mad Max in appearance. Given that this art was (evidently) glimpsed on the set of the now-shooting movie, this may well suggest the Max character - now played by Tom Hardy - will look VERY Mad Maxy...appropriately enough..as opposed to being "reinvented" in some annoying way. Of course, who's to say the design won't change between concept art and final product? We'll see...
Here are the images, which originate HERE - where you can find slightly EMBIGGENABLE versions. These shots represent our fullest sense of the film's design/appearance yet. Personally, I can't wait...

I love it! I really love it. Those costumes and concept art has me really excited for this
by Bobo_Vision
I already liked the cast and I love the look of the females cast in this, and the vehicles look old school which is another plus. But that concept art and those costumes really takes me back to the original Conan the Barbarian, my favorite movie. If this turns out like Mad Max meets Conan, this will be epic.

And boobies.

Anyone who created both The Road Warrior and Babe: Pig in the City can only be a genius, and that anyone doubts this is going to be anything less than legendary is laughable. Don't know why more of you assholes don't appreciate George Miller, yet slob all over the knob of that autismal scientist goof ball Christopher Nolan. Miller actually has heart and soul.
-
Paraphrasing, he once said of Indiana J and the Last Crusade, "What was I supposed to tell George, go hire George Miller?" I believe this was said when explaining why he had to drop out of directing Rain Man. And yeah, I've loved most of what Miller's done, especially Lorenzo's Oil. Witches of Eastwick was lost to the studio powers that be, which is why he left America and never really returned (he tried with Justice League and Contact but got soured over Hollywood again).
-
Y'know, I was as wary of a Gibson-less Max as anyone. But pictures like these tend to win a guy over.
-
Yeah the albino guy is Hugh Keays Byrne who played Toecutter in the first movie and was confirmed to be in the new one in the press release last week
-
I don't even have a problem with Hardy - I think he's a good actor. What annoys me is this revisionist notion that Mel Gibson had nothing to do with making Mad Max a household name and cinematic icon. It's easy to bag on Gibson because of his public meltdown, but saying he never mattered to the series is complete horseshit.
-

The Morlock-looking guy could be Hugh Keays-Byrne, who also played The Toe-Cutter in the first Mad Max movie...
by Mark Williams
And even though he is playing a completely different character in this film, and considering that the Toe-Cutter bit the dust in the first film, how cool would it be if he actually WAS playing the still very much alive Toe-Cutter, out for revenge against Max?
-
Jumped of a bridge in Long Beach. Note in car. WTF Poor Ridley. Now he's lost both of his only brothers to tragedy.
-
If he survived the crash in the first movie - a crash in which his eyes popped out if his head - Max would have to have known. Why would he ever leave that guy alive?
-
Aug. 19, 2012, 11:13 p.m. CST
Having the same actor play 2 different characters in the series is not new....ie. Bruce Spence
by Bobo_Vision
It's kind of a cool thing
-
Bad ass. Hope they go hard R and dont get wimpy on us.
-
First
-
Who even holds that notion? Nobody doubts Mel Gibson is a huge part of why Mad Max is what it is, but he is not absolutely crucial to a continuation when you've still got George Miller writing and directing and Tom Fucking Hardy taking over. The old Mad Max's aren't going anywhere. If this where just Warner Brothers slapping the mad max name on something that nothing to do with George Miller I'd agree but otherwise I don't understand the hate this movie gets.
-
Aug. 19, 2012, 11:22 p.m. CST
It all looks been there, done that. Just imitating Road Warrior. 'Reinventing' would have been less annoying than just ripping off.
by kevred
Yes, I know it's George Miller. But this is like Ridley Scott getting some other actress to play Ripley, with the exact same hairstyle and costume, and trying to convince us that it's somehow fresh. This is just a Mad Max tribute band. Getting this close to the source material is more off-putting to me than trying to come up with a new spin. It'd feel less insulting to all those that helped create such a fresh world in the original two films to really reboot/reinvent this. As it is, it's just a bunch of, "oh, that looks like X from Mad Max 2..."

I've settled that issue. I am the law.

Your words: "Also don't see why so many people think Mel Gibson is critical to the Mad Max role, he isn't. It's a nameless drifter archetype. He can be anyone." So, should we make a sequel to THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY with some modern actor who isn't Clint Eastwood? I mean, he's a nameless drifter archetype, he could be anybody, right? Why shouldn't we be able to revisit Leone's world with, say, Christian Bale in the lead? He's a good actor, right? Just give me more "Man With No Name", even without the guy whose presence made people believe in it in the first place. Fuggit. Then, let's do a new Dirty Harry, but cast Sean Penn since Eastwood's too old. Come on, it's still Dirty Harry. You may not believe it, but a lot of us liked Mad Max because we liked Mel Gibson. He made a selfish, violent, often meanspirited character with minimal dialogue cool and likeable, which is very hard to do. And in doing so, elevated a B-movie to something iconic, literally turning "Mad Max" into a household name. I admire your pragmatism, but for a lot of people, the actor and the role are intertwined, whether it's Indiana Jones, or Hannibal Lecter, or Dirty Harry. People even argue about who the best Bond is. With big, iconic movie characters, it absolutely fucking matters.
-
Don't let it be like part three.
-
Why shouldn't we be able to revist Leone's world
-
to answer Because Leone is dead. Otherwise, if he were alive and writing and directing and Morricone were doing the music sure, I don't see the problem. Bringing up Dirty Harry makes no sense though. Dirty Harry was all Eastwood. The series had a bunch of writers and directors. And a couple shitty movies too. Mad Max and the Dollars trilogy are too big to be tied to one guy's performance, too mythic. It's stupid to take Ennio Morricone/Sergio Leone and George Miller's contributions, throw that away, and reduce it all down to Eastwood and Gibson. Also you keep acting like I hate Mel Gibson and I don't know why.

George Miller is doing this, so TECHNICALLY its still original material. This is simply a case of Crystal Skull syndrome IMO
by Balkin Flabgurter
But "Mad Max 5:Furiosa" will follow immediately supposedly, so Miller could and probably does have a bad ass plan up his sleeve!
-
This is not like Crystal Skulls, Dr Miller has been wanting to do this movie for over 20 years.

Is Hugh Keays-Byrne (Toecutter) the guy in the 8th picture? His eyes and brows look just his!
by Can
-
Aug. 20, 2012, 5:52 a.m. CST
Yeah, nothing like Crystal Skull. Also, Miller didn't direct Thunderdome
by Don_Drapers_Acid_Trip
His friend died during pre-production for Thunderdome, another director who was just a mouthpiece for the studio took over and they had him make it more a kid's movie. The man's output is flawless when he isn't fucked over by the studios or acts of god. And how can you even compare this to Crystal Skull? George Lucas isn't even in the same league. The best parts of star wars and indy came from other people when he didn't have totalitarian control over his material. When is the last time he both wrote and directed a masterpiece all his own?
-
More concept art, please This is all looking pretty awesome

Actually Keays Byrne willll be playing "Immortan Joe"
by Baron Von Penguin
-
especially the slight grey-streaked hair on Max in the tanker (same shot as Mad Max 2). I don't think, even with all the changes (refuse to say advances) they will better that film, but will enjoy their attempt. The design looks pretty cool, especially the cavefish(?)/rocketeer looking masks!
-
There's a huge difference in your analogy with Leone and Miller. The difference being Leone is dead, and Miller is not. If Serge Leone was still alive and had a vision for another "Man with no name" film that he had been trying to get made for the last 20 years, but decided to cast Michael Fassbender instead of Clint because Clint is too old now......I would love to see that movie!!!!!! Are you fucking kidding me? I would love to see that. <p> Leone was the vision behind the "man with no name" films just as Miller was the vision behind Max.

by I_Snake_Plissken
....you wanna' get outta here, you talk to me." Hardy is fine, but in my mind this is just going to be a new Post Apocalyptic film. Mel is Max, period.
-
it would be great- not because breasts are cool but because certainly a powerful woman in the barren wastes may go topless and use them to her advantage. the concept artist seriously needs to learn how to draw realistic, subtle breasts though. i'm going to assume that character does not have implants circa 1988.

this article is an interesting wordburger, but what is the knob with the rivets in leather?
by zom-bot.com
-
ha ha kidding, can't wait for this movie. Many post-apocalypse movies, games and shows have come out since Thunderdome. I'm sure Miller knows what he's competing with. Walking Dead, Fallout 3, I Am Legend, Book of Eli....But now the lone-wolf grandaddy of that genre is returning.
-
Regardless of actual quality
-
It would make the transition from Bane to Max smoother.

Aug. 20, 2012, 3:07 p.m. CST
all you people that keep saying it looks like Borderlands- how old are you?
by zom-bot.com
i don't ask to be an ass, I'm just wondering how old (or young) someone has to be to say that a movie in a 30 year old series looks like a video game that is a few years old that also uses a fashion and cinematic style that was inspired by said old movie series?
-
Practical or CGI?

and George Miller is the shit!

bobovision - you're splitting hairs and dodging my point.
by Mosquito March
I know Leone's dead. Let's pretend for the sake of argument that he isn't. If Leone was alive and chose to make a new MWNN film with Fassbender, he would never be Blondie. Clint Eastwood was Blondie. We know and care who Blondie is because Eastwood was a badass in the role. The problem here is that some people are saying you can remove Mel Gibson from the Mad Max equation without it making any difference. But, Mad Max was not just George Miller. Mel Gibson was an essential ingredient in the success of those movies. All I'm saying is, whatever Gibson's stock might be worth right now, he deserves a lot of credit for making Mad Max work.
-
Aug. 20, 2012, 4:07 p.m. CST
That should have been "don_drapers_acid_trip & bobovision"
by Mosquito March
Face it - you're saying the actors don't matter as long as the same director is involved. That's completely absurd, and you know it. We have only to look at George Lucas and what he did to Darth Vader, Obi-Wan, Yoda, etc., while he was "revisiting his world" to see how bad going back to the well without your original cast can turn out.
-
Aug. 20, 2012, 4:38 p.m. CST
George Lucas was not the the sole creator of a new hope and empire
by Don_Drapers_Acid_Trip
While he basically was on the new trilogy. So I don't get what your saying. The comparison makes no sense. I said original creators, not original director.
-
Simple. Would you like me to tell you what to eat and what clothes you should wear, too? Jesus Christ. Do you hang ou at the local pizza place arguing with people about why mushrooms don't taste good on pizza? Seek help, man. You have no point, only opinions.
-
Aug. 20, 2012, 7:02 p.m. CST
looks like he's making an effort to cast old friends in new parts...
by zom-bot.com
I applaud him for casting good old toecutter as a new character.... as far as casting max,for whatever reason, Mel may have not been an option.
-
No one is saying otherwise. Mel was fantastic in the original films. But, he has moved on. That Mel no longer exists. Mad Max is a character. Like James Bond, he is being re-cast with a new actor to continue the story. I suspect this will work out well because we have the original director/writer, Tom Hardy and what looks like excellent production design. As long as the action staging and filming are also cool I cannot see this film failing creatively. Box office is meaningless regarding artistic worth considering there are some terrible movies that do well.
-
Go fuck yourself Miller.
