Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
Welcome back, folks! I let it slip on twitter what my big secret California trip was, but in case you’re not on the twitter machine yet, I’ll go ahead and say it here. I went to Skywalker Ranch for an Indiana Jones Blu-Ray junket. It was a pretty epic trip, my first to the Ranch, that included getting to see Raiders of the Lost Ark at an IMAX, hearing Ben Burtt and Dennis Muren talk about working on the Indy films and getting a special tour of the Lucasfilm Archives… Yeah, I held a Sankara Stone and touched The Ark. Who wants to touch me?
So, now you know why I threw so many Behind the Scenes pics up from the Indy films.
While the great-necked one was nowhere in sight, I figured it was only appropriate to give him a little thanks for letting me onto his beautiful property by posting a shot from THX 1138. Here he is super scruffy and skinny. Is it just me or does young Lucas give off a slight Edgar Wright-ish vibe? Thanks to Pat Barnett for sending the shot along and be sure to click to enlargen.

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
Tomorrow’s pic was requested in the talkbacks for the big Jaws/Raiders/Temple triple threat I posted just before my California adventure. It involves a beach.

... but technological limitations mean we can't. Hopefully, one day, it we'll be able to fix this. "

Edgar Wright and Billy Corgan sharing a moment.

...all the characters had big bushy '70s hair and beards and spectacles. Yeah, including the robot cops.

LOL! You know about the deleted scene about not touching the Ark?Right? ;-)

You can't tease us with Raiders in IMAX and not give us a sense of how it looked. Spill the goods.

Actually, give Duvall a mohawk and he'd be Travis Bickle
by BenBraddock
He even has a De Niro spot on his face! I really need to see THX 1138 as I never have. Shameful really...

OK, quick question from someone who's never seen the movie
by BenBraddock
Should I see the Director's Cut or the original? I can only find the DC on LoveFilm but a reviewer says it's crap...

benbraddock: see the director's cut definately. It's got the Lucas jack off robot. It's the only Lucas director cut to see
by UltraTron
-
Aug. 19, 2012, 8:12 a.m. CST
The jack off robot is in the original movie but off camera. Lucas finally had the tech to insert the jack off robot and it's an improvement to the movie
by UltraTron
-
Aug. 19, 2012, 8:13 a.m. CST
You can't write jokes this good. Yes Lucas did actually insert a jackoff robot into this movie
by UltraTron

And speaking of, Jason has a bit of a Dave Grohil thing. Or do they all just have a George Lucas!?
-
We don't use real words here. It is usually something like EMBIGGEN. As in, Click to Embiggen. I wouldn't worry about it. It's an AICN thing.

Masturbation robot? What... <google> ... what ... what the fuck? WTF!?! ... <opens incognito window> ... <unzips pants> ...

With all the money and resources in the world, you'd think he would just crank out more 'artsy, personal' films like this. But no, he'd rather stick to being a toy manufacturer.

Hey Quint, I've been to the archives too, and the rumour is
by white_vader
that inside the Ark is a Howard the Duck. That WOULD destroy you! My wife said she felt guilty being there, because a thousand geeks would have crawled over their mothers to be there. Then she wore Indy's hat (I have a photo of me in the Fett helmet) and forgot all about the fanboys… I even saw the mask for Lumpy!
-
the neck! Zing!
-
That's weird.
-
I miss the filmmaker in this pic. Such potential.
-
Thanks... I think. Not entirely sure if you're serious. The mind boggles. More to the point, anyone know where I can acquire a jack-off 'bot?!

...anyone who touches the (real) Ark is struck down instantly. This is why it is carried around with golden rods. Just FYI.
-
triple threat auteur, and one of the greatest initial set of three feature movies by any filmmaker EVER. You can't even measure just how great 1977's Star Wars was. Even if it was a lucky perfect storm of the right minds and hands at the right time (as subsequent films proved).
-
Aug. 19, 2012, 3:35 p.m. CST
Star Wars wasn't a Perfect Storm of Right Hands, Right Time etc...
by jazzdownunder
It was a perfect example of when saying "No" or "Sorry, you can't" to someone makes them work harder and achieve better and more. Lucas lost it when people stopped saying "No", and/or if they did he just stopped listening.

benbraddock: I'm completely serious. There is a flawlessly executed robot that now lowers from the ceiling and jerks off Robert Duvall in the director's cut

Love this movie. Love the blu-ray/special edition. Fuck the haters...

Lucas may be a poor filmmaker now (Though I actually loved Ep 3) you can never take away the 3 great films that HE fully headlined. THX, American Graffiti & Star Wars. Those are his babies. And they're great. And with Empire & Raiders, he's got an even better track record with producing. When you produce such great art for so many years, it doesn't matter how you end up in the end. Nothing can take away the greatness you've done. It will always be there. Nobody cares when the Rolling Stones writes new shit, because they've already achieved greatness. They can do whatever they want. They've earned it. Fact is you're all still here looking at behind the scenes pictures of HIS movies. That speaks muthafuckin volumes about the greatness he achieved.

Favorite Lucas film. Favorite quote from the film!
-
Hmmm, not a very common name anymore, is it?
-
I bought THX-1138 on VHS in my late teens, when I still thought that George Lucas was a minor deity. Had to place a special order at Suncoast since nobody stocked it. After receiving the call that it had arrived, I rushed out to pick it up, and sped home to finally watch George's first epic creation. Within ten minutes of starting the film, I was asleep. The next day I tried watching it again. I lasted about twenty minutes that time. It took the better part of a week for me to watch the entire thing. It's a good story, but there's not enough there for such a long movie. It is however a fantastic cure for insomnia. Whenever I can't get to sleep, I just pop in my copy of THX. Still works like a charm.
-
I'd sell my children off for scientific expirements to get inside the archives and see the Indy stuff..
-
Lucas built his empire and filled it with nothing but yes men. When his ideas are crap, there is nobody there to challenge him anymore. Which is a shame, because when he was challenged, he put out some wonderful stuff. I would also venture to say that when he had budgetary restraints, and was challenged to find innovative solutions, he made better stuff. It must have started with Howard the Duck, because that was the first of his downward spiral to where he is today. Willow really wasn't that much better. Man, I was like 10-12 years old when those came out, and you'd think those would be perfect for a nerd like me, but I even knew at that time those movies sucked. (Well, to clarify, I knew Howard the Duck was garbage, but I also knew that Willow had some redeeming qualities about it - but the fact is, there is a lot of awful stuff in it, despite the redeeming qualities, and that awful stuff is signature Lucas...)
-
Recently got the chance to see the old laserdisc version of this film. Such a different film than the new dvd release!

Lucas directed six movies - three classics, one great and two that are a bit rubbish
by richardHarrisonsSteamedCrabs
This is only my opinion but that is not a bad batting average compared with his buddies Spielberg, Scorsese, Coppola and De Palma or other directors I like such as Carpenter, Scott, Jackson or Tarantino. With a gold to mediocre/shit ratio I'd say that Lucas fares well with those I've already mentioned. Add his creation of Indy and production of Empire and Jedi and I say cut the guy some slack. Again only going by my tastes I'd say only Kubrick and Hitchcock have close to a full house of kick ass movies to their name. THX 1138 is fantastic, as is the DVD. The extras are awesome. Got the original VHS too but have never compared. About time I bought the Blu I reckon.

You know that George Lucas was in a car accident that a lot of people didn't think he'd walk away from, right? Right? No, no, it makes you look cooler to make fun of someone's physical imperfections... Especially if the illustration of you is any indication you're a walking posterboy for Type 2 Diabetes. I'm probably wrong. I probably don't appreciate the fact that this guy single-handedly changed a whole generation of kids dreams. It's probably way cooler to bash the guys physical appearance to make yourself look way cooler. Super cool.

He raped some childhoods, remember? Same old tired bromides have dulled a bit, but they are still in their pathetic glory, now propagated by the parasitic likes of red media and jerk off loser Plinkett and all those drooling stumps that lick it up like a broken pixie stick, "yeah, yeah, so true, so true!" Suffocated, loser man-children who refuse to change and grow up. Too obsessed with their own likes/dislikes, anything counter to that is THE WORST SHIT EVER! Idiots.
