THE SILVER SURFER live action short! Watch it Now!

Published at:  Apr 25, 2000 6:17:24 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a report from Rockin Robin about a SILVER SURFER short film that is showing on AtomFilms.Com Now, I can't seem to access their website yet, but I have seen the short and it's pretty friggin cool, and now if FOX would get off their ass and make this and that damn FANTASTIC FOUR movie, I'll be a tad happier. If you find a direct link to the short email it to me, and I'll update the site with it. Talk atcha later...

Dear Harry,

This is my first time writing in, and I just want to say I love your site
and appreciate all the work you do. I've got some news for you that I
thought you might enjoy. It's nothing earth-shattering, but it is kind of
fun.

I have been a comic book fan since the age of nine (I'm twenty-nine now),
and I know many of the readers of your site are fans too. I even attended
USC's Graduate Film Program in hopes of making the ultimate Batman film
(which, in my humble opinion, hasn't happened yet). Currently, I am working
at a website in Seattle called www.atomfilms.com

At this time on our website, we are showing a "Silver Surfer" short film on
our site. I had heard about this film from various sources, but this was my
first chance to view it...and it's pretty damn cool. Rumor has it that it
was made by a USC student who hoped to impress Marvel with it

It won't work. Oh why won't it work. I've heard about this, I've wanted to see it. It says the path and filename need to be verified (for Windows Media Player, I don't go for RealPlayer unless there's no choice left, but I'm not about to buy G2). Help, someone.

    not bad

    by il diabolo

I only watched it without sound (I am at work) and it didn't look too bad. They need more people with the ability to interpret comics to live action and not be completely cheesy. I think there is a lot of potential there. Hopefully the Silver Surfer doesn't look SO computer generated. Maybe they could use the same technology as they used in Spawn to make the CGI Spawn's move more naturally.

If the short was made six or seven years ago - ah, skip that, I know it was - I've seen it. It's okay cause they got the reflections right. I forget the name of the SC punk who made it - my friends thought he was a real ass but I didn't know him.

That "film" makes absolutely no sense!

    by darth siskel

What a waste of film. You spend the time & effort of gathering a crew together, buying film, setting up lights, actors , etc. and the story is.... SILVER SURFER COMES DOWN TO EARTH TO SCARE OFF 10 YEAR OLD BULLIES & CHANGE A BOY'S T2 DOLL INTO A SILVER SURFER DOLL. ????? What the fuck!? That was as stupid as it gets. Even the F.F. movie was better. STORY!!

    by pagz

Okay, first off, that film made no sense. It wasn't the Silver surfer, it was a toy commercial, and a really bad one. Who wrote that piece of tripe, and why oh why did someone bother making it. It feels like a product of Marvels film ventures of the 80's. Very sad.

...this is an unfinished clip from an upcoming Silver Surfer feature. The Matrix outfit will be added to the Surfer in post production, and what you see is the climax of the big-screen interpretation of the famous "Infinity Gauntlet" series. Fuckin' a, this sucked. Silver Surfer is a cosmic and powerful being, not somebody who is so obessed with changing all toys into his likeness. Crap.

    Saw this YEARS ago

    by damien667

Hell, I was on a tour of the USC Film School when I saw this. It sucked then, and considering the way technology, especially CGI rendering has advanced-- this short is sadly out-of-date. The acting in the beginning is horrendous, and the climax is a pathetic joke (though, I imagine Marvel might like it as a licensing idea to pull their ass out of Chapter 11). Want to know why Hollywood won't sign these guys up? Because they suck and so does their short. Maybe they could stop shopping around a FIVE YEAR OLD PROJECT and spend a few dollars to do something more constructive-- like get a better education!

...garbage. After seeing this steaming pile I think I would rather see a Powerman and Ironfist live action film get made. Hey, I like the sound of that. Brad Pitt as Ironfist and Djimon Hounsou as Luke Cage, AKA Powerman. YEAH SUCKA! I'm joking of course. I assume that anyone with a positive view of that horrid short film is trying their hand at sarcasm.

    by skytalker

Making a film, any film short or feature length is never a walk in the park and defenetly takes a little more than posting talkbacks on AICN does, so shut up! I liked the T2 joke. At least the students who made this had courage to do the bit knowing that the fanboy hordes are always waiting for something new they can bash.

    Before you go criticizing it....

    by epitone

Well, I see a lot of people saying "that sucks" and I guess I'm not surprised seeing as how talkbackers generally think everything sucks (that Reel Big Fish song should be your theme song). But keep in mind that this movie was made about nine years ago, right around when Cameron blew everyone away with T2 but with maybe 10% of the resources and technology that Cameron had available. I watched it at USC's video library when I was there over the summer and found it very impressive. It's more a technology demo then a feature film, of course, but it was also never intended to leave the walls of USC. You guys are extremely lucky to be able to see it at all.

Not that I could do better, but...

    by dtsipras

This is hardly the "vision" that will light a fire under some exec's ass. Liking the story isn't the issue at hand. Simply having the Surfer come to Earth and inadvertently scare some kids into thinking he's the T-1000 is not the stuff that will make a true-believer out of someone.

The biggest hurdle with a movie based on the Surfer is that you have to convince the general public that it isn't crap. People are generally not comic book fans. And it is going to be hard to convince them that if they can just look past the hokey premise that this hero rides a surfboard everywhere, they'll see the brilliance in the work. I think an audience is willing to suspend their disbelief with something like Superman, Batman, or even the Fantastic Four. They're familiar with the story and it is easier to swallow. But asking them to embrace a metallic, surfboard-riding alien who is the herald for a guy who wants to eat the Earth with his big planet-eating machine is just too much to ask.

Would you like cheese with you whine

    by vidman

First time writing here and what can I say. I have never seen a louder bunch of whiners in my life. And they all seem to miss the basic ideas here. The fact is that this is a short, not a feature film, and made by film students, not a major studio with money backing it up and being spent like water.

This short shows us the potential that the Silver Surfer possesses and as Harry said, that the movie should and does need to be made. What it does is show potential investors that something entertaining and creative can come from the Silver Surfer.

Taking on bullies vs. the power cosmic? Come on. The surfer may have battled the galactic forces unlike any other, but at the heart of the story was his quest for peace, harmony and love. Go back and read the first issues or buy the ESSENTIAL SILVER SURFER and read them. He was constantly trying to find peace in a world that seemed to have none. And he sure as hell would not find it within this group.

Give it a rest. Give credit where credit is due. It always amazes me how those that sit back and watch can speak badly on something yet do nothing themselves, nor encourage those that at least try.

Bravo to those who made the film. With a little money, a studio behind them and more, they could make a great flick.

    You people whine too much

    by one time deal

Obviously, it was baout the technology to make the Surfer appear, not the plot. So relax. Stop whining. It was well done mechanically.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Sorry, but the writing in this was terrible, especially the psuedo-science gobbledegook in the beginning. Ack. The plot was horrid. The technology displayed was something that anyone could have imagined easily without an actual visual. So, this was developed by someone with very little money displaying technology near the level of Cameron's T2 soon after that movie was popular. Okay, then hire this team as a CGI team for low-budget flicks, but there is nothing in this short to convince anyone that a silver surfer movie should be made. This must be a slow news day because it wasn't worth Harry's time to recommend it to us nor was it worth my time to view. Just because I can't make this flick doesn't make my opinion worthless. It that were true, Harry wouldn't have an AICN site telling Hollywood when they're making stinkers nor would any of us have any right to have any opinion on any aspect of any film.

    by sorak

I dont know what you are all talking about. It has great potential. I think depending on how X-Men does Marvel/Stan Lee and everyone should actively see about getting Silver Surfer to the Silver Screen. The Sci-Fi potential alone following his origin and turn on Galactus would make for a great movie.

    by chad piercewell

Hey, what the heck! This is such a corporate studio short. Did Spielberg make this? What!! The whole point of shorts is that they're made by aspiring filmmakers with unique visions, not retreads of T2!!!

You wanna see a real short, which is way better? Made by a good filmmaker with his own money and time?
