Director of EXPENDABLES 2 is directing Nick Cage trying to get his daughter back in STOLEN trailer!
Hey folks, Harry here... I just love EXPENDABLES 2, it's not a very tight film. The script is wildly Looney Tunes-esque - with the score even pulling some riffs to accentuate the lunacy. But director Simon West isn't a director for taut reality or anything highbrow... CON AIR taught me everything I needed to know about Simon West. Well, he's got another film coming up, which is a bit like TAKEN, but instead of Dad working for the CIA - he's a theif recently released from prison and having to deal a crazy looking Josh Lucas... just to get his daughter back. Variation on a theme, but will it be fun? Trailer looks fun, no?

Wow, "Stolen" might be the most perfect title this film could ever hope to have.

Perfect. I still don't know if someone spent $40 million just to pull our legs with that title, but I guess Hollywood has spent money on crazier things.

Not a difficult word, sir. Seriously.

Than a direct, obvious ripoff of a fairly new movie.

Really wishing Cage would just go away for a couple of years and stop stinking up the industry with his constant flow of shit. Someone seriously needs to sit him down and explain the difference between 'quantity' and 'quality'

Loved "Con Air" but Expendables 2 is one of the shittiest-looking and most poorly photographed $100 million movies I've ever seen. At least Sly made the first movie look cinematic...

I've always found "The General's Daughter" to be very taut and realistic.
by The_Genteel_Gentile
I guess maybe that's not a popular sentiment, but I've always felt Simon West's direction on "The General's Daughter" was quite mature and assured. A really solid and underrated mystery thriller.

Any still remember when Nicholas Cage was a good actor who did great films?
by Rob0729
Back in the mid-90s, this guy was on a role with a mix of solid dramas (Leaving Las Vegas) and pretty good (yet some incredibly dumb) popcorn action flicks (The Rock, Face Off, Con Air). Now he does stuff that would be direct to video except for the fact that his name is attached to it. I know he is in serious tax trouble, but there has to be better quality movies that he can do. Even Samuel L Jackson, who apparently has never said no to a movie part, does mix the shit movies with some quality films.
-
is that the last time Simon West and Nicholas Cage got together they made an incredibly dumb, but somewhat amusing movie. Con Air was stupid, but for a dumb action flick, it was pretty good. I know it had to do with the fact that Cage, Cusak, and Malkovich knew the material was crap and hammed it up to make it interesting.

rashomon - domestic BO numbers mean nothing, you should know that by now
by wcolbert
International grosses routinely far outstrip domestic earnings for most given movies - I really dont think it'll be any different for EX2. It's a bit lower of a Friday take than the first one, but not by THAT much 10.5 vs 13 .3 mil. We're looking at probably a 27 mil take this weekend - expect international to at least double that. In fact, whatever it makes domestic, tack on an additional 10 to 50 percent and sum them - that's the likely final take of the film - and it absolutely will make its budget back. There's virtually no doubt as to that. This has just been a weak time for movie releases in general. Why people completely ignore the profound importance of the final worldwide gross and only look at domestic numbers when the north american market is TINY in comparison I'll never know. If people had just looked at Avatar's domestic take and ignored the international gross, it'd only make 700 some million - you'd be missing two BILLION dollars. So give it some time and look at the worldwide gross. It's not to be ignored. America is not the only country in the world.

Is everyone taking crazy pills? Expendables 2 was all kinds of fun!
by sweeneydave
These guys have all done the action scene to pieces. Now they're legends and they get to just have fun! That's exactly what they were doing. It was a bunch of legends goofing off, with quality bloody action, none-the-less. The tone was light. The plot was brainless. The cameos didn't make sense. It was exactly what I went to see and I loved every second!
-
That trailer was ruined by poor sound mixing, which made the awful voice-over even worse.

The voiceover sounds oddly pasted-on - as though the trailer was completed, someone didn't thnk it made enough sense, and so Mr. Narrator Guy Voice was dropped on top in a few awkward places.
by kevred
Plus, it's a really bad voiceover. Hard to rate a film on its merits when it really has no reason to exist. I think Liam Neeson and Mel Gibson have this area covered, thanks.
-
In that it was stolen from TAKEN. There has never been a more appropriate title since DISASTER MOVIE.
-

sweeneydave- people here long ago forgot how to just shut up and enjoy movies for what they were intended to be, rather than what THEY wanted them to be
by wcolbert
Audiences have become very self-centered (see Harry's TDKR review where he harps on the film for basically not lining up with *his* personal opinion of what Batmanshould be)...it's all "me! me! me!" - they've gotten spoiled. We've had decades of great movies since the advent of the film industry - and with each new generation of filmgoers, there comes an increase in expectations which has elevated to unattainable levels. People, unfortunately, have become so damned stupid that they cannot come to terms with the notion of a view/opinion that deviates from what they think is quality. Thus you get all these idiots who think they're smarter than anyone who enjoyed a film they hated. I see it all the time - "You LIKED that movie? You must be an idiot!" or "you DIDNT like that movie? Only an IDIOT would think so!"...the irony inherent in their statements completely lost on them, of course. That said, I haven't seen EX2 yet -but I plan to - and I plan to enjoy it, because I know what I'm going there to see, like you, and I dont expect it to be anything else than our heroes, perhaps a bit more time-worn but no less awesome, having a blast doing what they love the most - for our entertainment.
-
wcolber'st opinion that movies have continued to improve, hence the heightened expectations. Watch Hitchcock, Welles, Forman, Antonioni, Kubrick at the top of their game and then compare them to the current crop of supposed A-list directors. With a few exceptions, the vanished art of film-making has been replaced by paint-by-numbers plot, CGI and marketing budgets aimed at selling food, toys and video games. The Golden Age of Film has been replaced by the Gilded Age of Commercials.
-
Aug. 19, 2012, 12:28 a.m. CST
I didnt intend to say movies have continued to improve - on the contrary, the *average* quality of films released is pretty low at present
by wcolbert
I just meant that we've had decades of great films (mixed in with lots of bad ones, naturally), and the more time that goes on, the more people expect more and more and more of what THEY like - nevermind the tens of millions of other people who see the movie who might not have the same tastes. The ability of the average audience member to think outside of "but it's not the way *I* pictured it" and realie the film isn't made for them alone...I think has declined. I mean, yeah, a crap movie is a crap movie in my book - but then again, for even the most detested movies ever made, there's at least SOME people who loved them. It's all subjective - and that's what people fail to realize about the film making process. No director in history has ever made a film that everyone who ever watched it loved. Some people go apeshit over Star Wars. Some people hate it with a passion. We need to stop whining if movies aren't our cup of tea, and just celebrate the ones that are. That's not to say we should encourage film makers to selfishly do whatever the hell they want with a film without the audience in mind - but they can't possibly appease everyone, so the best they can do is aim for telling the best story they know how and hoping the majority of people see what they were going for without screaming bloody murder because it wasnt exactly the way THEY would do it. I would have followed the book far more closely for Jurassic Park, had I directed it. I'd have kept in Hammond's death, the raptor nests, the real ending, the tyrannosaur in the lagoon...but Jurassic Park is still MY personal favorite movie ever made. I can see why Spielberg made the choices he made, even though my opinion on what it should have been differs. That's what's lacking with audiences. That ability to appreciate the director's vision, rather than their own.

They shouldn't have used that voiceover though. Stolen and Resident Evil Retribution double feature. It's gotta be better than the new Resident Evil.

No, it's still an opinion. Your opinion. It's not everyone's opinion, because not everyone shares your opinion. Some do and some don't. It's all subjective. If it was a fact, it would be indisputable. That's clearly not the case here.

Nic Cage just gets out of prison and is confronted by his old friend Harvey Keitel, where he tells Nic that the Declaration of Independence has been STOLEN and he needs Nics help to get it back, so he puts the dream team back together with Sean Connery, and goes after the man who stole it, Sean Bean. So they take a plane and the events of Con-Air happen, then they have to stop Sean Bean and get back the STOLEN Declaration of Independence.

-
Wow, that was ridiculous. Also, does anyone else think that Nic Cage's hairpieces should get a billing? "Nick Cage and Nick Cage's Receding Hairpiece In...." or "Nick Cage and his Raggedy Andy Hairpiece In..." Cruel, yes, but I wish he'd just own up to the fact that he's got the gene for hair loss. As with many men, he could shave the head completely and it'd not only make him look tougher, it might actually help de-age him and extend his career a bit.

re: "I love it when you say that Stolen stole from Taken when Taken is a Commando rip-off."
by buggerbugger
Even funnier is this bafflingly out-of-bloody-nowhere idea that 'Commando' is the pioneer of the whole "protagonist's child or spouse is held hostage to force the protagonist into doing something for the antagonist" plot. How old are some of you people? Do you only know films that go as far back as the 1980s or something? Christ, Hollywood had used - and reused - this particular storyline decades before 'Commando' came along. It's a staple of the thriller genre stretching back as far as the 1940s, if not earlier.
-
That said: for me, at least, it looks squarely thumbs-in-the-middle. Could be better, could be worse. But, lord, they did pick the most unfortunate name...
-
I just love expendables 2, It's not a very tight film.
-
I can't find one. I thought Stallone was a big hero of Harry's. Why no review of his latest movie? Weird.
-
You would have thought a new action film featuring classic 80s action heroes would have got a proper review. Nope, I can't find it on this site. I guess Harry and the rest didn't like it that much. It wasn't worth writing a lengthy review. Heh.
-
examples of movies before Commando, where a highly trained and skilled ex-soldier has a time limit of several hours to go alone after the kidnappers of his daughter in order to find them, kill them and rescue her before she is dead? pay attention, i want examples of movies with those specific plot points not with the generic premise dad is trying to rescue his abducted child. come on, i am waiting.
-
The Searchers, from 1956, where a Civil War vet comes home to find his daughter had been kidnapped by some (not PC, I know) and goes after them. The Fury, from 1978, where a government agent goes after his son who was kidnapped. I am sure there are more, but those were two examples that I could come up with right away.
-
and they dont have some key plot elements that Commando has: The Searchers He is not alone in his search and there is no time limit. The Fury Again he is not alone in his search and there is no time limit. The selling point of Commando is that the protagonist must rely exclusively on his unique abilities in order to save his offspring. This is not the focus of both the Fury and the Searchers.
-
But the point that, with the exception of a couple of specifics, there have been numerous movies with the same general plot. If trivial things like, there can only be a few hours, etc, then Stolen is quite a different movie than Taken and not a rip off, because Nic Cage's character is a criminal, not a "special agent" and his daughter was kidnapped by one person, not a criminal organization.
-
Nic Cage accidentally kills the Donald's Mutant Combover and must race against time to regenerate it before Trump sends a series of nasty twitter messages to his daughter!
-
Sorry it doesn't meet your bs criteria of a phony one man army, but top this for suspense, and yes, a time limit was involved: The Man Who Knew Too Much, done twice by Alfred Hitchcock in 1934 and 1956
-
Aug. 20, 2012, 1:39 p.m. CST
Nick Cage is not Liam Neeson-Well yeah because Nick Cage is actually a good actor
by Samuel Fulmer
Hey at least Cage can make the shitty movies he does better just because he's in them, can't say the same for Mr. Battleship. And I'll tell you, most of the times Neeson tries to actually act, you get shit like Kinsey!
-
And how the rip-off comes into effect is that it's about an ex-CIA (okay instead of a soldier like Commando) whose kid has been stolen and he goes on a blood soaked rampage to get her back. The Hitchcock Man Who Knew Too Much films were about everyday people whose child was abducted who they try to get him back. It's the fact that you have an ex-governement killing machine having to go after their kid that most certainly makes it a very clear rip-off. It takes the concept in different directions, but Taken is very much Commando.
-
Cage is heading down the Wesley Snipes route, where a talented actor (yes, he does or did have talent, go watch Peggy Sue Got Married if you've forgotten) and just makes a bunch of terrible life decisions and has to take on a bunch of shit movies to cover his nut. So he tries to find something redeeming in them even though he knows they are crap. Must fucking suck. I don't even particularly like the guy as an actor, but man what a kick in the gut to have to do stuff like this and know, absolutely fucking _know_, that everyone is laughing at you. Oh, well. I'm sure even the shit roles pay more than I'll make in my entire life. Fuck.

by elmo
The entire text except the last line disappeared when I posted? Basically I was saying the narrow criteria set ignores the bigger picture of the concept, and that you could change the scenario as much as you want, it's still the same thing. And I was using Mork chasing Orson for kidnapping Mearth and being told to destroy the Earth or lose his kid. Not Commando or Taken, but still the same thing. And it was funnier in my original post, you had to be there :(

Stolen Again Still Stolen 2tolen Stealers

That was pretty dead on about Wes. We share a martial arts instructor, and I've had some pretty interesting conversations with the dude. He knows the movies are crap, and in fact, compared them to making hamburgers on an assembly line, where he just shoes up and slaps in the meat, without any concern for what has come before, of what the finished product looks like. That's the direct to DVD stuff..his other work he cared about intensely.
