Ever seen a Trillionth of a Second Exposure, fast enough to see light move in the world?
Hey folks, Harry here... We're all film geeks here. Part of being a film geek is loving the tech available to capture images. There's a lot of talk about frame rates and the ability to capture increasing amounts of frames. Well a brilliant team set about trying to see how fast they could push the technology. This technology has been open-sourced with the world - so we will see experiments with the tech and we'll see how this will change our world. I love this sort of stuff, because after all... Film itself was founded to win a bet on whether or not a horse ever had all 4 legs off the ground at the same time... Now we can see a part of a laser burst as it moves it's way through the world. Mind. Blown. Of course we have TED to thank for this - but I can't wait to see the potential visual effects that folks will get by using this sort of photography. Amazing.

Peter Jackson just had an orgasm. Now he can stretch out The Hobbit to not just three films, but one film that would take 250 million years to view.

So if you were to film Schrodinger's Cat with this camera.....

Holy crap, the applications for this are numerous.
-
Such thing as science fiction. Future TSA agents are wringing their hands at the thought of this. The medical applications could seriously rearrange the way things are done. Just like the light probes in "Aliens" & "Prometheus". Very cool, indeed. Diggin' the TED.

This has to be one of the biggest leaps forward in video technology since it was invented.

That footage came out months ago

Hey guys! They're making a Green Lantern movie!
-
Instead of "bullet time" we could of had "laser time".
-
...but whatever, this video is really interesting. Super geeky, but interesting. Can't wait to see what people do with this technology.
-
Ha! I laughed at that.
-
The applications for this are indeed numerous. I'd heard about femtophotography but never seen it. So thanks, Harry! Combined with optical computing, another technology that no one knows about but is already here, this should provide crazy advances in all kinds of areas. Seeing around corners would definitely be interesting.
-
Sometime shortly after ludicrous frame rates, I reckon.

Stupid site. The YouTube embed is covered by the stupid bar on the right side.

I was listening to some of Clint Mansell's soundtrack work while watching this. Made it twice as cool!
-
Try making the comments smaller. Yeah, it's annoying but will make the video viewable on this site.

Harry keep on posting this very cool stuff because some of us dont have time to check out a zillion other sites so that we can claim to have seen stuff first and then pretend to be jaded

This is cool shit

Yeah cool stuff but won't be much of a reality until we are dead and long gone

no one does wants to hassle with practical vfx dude, sorry.
by Pixelsmack
it's a fucking sad state of visual effects we are in. cartoony bullshit, actors looking off in to nothing like zombies since all they have is a green screen to act off of...it's all shit.
-
damn, now I guess I have to keep coming here
-
then porn would take an age, like the Jurassic
-
PS Don't tell Michael Bay.
-
I'm not ashamed to admit that for a few seconds, I was trying to figure out how a movie with a CG teddy bear birthed this new technology.
-
Cooler than most movies coming out, especially the genre and sequel stuff.

Something this cool deserves more than a 480p Youtube embed.

Half is film which is timeless and beautiful. The other is studio cameras which optically look sped up at times, too fluid and just plain nasty. It`s so distracting I can`t see greater frame rates as an improvement over film in any way. Sometimes better just isn`t.
-
Saw it on a laser/tech website months ago.

It'll become a bullet time gimmick that will play itself out quickly
by nephilim138

At 1 point he said the camera is filming faster than the speed of light and we know nothing goes faster than the speed of light so this may be a fraud
-
The new theory is gravity propigates faster than light. Also, light is not a constant. So try and keep up (see what I did there, speed pun).
-
and the people bitching can go piss off. Not all of us sit at home all day trolling sites and saw this when it was originally released. Some of us got out of mom and dad's basement when we were teens and went out and got jobs.

this just in... Peter Jackon announces the Hobbit films will all be reshot and exhibited at 1 trillion fps
by TheBaxter
apparently, it makes 3D look better.

this was old news weeks ago. try harder aicn.
-
Aug. 16, 2012, 8:31 a.m. CST
also, this video would be much more impressive if it was in HD
by TheBaxter
seriously, you can shoot 1 trillion fps but you can't post it on youtube in anything better than 480p?
-

This is cool but you know its going to be used by bad people
by ajit maholtra
They said firemen would use to look into peoples houses and save them, but I think policemen would use it more to illegally search peoples houses, and government agents to spy on people. And also perverts will use it to watch people naked and having sex. Instead of those upskirt videos on porno sites, you will have femto videos. Now the guy sitting next to you in the washroom can film you on the toilet with even having to point the camera at you!
-
Aug. 16, 2012, 9:29 a.m. CST
Army guys will use it too. Now they dont have to put a mirror on a stick to look around corners

This is not really movie news because this wont be used in movies at all. It will mostly be used for evil.

Um, really? Seems to me we have Ramesh Raskar to thank for it. Thanking TED would be like thanking Loews or AMC for showing a movie, instead of Scorsese or Malik for making it.
-
I guess his talk at the conference was just posted recently, but the info has been up at his MIT website for ages. http://web.media.mit.edu/~raskar/trillionfps/
-
Did I just see a technological experiment WITH PRODUCT PLACEMENT!!!
-
Indeed.
-
and saw plenty of horses with all four feet on the ground at the same time. And I didn't even need a camera or film!
-
Yup. My thoughts exactly. The Homeland Security boys get hold of this thing and we're all screwed.
-
I think Gene Roddenberry outscooped you on that about 45 years ago.
-
It's both a facinating concept and a great presentation of it. When I look at the scale of image processing that needs to be done in order to make sense sense of the raw data from each laser ping ... it's hard to wrap my mind aorund it.
-
Now can I have a billion dollar research grant?
-
You are the original wet blanket. Please take the "shit on everything" piece of cake and be done with it. News item: Rupee88 observed a man walking on the surface of a lake today and proclaimed, "Lookit that douchenozzle, he can't even swim!" Awesome article harry, thanks.
