Rob Zombie's HOUSE OF A 1000 CORPSES

Published at:  Apr 24, 2000 4:10:12 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a bit of a different take on that Variety story that hit the trades this morning. I don't know if you like Rob Zombie or loath the man. Now, all I know is he released one of the greatest fucking CDs I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.... a bazillion times... I'm talking about that FRANKENSTEIN cd he produced last year with music from FRANKENSTEIN, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN... on of the first holy trilogies of film. Now he's set to make his own horror film... for producing that cd... I wish him the very best of luck at winning us over with this flick... It's got a helluva a title.

Harry:

I don't know how much you care about this but I, for one, am sick and tired
of the fucking pansy-ass horror movies that Whore-y-wood is churning out
these days. I have dreamed of a time where we could have the grainy-ass
goodness of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where little naked freaky vixens would
get hacked, where pretty boys would have their skins hung on a hook, where
nature's mutations would viciously kill just to please their "Mamma," where
blood was dark, and souls were darker. But I just keep getting Jennifer Love
Spewitt.

Until now...

Yesterday, I got an e-mail from Rob Zombie (a good friend of mine... I
wish!). And I had my prayers answered and my dreams fulfilled. The
man/beast who brought us Hellbilly Deluxe (with its 13 tales of cadaverous
cavorting) is promising to scare the shit out of us... he's written and he's
gunna direct a movie. A REAL scary movie - called "House of 1000 Corpses."
Freaks, Blood, Freaks, Titties, Blood, Darkness, and no "Love."

I think "Rob" sent this to all his fans and I don't know if a lot of those
fans are fans of yours, so I thought I'd give you the scoop. Here's the link
to the site which will tell you everything:

HouseOf1000Corpses.Com

Later.

The sallow-eyed Fiend of Fiends,

    More Negative Stereotyping of Corpses

    by solstiss

Once again I have to post here to complain about the sick ideas that are coming out of Hollywood. No doubt we will see to old corpse cliches in this movie - that they walk around eating people, as their rotting limbs fall from their decomposing bodies. When will people realise that real corpses are not like this? Some of my best friends are dead people and I can assure you that they have never tried to eat me! Except for that one New Years Eve but the guy was drunk, okay? For god's sake can we see some more positive media representations of corpses? And as for Mr. Zombie: You, sir, need a haircut. And a job.

First Pitched as a Crow sequel

    by mcgooo

Rob was on Howard Stern about a year ago (one of the earliest episodes of his latest Saturday night show - so the Fall of '99?) talking about his movie. He mentioned that he first approached the studio with the intention of writing and directing it. The studio intervened and said "This is a potential franchise of it's own. Let's not waste it on The Crow". I'd be willing to bet this is the same story or at least has parts of it intact.

    Not the Crow sequel

    by veidt

Actually, this sounds like it might be a re-titled version of a project originally titled The Legend of the 13 Graves that was supposed to be made at New Line. Whatever it is, it sounds pretty promising. I have a feeling that Rob knows his stuff when it comes to horror.

    "Strangeland" et al

    by smilin'jackruby

I'm not as worried that this movie will suck as much as I was about "Strangeland," that awful pic Dee Dee Snider put together (and is now putting together a sequel to). Rob Zombie was one of the guys along with Stephen Sommers and Clive Barker who did mazes this past Halloween at Universal's Halloween-thing and I must say, none of them were scary (Barker's, a repeat from the previous year I believe, was the coolest), but it showed Zombie can effectively do something other than write loud horrorshow, "Misfits" on the attack-type songs. I'm actually looking forward to this movie and will probably be first in line. But, that's from someone who has already watched their "House on Haunted Hill" DVD twice and thinks William Malone's commentary is just as much of a party as the movie itself. For all those that hate "House on Haunted Hill," perhaps you weren't drunk enough or your expectations were skewed for the pic. For me, it receives the 1999 "Deep Rising" Memorial Award for Big Studio Schlock.

The only musician I'd trust to write and direct a movie is Nick

    by horrorbiz777

If anyone here knows Nick Cave and heard his music you know as well as I that the man knows about something called "subtlety". Something which Herr Zombie does not know. Not to say he's a bad musician. He's actually pretty decent in this age of cookie cutter blah bands. But dammit, are you telling me that a man who thinks that Blood Feast and 2000 Maniacs are the greatest films ever made is going to scare me with a movie ? Noooooooooooooo, I'm afraid that it takes more than going BOO, to scare. Zombie could make a cool gore movie, but unless it has characterisation, good (interesting) dialogue and an inwardly logical story then it should flop. From what I know of Zombie he'll make a stylish, gory, campy film. He'll have all his friends appear on a soundtrack album (God not another one) which will feature pounding rock which will have nothing to do with the movie, the dialogue will be straight from Hammer films and it'll look just like a music video. Now I'm the last one to like the new trend of "Dawson's Creek" horror films BUT I did enjoy "Scream" and I've been watching horror movies ever since Halloween came out in theatres so I can fairly say that I've seen enough good horror movies and really shitty horror movies to know the difference. Scream was scary, had a story, decent acting, a disturbing conclusion (tell me they would have done this film's ending in the same way after that Columbine TV news special BS ?) Granted this is merely one opinion and I'm sure 9 people out of 10 disagree but for those 1 out of 10, you know what I'm talkin' bout. Cheers HB.

This is my first talk back, but I just could help it I suppose... HAve any of you people bitching about this project watched the video excerpts on the site where he talks about what he likes in horror and what he doesn't, he complains about all of the same things that you are... His knowledge of the Genre is encyclopedic... his whole life revolves around it in many ways... I on't doubt that this will be something that we haven't seen in sometime from the genre... and to the person that suggested Nick CAve, that would indeed be something to behold, but I'd expect something more like Deliverance from him given his obsession with the American South and degenerate nature.... and so ends my first talk back

For the most part, I agree with Rolande! I too miss those great Italian splatter fests! I'd much rather watch a gut-wrenching zombie munch-a-thon than some snooze inducing Scream clone. Yes, movies like The Exorcist are true horror, but you can't deny the fact that movies like Zombie, Demons, or Dellamorte Dellamore are also great movies in their own right. If you people think that the only good horror movies come from America, I strongly suggest you expand your horizons a bit and check out some imported horror. Trust me, I did, and I'm glad I ever did. I suggest looking into the films of Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, and others like those ones. I think you'd all be pleasantly surprised.

    ROB ZOMBIE: THE 90'S HAS-BEEN

    by sleep

Rob Zombie, was in a a top band, and he wrote real cool twisted lyrics, with raw music you can chew through, like a baby eating his way through a sea of rabies infested dead children.
When the Hillbilly delux came out, I immediately bought it with excitment, only to feel cheated after listening to it. What i thought would have been a Astro creep 2000, turned out to be a bunch of Marilyn Manson rejects.
short intros were actualy proper tracks, Dragula was the only good tune on the album, even though a three year old could shit out scarier stuff than his lyrics.
Rob Zombie is the rock version to the Walt Disney corporation, who promises the kids everything, but gives them nothing for their money. Marilyn Manson is the true genius, his lyrics are clever, his music is diverse and original with each album. Rob Zombie on the other hand is a 90's has-been, Americas answer to Oasis, who should take a tip or two from the true music artists such as: Marilyn Manson, Dave Wyndorf of Monster Magnet, and Metallica. be diverse, Be original, be you.

I think this has more potential as a retail franchise..."'Rob Zombie's House of 1,000 Corpses', y'know, it's right next door to 'Edna's House of Wigs' and 'Mr. Jeffrey's House of Large Sizes'". Instead of playing muzak over the PA they could drive paying customers out with 1989-sounding techno-metal courtesy of Monseiur Zombie himself.

    by the killer-goat

Err, sleep, don't you mean "Alternica"? Regarding Metallica's latest foray into yet another re-interpretation of their older 80's Has Been music, hearing an orchestrated album of all their bests, complete with woodwinds, brass and (gasp!) piccoletto percussion sure as hell struck a chill in my soul, but not for the right reasons.
The Moody Blues (70's Has Beens) were even scarier with their supporting symphony, also for all the wrong reasons.
Bring on the Freshly dug Zombie!!!! Metallica would not serve as the best example of comparison lately, so let 'm lie down in their cribs, er, crypts while Zombie dances a deafening jig on their graves.

    by gustav niemann

A lot of people seem very eager to dismiss Rob and that's a real shame. I think people should have a look at the film's web site and listen to what the man has to say. There's plenty of clips of him where he hit upon most of the key problems with horror films today. Besides which, how could anyone cool enough to wear a T-shirt of "The Black Cat" be considered "stupid," or "mtv?" Let's not jump the gun here people, have some faith. Also, look at the films Rob references in the clips on the site, he's got a solid view of things as far as I'm concerned.

    Crow 3 = Legend of 13 Graves?!?

    by jeffv

As I'd heard it, Zombie's Crow script became a stand-alone called Black Rider, because they thought it was good enough to be its own franchise (read: too good to be a Crow sequel). BUT, according to IMDB (and, yes, I know they can be wrong) he was fired from the Crow and then he turned the script into Legend of 13 Graves, which would now seem to be this movie. Is there any truth to this?

He's always has been inspired by old-school horror...hell, his favorite tv show as a kid was The Munsters. I have faith that he'll bring us a good horror movie...and i hope he could bring back the whole White Zombie group back (that's including J. Yeunger on guitars and Sean Yselt on the Bass) to do the soundtrack, mostly without lyrics, just creepy riffs and licks.

    ZOmbies!

    by bo_d75

Let us all not forget DAvid Fincher a fine movie director that jumped from directing music videos to the 'big sreen'. Now I'm not sure if Fred Durst will be able to make a good movie or not but I was pleased with his directing of that one Korn video...can't think of the name of it right now. But, Zombie's animation sequence in the B&B movie was quite awesome. And we all know that the third Crow movie couldn't, if done by R. Zombie, be any worse than what we will all be punished to shorty. Some of his music is enjoyable but most of all it doesn't take itself too seriously. While some may have problems with that...I say good for Rob and with his seemingly extensive knowledge and passion with the 'old school' horror movies I think it could prove to be....well, enjoyable. and that's what it's all about. I definetely don't think it will be the most frightening movie ever made nor should it be expected to be. In a world of Screams and horror movies being remade day after day, poorly I might add, he should be able to fit right in. If a truly scary movie should be made it should invovle the director(s) of the many videos from the band Tool. OR it should be done by Chris Cunningham the man responsible for the coolest and most disturbing music video "Come to Daddy" by techno artist Aphex Twin. Both videos seem to have an effect in the House on Haunted Hill movie i.e. the fast-shaking of the doctor, and the monster sequence when the 'evil' attacked the girl with the video camera. Anyway, just my two cents. Maybe someone else out there knows what the hell I'm talking about. Oh well, if no one listens to me we can always look forward to maybe an NSYNC movie, a 'Thriller'-video remake directed by Britiny Spears, or made a sequel to the scariest movie ever-made!!!"Cruel Intentions"...damn the shit scared the HELL out of me...

    by halloweenie

...film that scared the living crap outta me...when i was a kid. I couldn't watch it when i was a kid by my self. that could qualify for scary. I think if a horror movie has a lot of darkness to it, it helps the scare-factor. One example is(this isn't the film that scared the crap outta me though) is HALLOWEEN. It's so freaking dark, it looks real. The night really is that dark. I still see kids who see Halloween for the first time and get scared shitless when they see micheals white mask come out of the darkness. Now the film i was talking about is an Italian film called DEMONS. It's set in a theatre (very good setting) so it is already dark. Since it's an Italian film, it's naturally gory, balanced with cool demon myths and great music. I love it, and i'd recomend it to any horror fan!

    by etnabob

Now that you're an adult, you probably won't find ANY movies that really scare you, right? Well, how about settling for an "Upsetting" movie instead? (I don't like using that over-used word 'disturbing'.) If you want to get upset, I'd recommend the Dutch version of "The Vanishing" (not the lousy American version). Another good one to keep you off kilter is "Salo: The 180 Days of Sodom", an Italian flick that might be hard to find these days, but is definitely dreadful. I wouldn't call either of these "horror" movies, really, but they should invoke emotions of horror from within you.
