AICwHK: BOURNE, Bond, PARANORMAN, A New JURASSIC PARK Movie, And More!!
Hey folks, Harry here...
I love Spy films. BOURNE LEGACY is a wonderful addition to the entire BOURNE universe that Universal has been crafting. This one expands that world beyond Bourne and opens up the scale of how TREADSTONE reacted to what Jason was doing in the previous feature.
That said, as much as I loved this film, it just got me thing about the awesome spy films that I've seen over the years - and just decided I should celebrate that, while I get excited for Sam Mendes' SKYFALL.
But I also had to do some talking about PARANORMAN. As much as I love this episode, I loved shooting this week with Quint on our dedicated JAWS spectacular that will hit next week. Now, here ya go....
Feel free to embed, tweet, share through the world. The show needs all the help you can muster!

How was the action compared to the Avengers?? Probably crap because Harry got a BJ from Chris Evens. Your imature hatred of DKR is pretty sad Harry...most people liked if not loved DKR..hense why it has remained number one at the box office for three weeks..which is rare nowadays

Harry for the next 10 years when you review an action movie will you begin it a comparison to Dark Knight Rises? I can understand you didn't like the film, but it's starting to look like you have a vendetta against it. I've seen both films as of yesterday and I will give my repeat business to rises. I guess it's true about the pwesents.

You should watch DKR againb Harry, really. I was HIGHLY disappointed on first viewing, watched it again and thought it was rather brilliant, in spite of it's flaws...
by FreeBeer
...First time I watched it I wanted it to be PERFECT, so any flaws stuck out like a sore thumb. Upon second viewing, knowing what to expect, I really enjoyed it. Great show this week by the way, I think Skyfall is going to be really something.

How many weeks did Transformers stay number 1 at the B.O.? No indication, at all, of the quality of a film. More of an indication that people have low standards and like crap.
-
Harry would have written about it in a review for the film complaining that someone let her in to see the movie when obviously he thinks any outburst is grounds for being taken out a film, and mostly if it is a child making noise who may or may not be mentally retarded. (see his review of Brave) Glad we got to see some more 'pwesents' in this episode so we know to look forward to a stellar review of Paranorman Oh and 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' the best Bond film? Wow, just wow
-
Why the hell is there no edit button in this talkback? I used to love this site, now all its news has been regurgitated from sites like Deadline,Collider, and Hollywood Reporter. What happened to the real news and to the movie spoilers? One the things Harry states in the video that he had 2 minutes for a question with Frank Marshall, he asks the same question Collider asked him in a interview a week ago. I know your not a reporter, but why waste a question that's been asked on numerous other sites. I guess the site is really going downhill. It's sad this used to be the place I checked about twice a day now I'll probably just take it out of my bookmarks.
-
..and that pisses me off for some strange reason! I want to hate it and even be a little snooty but Harry's frickin enthusiasm shines through, talk about pure innocence and gleefulness! I suppose it's actually jarring to see anything that isn't packed with snideness nowadays.

And Spielberg needs to salvage JP before some twat comes along and does as much damage to it as JPIII did. Honestly, and this is coming from someone structuring his career out of paleo and geo... Jp was never meant to be a franchise- it was well enough left alone after tlw... But if they must, it needs to really respect Crichton's work, or you are just making another piece of crap where the plot is people get eaten, the end. Which may be what the braindead masses react to, but Crichton's legacy deserves better.

Great opening with the nod to the opening pre-credit sequence. Funny, but having grown up with Bond in the 60's and 70's just seeing those white dots march across the screen you'd get excited as hell because you knew the world you were about to enter. Nice retrospective to some of my favorite old spy films...esp. Three Days of the Condor and Marathon Man. Most of the Bond films had an incredible look to them so I wish you'd given a nod to Roger Deakins who is a master and is going to give Skyfall a look that'll make you want to just fall into the film. Very nice PPK, btw. You can't pick one up like that so easily anymore.

of Michael Cain's Harry Palmer spy series? Shame on you Harry.
-
It's unfair to compare this movie to TDKR, they're nothing alike. Also, as to why Harry keeps taking shots at it...I think he made it clear when Avengers came out that he preferred Marvel's movies to Nolan's. It didn't seem to me like TDKR was given a fair chance, like Harry had already made up his mind. Considering Harry's Inception review- I'd guess he's written off Nolan as someone he just doesn't like, and that's why there's the negativity. Also, I'm pretty sure it's TREADSTONE, not TRENTSTONE. Christ. Unless that was an audio gaffe or they changed the name for this one.
-
I admire Harry's passion for movies but man oh man has he been off lately; praising every movie that gets drubbed by the rest of the world.

Aug. 9, 2012, 3:57 p.m. CST
winteriscoming, et al., it is completely appropriate to compare TDKR to Bourne Legacy. Here's why:
by SergeantStedenko
1. Both are about antiheroes who exist in the grey areas: one is a vigilante with a secret identity and the other is a secret agent programmed to do terrible things in the name of freedom and democracy. 2. Both protagonists are pariahs, outcasts hunted by the same people they once worked for. 3. Both protagonists have almost super human combat training that gives them an edge over their enemies. 4. Both are "gritty" action movies with dull color palettes, grotesquely undeveloped two-dimensional caricatures for characters and contrived twisty endings.

Let me get this straight. A studio sends Harry some crappy swag, or gives him an advanced screening, and he starts word-masturbating about how awesome a movie is, whether he's seen it or not? I know his reviews are guided by gifts, and now his videos are too.

Harry reviews this site has become like your body, fat, bloated and of need of severe rehabilitation. You should just give it up. Please beg McWeeny to come back the day he left was the beginning of the downfall of this site. At least when I read his reviews he doesnt give away the whole movie. I don't understand how you can praise movies like Crystal Skull,Godzilla,Van Helsing and Green Lantern then crap on The Dark Night Rises and Inception among others. Im not mad at the fact the you didn't like them, but the fact that you fell asleep in one and still reviewed it and the other you went out of your way to spoil the whole movie wasn't cool. I really wouldn't review a film I fell asleep in and the way you spoiled rises was just a dick move. Maybe if you ate right and rolled around for a few minutes every day you'd lose some weight. Why don't you go to the local jr. College and learn proper sentence and paragraph structure. Read some of Ebert or Mcweenys reviews for a start, because yours suck. I really used have respect for your passion about film, now I think the only passion you have left is probably for brownies and cheetos.

Harry can sometimes annoy me. His strange need to reference obscure cinema as well as make every movie he saw as a kid some deeply personal experience irritates me. Sometimes I want to smack him after seeing one of these videos and tell him he is being overly sentimental. Still, I completely agree with him on TDKR. That movie was joyless and overlong. It was like Nolan had a headache while filming it. It was one-toned, had too many characters, and fuck, one of the saddest things about it was its potential. It could have been the best one, but Nolan fumbles because he doesn't know how to film intimate scenes, slow down into a character drama, or do anything that doesn't feel like a climax. It's frankly exhausting to sit through three hours of "BUMMM!" and yes I thought Inception was irritating too. Nolan has forgotten how to make something fun to watch. It all comes across as hollow now... Here is my own review of it: http://nickaxlineoraltraditions.blogspot.com/2012/07/review-of-nolans-dark-knight-rises.html But I do love Harry for his passion for film. I know why he can love shitty films. It's fun to get caught up in the joy, the pulp, the story. To be swept up, however, briefly in another world. Fucking awful movies can do the same thing to me: The Mummy series, Syfy's Mansquito, Tranformers 1 & 3, even Marvel's movies can fall under this category of being kind of bad but still fun to watch. What's wrong with that? It's better than sitting through three hours of Nolan's tired existential shit-gas and being forced to feel something with blaring music and tight editing... fuck that. don't get me wrong, I love TDK and BB, but Jesus, if Nolan gets it wrong, it can be fucking painful.

It's probably never gonna happen, but Christopher Nolan directing a James Bond movie... Now, that would royally piss off Fatman.
by Mr. Pricklepants
-
But, Bond DID wear a pink tie. And I don't have a problem with Bond being out of shape. He is a spy and most spies are not swimsuit models. Plus, Connery's bloated and out of shape is everyone else's in shape. In DAF Connery is having fun with the role and bringing the audience if you are willing along for the ride. It's directed by Guy Hamilton, the guy who directed the best Bond film, Goldfinger and co-stars Charles Gray as the best Blofeld. (Sorry Harry.)
-
As much as I disliked TDKR, I would love to see Nolan direct a Bond film.
-
His lack of proof reading is reaching epic levels of retardation, lol on purpose? Bane takes over Gotham because most of the police are trapped in an underground tunnel, what tha fuck? Well made but very poorly written, a guy with a mask on needs some origin story, couldn't hear him, the warsaw ghetto underground resistance angle (bane as Hitler) was lame, to Robyn or not to Robyn - make your mind up, great performance from Tom Hardy? What performance under the mask and mumbling? Wasn't he supposed to be fighting machine breaking bones and snapping necks with scientific efficiency? Compare TDK, not TDKR with The Avengers or fuck your mother. And the show rocks
-
Sorry, but time and again Knowles has shown himself to be a buffoon who knows little about movies and has even less taste. Harry Knowles redefines the word dim-wit and I really cannot understand why anyone would take him seriously.
-
What did you think about TDKR?
-
simply because they have a spy as the hero. They are adventure movies like Indiana Jones or Pirates of the Caribbean. You want to watch a real spy film, watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or Scorpio with Burt Lancaster. And no, the Mission Impossible and Bourne series are not spy movies either.
-
Great spy film. Let's face it, hardly anyone saw it.
-
I have never been let down by a movie as severely as I was three weeks ago, and your review was among the very few to articulate why. Thank you. Like you, I am utterly befuddled by the absence of any populist elements.
-
Bond requests his double knits in Live and Let Die and rocks Members Only in whatever films Timothy Dalton made, pink tie is downright upscale in comparison.
-
Ye, TDKR was shitty for a lot of reasons. So many, in fact, that it took me about a day to process why I was so frustrated with that goddam movie. If Nolan had played up the populist themes, TDKR could have been a classic, but he seemed to have been hesitant on going down that road 100%. I have no idea why.

Austin Powers is the reason this movie has a bad rap.. If a person wants to really see a bad Bond film then take a look at You Only Live Twice or any of Brosnan's follow ups to Goldeneye. Thunderball has just about everything a person could want in a bond film, a badass villain, a very sexy bond girl, an even sexier bond villainess, and one of Connery's best lines, after Bond walks into the bathroom and sees a woman taking a bath, "Aren't you in the wrong room?", Bond quips, "Not from where I'm standing". Come on guys give Thunderball another chance, wipe away the Austin Powers bullshit and just enjoy the flick. I know Goldfinger gets most the attention for being the Connery Bond classic, but I have disagree and say that Thunderball is the Connery Bond classic.
-
Bruce Wayne, vigilante and philanthropist, emerges as a force for good. Combating poverty and institutional evil. Enter The Joker. Seeking to set Gotham aflame but failing when the PEOPLE on the ferries prove to have a newfound moral compass. Gotta give Harry credit for having the balls to give TDKR a hard time, even after most of you lunatics crucified him for it. The only other person aside Spielberg who I can see actually doing justice to Crichton's novels would be maybe Joss Whedon
by wcolbert
Or someone like him, who has a strong background in science thriller/ sci-fi and a strong sense of fidelity to the parent material without feeling that all-too-common obnoxious impulse to paste your own ego all over the movie and "take it in a new direction". If there's one thing that really irks audiences, it's directors who try to make the movie "their own" and forsake what it was that made the material work in the first place. The director needs to be smart as a whip, and have the capacity to see Jurassic Park as more than an opportunity for a few hundred million in box office or a script that involves people being eaten and chased. The books were quite a bit more involved than that, and moreover, they were CHARACTER driven, with dinosaurs coming secondary as a means to an end, part of the ride. There needs to be some continuity as well - so it'd be great if Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards (Tim and Lex) could return and lead roles. It needs to really delve deeper into INGEN's inner workings, as well as BIOSYN corporation. Ingen's "dirty little secrets" were weakly hinted at in JPIII, but it was hardly relevant in its brevity. Another topic to cover would be the patenting and ownership of genes - something Crichton delved more into in another of his books (NEXT is pretty good). If Ingen patents a dino genome, and Biosyn makes a similar but not exact copy, will that creature still behave as real dinosaurs did? It's not really possible to know if Ingen's Dinosaurs behave as real dinosaurs, considering their genomes were tampered with to complete the code in the first place. I wonder if they'll involve reverse engineering from birds in some capacity - according to Dr. Horner, they were going to, at least, as of 2004, but many attempts to jump start the project have come and gone since. It would certainly be a safer bet than trying to splice in west african frog genes, considering they're about as closely related to dinosaurs as WE are to the frogs. The synapsids and therapsids (particularly early mammals) split off at about the same time as the ancestral dinos did from their respective branches, after all. And of course there are the creatures that made it to the mainland in south america in the book and developed a method for coping with their lysine deficiency. The paleontological developments since JPIII also offer up a lot of new looks at what dinosaurs were REALLY like, for the general public. Some, we now know, had irridescent feathers. Close relatives of T-Rex are now known to have had feathers. many new species have since been discovered. And man, would it be something to see one of the super sauropods in the flesh - a creature half a football field in length and weighing perhaps over 100 tons - the brachiosaur of the first film would seem like a house pet in comparison. They might even throw in some non-dinosaurians, perhaps some Permian members - pelycosaurs for example, or maybe gorgonopsids, or some of the impossibly bizarre creatures of the paleozoic. It's not as if most of the denizens of Jurassic Park were even from the Jurassic. Many were late cretaceous.

hallmitchell, I own Munich, top notch "spy flic" I think The Debt is an underrated/overlooked "spy flic"...great cast of character actors. ultra...keep making me laugh brother!
-
Sad, fat virgin fucks. You should get down on your knees and be thankfull you received such a calibre movie in your lifetime.
-
Im sorry to hear you didnt quite "get" TDKR or INCEPTION. Mouth breathers like you and that fat fuck Harry are the reason we keep getting Big Mommas House sequels. Liking shitty films, and trying to be elitist when quality gets released in an attempt to be edgy and some how more "refined" than the rest of us. Stop thinking your better than the 99% of us and just enjoy your life without being so ignorant.
-
Having an opinion is fine, but don't pretend that one is a majority opinion. And by the way, TDK is TDKR without Hathaway. CHOPPED
-
I'm glad Harry has an opinion that's not the issue. My issue is the fact that he rips it every chance he gets. If I hadn't read his praising reviews of shit films then I probably wouldn't have a problem. How do you write a review for a film you admittedly fell asleep in. Harry is too busy kissing ass and the site suffers for it. There hasn't been a true reviewer/reporter since Moriarty left. Grade school kids have a better understanding of the written language. I guess if you don't provide a set visit or send Harry a box of jujubees you won't get a good review.
-
I love Harry's enthusiasms for a movie he likes. But give it up after a while. So you were disappointed by TDKR. There are many who felt it was very cinematic with it's action scenes and not limp, myself included. I'm intrigued by Bourne Legacy, but it's not on the top of my list. The action looks to be the same with previous installments and action from the Daniel Craig Bond films. While exciting it has the same I've seen before it seems. TDKR had scenes, especially in IMAX, that were breathtaking. But hey that's my opinion. I respect Harry's as well even if I don't agree with it.

TDKR wasnt as good as TDK, but it was still pretty good. All in all, a great trilogy.

go to youtube and type in Star Trek: Phase 2 if you don't know who that is. The better of the Star Trek fan film series with top notch effects, a bridge from TOS that's an exact duplicate of sets that were torn down, and guest stars from the original series (like Takai, Koenig and Whitney among others.) It's a shame they can't snag Shatner as Kirk cause no one i know would care that he doesn't look like he did in the original series (he's still the shat as kirk, amiright?) The only downside is you have actors playing Kirk, Spock and McCoy that neither look like the characters nor can act their way out of a paper bag. Had they played other characters (like in some of Pad's books), it may have worked better cause no comparisions would be made. Still, an amazing acheivement and you could ask Cawley how he was able to do all this for legal reasons....
-
but i have a feeling that if Ellison knows who Harry is, he thinks he's silly or if he got on the show it'd be the harlan "it's all about me" show, which is fine by me! Harry knows about "ego" so i don't think he'd have a problem with that. (zing.)

it is a fact. Either you like it, or not.

dude if you have to write that much to say that you didn't like TDKR it's like admitting you are full of shit.
-
I am saying that TDKR was pretty shitty. Don't worry about it, life will go on. Sorry for insulting your religion.

Well, for those who didn't like TDKR, there's always BATMAN & ROBIN. It's Harry's favorite Batman movie (even if he won't admit it).

That said, as much as I loved this film, it just got me thing about the awesome spy films that I've seen over the years

Who's this Trent Stone you keep mentioning?
by REGINALDVELJOHNSONS_SEMINALFLUID
Because if he is as smooth as Keith Stone, I want to know more.

It seems like this is a labor of love for you, Harry and I love all of the fun movie music and the attention to detail, lighting and special effects. However, the show seems split between wanting to be a wacky "Pee-Wee Herman"/kid type/fun show and a serious film discussion show, which for me doesn't work at all. My own preference would be to see this show become a more zany kid friendly eudtainment show because I think you could do that very well and I think your personality would serve this very well. It could still have reviews and be educational, but would be more so in the "Brak"/"Pee-Wee"/"Muppet" style. Apologies, again for the critique, I can tell this is a labor of love.

Nolan's films seem to inspire the loyalty of the apple faithful. Nolan can do no wrong.. And if you don't agree your opinion does not matter. There were parts of TDK and TDKR that i liked, loved and even downright loathed. Bane while better represented just felt wrong. The weird Connery voice didn't help. The film .. Just felt like it so gad to connect to the first to make it epic. That reveal just felt cheap.. The character never got a xhance to be interesting . Then was dead. The whole film felt like they couldn't just end it.. With Wayne as the vindicated hero.. The truth knowm.. Batman under the bat signal cut to credits. The hero's journey personified.

Great Idea!!!
-
Great idea. Brad Bird's expert storytelling and knowledge of animation would be perfect.
-
Harry's talking about this great ending action scene and it was just terrible! TDKR was so much better than this film or turd! What the fuck movie was he watching!? Were you high during the movie that it just blew your mind? I honestly don't understand how anyone can say this movie has better action scenes than TDKR......
-
I admire your enthusiasm, Harry, but the reason the first three Bourne movies worked was because of the tension. They were great scripts! The Bourne Legacy script is a turkey. Even after half an hour I hadn't a clue what the point of it was. By that time I didn't care any more and left. Please bring back Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon. What a massive let down.
