Where’s the Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day’s TYPEWRITER!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that David Cronenberg’s creepy tentacled monster has a huge vagina, but there is still a little shock value to me seeing today’s photo of the director on the set of Naked Lunch, holding that lady-parts-and-tentacles creature, surrounded by bondaged Mugwumps.
In related news, David Cronenberg is awesome, this film is awesome and he needs to do another body horror film as soon as he possibly can get around to it.

Hoping to see a Directors cut of Nightbreed on Bluray soon. I thought Cronenberg was great in it.

Your the greatest.

Just opened here in Australia. Awesome film and a lot of it harkens back to old-school Cronenberg. I've never read Naked Lunch but I always loved the film.

Great shoot, surprising it's never been widely introduced before.

yeah that's what i thought of the man, but i have lost all my respect for him after listening to John Carpenter's experience when he met him. He talks about it in his interview after 22.10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-DJtmE9gvQ Cronenberg is an asshole
-
History students learn 'Who, said what, to whom, with what purpose and in what context'. just because Carpenter doesn't like Cronenberg, is no reason to dismiss his life and work. Who knows what prejudices Carpenter might already have had about Cronenberg before he met him, or what sort of a day Cronenberg was having. Cronenberg never directed 'Memoirs of an Invisible Man' so he wins.
-
i didnt dismiss his work. I dismissed his personality. Besides Carpenter seems a very open and straight-forward guy who minds his own business. Do you really think that he lied about the incident? And having a bad day prevents you from even looking at your talker? really? And since you made this into a competition (i didnt) Carpenter directed the Thing. That beats every horror movie that Cronenberg ever did.
-
Saw Cronenberg at some low-rent art thing that he probably didn't want to be at. Seemed like a nice guy to me.
-
Isn't that sort of arguing who's better between the Beatles and the Stones? I agree with judenw, Carpenter made The Thing, in my opinion the greatest horror movie ever made, but Cronenberg still makes good movies these days and is therefore still relevant. Hell, in the case of History of Violence and Eastern Promises, fucking awesome movies. Also, Scanners, Shivers, Rabid, The Fly, and his masterpiece, Videodrome show he wasn't a slouch during Carpenter's heydey either. They've also made their fair share of shit between them (my hope is Carpenter gets back on form for just one more classic,). I'd personally plump for Carpenter over Cronenberg as to who's films i like more, but jesus, c'mon.. it's a pretty close race, no? CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?
-
Fuck Croneneberg. He's a wannabe David Lynch who has made a couple of good movies but ultimately is overrated! Fuck him, Cronenberg couldn't hold Carpenter's Jock!

Why can't we all just unite and go back to shitting on Bay and McG?
by kindofabigdeal
Cronenberg = Carpenter = Lynch. However Naked Lunch and every Lynch movie make me uncomfortable. But it's the uneasiness that I love about them. Long live the flesh.

A full color version of that photo (cropped to focus on Cronenberg) was used for the cover of Cronenberg on Cronenberg published by Faber and Faber, a collection of interviews with him. I believe the photo was taken by Attila Dory. Another book from the same publisher, Lynch on Lynch, made the Cronenberg book looks bare bones by comparison because of the wealth of background information and how extensively it covers Lynch's early years. I highly recommend both books though.

Cronenburg an asshole? Is that why he has the same crew (prod designer, cinematographer, editor, music, costume (yes, I know its his sis), etc) work
by openthepodbaydoorshal
with him film after film after film?
-
that doesn't say much.

judenw-just saying that if Cronenberg's an asshole, then he would be an intolarable
by openthepodbaydoorshal
asshole on set. And who would work with that time and again?
-

Aloof and perhaps a little full of himself, yes. But he also referred to him as an -old friend-
-
While a pretty brilliant adaptation of an un-adaptable book. The movie's still a bit slow. Maybe more than a bit. The poster, on the other hand, is incredible. And hangs proudly in my bedroom.

I think our entire Canadian film industry is based on him, Atom Egoyan and Anne of Green Gables
by tangcameo
Of all the Canadian productions that Canada makes for itself (and not for the US or in conjunction with places like England, Germany or South Africa) we make unprofitable arthouse, profitable straight to-DVD-or-Malaysia-2am-TV schlock that nobody ends up watching, and syrupy sentimental Victorian-to-1920s era family drama that's just a copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy-of-a... of that 80s Anne of Green Gables miniseries

Watch the behind the scenes doc on History of Violence. It shows that Cronenberg likes to have fun when he's making movies, and he doesn't make a lot of 'fun' movies. He comes across as a pretty nice guy. Who am I kidding? you won't you'll just come back with some line about knowing lots of directors who have fun, work with their friends all the time and act graciously towards their fans and peers that are still assholes.
