    by JIm Tshirt

If memory serves, there wasn't really anything on the cutting room floor from Raiders. The Beard had an impossibly short production schedule, so they pretty much used everything. And I liked Crystal Skull; it should have been a lot better, but the fan service was great and Ford was spot-on.

    by Elevator Killer

Yea, its not that bad... not that great, but not that bad. I never really try to pawn it off as some great thing... but anyone that thinks its that god awful thing, but doesn't see all the same silly shit in Last Crusade and Temple of Doom.... needs to watch those films again without there 'child' or 'nostalgic' eyes. Raiders is a great film, all the rest are more or less the same with different pluses and minuses throughout.

Would love to unsee Crystal Skull. Will stick with my Trilogy DVD's. Even if you can get past the hokey story in crystal skull there's no excuse for the shitty CGI mongose, the shitty ants, the shitty snake and the crapy swinging from trees and if TOD finished after the raft scene it would still be a better film than Crystall Skull.

Anyone else discarding the carboard outershell and chucking Crystal Skull in the bin?

    by chronicallydepressedlemming

Cos that's my plan. I own BOTH Alien movies (Alien and Aliens, there are no others) on bluray, no boxed set. I own The Matrix, there was no trilogy, I own the TWO Spiderman movies (1 and 2) and I'll own the ONLY 3 Indiana Jones movies. Some might say I'm kidding myself, but it's a blu ray collection I can be proud of. Imagine if I had kids in the future and I caught one putting THE WRONG INDY MOVIE in the player to watch, curious as to why his dad never mentioned it? I don't plan to suffer that moment!

But stand by my previous statement. RAIDERS never needed a sequel. I liked CRUSADE a lot when I was younger but when I watch it now its just a pale imitation of RAIDERS. Plus Indiana's character is reduced by having his father in the picture.

  • That's how bad Indy 4 really is.

  • And that 69.99 version with Crystal Skull. Both have the same value/film. Let's see which version sells the most. Heck, put the 3 movie version as 59.99, and we'll still see which version sells the most.

It's a fantastic movie, a blast of cinematic ingenuity and imagination (and a lovely show of spirit in that attitude of damn the torpedoes that's so captivating to watch) and a truly worhty sequel to REAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK... though technically it's a prequel. But the point remains. Lame Crusade and Crystal Skullfuck? Fuck those movies.

    by Domi'sInnerChild

  • Worst then bad, it's so terrible and retard it belongs to the film carrers of such shits like Michael Bay or JJ Abrams, not to the ilustrious career of such a grand filmmaker like Spielberg. Crystal Skullfuck is a shit stain in an otherwise quite fantastic career. And to think that after MUNICH, a movie i loved dearly, i had though that Spielberg was making a turn in his career and making more movies like it, a turn more for the adult, real-life and cerebral. Spielberg was so fantastic in MUNICH, it felt like he had been reinvigorated, it felt like he was a young man again, full of verve, making movies from the gut and brain alike. But nooooo! Crystal Skullfuck is both a disapointment and a terrible movie that is a waste of time and good will. I can't fucking believe it exists, and it was made by who made it. Unbelievable! Everytime i look at that movie cover's i keep hoping to the the names of Michael Bay or JJ Abrams in it, in the hope that Spielberg truly was not responsible for that shit.

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 12:33 p.m. CST

    They're in the wrong order.

    by Steve Emshoff

millermeusa got it right. Temple of Doom takes place in 1935. Raiders of the Lost Ark takes place in 1936. Therefore, Temple of Doom should be disc #1 and Raiders of the Lost Ark should be disc #2. I'll just switch them myself.

  • My balls are clenching in anticipation.

  • ...Seriously. Jesus Christ. Recently re-watched it after a few years of not having seen it, and was shocked at how well it holds up as its own thing. It's now become a nerd-tribe meme to show how "hardcore" your street-cred is these days to bash this movie, when most folks probably haven't even seen it since its original 2008 theatrical run.

  • Its like what the Star wars prequels did to the original trilogy. I just don't want to watch it anymore. I used to watch the stalwarts trilogy once every 2 years so... Have not watched it for ten years now... Sad.

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 12:37 p.m. CST

No deleted scenes from Raiders? Not true

    by Turd_Is_Floating_Underneath_The_Gravy

There were plenty, most famous of all being a scene where a young German soldier is commanded to execute Sallah, but can't do it. Apparently they used a member of the crew, not an actor, to fill in for the scene, and he gave a tremendously moving performance, reducing Spielberg and the rest of the crew to tears. Other deleted scenes include Indy lashing himself to the periscope of the sub, and the FULL fight between Indy and the Arab swordsman. Contrary to the myth that it was never filmed, due to Ford having a severe case of the shits, they actually filmed nearly all of it. The Making of Indiana Jones book confirms this. The whole story about improvising the gun to take the guy out quickly was just one of those movie anecdotes concocted by Spielberg for the purposes of myth-making.

  • Hey folks, isn't Indiana Jones a neat character? He must have quite a backstory of how he grew over the years to become the man we see in RAIDERS? Well, fuck all that: here's a sequence showing that he gained all his iconic character traits in the course of an afternoon while a boy scout. Oh, also his mother died and his father neglected him so young Indy was very sad (obligatory Patton Oswalt reference).

  • Comprende?

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 12:44 p.m. CST

Throw in Temple of Doom for free....

    by TheFifthCylon

"so just think of it like you're paying $17.50 a piece for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, LAST CRUSADE and all the extra goodies... and they're throwing in CRYSTALL SKULL for free, if that makes you feel any better." ------- I'd feel better if I paid 17.50 a piece for Raiders, Last Crusade, and Crystal Skull, and then they threw in Temple of Doom for free. And then I'd put Temple of Doom in the corner of shame in my basement and occasionally go down and shake my head disapprovingly at the disc that was sitting in a puddle of dog piss. Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is an awesome movie and a fantastic conclusion to the Indiana Jones Trilogy. Temple of Doom is a wart on this franchise's ass.

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 12:53 p.m. CST

People who complain about Crystal Skull.....

    by TheFifthCylon

....are fucking morons who must also hate Raiders and Last Crusade. Raiders, Last Crusade, and Crystal Skull are such a great trilogy. They have the same look, feel, and tone. You can't like one and dislike one of the others. Then you have Temple of Doom -- a turd that doesn't feel like it belongs in the same series.

That was fantastic! RAIDERS is gorgeaus to look at in Black& White indeed! The guy who is doing the presentation is right, that "bland" scene with Marcus exposing the ark to Indy sure gets much richer visually in b&w. Makes one onder if at some point in the pre-prouction of Raiders Lucas and Spielberg wanted to make th movie inblack and wite butwere vetoed by Paramount, but as aninside joke, they told the cnematographer to light the movie as if he was making a b&w movie. Anyway, fantastic stuff, thanks for sharing with us. Good job, mate.

It took about 20 years for fanboys to stop hating TOD

    by bre32

And to a lesser extent, LC. I seriously doubt KOTCS will still be viewed as a drastic departure in tone 20 years from now. By that point, each film will be judged solely on its own- not by how much it feels like a product of the 1980s.

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 1:19 p.m. CST

    Crystal Skull

    by A.J. Albright

Was pretty much exactly what I expected from a 1950s Indiana Jones. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. The only thing I didn't like was all the CG. I would have preferred a more old school approach to making the movie. Also no Sean Connery is always a plus. He was the worst character in all the Indiana Jones movies. I cannot stand watching Sean Connery play Sean Connery is every single movie he is in. I want acting. He is like Michael Douglas. You never actually get a character in a Michael Douglas movie. You get Michael Douglas. How do either of these buffoons get work?

    Crystal Skull

    by peter skellen

I like the first part of the film, some great stunts (Area 51, the bike chase). And the wedding at the end is nice when his hat blows in and the music stirs up. All feels like a blood relative to the rest of the series. The problem is that the film grinds to a halt and becomes surprisingly dull when the jungle section arrives. Yes, too much CGI and Ray Winstone and John Hurt are completely wasted with vague characters (can't even remember what their names were). I don't think the film is *that* bad but it was obviously made by people who didn't have their hearts in it. Ford was great though.

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 1:39 p.m. CST

Temple of Doom wasn't really a prequel

    by Mugato5150

Yeah it was set a year before Raiders but you wouldn't know it if the caption "Shanghai, 1935" didn't come up. You could make the case that Indy was a much bigger mercenary prick in ToD than he was in Raiders I suppose. I just think they didn't want to run into the hijinks of late 1937 China (they had a little spat with Japan).

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 1:43 p.m. CST

And the best adventure movie since Raiders was Tintin

The Crystal Skull bashing is fucking tired. Grow up.

    by Quake II

I love how EVERY article about this box set includes Crystal Skull bashing. Sorry it let you down but a lot of people who have never heard of this site actually loved it. It made 300+ million in the US and sold well on Blu-ray. My 10 year old son prefers it to Crusade and Temple Of Doom. Can we move on? And yeah, I'll buy the set and enjoy all the movies. Let's face it, they are enjoyable but NONE OF THEM even come close to the brilliant and perfect Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 2 p.m. CST

    No offense, but...

    by StatelyWayneManor

..."My ten year old likes it" probably won't change many opinions here.

  • Movies don't reach 300 million unless people are going multiple times, so with the exception of the uber geek-elite, Crystal Skull was very well-received in the US. And I actually think it will age better than Crusade or TOD. The special effects in Crusade are horrible. The blue screen blimps, model planes, lazy matte paintings, rubber figures on model mine carts and stuffed circus animal heads did not age well at all. Raiders has a couple effects that are "ugh" but TOD and Crusade went overboard with the special effects.

  • See how that works?

  • Aug. 7, 2012, 2:06 p.m. CST

I still don't get the hate for part 4.

    by knowthyself

It's not really bad. It's a fine movie.

Nothing new here that wouldn't make me want to buy vs. rent. Come one Spielberg! I've love to hear a commentary track of your own... let Lucas have his own. A special effects commentary track... or even a commentary track by archaeologists who just happen to love the movies! And have a trivia "Did you know" track that goes with each movie. That would be worth the buy.

But I think his point was that a movie doesn't make that kind of bank without repeat business and good word of mouth. So it doesn't necessarily mean it was a good movie but some people somewhere liked it. Same with the SW prequels.

packaged in an Ark of the Covenant. It's not like I'm not buying this anyways...but it wuld be too cool. Also..Crystal Skull had some moments I'd like to forget about, but overall I really enjoy the movie and watch it on occasion. As someone else also mentioned, in a world of shaky cam it was great to see some great paced and filmed action scenes. Even if the scenes were a little silly...they were still great to look at. I eagerly await this set. :)

    If Raiders never came out...

    by BilboRing

Would everyone have loved Temple of Doom or Last Crusade? Nope. They were average movies at best. Raiders was just so fucking great that you didn't care how bad the other movies were. You just wanted to see Indy kicking ass with that music playing. But if the first movie was Temple of Doom, we'd all give two shits about it by now.

    Here's a notion;

    by MyDeformedElbow

If you love or hate KOTCS, you're right! You can argue technique but you can't argue opinion. I long for the days when I wasn't an idiot for having a differing opinion from someone else.

  • Kidding of course. He's awesome, but in seriousness, he did look tired in Crystal Skull. I'm sure some of you know about that swordfight scene in The Last Crusade and how he was sick as a dog that day...(For those who don't know, these Arab swordsmen were going to attack Indy and he was going to fight them off with his whip...instead, because Ford was so sick and just wanted to finish taping, he came up with the idea to take out a gun and shoot the lead guy after he does all his fancy sword-waving. A great scene, but Ford looked really bad, feverish and whatnot, like he should have been in bed instead of filming.) Well the look he had on his face there - that's how I thought he looked though all of Crystal Skull. He was giving it all, but it just wasn't the same. And to be honest, from the CGI to the writing, a lot of the film felt half-assed. It was good, better than a lot of the crap Hollywood puts out these days, but in my opinion just didn't have the same energy as the earlier films. Even worse, the filmmakers tried to make up for this fact, which made their efforts look like replication and drew more attention to the lack of spontaneity. Definitely picking up this box set though, provided I can get it for less than a week's pay.

Lucas getting the public ready for the Young Indy nonsense. plain and simple. Nitpick the first 3 all you want. all 3 were at least great, with Raiders of course being the best. first parts normally are. KOTCS was amusing until the novelty of seeing Ford as that character again wore off. which was pretty much 10 minutes in... The rest of it is every bit as terrible as South Park has covered.

    It's all about Jones

    by James Grinnell

You can argue the merits of the Indiana Jones films all day, and it seems some of you have. I love all three of the originals (though Raiders will always be the only true GREAT film) and yes, kotcs was disappointing but I can still watch it occasionally, not because it's a great film but it's more of one of cinemas great characters appearing in a film again. Kotcs doesn't do to Indiana Jones what the prequels did to Star Wars because Indy was still the same guy, a little older sure, but still the laconic, beaten up hero I'd always loved and getting to see Indy in any form again makes me smile.

  • ...ever heard of a spell checker? Apart from that, great piece as ever. Keen as mustard for this set, and looking forward to the Robert Watts panel at Celebration 6 where he'll discuss the film with Ben Burtt.

    by Turd_Is_Floating_Underneath_The_Gravy

One was a lazy family-friendly cash-grab with a smug, self-satisfied, late middle-aged director behind the camera and a decrepit fading star, in dire need of a hit, in front of it; the other was a thrilling, balls-to-the-walls, violent, non-PC serial adventure with some of the best directed action scenes in history, helmed by a hungry young genius and featuring an iconic, charismatic movie star at the top of his game. You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself for thinking otherwise.

A lot of people, me included, thought KotCS was pretty good. Not perfect, but certainly not a "debacle". Do your job and stick to reporting for articles like this like a good monkey and relegate your opinions to your reviews so I can skip them.

  • It's no where near as bad as of a franchise installment as say Phantom menace, superman 4, Batman and robin, Jaws 4, friday the 13th part 5, Star Trek Insurrection, battle for the planet of the apes, I could go on, but the point im making is that KotCS is not a terrible movie, it's just a weak entry in a series but it;s not unwatchable and is certainly better then tons of movies out there

    Raiders Deleted Scenes:

    by DaveJ

Indy uses whip to cut through spiderweb covering pit in temple at beginning (looks like a solid floor) before using vine to swing across. Maron kisses Indy before he leaves the bar. Seen in making of doc. Fight with swordsman in marketplace. Parts seen in making of doc. More explicit warning on headpiece that looking into the ark will cause death. Sallah searches for a rope to get Indy out of map room. German Soldier ordered to shoot Sallah after Nazis seal Indy in well of souls. He let's Sallah go. Indy knocks out arab guard after he and Marion emerge from well of souls (you can see the guard lying in the background in the final cut). Germans debate blowing up the Katana before heading to island. Indy uses whip to tie himself to periscope of sub after it submerges. Rides to island. Numerous effects shots and additional dialogue cut from ark opening scene. This is what I wanted to see the most.

The legacy of that character and those movies. If Spielberg and Lucas had set out, first and foremost, to deliver a solid action adventure flick, then made sure it fit well enough into the Indy universe (fyi aliens do NOT belong there). Instead the attitude from the get-go is 'it's Indy, so people will forgive us anything...CGI gophers and monkeys included!' The fact that nobody could create a half-decent Indiana Jones screenplay.......I pity some of these guys. I bring Damon Lindelof into this...seriously, you have this huge Alien sandbox to play in and can't produce anything good?? FFS. Not buying this shitty set btw. And KOTCS is being bashed because the expectations were way too high for everyone. It was never going to be as great as RAIDERS. My favs in order: RAIDERS LC TOD KOTCS

The scene where Sallah is almost executed...

    by Darth Scourge

That deleted scene from Raiders where a young German soldier is ordered to execute Sallah should have been included. Surely it wouldn't have been too hard to locate that footage, dust it off, and include it as a bonus. Likewise, the brief deleted footage showing Indy lashing himself to the submarine periscope with his whip should have been included. There was also a fair bit of footage deleted from Temple of Doom which would have been cool to see. Well, at least the original Making of Raiders doc from 1981 wil be on there.... BUT... no "Great Movie Stunts" documentary???? That vintage Raiders doc is awesome... I'm surprised they aren't including that. And there was also a vintage making of doc for Temple of Doom... which looks like it won't be on there. Too bad... they could have included a LOT more stuff in this set.

    Crystal Skull Hatred

    by Michael Nascimben

People seem to forget that Indiana Jones was made as an homage to those old time serials of the thirties and forties and was done with tongue firmly in cheek. I remember when Raiders came out Speilberg & Lucas saying that at no time would Indy's hat fall off his head cause it never happened to their heroes.

  • . For those unaware, and on this site im guessing thats few, Raiders The Adaptation is a shot-for-shot remake of raiders done over several years by a bunch of kids in the 80s. Its the single greatest homage to one of the greatest movies of all times AND captures it thru the eye's of kids. Its insane that they havent released it for a wider audience yet and this would have been the perfect opportunity. woulda been win-win for all involved. Peace .n. Crystal Skull is my favourite after Raiders.

    by theyreflockingthisway

I particulalrly loved it because it's pure adventuring and exploration. It was finally an Indy film where they explore mysterious ancient tombs and ruins like the opening of Raiders. After that classic opening scene, we didn't see much of it in the series until the end of Crusade. I don't mind that others don't like the movie. It's up to you guys what you enjoy and don't enjoy, but I found Crystal Skull to be a lot of fun. Incidently I never actually saw the Indy films as a kid and saw them for the first time in my late teens so maybe I don't have the nostalgia attached to the originals so that Crystal Skulll seems so different. To me they're all great, fun, silly adventures and even Temple of Doom, which I like the least, is still a film I love to revisit again and again.

    The Indy Saga

    by kimsshawn

I saw all 4 at the movies. RAIDERS is in a class by itself and keeps getting better. TEMPLE was great when I saw it in '84 (I was 15) but gets a little more annoying everytime I see it. I hated LAST CRUSADE - except the opening - the first time I saw it and haven't watched it since it came out on VHS. Seen bits on FX or whatever it plays on. Just the scene where Connery makes the birds crash the plane is stupid enough to never see that flick again. For me, anyway. CRYSTAL SKULL had a bad premise but I liked it better than CRUSADE, which ain't sayin' much. I'm going to wait until they come out individually and hope the RAIDERS disc has a bunch of decent extras. There's a little something good in all the sequels but the drop off in quality is amazing since it comes from all the same people. At least STAR WARS had EMPIRE but these are ridiculous.

KOTCS is one of the worst and laziest movies ever made

    by jones1899

Anyone putting KOTCS in the same league as the OT is completely clueless about what makes an adventure film work. These are obviously kids who think the Mummy movies are just fun old fashioned adventures. KOTCS had no stakes, no sense of danger, no balls, no real life exotic locales, too many characters. Here's another way to say it: When you have 5 good guys, 4 of which are over 50, all survive a situation, that situation is suddenly and completely sucked dry of any sense of peril. And when that situation is staged with bad CG and green screen work? It becomes even worse than that. The other films maintained that sense of peril, which made the goofy bits a welcome breath. How do people not understand this? And the LAZINESS of KOTCS! Take the scene in the truck when Indy, Marion, and Mutt are tied up. Mutt tosses Indy his knife, we here a rip sound and Mutt says "oh shit". Can anyone tell me why? Do we ever see Indy has ripped his pants? What the hell was this? A bad edit? How did this make it into the movie? Aren't these professionals? Red Letter Media did a much better job than I ever could in showing what went wrong with this movie, but they were wrong on one point. A good Indy movie is STILL possible despite Ford's age. All they have to do is OWN it. Let him be that beat up and bruised, grizzled adventurer. He's a human character (for being an adventure hero at least) and we like to see him hurt and tired. It's when they try to hide the fact that he's older that things get embarrassing. Try one more time Spielberg. Please. And have some balls to take chances! Shoot on location. Don't copy the OT (count the references to the other movies and it starts to literally out number any original ideas). You're a legend, take a fucking chance.

    by ElCabri2

That movie is remarkably true to the Indiana Jones filming style, storytelling and characters given how big the gap is from the filming of Crusade. It really shows a sincere effort to please the audience of the original trilogy. In an age of reboots and re-invention of franchises -- I mean just compare with the "other" big Lucas franchise. I consider it at least clearly superior to Temple.

    by chromedome

But both were let downs. No interest in seeing them again, ever. Skull did have some good moments, some "closure" sorts of things, and stuff like that. Temple of Doom felt almost like a counterfeit Indiana Jones movie. On the other hand, when I happen to channel surf into Raiders or Last Crusade, I am hooked again every time. Just like tv series that go on a few too many seasons, movies can on into too many sequels. I suspect the creators know they are pushing it, since they must have the same difficulty forcing those stories into existence as we have watching them. The money makes em all do it. And we go watch, hoping maybe this time it will be different.

    Wartime Raiders?

    by Grand Moff Toht

Always wondered why it wasn't set during wartime. Certain things would make more sense. For example, island the destination of that U Boat, apparently Rhodes in the eastern Mediterranean, wouldn't have been available to the Germans as a base before 1940, because Rhodes was Italian-owned and Italy wasn't in WWII until 1940 when Mussolini tried to ride the Germans' coat tails to victory. (Woops!) Also, the presence of an armed German expedition inside British-occupied Egypt makes more sense if it were part of Rommel's Afrika Korps, which in 1942 had pushed deep inside Egypt until he was stopped about 60 miles from Alexandria. But per-war? And so close to Cairo? Never. Don't jump on me, Raiders is still one of my favorite movies in addition to being near perfect, but I was just wondering aloud is all. Have been watching it since I was 7 yrs old. And I realize changing the time of the story would change a lot more, script wise. Probably not for the better, either. On the other hand, I love that Spielberg borrowed the U boat from Das Boot. Just one of many touches that give the film an authentic look. Why couldn't the Beards score a real Messerschmidt for Last Crusade instead of whatever they did for the aerial sequence??? You can go about your business. Move along.

The support for KOTCS is astonishing.

    by Mosquito March

Ford was in great form except for the "grumpy old professor" jokes; LeBeouf was okay but poorly written; and some of the action stuff from the first half was decent. Everything else was fucking HORRIBLE. All the unnecessary characters, weak villains, crazy Marion, CGI backdrops, cartoon animals, backlot/soundstage footage, and complete lack of urgency in the last hour, where all of the action was led by just-introduced John Hurt, were inexcusable. And then there are the fucking ALIENS. And for all the people saying that Willie, Shorty and Henry (?!?!?) were awful sidekicks, nobody in these movies could ever even approach my disdain for Ray Winstone's Mac character. How that useless, loud, obnoxious, sweaty fat fucker ever made it past the first draft is one of the greatest mysteries of the franchise. For all the noise, at least Willie was hot.

    Senor Spielbergo is correct

    by Plathismo

Raiders is the masterpiece here. Each subsequent film, IMO, has been about half as good as the one before it. Temple at least has some decent brutality to liven things up, but has significant pacing problems. Last Crusade is insanely overrated: "The tapestries! You've gone and given me a sniffle!" I know you're trying to block your memory of stuff like that, but it's in there, and it's as corny as anything in Crystal Skull. And obviously the less said about Crystal Skull, the better. Spielberg just doesn't have his heart in these summer popcorn films anymore, and it shows.
