Here's Our First Official Look At Daniel Day-Lewis As Lincoln!
Nordling here.
I can't wait for the fall. Fall is when all the goods really come. And not many are more anticipated as Steven Spielberg's LINCOLN, covering the last few months of his life before his assassination. Daniel Day-Lewis is already a tremendous actor, and I can wait to see what he brings to the role. Entertainment Weekly has our first look at DDL in the role, and it looks impressive.
Says Spielberg, "Lincoln had a very, very complicated – and at the same time, extremely clear — inner life. He thought things out. He talked things out. He argued both sides of every issue. And he was very careful in making any decision. As a matter of fact, his opponents and his enemies criticized him often for being impossibly slow to a decision.”
Here's the picture of Lincoln, looking thoughtful, and DDL looks like he's not just acting the part, but living it. LINCOLN opens November, 2012. Can't wait. Click to embiggen:

It would be funny if Lincoln plays soccer in this movie while laying on the ground using only one foot
by ajit maholtra
The left one.
-
He by far had the roughest Presidency--and I'm not even counting the bullet in the head. One of two Presidents who actually saved the country. FDR was the other one. I hope Spielberg points out that Lincoln would have done anything to avoid war--including keeping slavery--and that's what makes him great. The preservation of the union was more important to him than his own personal feelings about slavery.

We had a GATSBY trailer two months ago and that doesn't even open until next year.

No one has ever won 3 Best Actor Oscars. Could be the first!

lol +1
-
I'd buy that for a dollar.

holy fuck that's impressive. Makes you almost wonder why Neeson was even considered.
-
I dunno if I'll see this, but if I do it will be just to watch DDL go full milkshake as Abe.

He stood right next to me for about 30 seconds one day on set when I worked as an extra.
by BlaGyver
I don't think I let my breath out that entire time. It was awesome. I won't say anything about the movie because I don't know how strict my NDA is at this point (though honestly I don't know much that falls into that territory). All I'll say is that this movie is going to be great and working on it was easily the coolest thing I've ever done in my life.

He looks just like him!!

Day-Lewis is notorious for staying in-character when not shooting. Did he do that this time?
by MrEkoLetMeLive
Did the crew have to call him "Mr. President?" Did Spielberg call him "Abe?"

That's Abraham Lincoln.

Amazing likeness. The rest of this week can go to shit for all I care now that I've seen this.

I'm honestly looking just as forward to seeing Tommy Lee Jones in this.
by Brank Hud
Although I am sure he will look just like he always does, so I don't need a picture. This movie will be amazing, I think.

Which movie will come out on top at the Oscars? It's a two horse race if you ask me. I'd like to think Django could get a nod but doubt that topic would render an Oscar reward. Yes, Where's the trailer Spielberg?
-
Toby Jones as James Buchanan?

Some of us are idiots and don't know history.

here's another sterling example of why d-day beats oldman by a hair in the list of the best modern actors in hollywood. maybe my wildest fantasy of them acting opposite of one another will come true...and maybe monkeys might fly out of my butt. i can't wait to see this, regardless.

With Toby Jones and Anthony Hopkins playing Hitchcock in The Girl and (now titled) Hitchcock, and this..
by openthepodbaydoorshal
it'll be an interesting time to see how these wonderful actors handle these roles. Does Toby Jones suffer from second place syndrome, much as the dueling Capote projects a few years back?

by Mickster_Island

but the best perfomance day lewis has ever given and will ever give is bill the butcher poole in gangs of new york. and he remains the only actor to give Leonardo dicaprio an acting lesson in that movie. especially the scene where day lewis is in the rocking chair with the blood spattered stars and stripes draped round his shoulders. dont really know why Marty S had to kill him off. D day was the best thing about the movie no question. The oscars have become boring and predictable. but I do think the berg will do well with abraham lincoln. I am not a huge fan of P. T. anderson. I found there will be blood a numbing film to sit through. even though I was blown away no country for old men. I am no hurry to see that film again. either.
-
or should they just give Day-Lewis the Best Actor Oscar right now?

DDL's best performance, for my money, is Age of Innocence
by Mickster_Island
Scorsese's adaptation of Wharton's mid-1800s novel set in New York. It's a gorgeous looking movie - but DDL - whew! Man he's good. The whole thing is that he's supposed to have manners so he never really just comes right out and says what's going on inside. His performance will tie you in knots and he never says a word about his pain. Stunning. It's a Top 20.
-
Whoooops, my mistake! I was sure there were for Best Actor, all three of them.
-
A prosthetic Lincoln mole? DDL is so committed to the part, he'd have one grafted onto his face.
-
Knowing what I know of him as an actor, I expect he will be as accurate as possible.

That's Robert Stack! They must have mistakenly released a photo of Stack playing Lincoln in the TV series "Most Wanted". Wait, sorry, Stack played Captain Lincoln Evers in that show, not the president. Also he died in 2003. But hey, thanks for Airplane! Mr Stack. Also the scene in 1941 where he's in the theater watching Dumbo.
-
Went into gene therapy for 8 months to contract Marfan Syndrome, he did.

Google 'Abraham Lincoln worst President'. As Morpheus would say, 'Expand your mind'.

...which according to historic references is what Lincoln had. Most actors when portraying Lincoln use a deep voice. It will be interesting to see what DDL comes up with.

Hmm Toby Jones as Hitchcock. I sat next to him a few weeks ago for a 6 hour play (Gatz, in London). I looked up to see him shuffling down my row towards me, wearing a long cream-coloured mac. I recognised that face instantly and wondered if he'd be seated next to me- he was.

'My Left Foot' is THE GREATEST performance I've ever seen from an actor.
by 5secondfuse
Absolutely astonishing and the method he went through to play Christy Brown. There are many great actors out there but DDL is THE FUCKING MAN. He doesn't make many movies but EVERYONE knows when a DDL performance alone makes a movie anticipated. He's amazing in Gangs of New York totally blowing everyone else right off the screen with so much ease it's frightening. In There Will Be Blood he's astonishing. This shot alone on the cover of a magazine once again shows that yet another DDL performance sets him apart from the rest.

Lincoln being a Kentuckian who was educated in Illinois and based on some accounts most have speculated that his voice was
by Dogmatic
a bit high and tinny with excellent diction and the ever so slightest of a Kentucky drawl. I am almost certain DDL will want to go for just that. Spielberg has shown he loves historical accuracy but not if it costs on entertainment...so I can see he and DDL may have had a bit of a disagreement on that, but there has been no indication of that coming out of the shoot. So, I am hoping DDL gets his way and gives us the most authentic Lincoln voice ever.
-
...and taking in some factual context and broader information on our 16th president beyond published agenda-skewed opinion and perspectives from un-educated, un-enlightened and gravely un-informed buffoons on the Web found by Googling "Abraham Lincoln Worst President". Yes, misinformation has been presented on him for years by over-enthusiastic educators elevating him to messianic proportions, and yeah, the civil war was based on states rights and constitutional law rather than (solely) on slavery, none of which takes a single credit off Abe's record of accomplishments while in office. Trust fact and knowledge over opinion and perspective every time, and you'll find the reward...be better than that. As Morpheus (also) said "I'm trying to free your mind. But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it."
-
...yeah, but didn't go there (search results written by southerners), both because uninformed opinions no know geographic boundaries (asshats can be found everywhere) and because prior to living here in LA, I grew up in and lived in GA (and there are some enlightened southerners)... Still, all things being equal (based on those search results), I'd agree we've got some narrow-minded rebs out there with a serious hard-on for ol Abe..

i wonder if 'SPEILBERG' will mention R0thschild agents killed Lincoln. but then again, 'speilberg' is as much as an 'internti0nalist' as they come. The R0thschilds killed Lincoln because he issued debt free currency, 'greenbacks.' they then worked tirelessly for 40 years until they established the next centralbank, the illegal dFederal Rezerve. the r0shschilds are the most disgusting evil vile family to ever walk the earth. we must free the Republik from the vicious 'tentacles' of their banker fascism. go investigate for yourself, but if you cannot find it next to impossible, that this 'family' is involved with every single american war, then keep drinking the high fructose corn syrup sweetened kool aid!

DDL is the man. I wonder how the film will approach ol' Abe. I've little doubt that it will draw out the modern-day secessionists and other anti-Abe types. We may even get a "Lincoln was gay!" reference or two...

Wish it was being done by Soderbergh instead of Spielberg
by ReportAbuse
Or any of several other directors. Spielberg's schmaltz factor has gone through the roof lately.
-
Spielberg never delt in schmaltz. You are a tool. Take "War Horse" for example. It's a human story with a horse as an equalizer. Extremely powerful anti-war tale as a result. As there are no drawn out death scenes or anything like that. Everything is very matter of fact. And it's sad that these days the audiences can't even view films objectively. The man isn't even sentimental (Munich, A.I. are some of the most uncompromising films of the last decade). And unlike Soderbergh, Spielberg remains consistent in his values.
-
It's been so long.

I hope Lewis' voice match up with the original audio recordings of Lincoln
by BoyNamedSue
Just kidding! Lincoln is reputed to have had a high-pitched voice, however. A shame Lincoln died only a few years before the invention of audio recording technology.
-
will there be a scene where he yells at martha behind a waterfall? I WILL FIND YOU add that shit into the script, spielberg
-
But as good as Lewis is Im very doubtful they will get the frontal view anywhere close to Abe's. His face is just too ingrained into popular culture.
-
I want to watch him fight George Washington!
-
And The Vampire Hunter version makes more.
-
Munich is the best spy film ever made. Balls out! An injustice it flopped.
-
Lincoln in the this time frame would have been much thinner. He was a whisper of a man during the last two years of his life.
-
...what are you going to do about it?"
-
Aug. 8, 2012, 10:54 a.m. CST
I wonder if anybody was pissed about the vampire killing movie...
by Darth Macchio
Sure they're completely unrelated but I doubt people will simply forget that there was a ridiculous concept movie about Abraham Lincoln hunting and killing vampires with a hatchet when they see this.
-
That's what I was thinking when Bardem dropped out. Not that he'd do it, but he'd be perfect for the role. Tall, lanky, badass.
-
Smithsonian has a great article speculating on what Abraham Lincoln's voice might have sounded like http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Ask-an-Expert-What-Did-Abraham-Lincolns-Voice-Sound-Like.html

Does that mean he's going to run for office?
