Summer 2013 Must Be A Greater Time For Warner Bros. To Release THE GREAT GATSBY!!
The Kidd here...
If you were looking forward to checking out Baz Luhrmann's take on THE GREAT GATSBY this holiday season, you're just going to have to wait a little longer... at least another six months. Warner Bros. has announced that it's shifting the 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel from its original December 25 release date to sometime in the summer of 2013, with an exact date not yet set.
Hmmm... it's already got 3D going for it, so clearly this must be to add some more Channing Tatum.
THE GREAT GATSBY doesn't exactly strike me as a summer movie, but Warner Bros. must be hoping the visual style of Luhrmann for the film and the cast must be enough to carry it for adult audiences looking for something without giant explosions and massive special effects during those months. Plus, the idea of competing with another DiCaprio film during the holidays - DJANGO UNCHAINED - can only hurt both pictures.
Adjust your calendars as such moving forward.

Or don't...original release would've been after doomsday anyhow.
-
We haven't forgotten Spider-Man 3, Tobey Maguire. And we never will, no matter how hard we try.
-
This can't be good news. Are they any films that have had their release delayed that came out well? I defer to more knowledgeable talkbackers...
-
Let's just delay this cinematic abortion for eternity. Fitzgerald would roll over in his grave if he saw the preview.
-
What a useless, horrible, pathetic grab at extra cash through higher ticker prices. I want to hear one studio exec, with a straight face, try and claim that this story just SCREEMS out to be told as a 3D extravaganza!

Smart move.

Yeah I'm full of hate but I can't ever recall having such a giant lack of interest in a film. Watch it get buried by Iron Man 3.

Titanic leaps to mind, and one of the Harry potter films, I think it was #6 maybe.
-
Studios probably don't want to financially cannibalize DiCaprio.
-
They probably don't want sadistic plantation racist Dicaprio playing in the same theater as matinee idol Dicaprio.

From what I've seen, my favourite adaptation is still the Great Books cliffs notes version
by tangcameo
Didn't required dance numbers. Or Leo D-Cap. Or Robert Redford. Or a diabetically cloying Mia Farrow. Wish that show had come out on DVD.

They fear that having the two biggest movies they currently own (through new line) will hurt both titles, they can't move Hobbit as it would affect the subsequent movie release dates, so they've pushed back Gatsby to when there's less competition.

"You were looking forward to checking out Baz luhrman's.." the only thing I'd look forward to re baz lurhman would be his burning at the stake surrounded by every fucking print of every one o his shitassed collages of shit.

Great Gatsby Part 1: Jeeves bring me another mint julup. Great Gatsby Part 2: Kicking the Poor Great Gatsby Part 3: Why the @#$@ Did We Try and Adapt the Perfect Book into a shi##y modern day movie?!?!

how releasing it never and releasing DJANGO UNCHAINED right fucking now?
-
Christmas is crowded, and having competing DiCaprios wouldn't fare too well if you ask me. I knew TWC wouldn't budge DJANGO.
-
I got the Cliff Notes instead, and i dont remember shit.

The Great Gatsby is a rather brief novel, telling a simple tale simply.
by SnootyBoots
Judging only by the trailer, the movie looks over produce, over the top, over blown. Maybe Warners doesn't like what they've seen and are getting it out of awards season and dumping it into the summer hoping it might make some scratch as counter programming.
-
I wasn't sure how much I liked this Kidd character, but that one got me good. Also, what the hell does the Great Gatsby need to be in 3D for??
-
and it damn sure wasn't going to be THE HOBBIT. Looking forward to seeing how Baz has destroyed the source material.
-
Better off leaving it in the can.
-
The trailer had the worst CGI I have seen since The Phantom Menace. I am not interested in this film, but the push was probably not for the 3-D, but the horrible CGI

I forget. Was it Chevy or Ford who came out with the gatsby?
by David Duchovny
Think my bf's grandfather owned one.

Anyone know when this will be?
-
...but with the Hobbit and a shitload of other big movies coming, I would move it to Valentine's week and let it make a shitload in the late winter/early spring when nothing else is out.

Because it was going to get curbstomped in a strong summer? I wish they'd released GI Joe on time, so Avengers, Spider-Man, and Dark Knight could have crushed its head like a nut, Von Sydow style.

J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" was pushed back from fall of 2008 to the summer of 2010 with seemingly no ill-effects. I've heard nothing, yet, about production problems or studio displeasure with "Gatsby" -- though, that stuff usually bubbles to the surface shortly after an announcement like this, if that is the true reason for the push-back. Though I do not see this as a realistic gamble for a competitive summer slot, even if it's a great movies. It's possible this is a smart marketing move seeing as DiCaprio is the lead in both films. We'll see ...

Oops ... meant "summer of 2009" with "Star Trek"...

MOULIN ROUGE was a summer release (June 1), and it got a Best Picture nomination
by ShiftyEyedDog
so the idea that it "doesnt strike you as a summer movie" means nothing. Not every summer movie has to have 'splosions or superheroes.

Competing DiCaprios on Christmas Day has kind of happened before
by YouSunkMyBlankenship
'Gangs of New York' came out 12/20/02 and 'Catch me if you Can' five days after that. If I remember correctly, both did well.

Can something this boring even compete with the mindless schlock of the summer?
by Christian Sylvain
The wallets say nay.

They haven't actually finished shooting this in Sydney which probably explains the reason it's getting pushed back .... they were supposed to finish last year, but it got extended and extended and extended ... and now they keep getting crew back to do more pickups, and then MORE pickups ....
-
It's hard to argue with some of those examples!

And 3D? So stupid. What's next? HAMLET IN 3D!

a Baz Luhrmann film in 3D will look AMAZING. You people are idiots.
by ShiftyEyedDog
all you want is action and horror in 3D. ANY film can use depth. and Luhrmann's unique visual style will be a spectacular fit for 3D.
