Cannon Fodder: Over The Top and Masters of The Universe Revisited
What’s Up Contenders? Terry Malloy here, reporting live from the Waterfront:
Cannon Fodder is an ongoing column which will re/visit the entire canon (ahem) of feature films produced by Cannon Films. Launching some of the biggest action careers in film history, such as Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Cannon Films were the ultimate purveyors of mid-budget cheese throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s. Cannon Fodder will explore the entire filmography of this storied production company (in no particular order) and will do its best to prepare AICN readers for the upcoming release of Mark Hartley’s definitive Cannon Films Documentary; Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films.
And although Cannon Films was not run start to close by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yorum Globus for the entirety of Cannon Films’ existence, they are the power players that gambled big and eventually lost big with this prolific production house. Each edition of Cannon Fodder will briefly explore what level of involvement the loveable cousins had in each film. Because there are several dozen titles in the Cannon Canon, each installment of this column will cover multiple titles.
I revisited Over The Top for the first time since the glory days of VHS this past week. To my shock and surprise, Over The Top really is not an action movie. It is, however, a steroidal drama. What you have here is Sylvester Stallone playing a character with the greatest tough guy name ever conceived in all of filmdom: Lincoln Hawk. Hawk is a big rig driver who we meet just as he is attempting to rekindle a relationship with his young son, Michael (David Mendenhall). I found the first act to be pretty refreshing in the pace of its exposition. With notable forward momentum, we learn that Hawk and his son are entirely estranged. And that Michael’s mother is sick and hoping that father and son can rekindle some kind of relationship. We also learn that Robert Loggia is a mean-hearted old sumumabitch. And by that I mean that Michael’s grandfather wants to raise him and wants Lincoln Hawk nowhere near their privileged family.

On the road to meet up with ex-wife/mom, Hawk and Son begin the slow process of reacquaintence, and we learn that Hawk is a burgeoning competitive arm wrestling contender. All of this develops fairly naturally for a film that has only one level: 11. As the inevitable arm wrestling tournament approaches, ‘80s power ballads will accentuate the drama. Will Hawk be able to prove himself to his precocious young son? Will Michael decide to stick with his dad or be raised by a wealthy old codger? Will the world ever meet either of these guys half way? Hell no! You’ve got to go out there and take what you can in this world. One arm wrestling match at a time.
Over The Top adheres strictly to the Stallone formula, and while it never quite reaches the greatness of a Rocky or a Rambo, and never warranted a sequel, Over The Top is kind of a blast.
Things You Will Only Ever See In THIS Movie
- A greased up palooka with a weight lifting setup jerry rigged into his hauler.
- A montage sequence that shows you a real dude’s elbow being dislocated on screen!
- Professional Wrestling’s Terry Funk drinking motor oil to psych out his opponents.
How Many Tablespoons of Golan/Globus Are Added?
The cousins are pretty heavily involved this time out! Menahem Golan is credited as the Director of Over The Top. And both Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan are credited as Producers on the film.
How Can You See Over The Top?
I recommend allowing the power ballads (many of which were written or performed by geek favorite Giorgio Moroder) to wash over you and to hit the road with Hawk and Son. You’ll never for one moment question how it will all turn out. But who doesn’t want to see Stallone beat the odds in whatever blue collar scenario he finds himself in?
I was able to watch the film on Netflix Watch Instant, and as of this writing, it remains available in that format and can also be rented on disc at Netflix. It also appears to be purchasable in both DVD and Blu-ray formats on Amazon.com.
Masters Of The Universe (1987)
I’m engaging in a bit of a personal Dolph Lundgren retrospective of late, brought on by the amazing new release of Red Scorpion on Blu-ray. I had never seen that particular title before, despite being a pretty big Lundgren-ite. And so it came to pass that I decided I absolutely HAD to revisit some of Dolph’s greatest classics. In case you were wondering, yes, I’d consider Masters of the Universe to be a Dolph classic.
Again, this was a film of my youth which I had not experienced since that bygone era where regular trips to the video store were commonplace. I was a massive fan of He-Man as a boy, and was just young enough to play with all the toys, watch all the cartoons, and be TOTALLY confused by the big screen adaptation of Masters Of The Universe.

Where is Orko? Where is Battle Cat? Who are all of these additional characters I don’t recognize and why is this movie set on Earth?! As a boy, I really wasn’t the smartest cookie. I mostly swallowed what was fed to me by the entertainment complex. But my burgeoning film critic brain was really confused by Masters Of The Universe.
Watching it this past week, I found myself enjoying the film a lot more than I am supposed to. Masters of the Universe is a film that falls victim to the Golan/Globus school of filmmaking. Cannon Films infamously went after some of the biggest and best rights they could, such as Superman, Spiderman, and He-Man. Once they secured these rights, however, they saddled their productions with minimal budgets and often interfered with the productions heavily. First time director Gary Goddard offers a very genuine, anecdote-filled commentary on the DVD copy of the film that I just watched. He seems to look back fondly on the experience, but it is clear that he pulled off some sort of miracle simply by getting a watchable film completed. Cannon even shut down the production 3 days before principle photography completed and Goddard had to fight for an extra day just to shoot the climactic battle between He-Man and Skeletor!
But I’m getting ahead of myself. For you folks who were not children of the 1980s, what the hell is Masters of the Universe? Despite the scorn aimed at Battleship this Summer, Masters of the Universe was actually a property that first existed as a toy line featuring barbarian-style characters drawing from sword and sorcery visual motifs. The toys then became a popular cartoon series that added a more convoluted (and homoerotic) layer to the ongoing adventures of He-Man and his battle against the minions of Skeletor.
The film begins in Eternia, with Skeletor having captured Castle Greyskull. I love that the film begins with Frank Langella’s Skeletor in control, and He-Man (Dolph Lundgren) and his friends on the ropes. Narration tells us that Castle Greyskull is a sort of Stephen King’s Dark Tower kind of deal. A castle that holds the power of the universe. This power is neither good nor bad, but it is ultimate. The galaxies remain in balance with He-Man and his Sorceress in control of the power. But all existence comes under threat when Skeletor “has the power.”
Sadly, the film goes off the rails quickly when (due to budgetary restrictions and studio cowardice) our heroes must escape Eternia and plunge through a dimensional portal to modern-day earth. Although non-period, Main Street USA is easier to shoot on a budget, it really isn’t the best battle ground for scantily clad warriors and otherworldly creatures.
Masters of the Universe and Thor actually have a lot in common in this sense. Both films would have been better if they had been set entirely (or mostly) in their own magical realms instead of shoehorning a visit to Earth into their plotlines.
But in spite of this, Masters of the Universe manages to include a kitchen sink’s worth of sci-fi and fantasy tropes into its run time. I’ve always loved that the world of He-Man fully incorporates both swords and tech. Many a battle features He-Man wielding both sword and laser gun. Add hover boards, practical creature designs ripped straight from the Star Wars universe, and a super hot evil Sorceress (Meg Foster) to the mix, and Masters of the Universe offers an enormous amount of entertainment with its limited budget.
Is Masters of the Universe ultimately a good film? I’m going to have to say no. But is it significantly better than history has proclaimed it? Yeah, it kind of is.
Things You Will Only Ever See In THIS Movie
- Courtney Cox and Dolph Lundgren on the same screen at the same time.
- Frank Langella with a horribly altered face. Oh, wait, The Box.
- Dolph Lundgren holding a sword aloft and shouting “I have the power!” (Which kind of gave me goose bumps of nostalgia even though it is pretty terribly executed.)
- Billy Barty in heavy makeup swiping a bucket of ribs with a grappling hook.
How Many Tablespoons of Golan/Globus Are Added?
As mentioned, it seems that Masters of the Universe suffered from pretty sweeping budget cuts, as well as significant studio interference over the content of the film and even the shooting schedule. So my guess is that the Golan/Globus cousins were highly involved in this financial fiasco. And yet, both Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan received only a Producer credit.
How Can You See Masters of the Universe?
Although this film is riddled with the pocks of gutted budget, truncated shooting schedule, and a genuinely silly property to begin with, it is quite easy to have a blast watching Masters of the Universe. Mixed in with the behind the scenes drama there is some fun filmmaking craft on display here. Some of the creature effects are really clever, if Star Wars-inspired. And there are so many sci-fi fantasy elements thrown into the mix that Masters of the Universe would make an awesome double feature with something like Krull or hell, even THOR!
I actually rented a DVD of Masters of the Universe from Austin’s own I Luv Video because I had remembered that it wasn’t available on Netflix. However, after double checking you can rent the DVD of Masters of the Universe directly from Netflix.
And who would have believed it, but Masters of the Universe is getting a 25th Anniversary Blu-ray that is available for pre-order on Amazon and is set to release on Oct. 2nd, 2012.
And I’m Out.

Love the concept, though rather than give a synopsis on films most of us have already seen, and rewatched more than once, why not delve a little more into untold stories of the making of the films(trainwrecks)?

Masters of the Universe was one of the most epic things that happened to me as a kid. Seeing He-Man and Co. was just awesome.

-
If you keep Thor native, then he loses his status as a superhero, and that's always going to be Marvels priority.
-
the movie would have been remembered all the more fondly.
-
I revisited MOTU about 4 months back and found myself really enjoying it, as a kid is was disappointing, but now its one of those that cheesey its good movies. Always loved Over The Top, great movie and was cool to see Sly do something a little different. Is it me or was the recent Real Steal a remake/re-imagining of Over The Top? I think thats why I liked that movie too.
-
Marvel's Thor has always had his roots on Earth. The entire comic is about his development as a protector of this realm and forging his own path despite the wishes of his father. It's the juxtaposition of the fantastic and the mundane that makes Thor great. They say the MotU movie is a loose loose adaptation of Jack Kirby's Fourth World series of comic books (though less loose than it is an adaptation of MotU) which explains the time spent on Earth and the greatness of Skeletor as Darkseid.

Langella said on Letterman that he took the role because when his son found out he had been offered the role of Skeletor there was no way he could say no.

I love both these movies, I know they're supposed to be crap but I love '80s power ballads over training montages and I love Frank Langella's Skeletor almost as much as Khaaaaan. As a child I never saw Masters of the Universe as low budget, and to be honest I think it still holds up well today. I do remember being quite confused/disappointed that MOTU was missing so many of the elements of the cartoons, but these days I just sort of take it as it is and enjoy the awesomeness of Skeletor.
-
I too was a huge He-Man fanatic. I collected all the toys. He-Man movie was amazing as a kid even though it was different. I also loved Willow ans Superman IV as it came out roughly the same time. However watching the movies now I can see the low budget effects that were low budget even for its day. After the movie, I slowed down buying the He-Man toys since I got older. The funny thing is I still have my He-Man collection, which is 97 percent complete. No way am I selling it.
-
Which is a complete John Williams rip-off, but as John Williams rip-offs go, its top notch....Dolph Lundgren is pretty horrible in this movie though. When he speaks he sounds like a mentally challenged person who's first language isn't English. Langella is awesome, though. I've never seen a greater disparity in acting talent between the hero and villain in a movie.
-
... Conan. Hasbro made a line of toys for the Conan film, which, when it came out as a gloriously violent R-rated masterpiece, found they couldn't flog to kids. So they had the masterstroke of creating a cartoon aimed squarely at selling toys. And an entire Genre and numerous awful times at the movies (I'm looking at you "Clanking Transformer Wrecking Ball balls" Bay) were had. But MotU was awesome. It really was.
-
I seemed to see every other goofy 80's sci-fi flick and Stallone vehicle. These were "away at college" movies that I never got around to, but this column has peaked my interest in them.
-
It's been a long time since I've seen Over the Top, maybe too long.
-
The original cartoon is enough.

In the official "Masters of the Universe" comic book adaptation, an alternate ending is used that was written for the movie but never filmed. In the comic, after the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor, Man-At-Arms comes from the depths of Castle Grayskull carrying a NASA and US flag. The NASA flag has "Starfinder 5. July 10, 2221" written on it, revealing that the first humans on Eternia were actually from a future American space mission. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093507/trivia check out last panel here: http://www.motumovie.com/2010/06/marvel-star-comics-masters-of-universe.html

It's almost unnatural for AICN. I still disagree about Thor. As others have mentioned, it's the fish out of water, god among men aspect that make him a superhero. Remember that Kirby splash page with Thor drinking a milkshake - that's where it's at.
-
When it comes to Super Villain speeches the one he delivers before he turns is truely awesomely EPIC. I actually think it's THE GREATEST Super Villain speech of all time it's that good. The overall movie may be remembered badly but Langella as Skeletor is sublime. He's even said it's his favourite role ever and you can see why. Every scene he's in and every line he speaks is fucking awesome. Any fancy pants actor no matter how high there regarded in Hollywood or how hot they are seen nowadays would die to have a role like that. Langella is a FUCKING BEAST.

i grow really tired of the "homoerotic" potshots that MOTU gets...
by darthadv
people are looking back at it with different eyes... kind of hate the cynical, 20-20 "hindsight" it usually gets... Filmation had its own budget it had to keep to (if you watch some of their documentaries on the original sets, you'll find that they cut corners by re-using shots over and over wherever they could throughout the series), and i'm sure certain outfits were easier to draw a certain way... the budget on the masters movie was extremely small which necessitated most of it taking place on Earth... plus, a number of the characters mentioned above were Filmation properties, and not original Hasbro toys (Orko being the best example; Gwildor was an attempt to have a similar character for comic relief) got to see how the GI Joe 2 director is going to handle the new MOTU movie... not 100% excited as we have yet to see GI2, but was kind of hoping for this franchise to go to Peter Jackson! done right, it could be THAT huge! i know at one point they were talking about the guy from 300 handling the film, but that's long gone... btw, it's Grayskull with an "A!"
-
In addition to being a stand-alone film, it had to introduce Thor and Loki to the greater Marvel movie universe. Now that they've done that, they can set Thor 2 in a mostly fantastic world (as it appears they're planning on doing).
-
Terry Funk was a bodyguard that got beat up by Sly in "Over the Top," not an arm wrestler.
-
Terry Malloy, didn't you think that was a bit odd? Goddard seems to go out of his way to not mention Dolph. Seriously, Lundgren's name is never said once. Sad.
-
Somehow the women in our church had it in their heads that anything claiming to be Master of the Universe that isn't Jesus and his heavenly hosts must somehow be in league with Satan. Ah the paranoid 1980's when white christian suburban parents were scared shitless of Dungeons and Dragons and Judas Priest. He-Man with his heavy metal haircut and occult looking regalia was awesome as fuck I don't care what my mom or the Lord thinks!
-
One of the greatest villains ever portrayed on screen- he's just so much fun to watch, anchored by that Shakespearean power angle: every line is delivered as if it's the most important thing ever said in the history of the universe, AND YOU BELIEVE IT. A few years ago I edited the film down to just the Skeletor scenes and some of the other Eternia scenes (even edited out some stuff like the statue push and such to improve the action pacing) and it makes for a great 30 minutes or so of viewing.

Well, at least Transformers The Movie was a much better film than Masters and the shit was animated at that.

LMMFAO Dude, you must have stumbled onto one of my previous posts. yeah, Filmation takes most of the Blame for those Gay references toward He Man as the cartoon came off too "sensitive" for a series aimed toward kids who collect action figures. And the animation for the most part came off a little cheap. (Despite seeing a few impressive FPS here n there.) and more insulting, was those PSAs. As if Kids needed Therapy, OMG. At least GIJoe's PSAs was about basic safety, how to pet a dog and shit. although I don't get the imfamous "pork Chop sandwiches" joke when goffing on Joe's PSAs. The best PSA goes to M.A.S.K. in which Matt Tracker says avoid strangers as they can cause you harm, even worse...."A CHILD MOLESTER"!! LOL
-
Keep up that level of clever hilariousness and I think this could easily become my favorite column up in here! :)

my Cannon t-shirt. Los Angeles, CA. 1987. I was 9. I'll never forget seeing the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE trailer (in front of REVENGE OF THE NERDS II: NERDS IN PARADISE), and how the entire audience unintentionally laughed at and made fun of it. I think that was (for me) the birth of irony. Still, a fun film. Whenever I see that Cannon logo come together, I instantly smile and think of the good ol' days.
-
Fisher was actually Clark Kent (having changed his name and retired superman after realising the world was a safer place without superman creating nuclear man villains) and Freemans pimp was actually Fox who faked his own death at the end as he was tired of all the pimp shit and went off to work for Wayne Enterprises
-
...specifically the mixture of magic and technology. When I was a kid I loved He-Man because the whole thing reminded me of Conan, not it reminds of Thor. And, it could absolutely be a great movie. You don't have to be particularly respectful to canon, IMHO, but there is plenty to draw from. Also, some have mentioned that Thor belongs on Earth, that's what makes him "super." I would agree with that and add that He-Man belongs in Eternia. So, MOTU could be the comic/fantasy film series we'll never get from Thor, because there is really no excuse for He-Man and friends to ever set foot on Earth again.
-
...damn typing skills, or lack thereof.
-
...it's just time to see Eternia realized. These kind of genre films are bigger than when the first MOTU came out.

Stallone would have given us the greatest movie ever.
-
90% of the asgardian characters and locations , including all the 9 realms, are in the Public Domain (obviously, the warriors 3, the enchantress and some others are marvel creations). by setting chunks of it on earth, they can fill it with original characters and would make it harder for anyone else to make a similar movie (not counting that sci fi monstrosity with richard grieco)
-
if you think it was a cop out to have him on Earth. The whole point of Thor in the original comics was that he had to go interact with mortals, and thus become part of the Marvel Universe. It would have been stupid to just have him hanging around Asgard in both comics and film.
-
Masters of the Univers was not a good movie..but gosh, I love it so much. I remember my mom taking 6 year old me to get Dolphs autograph. He was there promoting some work out video...or something, I don't know. Anyways...clearly I was the only one there because of Masters of the Universe. I insisted that he sign the poster "he-man". So I have a poster signed "he-man" by Dolph Lundgreen. He didn't even sign his actual name...I couldn't care less. I remember him laughing...seemed like a really freindly guy. :)

1.LMMFAO@ The naked Serial Killer. Nice nude scene by Ola Ray (the Chick from 2.MJ's Thriller video) 3. Charles harrasing the shit out of said Killer until he really snaps and goes after his Daughter. 4. Charles saying "No we won't" really made the film towards the end. Canon had potentual to be a major contender, but they kinda blew it with the breakin and American Ninja sequels. Wasn't Cobra, technically a Canon film BTW ?

by Sean
Almost as silly as some of the more fringe and low key sports of the Olympics...polo, shotput, whatever. There was actually Over The Top toys too when the movie was released. You can basically take the premise and re do it with any number of other activities. Instead of Stallone and his roofed up nemesi battling over arm wrestling, what about a hard core, epic battle of Yahtzee? Uno? Kerplunk? Literally cannot wait for the Electric Boogaloo documentary. Mark Hartley does such an awesome job. And damn I am freaking nervous about the new He_Man film Chu is helming. Don't screw it up.

The new Masters of the Universe toyline may be canceled... TOMORROW!!!

A lot of talk over at He-Man.org right now, about the line possibly being canceled. Apparently, if Mattel doesn't make their subscription quota needs to keep the collectors line running, MOTU:C might be canceled on Aug 7, 2012! A number of people who worked on the 1987 movie have made videos encouraging people to buy subscriptions this year. I don't know if that means that movie figures are coming our way, but it is awesome that Gary Goddard, Pons Maar, and Anthony De Longis are reaching out to fans to show their support for the toyline. Does anyone else remember this, or am I just nuts...but I swear I remember that tons of pre production was done on a version of Masters...that get this: was to have a cast consisting of all kids. I even recall there was like a contest or something to get to be one of the actors! Am I delusional here? I swear this was happening. Even if it wasn't an all children cast I do know for a fact that they were going to be shooting extensively at Craters of the Moon near my childhood home in Idaho (Craters of the Moon is a National Monument and preserve in Southeast Idaho - its all from ancient lava flows, just tons of lava rock and caves). Craters was to serve as exteriors for several locations on Eternia. It was a huge deal that a major motion picture was filming in a place that isn't so much the middle of nowhere as around the bend behind that rock from the middle of nowhere. Then they packed it all in for "budgetary concerns" and the next thing I know its Drago as He-Man and it mostly takes place on Earth. Shrugs, I remember digging it as a kid.

Okay, I'm nuts on the kids in the movie thing...maybe I was confused by something local - they were looking for like 150 extras.
-
This movie wants to be Star Wars sooooo bad. And then they go to earf. Boo!

@ sewiz : There is one kid in the movie who won a contest...
by Ed Travis
I'm pretty sure the director mentions it on the disc's commentary. At one point there is a heavily armored little person in the throne room on Eternia, and that was the little kid who won the contest. Am I right on this one, people? This thread clearly has more informed He Man fans on it than I.
-
Doesn't it alternate back and forth between "Hawk" and "Hawks" every time it's mentioned?

The kid who won the contest is Richard Szponder (AKA Pigboy!)

He will be at Power-Con in LA this Sept! There is a great interview with him at this link: http://www.he-man.org/cartoon/feature.php?id=51&fid=89

@ Mike-el : Yep! I'm pretty sure Robert Loggia just couldn't get "Hawk" out w/out adding the "s"

... kind of like John Huston saying Jake "Gitts" all the time instead of Gittis in CHINATOWN. Only way less amazing.

I am a dork for knowing that, but I don't care.

Goddard is a liar and a fraud, and his MotU movie had a bigger budget than Highlander, Platoon, Aliens and The Untouchables did at around the same time...
by Stegman84
And yet look at what he delivered with said budget, compared to what proper, competent film makers managed to deliver with less money. And he probably doesn't mention Lundgren because Lundgren absolutely hated his guts, as did most of the film's cast and crew. For years Courtney Cox wouldn't even talk about the film... Any enjoyment you may get out of the MotU film is in spite of Goddard's piss poor efforts, not because of them. There's good reason the film was a career killer for him.

Terry, there’s a book on Cannon Films from 1987: http://www.amazon.com/Hollywood-Go-Go-Account-Cannon-Phenomenon/dp/0722193890/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1344340781&sr=1-1&keywords=cannon+yule Also, a more recent book on the DEATH WISH films: http://www.amazon.com/Bronsons-Loose-Making-Death-Films/dp/0595379826/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1344340813&sr=1-1&keywords=death+wish+bronson

.. of all time.. i always mention Masters of the Universe.. its really -that- bad.

producing schlock that sometimes could turn out to be very good. It's a tradition in Hollywood to have these companies that set up some rules, most of the time that your movie had to be genre (horror, sci-fi, comedy, violent crime), had to have some T&A or some effects, and back then, they were often made with incredible earnestness. For the 9,000th time in my life I will say it... with all this affordable HD equipment, plenty of people trying to break in, and more ways to exploit a film than you can shake a stick at - WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THE CORMAN MODEL? That's essentially what some of these companies were following... we have the indie system, I guess, but my god, 99.9% of indie films these days are absolutely awful. Some look technically amazing as the director and crew cream their pants over the latest Red camera tech, but leave their actors and the script twisting in the wind, some feature realistic performances of actors doing absolutely nothing (mumblecore) and then the horror ones are just rehashed cliches that don't even try to put a new spin on anything or to even be entertaining... and many don't even have the T&A. How could nobody have set up a system of turning out affordable little exploitation type films that hone new talent while also at least breaking even and having a helluva good time doing it?
-
Robert Loggia... Samuel L Jackson of his day, he was in EVERYTHING. I hated Over The Top as a teen, cuz I was all about "realism" and "quality" and unable to appreciate the Over the Topness of Over the Top. I just saw it recently on Netflix and luuuvvved it but the kid was just terrible, I thought it mustve been Stallone's real son cuz he was such a bad actor. Last American Virgin is Cannon? Well shut my mouth... that is a classic! A classic! That ending is TRUE. So true and not-Hollywood. Talk about a gut punch. Lawrence Monoson is just perfect in the movie, as is former actor current sleazy entertainment figure Steve Antin.

You are right. We need those middle-tier companies as a place for rookies to learn. A minor-league for the Major Studios. It's where Coppola, Ron Howard, Scorsese, Cameron started, and that's just directors. Tons more actors, writers, cameramen, set builders, production assisitants who became producers in their own right, started with Corman and Cannon movies. In some ways I think Hollywood, with the collapse of the indie-system, is nowtrying to follow the Spielberg/Donner formula: having people start in TV dramas, and then move them to features. The problem is there is still a caste system in Hollywood when it comes to US TV. Many in the movie divisions don't trust directors who only have experience in shooting an 45 minute episode in 8 days, editing it in 5 days, and have it done. The Corman/Cannon-style 90 minute features take 3-4 weeks to shoot. And more than a week to edit. Can a rookie handle the responsibility, stay within budget, and make a decent product? Very few people over the past 25-30 years have been able to jump from US series TV to the big screen. The most recent being Wheadon, and he had to wait 20 years. He had the disappointing Serenity. He only got his hands on Avengers because he was under contract with Marvel, and the Marvel Studio bosses ignored the caste system and said gave him the project. These past 10 years Big-Screen Hollywood has gone to Europe and Australia to find new talent.-----later-----m

You have bad mouthed him in a couple of forums now, and you seem to be the only one doing it. What gives? I have interviewed numerous cast and crew over the years who worked on the 1987 film, and not one of them had any bad things to say about Gary Goddard. I have never had a chance to speak with Dolph Lundgren, but I know that if he had anything bad to say, it hasn't been published on the internet. So where are you getting this inside info from? Are you merely projecting what you believe, or do you have facts to back these statements up? Also, I think it is pretty obvious looking at the film where the money went. That castle throne room was the largest set in Hollywood at the time, and cost millions to make. It was pretty epic. As for Courtney Cox not talking about the film, I think that has more to do with the fact that superhero films were looked down on back then, with the exception of a few Superman and Batman films. As for talk of Masters being a "career killer" for Goddard, that is nonsense. He was asked to direct that film because of his creativity and producing experience. He went off to create his own TV shows after directing the movie; Captain Power and Skeleton Warriors. Goddard has also produced, directed, and designed some of the world's biggest theme park attractions including Jurassic Park: The Ride, Terminator 2-3D, Star Trek: The Experience, Fantasia Lagoon, Jaws, King Kong on the Loose, The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman, James Bond 007: License to Thrill, Six Flag's Monster Mansion, The Mask at Spain's Movieworld, Sanrio Japan, M&M Academy, Caesar's Magical Empire, and the Conan and Ghostbusters live stage shows for Universal Studios. Safe to say, the man has been working steady in the entertainment industry for years.

You cannot do any Canon film's retrospective without mentioning The Apple. Also, I really wish G/G made their version of Spider-Man where he was essentially a werespider bc they never heard of the character.

in which bronson literally rapes a dude. I am a massive freak for charles bronson, so I have mixed feelings about Cannon-- but of course I'm interested.

Film is a total guilty fucking pleasure. From that cold opening at the police station that cuts right to the cheesy, Cannon 80's score credits. And the film has great Bronson lines. I'M NOT A NICE GUY. I'M A MEAN SON OF A BITCH. Or during the interrogation sequence when Bronson pulls out the Suck Off Machine. YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS USED FOR WARREN? IT'S USED FOR JACKING OFF! LOOK AT IT WARREN!! LOOK AT IT WARREN!! And he's shoving his face in it. Movie is great 80's bad.

donkingkong - I wasn't allowed to play with He-Man either.
by sweeneydave
According to my mother, "Only God is the master of the universe..."
-
This is true. And that same God let man create He-Man, so that millions of children would have fun. He-Man was never meant to be the Master of the universe... he was simply a protector of the universe. Parents are just to dumb sometimes.
-
This is also true.

Palooka is a great word. I love 1920s slang. It takes me back to my glorious pre-depression childhood full of playing stick and hoop, pushing hobos in front of trains, and losing fingers at the old sausage factory. Kids today are a worthless lot. Whenever I would talk back to my old man like these game boy playing punks, he'd slap me with a newspaper and give me more polio.
