So The Next X-MEN Film Has A Title...

Nordling here.
It's been rumored for weeks, but I think fans of the comics will be excited to hear Bryan Singer confirm it, via IGN:
"It's called DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, and it deals with aspects of that comic, but also some very new things."
That story arc is one of the most beloved of the X-Men comics, and fans will definitely be paying close attention to make sure they get it right, at least thematically. Considering that Matthew Vaughn will be returning to the helm, and that X-MEN: FIRST CLASS turned out so damn good, I'm already on board.

a shitty line up of mutants to keep it in continuity with Singers first films?
-
Link the 2 time periods, by tying FirstClass pt2 directly in with an X4 set in the not too distant future after X3
-
Or am I going to have to use that Google thing?
-
woooooooooo
-
Laura Shuler-Donner has been talking about it for years, and after First Class opened this was all the writers were talking about. Supposedly it revolves around the JFK assassination and feature Cable.
-
In the future mutants are hunted by sentinels and rounded up into concentration camps. Phoenix, the daughter of jean grey and cyclops in the future comes back in time to prevent the murder of senator kelly which leads to that future

I'm fine with them deviating from the source material to suit the movie continuity
by Rebel Scumb
as long as it maintains the basic idea of time travel, and preventing a dark alternate future The adaptation they did in the 1990s cartoon used Bishop for this storyline instead of Phoenix, which was a good choice in my opinion
-
Impressive. Hopefully they do it justice. Proper Sentinels?
-
...although First Class was pretty good, I admit.

Now I've got that song stuck in my head.

I'll say it if nobody else will: X-Men First Class was horribly, horribly over-rated. I love the actors but it's 100% mediocre.
by golden tribw
Rehashing (poorly done) of whiney we-want-to-fit themes from X-men 1 through 3? Check. Poorly/arbitrarily chosen and badly executed (douchebag quote-unquote-flying over a satellite dish) powers powers for the main cast? Check. Blatant token hot blonde who sucks at her role? Check. Waste of Kevin Bacon? Also check. The only thing I liked about this movie was the way it wove mutant mythology into the missile crisis. Fassbender and McAvoy are good in it, but nowhere near the omg-jizz-my-pants levels you hear from all quarters, and frankly they don't hold a candle to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan. The climax with the navy missiles and the sub coming out of the water was a big let-down. TLDR = stop raving about this movie, I'm not calling it shit but it was about the level of FAST FIVE if you're not up your own ass about comic book bullshit.
-
Can`t wait to see if it`s going to include cast from the original X-men movie. The best idea would be to undo the abysmal X-men 3 with time travel...

@badmrwonka/rebel scumb - It was actually an adult Kate Pryde who sent her consciousness back to inhabit her younger self. @jesus 2099 - Byrne never did the backgrounds, he wasn't any good at it. All the awesome background detailing was done by his inker, the incredible Terry Austin.

by LabattsBleu
BTW, the original Byrne/Claremont story had old Kitty Pride (Kate) going back in time into her younger self to prevent the assassination...not sure where the other synopsis came from... The studio already butchered the Phoenix story line, so hopefully, they won't blow this one... of course, I have much more faith in Vaughn than the one helmed by Ratner... Please don't screw up the sentinels!
-
Kinda like a mashup me mates!!!

Back when I used to read Marvel (and some of Spawn and Mr Hero). I stopped when Peter Parker was revealed to be a clone or something. I said "yeeaaahh too old for this shit" - and I was maybe 13, 14...? So yeah, that's how much I consider superhero comic books to be an artform - it's okay if you're a boy aged 7-12.
-
Tits. Outside of that, I thought it was one of the most overrated pieces of poop to ease it's way out of Hollywood's colon in quite some time. When stacked up against The Avengers, it was just boring and hackneyed.

They get it right and itll be awesome and Vaughn could take Nolans crown especially since he fucked up DKR. Mess it up and he could end up putting his career back big time. Im hoping Vaughn gets this right and a few cameos from other mutants in the future plus the sentinels would be cool. Vaughn, one word of advice, dont let fox fuck with you and do right by the fans and you should be able to pull this off.
-
I didn't get the hype. Was it better than X3? Yeah, but they really screwed the pooch in the last act. Why make Magneto the outright villain in the end? Why not just have he and Charles on the outs after he killed Bacon? Then you could do what the prequels should have done - slow build to villainy while also establishing a close friendship between the protagonists. Also, Beast looked fucking retarded. So did Fish Lips Banshee and Hula Hoop Havok.

"Considering Matthew Vaughn will be returning to the helm..." AND THE FACT THEY'VE NEVER MADE A MOVIE THAT EVEN RESEMBLED THE COMIC BOOK, THERE ISN'T A F**KING CHANCE IN HELL THIS WILL TURN OUT REMOTELY LIKE THE COMIC BOOK
by FloatingHolmes
But Fox has the FF and X-Men, so at least the future climax can (conceivably) take place in the Baxter Building as John Byrne conceived it. (and if you didn't know, John Byrne plotted this entire story himself as a way to show Chris Claremont that Sentinels could be badass.) Please, Mr. Vaughn, come and show us all what Byrne and Claremont did wrong. Please fix their story the way you showed us how stupid Lee and Kirby were. Your total lack of respect for the comics is inspiring. AICN, apparently, can't wait for you to piss all over this story and make it yours. HAVE AT IT, BRO!
-
Stephen Lang as Cable would be the best casting of any comic book movie, ever. Not that Cable's the greatest character, but damn if he wasn't born to play the part.
-
Everything about him, including his accent and face, is absolutely perfect for that role. Plenty of rural Canadians have redneck drawls. Jackman seems like a caricature to me at this point, especially after that terrible Gavin Hood film and his cameo in First Glass. He has always been a fine actor, just a little soft of voice and a little too damn... Fruit of the Loom.
-
Days of Futures Past uses time travel. Please utilize this to fix, or render useless, the events of X-Men 3. It doesn't have to be a huge part of the plot, but maybe just a nod that the events of the future are possibly altered by something that happens in this prequel. Hell, bring back an extended cameo from someone from the original trilogy to carry this out. Who would want to go back in time to save Professor X? Make it so. Thank you.

I am so sick of the geek community and the critics sucking up to this man. Kick Ass was a loathsome adaptation of a classic Tarantino-style comic story. While I really, really appreciated the camp and mod elements to New Class- they made it like a COMIC BOOK, like X2, overall his movies have the gravity and realism of a 90210 episode. It is careful, careful filmmaking, too color processed... ever since Layer Cake this man has chosen his colors like Delta Burke picking out fabric swatches... and sickeningly cute. I feel like everything he's made since Stardust has appealed to the worst aspects of the Twilight- segment of fandom. I've watched him adapt some of my very favorite stories into movies and turn them into pastel airport novels.

Is anyone else old enough to remember the month where the headlines were all about some guy named Russell Crowe who was trying to decide between an offer to play Aragorn, an offer to play Wolverine in X-men, and the lead in a Ridley Scott Gladiator film?
by lox4444
I was thrilled that he took Gladiator at the end of it, because I didn't want "the bad guy from Virtuosity" getting either of those roles I'd been waiting to see filled for my entire childhood. Looking back on it(yea, I know, his film choices haven't been great lately) I really wish I could have seen his take or either of the other two films.
-
I love it.
-
I know what Rothman wanted, the problem is when you have a director who does not have the balls to stand up to a Fox executive, you get X-3 and FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
-
. . . blows my mind at least 3 times a day. It helps that I finally just saw it 2 weeks ago. I accepted EVERY change and variation from the comic and STILL thought it was horrible. Fass' was awesome, Bacon was good, McAvoy was serviceable and then there was everything else. The writing, the editing, the direction, the budget. Every youngster, including Lawrence, was just awful. I flat out hated 90% of it. Make that 95 . . .
-
You had one director driven out, and another bailing due to family issues (lol, bullshit), with six weeks left before filming nothing Ratner could've done would've saved it.....besides begging them to recast Cyclops thus avoiding his death.

1st and foremost it was the 1st X-men movie in which Wolverine and Rouge are not the star. I hate how Wolverine get top billing in all the X-men movies I don't find him that interesting a character. Secondly what it did perfectly was show the relationship between Prof X and Magneto, how that relationship formed and the moment cemented there friendship forever, followed by the moment that forever would seperate them. Those 2 moments automatically give everything else a pass.

by cock smoker
Self absorbed asshole. I've been coming to this site since 98 and seeing Harry morph into a complete douche with no interest in the content on this site is sad. His writing has gone down hill and his exterior motives for trashing some projects and sucking up to others is transparent and proof that he no longer speaks for whatever segment of fans he once did. I've come to this site for the past 7 years only for the talkbacks. Mostly to read posts from the bottom dwellers who can never be satisfied with art they could never think to create or be inspired enough to even dream about. Armchair quarterbacks in the game of life. Fucking children, led by a man child who is ripe with anger and regret because he can't help himself. You deserve each other.

I actually think the relationship between Charles and Erik was super rushed. It seemed less like the deep friendship and falling out Patrick Stewart suggested and more like two dudes who got stuck with each other for a weekend and didn't particularly like each other. -
because you can tell that Fox absolutely hates this property. When it comes to budgets, and marketing, deadlines, and Fox's (Rothman's) total disrespect for the franchise. The fact that they've been able to tell somewhat coherent stories with half decent action is a freaking marvel. And if there is a better A+ action/comic book movie with as short a production time, and budget as 1st class and X-2 then I apoligize for any unwarranted praise, but I don't think there has been.

-
...what were you expecting people? Rushed production. Abandoned franchise. This could have been X-3 really easy, as it stood, Magneto and Xavier carried an entire movie to a great level of success. Yes, the other X-Men sucked. It's still the second best X-Men movie we have to date.
-
Brings back some great memories...
-
Saw it on DVD and was very disappointed. Expected a lot better, given how crazy everyone here went for it. Thought Fassbender (who can be very good) overacted to hilarious effect, and it would have been better if they had just rebooted the franchise so they could use the actual first five x-men instead of mangling continuity to try and avoid... mangling continuity. Bleah.
-
Actually I think FC would have been much better if they just used it as a chance to reboot the series entirely instead of sticking to Cyclops, Jean et al being 2000's and going with nonsensical mishmosh of characters for the "team".
-
Fuck yeah.

its a reflection of your poor decision making skills and not on the quality of what you deem not as good that others deemed good basically, stop using others opinions to justify your opinion. if you like/dislike something, fine. justify it with your own opinion whenever i see the word overrated, I know instantly that that person opinion does not qualify on anything... unless if opinions only mattered in a census... but it dont, so it doesnt ps: "she gave me an orgasm but it wasnt as good as an orgasm as the one she gave you" is basically what i hear

Anyone even remotely aware of the characters involved is in a constant state of disbelief on first viewing. One's head does not stop shaking. However, go back to this film. Have a lot of booze on hand. Preferably do this alone, or with a like minded rube. Drink prodigiously, or better yet, come in at least one sheet to the wind. If you choose a particularly savage liquor, such as Jag or Wild Turkey, appreciation of the film will be more quickly achieved. If you partake, and add smoke to the mix, this is a can't miss film. Especially the final reveal of "Deadpool." Tears will flow my friends.

...and the comments that were made about distancing themselves from the first Wolverine film when Wolverine's Japanese Vacation was greenlit, but with Singer back on board as executive producer, X3 not being his story, and both it and Wolverine sharing the main inconsistencies plaguing the timeline, most noticeably Xavier's handicap and Scott's age, as well as those two films being shat upon by the fans they're trying to lure back with a film that more than likely will correct the problems of the third entry, it's not only safe to say this is one hell of a run on sentence but those two movies are no longer part of the picture much like Ridley Scott shooting down everything after Aliens.

The sequel should be about getting the original five together. Then do 'Days of Future Past' for the third. But they've obviously got to squeeze Kitty Pryde in there somewhere as she's the one that comes back in time. Talk about fucking with canon. And please keep Cable out of it. Cable would make zero sense to the mainstream movie goer, and had zero to do with the original 'Days of Future Past' storyline. Marvel: Show some of us true believers some respect and please get it right this time.
-

How can they get the orginal five in there when Scott was shown as like a seven year old in First Class.
by Shermdawg
Bobby hasn't even been born yet. Why do they need to squeeze Kitty Pryde in when she's not even born yet? And why keep Cable out of it because he had nothing to do with the original storyline? It's not like this series has stuck to the comics, and they can't really do so now, and these movies are a lot of mainstream movie goers first introductions to these characters anyway, so they're not gonna be confused when Cable turns out to be Bishop's buddy in the future instead of Scott and Maddy's kid. Oh, and also, why address "Marvel" and ask them to get things right this time, when it's not Marvel's film to get "right", it's Fox's.

@chairman_kaga- I concede that. I would have rather had a full reboot as well. I was saying that given the circumstances, i.e. they wanted to keep their twisted continuity semi-intact, they did the best they could...
by ThulsaBoom
...of course a proper FC film should feature Beast, Angel, Jean, Cyclops, Iceman and Proffesor X as the X-Men. At the rate they're rebooting things we'll only have to wait ten years.
-
Aug. 2, 2012, 1:17 a.m. CST
In ten years they'll probably go for something more akin to the current comics lineup.
by Shermdawg
At some point all hope will be lost for a proper adaptation of X-men, even if Marvel gets the rights. I mean, you can't use the WW2 origins forever for Mags. He'll have to be reimagined somewhere down the line.
-
Aug. 2, 2012, 1:22 a.m. CST
I've said it before and I'll say it again, X-men would work better as a tv series.
by Shermdawg
Way too many characters, relationships, storylines and ideals to cover in movie form......especially when the people behind it think that mutant rights is the only thing this property is about.
-
As a whole. 1 is an overgrown trailer. Awful. 2 is a . . . movie. Pretty good. 3 had not-embarassing-wire-fu action for the first time, and hints to some actual comic storylines, though the similarity to the comics got even further away. Wolverine made it alllll worse. First Class, while being the best made, is like the furthest from the comics superhero film ever made. Now they're gonna gay up Future Past. Fuck you.

So we are going to the 90's from the future?? Thought they were taking the series to the 70's 80's
by LowDevil
Not disappointed, i love this story but they cant do it justice with 1 film.
-
Donner/ has already said the continuity with be fast tracked to ten years in the future. So instead of late 60's/early 70's it will be late 70's/early 80's. And it would fit with Singer's 'Cyclops, Storm and Jean were some of my first students' in the X-Men Singerverse. Emma could have split for the H.Club by then (you can't kill Kevin Bacon with a coin through the head, he'll have survived),the original five could be together by then, Kitty could be the new kid, etc. In fact, better idea, give us a re-imagined version of the Dark Phoenix Saga for the next film. Audiences would buy that a lot faster. And yeah, it's still with Fox, but Marvel does obviously have some influence, or Stan the Man wouldn't get his cameos. And you're quite right, bring on the reboot.
-
It's Fox not Marvel. They'll screw up the Sentinels, I'm 100% sure but happy to be proved wrong in 3 years time..

Matthew Vaughn was granted autonomy to make First Class..
by ganymede3010
Granted, the general story was written by Bryan Singer, however he was able to make the film that he wanted, not the movie that Tom Rothman wanted. In my opinion first class is arguably the best of the series (still have mad love for X2 though).
-
There's no way they're going to allocate the amount of money needed to trully bring the Sentinels to life. I'm hoping FOX will prove me wrong though.
-

Donner/ has already said the continuity with be fast tracked to ten years in the future.
by Shermdawg
Ten years would be early 70's given First Class' setting, and given the there's been so much talk of the film opening with the JFK assassination and that fitting in with the Days storyline, I don't see how that could be.....unless they still use Robert Kelly (albeit a younger Kelly), and his assassination attempt comes on the heels of the Kennedys, and MLK, so maybe. However, casting a new Cyclops, Jean, and Storm for the First Class period, while dealing with the DoFP future as well as retconning the original Singerverse future seems like too much going on, especialyy if they intend to bring back the original cast to lead off into X4.....or X3 depending on how you look at it. Vaughn's writing team has their work cut out of them on this one, that's for certain. And regarding Dark Phoenix, despite them absolutely fucking that storyline up in X3, with as much crap as Sony and Mark Webb has got over the Spidey reboot, do you think mainstream audiences would be so easily accepting of a redo this soon after with Scott Summers placed in his rightful role without any real build up of making him a respectable character compared to the likes of "Mr.Cool" Wolverine? Bryan was actually gonna do that with his X3-X4 supposedly, but of course that never came to be, and Scott was killed off because Marsden backed Singer and took a role in Superman Returns. Hopefully though, now that they're resetting things, and this movie may open the door for over the top science fiction elements in the series, they may retry one day, but give us a real deal destroyer of worlds outer space Phoenix story.

-
It doesn't have to be exact...but Marvel and Fox have really fucked up the X-Men and related continuity. Making Emma Frost; Silver Fox's sister? Rogue (a born and raised Southern chick) meets Wolverine in Alaska? Storm gets thrown down an elevator shaft but she's unaffected by her claustrophobia? Havok has to flashdance inside day glow hula hoops to use his powers? Characters from later storylines like Nightcrawler's father and Whirlwind are in the Hellfire Club but they couldn't squeeze in more original members? Blob and Lady Deathstrike were part of the Weapon X programme? Xavier gets crippled by a bullet? Cyclops has eyebeams that can level a school but they het held back by a pair of red tinted aviator glasses (I don'tknow a lot of foster families that can afford ruby quartz)? Giving Deadpool Katanas that come out of his arms, teleportation powers and Cyclop's eye beams with immediate full control which Cyclops still doesn't have decades later? Wolverine lost his memory by an Adamantium bullet to the brain? Give me a friggin' break. How hard would it be to actually get it right? It's one of the most popular pieces of collected, ongoing fiction in comic history. Why fuck with it so much?

I thought it was a really cool story, although it's been copied a few times now, in particular that first season episode of Heroes set in the future was very similar. I can see some people complaining about originality if they don't know the source material. This should definitely confirm once and for all if this is a reboot or part of the first three X-Men films as they're going to have to use the actors from the earlier films for the future scenes. In theory it can't be Kitty Pryde going back in time either as Ellen Page played her in X3, so she can't exist in the First Class era as there's no body for her to transmit her mind into. Unless of course Singer and Vaugn plan to wipe X3 from the continuity...!
-
And she was on the run.

As far as the Sentinels.... How about getting somebody who actually hasn't forgotten the art of practical effect to do them?
by cookepuss
CG is fine. I do it for a living. However, practical models are a lost art. We've also seen stop motion movies that hold their own with CG. I think that it's totally possible to bring the Sentinels to life with practical effects.
-
Still doesn't forgive something that could have been easily portrayed as her original arrival at the school. If you're going to make a film based on something, IMHO, the base it on the original source material as much as possible. Why waste the studio's time in creating something new when it's already written for you and done incredibly well? Spend the cash/time on better FX and better actors.

You're forgetting Jean was reborn as the Phoenix. She only became the Dark Phoenix because her mind was tampered with by Mastermind and the White Queen! John Byrne...
by Merlin_Ambrosius
...hated the character of the Phoenix and convinced Chris Claremont to do The Dark Phoenix saga with the result of having Jean Grey lobotomized and left with no psychic gifts. Then that prat Jim Shooter stepped in and ordered them to kill her off. Then after ruining everything that asshole John Byrne quits the X-Men. Bryan Singer's idea was to have X3 focus on the Jean's evolution as the Phoenix and X4 introducing the White Queen (a role written for Sigourney Weaver) who's tampering with Jean's mind causes her to become the Dark Phoenix. The end results is her committing suicide and being reborn as a being in space reminiscent of the Star Child in 2001: A Space Odyssey. I would have had a time gap between X3 & X4 giving her time to give birth to twins Rachel Summers and Cable. But that's my idea.

From the bit where Eric kills everyone in the room EXCEPT Shaw, whom he's seen have his mother killed, to Angel who, tired of being objectified and taken advantage of by humans, slips on a fetish leather number and joins a bunch she's seen kill a mutant, the film made little sense. Very bad writing.

Time travel lets them fudge the continuity errors from the first film, Star Trek style, and shoehorn Wolverine in there. And no, they won't recast Wolverine. ...considering the principle cast members from First Class are all confirmed to return. This means the time period of the film will have to be somewhere around late 70s/early 80s, which I guess is a good thing since the story was written in 1981. And considering Wolverine factored in heavily in the original story, it'd be pretty ironic if Fox chose not to include Wolverine in the movie at all, since Fox has really overused the character to date.
-
It's that balloon-titted hack, Jane Goldman, who's an absolute fucking blight on scriptwriting.

The first half of first class was as good a movie as you could really expect from a sixties set Mutant movie. Magnetos mother scene, anything with mystique and Charles in England,The unbelievable scene where magneto kills the three guys in Argentina. Xavier reveals to the cia. The amazing scenes in the Hellfire club and then when they first catch up with Shaw on the boat. That is an unbelievable half of a movie. However then the kids turn up. Every scene that centred on the kids that joined half way through was terrible. The choices for secondary characters were terrible. Everyone of them didnt work in my opinion. The flying insect girl possibly being the worst. The training montage was terrible. Killing of Darwin considering his indestructible ability was terrible. Anything with banshee and havoc was pretty bad. There were still some great scenes in the second half but all involved the characters from the first half of the film. Namely the attack on the cia base and when they were in russia. I hope they can pull of Days Of Future Past because it is a great story and its the one ive been waiting for since i saw it in the nineties.
-
You got gazoodles of years of canon and instead of using those characters they decide to invent some new mutants (no pun intendd) that suck balls! And please dont get me started on the which came first the cyclops or the havoc debacle. First Class was a piece of first class shite ! @rupee88: You know that fans are going to be expecting at least one Sentinel an a Wolverine death scene, right?
by cookepuss
Of the whole DoFP story, that's the most iconic scene. Singer & Vaughn would be asses to not include that one future scene. Wolverine doesn't have to appear in the present. Fans will just want to know that he is in the future and will get BBQed by a giant bot. The rest of the story can be spun however they want. That one scene is what'll sell the movie for some fans.
-
Aug. 2, 2012, 9:30 a.m. CST
@moneygrabsequel: Rebooting the X-Men movies in the 60s has its share of problems too.
by cookepuss
For example, suppose that an 18 year old Cyclops joined the team 3 years after the movie took place (1962). That'd be 1965. If the next movie jumped ahead to the present day, Cyclops would be 65 years old and ready for retirement. Only Magneto, Wolverine, & Xavier would be properly aged. That's why there's a sliding time scale in the Marvel Universe. If the X-Men were formed about 50 year ago, real time, then it might be that they were only formed 10-15 years ago Marvel time. That number rarely changes. That's why, if you see their origin being retold, it's almost never situated back in the 1960s. They update the date of origin. They do that with the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man too. Only characters like Captain America, whose origins are rooted in a specific event, are date locked. Everybody else just, well, slides.
-
Maybe Wolverine will get a 30 second cameo like in the first one but just saying he won't be even a minor character in the film.

We don't serve their kind- they'll have to wait outside.
-
It'll never happen. Fox makes way too much money from their X-Men-related films that they will punch out an X-men movie every couple years so they will retain ownership. I think if they ever went 4 years without doing a film, then the rights would kick back to Marvel. Good luck with that happening.

Given the timeline of this series and the story set up in the first movie, this will likely be cherry picking a few elements and then just doing it's own thing. Just thought I'd point this pout so no one gets all angry when they don't see what they're expecting to see.
-
is that the Sentinels have taken over North America. They were designed to control the mutant problem but in Terminator style decide that all humans are the problem. In order to stop this several X-men (and the Fantastic Four) and their children escape and send Kitty now Kate back in time to warn the present day X-men to stop the assassination of Senator Kelly. The Brotherhood has decided to kill him to stop his antimutant agenda. This could be a very solid movie if they follow the comic. Obviously can't use the FF, but there is enough X-men characters to fill the gap. The future needs an Escape From New York vibe, the Sentinels need to be 25 foot tall robots (not just soldiers or guys in super exo skeletons). Wolverine, really needs to be fried to the bone, Colossus and Storm all die. But please no Rachel Summers, what would be the point Scott is dead and the Phoenix was a complete waste. Also no Nimrod, or any other shitty 90's comics or cartoons please! And God please no alternative earth crap. Follow issues 141 and 142 with some changes to characters and this is easily a slam dunk super hero movie.
-
He's from that alternate future, isn't he?
-
We used to joke that Rob Liefeld was watching the Sci-Fi channel on cable when asked for his input.

Bryne was drawing the FF in the 80's and I recall that being when he went to doing photo copied city scapes behind his art. It seemed super cool at time and i didn't see any other comic doing that (at least none of ones i saw). He conituned it in Alpha Flight as well. Byrne's FF was awesome.

Whether we get a new actor for Wolverine - we still need the real Wolverine...(spoilrs)
by Darth Macchio
Jackman is great in the role but the one thing I've always hated about their interpretation of Wolverine was that he was so ready to weep and break down crying, falling to his knees. In every tragic or sad moment in these movies, Wolverine cries, faces goes red, he falls to his knees (or has trouble standing) and he just weeps and talks. The Wolverine from the comic might cry, might have his face go red...but he would NOT fall to his knees and weep, he'd flip the fuck out and tear everything to pieces. Actually risking the safety of those he cares about as he'd be utterly lost in a very dangerous beserker rage. That's the Wolverine I want to see. The one who would have torn that house to pieces after seeing Xavier killed. He would have practically gone feral after seeing his girlfriend killed. After seeing Jean get killed - he would have been struck by an inconsolable RAGE, not weepy crying blubbering. I'm not trying to hate here - Jackman is about a foot too tall but he still nails 95% of what I've read. Now, I have not read everything about the character but still - he's not a blubbering crier, his primary emotional outburst is berserker rage, not 'fall to your knees' despair. That's the Wolverine I want to see. Oh yeah, Wolvie also should not be the primary focused character in the movie. He should be no more the primary than someone like Beast or Kitty Pride or Colossus (actually, it would be very kewl to see more of Piotr and not some guy in a silver suit either).

I'm sure they will do the comic justice, just like the Dark Phoenix Saga
by Erik Radvon
The movie will grab elements from the comic story when it serves the lazy screenwriters, then proceed to chop n skew it with Hollywood bullshit, before showing us some whiz-bang action in the third act. The only way to get excited about an X-Men movie is imagine watching it on a rainy Saturday when there is nothing else to do. I enjoyed First Class in that regard, and I expect Days of Future Past will be the same mediocre effort. Bonus points if Mrs. Draper is wearing lingerie.

However, he (Jackman) was great in perhaps the most memorable scene; "Fuck yourself'! Nice to see Rose Byne from Damages, in a major supporting role as well as 24's Agent Pierce as a corrupt High ranking officer. As for this Darwin, the bruh didnt last through half the picture. (I thought Hollywood had progressed with the changing times and not be too quick to kill off Black characters in Sci Fi films. What gives? lol) and he as well as Erik and Charles had Major potentual to support the film's era/setting such as the Civil rights struggle which the dumb ass writers easily ommited. Good film nontheless, mostly due to Fassbender and Bacon.

You sir are a world class comedian (sarcasm). Why aren't you a famous comedian or at least making a bajillion dollars writing comedy (again sarcasm). Hilarious, my man (If you guessed sarcasm, then you sir can recognize patterns). Please do continue to grace us with your humorous asides (yeah sarcasm, please don't).

This Would Suggest the Presence of Some Sort of Plot
by Lesbianna_Winterlude
a refreshing change for X-Men
-
According to Dictionary.com Plot - Also called storyline. the plan, scheme, or main story of a literary or dramatic work, as a play, novel, or short story. According to Merriam-Websters Dictionary Plot - the plan or main story (as of a movie or literary work) According to Wikipedia.org Plot - a literary term defined as the events that make up a story, particularly as they relate to one another in a pattern, in a sequence, through cause and effect, how the reader views the story, or simply by coincidence. How does X-Men: First Class violate any of these definitions therefore causing it to have no plot? Maybe people who claim a work has no plot should find a better way of articulating what they don't like about said work.
-
Count on them to trash a great story or tromp upon it.
-
But they're going to put some new bullshit in it so we can hate it!
-
I have that issue! It'll be going up in value!!! What will you give me for it???
-
But isn't it really just The Terminator: X-Men edition? Also, I would bet that they use Wolverine or some other character from the first three movies (four including the Wolverine movie) in the Kitty Pride/Bishop role. They've already connected the two timelines with Hugh Jackman in First Class, so we know they are in the same universe.
-
X-Men purist do not consider Singer's First Class as the real first class of X-Men.... The movie was nice, but Fox is just fucking up the X-Men lore at this point.
-
Just for you, inglorious bastard :)
-
Billy Crystal as Sammy Davis Jr. should play Cyclops.
-
...but Cable; yeah Terminator/6 Million Dollar Man wannabe.
-
good catch, didn't realize it had been that long since days of future past.
-
You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.
-
I absolutely believe, Fox and Vaugn are taking a page from JJ's Star Trek and using an established canonical time travel story to reboot and recast the franchise excrement stink that was left in Ratner's wake. I'm all for a time traveling plot device... (Maybe the last stand Xavier who's conciousness was transplanted into a new host, reaches out to The groovy McAvoy Xavier... Not unlike the psychic time traveling, that in the comics, was displayed by Rachel Summers?)... that wipes out the continuity of the first three films and utilizes the 60's set First Class franchise as a bridge to reboot and recast the modern day X-Men franchise. Also, whomever suggested Tom Hardy as Jackman's Wolverine successor, is pretty much a genius. -B
-
Days of future past is supposed to feature someone coming back from the future, a future that's post-X3.. So either they are gonna have to disregard that movie or actually link the events at the end of x3 to this one. Or, an even more unlikely option, is they use time-travel to prevent the events of X3 (I wish). Either way it's pretty doubtful this film will use kitty pride's character to come back in time. It will either be Bishop (if they dont connect it to X3) or it will be, as told in the Wolverine and the X-Men version, Professor X, who according to Wikipedia, "is in a coma for 20 years after what happened in the first episode.(X3) When he wakes up,(in that other dude's body) he finds that the mutants of his world are imprisoned by the Sentinels. He telepathically connects with the X-Men of the past to try to prevent that future from happening. The fact that they are using a time-travel story, and that Bryan Singer is involved makes for fascinating speculation. Its not hard to believe that Singer would want to connect the new films to his original series. The fact that Jackman's Wolverine is in first class seems to confirm that.
-
Doubt they'll use Logan; however, I can easily imagine a scenario where they'll revisit Ellen Page's Kitty, who will be transplanted to the distant past by the displaced consciousness of Xavier (seen at the end of "Last Stand"). I can also imagine a storyline that simply simply follows the psychically displaced consciousness of the "present day" Singer/Rattner, formerlynPatricknStewart, Xavier as he psychically reaches back into the past to communicate with McAvoy's "First Class" Xavier and warns his younger self of future danger... Who in turn follows future X's advice and thereby, very, conveniently Fox can wipeout the continuity, and Ratner clusterf**k, of the first three X-Men films. As I wrote earlier, even if it's a move inspired by JJ's Star Trek, psychic time travel was used several time's in Claremont's run on Uncanny, not just in the "Day's of Future Past" arc. I'm sure the Studio is chomping on the bit to chase some of that Avenger money with a recast present day set X-Men film comprised of its most well known characters (i.e., Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Kitty, Angel, and Rouge). -B

Maybe an outraged fan travels back in time to eliminate X3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine from existence?
by Royston Lodge
One can only hope.
-
I Loved "First Class" but please, please... DO. NOT. FUCK. THIS. UP! That is all.
-
I'm not convinced that they wouldn't go the Logan route. He wouldn't have to be a main character, just the Macguffin. But really I think Xavier is far more likely. I do think this will probably be some sort of reboot, so they can figure a way to bring back in some original mutants like cyclops, jean gray, rogue, etc, though.

If time travel happens in the future..........................................
by crackerfarmboy
then wouldn't we already know about it? Think about it...

It sucks that he was wasted in the other X-men movies. Colossus is a great character and deserves to be more than just a minor character.

Afraid that this is like Fox tackling Galactus with the second FF film: too soon, too little!
by kevred
Are we going to get DOFP without Wolverine, Kitty, Colossus, the FF connection, etc? No, no, no! This one is special. Save this one for when the cast, actors and budget are all there to make a special, epic film. Not just a sequel to the second-tier X-series. I like First Class. But they are in no position to leap from that pretty-decent restart all the way to one of the classic X-stories of all time - something that can, and SHOULD, bring in the full range of Marveldom that's available. Do they want an Avengers-type epic? They don't have enough of the Marvel universe to make it work! Save this one, please. Save it for when more of the Marvel characters are in the same studio (it will happen) and it can be something special.

does this post mean starring wolverine again?? FML i'm so tired of wolverine. and if he does join the team they better give him a fucking mask
by patrick cruz

Don't get me wrong, I hate him, but isn't it a choice between him, his dad, Laurence Fishburn, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington? Black actors are harder to find that feminists at a Daniel Tosh standup routine.

They need to sort out continuity and recast the whole franchise so that it mirrors X-Men comics canon. There are three basic groups of X-Men: 1) The Original Line-Up: This is Cyclops as a skilled yet understated leader, Jean Grey/Marvel Girl prior to developing Phoenix-level powers, The Beast prior to transforming into a furry man-animal, the Angel as a cooly superior rich kid, and young Bobby Drake as Ice Man, all guided by Professor X. To sort out continuity, you need not use this version of the team as the main characters in a re-boot. Rather, just show them inextended flashback to establish them as the Original X-Men. 2)The Claremont/Byrne Core Team: This should be the core focus group of the re-booted X-Men. Still lead by an older and more experienced Cyclops, with Jean Grey nearing her Phoenix-phase, also with Nightcrawler, Rogue, Wolverine, Storm, and Collossus, and a young Kitty Pryde. The triangle between Cyclops, Jean, and Wolverine can still be a sub-text, but the earlier movies have played it out, so it should not be in the foreground of the plot. Rather, Kitty Pryde should be the P.O.V. character, new to the team, her future relationship with Collossus in a nascent form. Professor X still leads strategically while Cyclops is tactical/operational commander. Moira, Banshee, and Havok could all be background/cameo characters, along with Angel, Beast, and Ice Man, used as needed by the story. Rogue should be an adult, unlike the Singer movies, where she was essentially playing the young Kitty Pryde role, new to the X-Men. 3)The post-80s/Dark 90s bullshit team: cardboard characters like Bishop and Cable don't really stand-up well against the Claremont/Byrne Classic line-up. The only interesting character from this period is Gambit, in my opinion. Bishop and Cable, if used, should not be leads, but rather supporting characters. The filmmakers could use Days of Future Past as a device to re-boot the franchise, set up the history into the three groups mentioned, and then focus on the core Claremont/Byrne Team to tell stories based on the X-Men comics canon.
-
No more X3.... or Wolverine.
-
That's all I want cause I find him to be the best X character. I want Gambit done right. I don't think this movie will be the one to do it. But there is always hope. Also I want cyclops to actually be the smart badass leader he is.
-
Make it happen!!!
-
...will somehow cause Magneto of the future to change sides? In the comics, Magneto turned "good" after SECRET WARS (since the Beyonder could read his thoughts). This would be a great way to make this happen...since we are unlikely to ever see a SECRET WARS film (which would rock more than anything before it).
-
I think they "borrowed" the Brood from "Alien" and Arcade from Westworld, too.

@ Kevred, I agree it's sorta too soon however they can make it work.
by ganymede3010
The Fantastic 4 is suppose to be released XMAS 2013. That way they can re-introduce the new cast well before the next XMEN movie which is being released in 2014. So in essence, they can have, FF, Silver Surfer, Wolverine, and if they were smart, they would allow Dare Devil and Dead Pool cameo and play some sort of pivotal role. Those characters are enough IMO to compete with Avengers. However, it all depends on how strong the new cast members are. Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Fassbender, McAvoy are good enought to go toe to toe in terms of acting with the Avengers cast.
-
In the comics, the DoFP storyline opens in the future, where mass-produced Sentinel robots have killed or captured most of the mutants. Only a handful are left alive, one of them being Wolverine. He's trying to help some of the captured mutants escape when the Sentinels find them. I won't go into what happens, but it's awesome. The 2nd part of the story is in the past, showing what led up to mutants being massacred. I time traveler appears to try and stop the events and change the future...
-
Oh, God YES!!!! She would be perfect. Embodying the beauty and dignity of Storm. Keep Halle Berry far, far away from any comic book movies. Anyone remember Catwoman?

SSSSOOOOOONNNNNYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

I used to watch Pushing Daisies and can't remember Christine Adams. Who did she play?

Matthew Vaughn is hack and should only direct A&E movies.
by sasquatch_with_a_swatch_watch
Its not the screenwriting. Its a guy with a lot of money, who I'm sure gives a great PowerPoint presentation. Even if they re-title it Days of Power Point Presentations, I'm not gonna see it. I spent weeks agonizing over whether I should see that movie in the theater, only to give it a whirl on the DVD months later, and confirmed what I've felt about Vaughn since I saw Kick Ass. This is a man who's given HUGE fuckin budgets to make movies that look like small-green Jennifer Aniston pants. Please finish up the Kick Ass story, but I'm done with this cats' films... Nothing other than X2 has felt anything like the X-verse, and all that is, is a world of savagery and science, movies that don't live in florescent-lit hallways or the immersive world of Cerebro, they are about outsiders trying to find their way in the world and great character work. The things that set the truly great comic films apart like Blade 2 or the Donner Superman is that they care about character work and don't pander to either science nerds or WWF fucktards, which is who so many of these films seem to be aimed at. Also, speaking of Cerebro. This thing of cracking a joke about the equipment, or the car (Batman) as a way to de-emphasize the comic-bookyness of a story? IS FUCKING STUPID.
-
It will probably be a two-parter And will allow them to set two separate time lines to distance themselves from the shitty dead-end from X-3 Real fight between X-men and Sentinels!!! And the last part will have the rise of... Apocalypse!!!
-
The truth is that although Singer's X-Men were okay, they never reached the greatness this franchise deserves to be at. I'm not a huge fan of time travel, a bit over used. But in this case, I think it will allow for some great things. Hopefully by the end of the movie, all three X-movies are wiped away. I think we are likely to have Mystique or Emma Frost pushed into the future. I just hope once this is over, the timeline is pushed into the present and all the best characters are together. From there we can have a true X-Men movie with Cyclops as the leaders and focus.
-
Singer put us in this mess by making Wolverine the focus of the first two movies. It wasn't a team movie at all. This is why you get a comic guy and a guy who knows how to direct an ensemble to handle these movies. Whedon knew that CAP had to be the leader of the Avengers and not Iron Man. It would have been an easy (studio move) to write the Avengers movie around the well established Iron Man. You had the more popular actor (RDJ) and character (with two Iron Man movies in the hole). They could have easily tried to make Iron Man the Avenger's leader. But Whedon knew that he had to make that team defer to Captain America and it worked. Singer put Wolverine in charge. That's like making Greedo shot first. It's screws up both characters and screws up the team dynamics. Singer's XMINO should be forgotten as well. Honestly, just give Marvel back this franchise so they can do it right.

@wierdo27, agree with you 100% on Bassett. She would have owned the role and elevated the whole series.
