Eastwood DVD Box Sets Revealed
El Cosmico here, with the contents of the two upcoming Clint Eastwood DVD box sets.
Now, I don't need to tell you that Eastwood is a god, or that you need a bunch of his DVDs in your collection. What I do need to tell you is that Warner Bros. really should have taken a few moments to consider fan interest when picking these sets...unless they're really well priced. Here they are:
The 6 DVD set includes:
Dirty Harry
Escape From Alcatraz
For A Few Dollars More
In The Line of Fire
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Okay, that could have been a LITTLE more badass, but those are all movies I want on DVD, so I figure it's a pretty good set. All of these aren't what I'd consider essential, but they're all pretty damn good. Now, the additional titles in the 10 (formerly twelve) DVD set are:
Beguiled
Bridges of Madison County
Bronco Billy
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
To quote my source, Dennett Reins, on this, "Why they chose these titles? Don't know. Why For A Few Dollars More instead of Fistful of Dollars or The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly? Don't know. Don't know. Don't know." Well, I don't know either. I'm not gonna say that these aren't good box sets, I think all of these films in both sets are probably worth having, but instead of a "good" box set, what I was really hoping for was a "badass" box set. You see, since Clint Eastwood himself is totally badass, it only makes sense that his box set should be as well. Makes sense to me. Dennett also says that there won't be anything "special" on these discs...they're repackaged, not special editions. The gift box supposedly has a cool design though. Unfortunately, the quality of a gift box doesn't typically affect the viewing experience.

The "For a Few Dollars More" vs. "Fistful of Dollars" is probably just a weird rights issue as I can't imagine why "For a Few Dollars More" would be in there other than to make people pay a few more bucks and buy "Fistful..." or "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." This set might actually be worth having.

Hell, as long as Bronco Billy isn't in the box set, or even every Which Way but Loose , which have to into my top ten hate films of all time, then this box set is alright by me! Dirty Harry, Few Dollars More, Unforgiven are all great, and I have to confess to a certain weakness for Josey Wales. I think perhaps they should have done a Western box set, with High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider, and one with a selection of his other films, rather than a mishmash of all his films.

Do you people even pay attention to what is on the market?? That 1st box is just repackaging already released titles. I think every one of those 1st 6 disc's is already out. I've owned OUTLAW and UNFORGIVEN for a year or more, AND FOR THE LAST TIME, THERE IS ALREADY A MAN WITH NO NAME BOXSET CONTAINING THE 3 LEONE TITLES. THESE ARE ALREADY OUT ON DVD. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!

I'm not usually the voice of darkness, but this list is so bogus! "Beguiled"?! "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot"?! What is this, TBS on a Sunday afternoon? DVD box sets are for cinephiles. Cinephiles want ALL THREE Man-With-No-Name classics (so we don't HAVE to buy the other two, let alone have the SECOND one). We want a masterpiece like "Unforgiven", yes, and I personally love "The Bridges Of Madison County" (except for Meryl Streep's grown-up kids who ruined the movie), but we want these accompanied by such artistic triumphs as "A Perfect World" and "White Hunter-Black Heart". And what about "Play Misty For Me", "Honkytonk Man", and what's wrong with more than one Dirty Harry? ...With obvious exceptions, this offering is an insult.

What about City Heat? You not only had Clint, you got Burt Reynolds for the same price! Uh, just kidding. Though I kind of dug the Which Way movies. They were a goof. Bottom line, it's a crime to make any box set of Eastwood without G,B, and U. That and Unforgiven are his best.

What's up with the "Beguiled?" That's a Universal title out of the entire Warner Brothers bunch? Hell, unless Clint's going to come, pop open a cold frosty and give me a play-by-play on the films, I'll save my dough.

I would say an unequivocal yes. Why? It can be summed up in one little dialog exchange, that went... something... like... this... "Aren't ya gonna bury him?" "Why bother. Buzzards gotta eat. Same as the worm."
-
Dammit! I was hoping the boxed set would finally signal the arrival of Where Eagles Dare, my absolute favorite Clint Eastwood movie. When will MGM finally give a rat's ass about this movie???
-
Aren't more than half those movies already on DVD? What's the big fucking deal? Just some cardboard clipcase to put them in?
-
That would be a cool and worthy box set, and each on each disc we are treated with there own teaser and theatrical trailers, featurettes, the posters of the films, every merchendise from the films, a 'look back' kind of documentry for each films, director and actors commentry, outakes and bloopers, deleted scenes, tv spots and radio spots, each one with the original poster for the films, on each DVD. Because that's what missing on classic films on DVD, it's the orignal theatrical posters as the front cover of the DVD box, would be the icing on the cake. When buying a film on DVD, even though I love the Rocky movies, I won't but it because the front covers are crap, and when the Star Wars come out, seeing the original theatrical posters as a front cover, on the dvd box, would really top of a great DVD and would be a worthy purchess.
